Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have launched movie fans into excitement with the latest trailer for their new movie, “Barbie.” Gerwig directs the project and she also co-wrote the script with her partner Baumbach. Previously, both scored Oscar nominations in the same year for their work on “Little Women” (Adapted Screenplay for Gerwig) and “Marriage Story” (Original Screenplay for Baumbach). With “Barbie,” the pair of filmmakers could become the first couple to win an Oscar for the same feature film since 2018.
Gerwig and Baumbach would be up for Best Original Screenplay together, while Gerwig could also be up for Best Director, and both could be up for Best Picture (as producers). If they were to win together, they’d become the 19th couple to take home a pair of Oscars for the same movie.

Based on Tim Curio’s short film of the same name, the series followed Rittenhouse’s titular character, a psychic navigating the dating world. Maggie’s gift allows her to see into the future of her friends, parents, clients and random people on the street. But when she begins to see glimpses of her own destiny after meeting an unexpected stranger, her romantic life suddenly gets a lot more complicated. Can you let yourself fall in love when you think you know how it ends? She probably should have seen this coming.

Rocket Science has boarded the biopic “The Good Spy,” about CIA operative Robert Ames, from Oscar-nominated “Paradise Now” and “Omar” director Hany Abu-Assad.
The pic is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Kai Bird’s biography of Ames. Scott Frazier (“Berliner”) is adapting for screen.
“Free Solo” and “Everest” producer Evan Hayes will produce under his Ace (Anomaly Content & Entertainment) production company. Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes will executive produce with Frazier, while Bird will act as a consultant on the project.
Rocket Science is financing the film and will co-represent worldwide sales with CAA Media Finance.
Said Abu-Assad: “When Robert Ames moved deeper into the life of Ali Hasan Salameh, a prominent Plo member, he realizes that not only is he crossing the line between the CIA and being involved in his enemy’s cause, but the friendship between the two men leads to a certain threat to the establishment of both sides.

Exclusive: Rocket Science has boarded worldwide sales on The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez, a film lifting the veil on one of surfing’s most enigmatic heroes, which will be introduced to potential buyers at the 2022 Cannes Market.
While most famously known as “Mr. Pipeline” for his mastery of one of the most dangerous waves in surfing, Gerry Lopez wrestled with a profound internal conflict; his fight to become the best surfer in the world with his dedication to yoga and Buddhist teachings. Gerry’s aggressive, unscrupulous surfing was in stark contrast to his calm demeanor in the tube. And this Zelig-like quality made Gerry wholly unique.
Gerry Lopez is as Zen as he is radical, and he transcends categorization. He’s an apex predator in the surf, one of the most influential surfers and surfboard shapers of all time, an entrepreneur, a family man, a movie star and a lifelong yogi.

Maggie will no longer be putting down roots on ABC.
The single-camera comedy will now stream exclusively on Hulu, Deadline reports.
News of the decision comes as a bit of a surprise, but fellow broadcast networks have been moving shows earmarked for the linear networks to streaming.
CBS, in particular, moved both Evil and Seal Team to Paramount+, but both series has previously spent at least a full season on the linear network.
Deadline notes that ABC's decision was brought on due to a lack of schedule space to slot the Rebecca Rittenhouse midseason comedy.
It was one of four ABC pilots to nab series orders on the network last season.
The Wonder Years launched in the fall and has been a decent ratings performer, but Queens has largely been a disappointment in the traditional ratings.
ABC's comedy roster also includes Home Economics, Abbott Elementary, The Conners, black-ish, and The Goldbergs.

The upcoming ABC comedy series “Maggie” will now debut on Hulu rather than the broadcast network, Variety has confirmed.
The single-camera show was originally ordered to series at ABC in May 2021. A premiere date for the newly christened Hulu original will be announced at a later date.
This is the latest example of a show meant for broadcast to make the move to a streaming service owned by the broadcaster’s parent company. ViacomCBS recently moved the CBS dramas “Seal Team” and “Evil” to Paramount Plus after they had initially aired on broadcast. Meanwhile, Peacock has aired the comedy series “AP Bio” after it was canceled at NBC and debuted the drama “The Lost Symbol” after it was originally developed at NBC.

Exclusive: Single-camera comedy series Maggie, originally picked up by ABC for the 2021-22 season, now will stream exclusively on sibling Hulu in the U.S. as a Hulu Original. The decision, underscoring the blurring of the lines between linear and streaming at the major media companies, was made in order to get Maggie in front of audiences instead of keeping it on the bench because of a lack of available slots on the network.
A premiere date will be announced later.
Maggie, starring Rebecca Rittenhouse as a young woman trying to cope with life while coming to terms with her abilities as a psychic, was one of four ABC pilots ordered to series last May along with comedies The Wonder Years and Abbott Elementary and drama Queens.
On the comedy side, The Wonder Years got off to a strong start in the fall and, along with sophomore Home Economics, received full-season pickups in October.

Doc NYC gave a boost to 15 Oscar-contending documentaries Tuesday, naming them to its prestigious shortlist of the year’s best nonfiction films.
Early favorites Flee, Summer of Soul, The Rescue, Ascension, and Becoming Cousteau made the Doc NYC shortlist, as did Introducing, Selma Blair, the intimate documentary about actress Selma Blair’s battle with Ms, and The Velvet Underground, Todd Haynes’ film on the influential avant-garde rock band fronted by Lou Reed.
Doc NYC has earned a reputation as an accurate predictor of Oscar success. Last year, the festival gave shortlist recognition to three of the docs that went on to claim Oscar nominations: Time, Collective, and Crip Camp.
“For eight of the last nine years, Doc NYC has screened the documentary feature that went on to win the Academy Award,” the festival noted. “The festival has also screened 39 of the last 45 Oscar-nominated documentary features.

The documentary universe has changed radically over the past dozen years. No longer the domain of a few cable channels or public television stations, no longer bound by the old cinema verite rules of engagement, non-fiction filmmaking has spent the past decade bursting out of the low-budget indie sidelines into mainstream acceptance, adopting tricks and tropes from fiction and series storytelling as directors capture audience attention from all over the world.
One force for change throughout has been the Cinema Eye Honors, an awards body created in 2007 by a group of independent filmmakers. Led by Los Angeles documentary filmmaker A.J. Schnack (“Kurt Cobain About a Son” and the recent “30 for 30” entry “Long Gone Summer”), the Cinema Eye Honors have led the charge in shaking up conversations about the types of non-fiction storytelling that were worthy of celebration.

Updated with new photos: It was a long, pandemic-impacted broadcast development cycle, with some pilots taking a year to get produced, but the broadcast networks have made their picks for new scripted series to debut in fall 2021 as well as the bulk of their decisions for new midseason 2022 shows.
The pandemic forced broadcast executives to think outside the traditional broadcast pilot model and rely more heavily on straight-to-series orders, often based on additional scripts, sometimes delivered through the opening of a writers room.
Check out Deadline’s gallery of new 2021-22 shows. Those picked up straight-to-series that have not produced a pilot and have no episodic art available, are represented by their top talent on or behind the camera.

It's been a whirlwind day for ABC.
We've had the renewals of fan-favorite series such as A Million Little Things, The Rookie, and The Conners, the cancellation of Call Your Mother, and now ABC is closing off the day with some series pickups!
Fun, right?
The Wonder Years reboot, which has been a lock for a pickup ever since it was announced, has nabbed a formal series pickup.
We also have another new comedy on the way to ABC next season in the form of Abbott Elementary.
Then there are new dramas, Maggie and Queens, which both sound like they'll be solid additions to the ABC lineup.
Get up to speed on what the shows will be about below.

Four days before ABC’s upfront presentation, the network has made its first new scripted series pickups for the 2021-22 season, with nods to music-themed drama Queens and comedies The Wonder Years, Maggie and Abbott Elementary.
Queens, headlined by Brandy, Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez and Pepi Sonuga, and the Wonder Years reboot, from Saladin Patterson, the original series’ Fred Savage and Lee Daniels, emerged as frontrunners at the script stage and remained strong during casting, production as well as screening and testing of the finished pilots.
Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary also was an early standout, while Maggie Mull and Justin Adler’s Maggie, headlined by Rebecca Rittenhouse, proved a textbook dark horse, staying largely under the radar until a very strong showing during screenings.
ABC has already passed on a number of pilots, including comedy Adopted, and expect more pilot passes this afternoon, while some pilots will remain in active consideration for midseason.

Rebecca Rittenhouse has been cast as the titular lead in the ABC pilot “Maggie.”
Hailing from 20th Television for the alphabet network, “Maggie” is a single-camera comedy based on Tim Curcio’s short film of the same name. It is about a young woman who is trying to cope with her life while she comes to terms with her abilities as a psychic.
Rittenhouse’s character Maggie is described as “quick-witted, charming and soulful” and is noted to be a “real deal” when it comes to her psychic abilities. Her visions of the future will complicate her present-day reality, as she receives a “pummeling assault of energy from every person around her.” While this makes her “intensely sensitive,” it has also resulted in her need to put up emotional walls as a defense mechanism. Oscar ballots will be in the hands of AMPAS voters on March 5, and they’ll have until March 10 to turn them in. All the predicting, theorizing and prognosticating have led to this crucial six-day period when the nearly 10,000 Academy members make their choices among the year’s achievements. As we head into this critical period, in a year defined by a global pandemic that has changed the way we look at cinema, we’re still reminded that movies are well worth celebrating.
Streamers provided access to some of the best films of 2020. This year, no matter what AMPAS ends up selecting as its nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards, most films will be widely available for consumers to watch before the ceremony. Cinema continues to evolve, and we can’t stop what’s coming. As with any true cinephile, my choices for what touched me from this extended eligibility are personally mine.

“The Way I See It” director and producer Dawn Porter says the documentary about former Chief Official White House photographer Pete Souza is not subtle about criticizing Donald Trump’s administration.
“In some years you want to be subtle and this is not a subtle year,” she told TheWrap’s Steve Pond during the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival. “We are hopefully in a once-in-a-lifetime situation where the current occupant in the White House is just unsuited to the job.”
The film follows the life of Pete Souza, who photographed President Barack Obama and his administration. It had its world premiere at TIFF and was then released by Focus Features, and will be broadcast on MSNBC on Oct. 9.
It’s not an easy feat to turn a photography book into a movie, but Jaywalker Pictures’ Jayme Lemons, whose producing partner is Laura Dern, knew that there was something special about these photographs.

Pete Souza, the White House photographer who managed to capture Presidents Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan at both ceremonial occasions and in unguarded moments, will be the subject of an upcoming documentary from Focus Features.
The indie label announced that it is teaming with Dawn Porter, the Peabody Award-winning director of “Gideon’s Army” and “Bobby Kennedy for President,” on the upcoming feature. Focus had a big hit with 2018’s “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” a documentary about children’s entertainer Fred Rogers that went on to gross nearly $23 million domestically. The studio hopes that it will have a similar feel-good story in Souza. The photographer’s media profile has risen in recent years after he started using social media and later his book, “Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents,” to draw photographic contrasts between Obama’s tenure and Donald Trump’s more tumultuous stint at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Focus Features is producing a new documentary from Dawn Porter about former Chief Official White House Photographer Pete Souza.
As Chief Official White House Photographer, Pete Souza had a first person point of view and unprecedented access to the intimate behind-the-scenes gravitas of Potus, photographing Presidents Obama and Reagan. It was a job that gave the photographer a unique vantage point on the nation’s political landscapes. The doc will track Souza’s journey as a person with top secret clearance and total access to the President to a person who has turned his focus on the present day and who uses his art as commentary to help us understand where we the country’s pulse is what it might be missing. His past published works of photographs, Obama: An Intimate Portrait, and Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents both debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller lists. He...

Exclusive: Witchcraft Motion Picture Company announced today that they have acquired the rights to the psychological horror She Came Back from screenwriter Emily Renee Bennett. Witchcraft’s Rod Blackhurst (Director of Netflix’s Amanda Knox) and Noah Lang will fast-track the feature as the first project optioned under the company’s new underrepresented writer mandate. Blackhurst is set to direct.
Described as if The Haunting Of Hill House took place at The Overlook Hotel, She Came Back is a film about a young woman haunted by the childhood murder of her young sister, and who, upon returning to her hometown, discovers that her sister might not be dead after all.
“She Came Back is a film about mental illness, addiction, guilt, and a strong and vulnerable woman’s struggle for identity,” said Blackhurst and Lang in a joint statement.
