Women In Animation (Wia) has partnered with USC, UCLA, and CalArts to create “Breaking the Glass Frame: Women and Animation, Past, Present, Future,” a symposium designed to empower women and Lgbtq+ people by spotlighting female contributions to animation and exploring solutions to sexual harassment, bias, and lack of diversity within the industry and academia. The symposium will take place October 5 – 7 at USC.
The symposium seizes momentum after the John Lasseter debacle (he will leave Disney and Pixar at year’s end after allegations of workplace sexual harassment), and the promotion of Jennifer Lee as chief creative officer at Disney.
The symposium also follows on the heels of Wia’s “Women in Animation World Summit” at the Annecy Animation Festival in June, and Wia’s announcement of a “Women in Animation Vancouver Summit,” ahead of Siggraph 2018 on August 11.

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Plenty of groups give out awards for excellence in film and television at the end of every year, but no set of nominations is watched more carefully by Oscar predictors than the picks from the Producers Guild. That’s because year after year their choices end up being a fairly good indicator of which films will also be granted Best Picture nominations when the Academy makes their selections.
The Guild has announced their 2014 nominations today and there aren’t really any major surprises here. All the expected films are present, including 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Animated films that nabbed nominations are The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Frozen and Monsters University. Included in the documentary nominations are A Place at the Table, Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, Life According to Sam, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks...

DreamWorks Animation producer Jane Hartwell and senior VFX supervisor Markus Manninen explained how new production processes are empowering the vision of the director, in a session on ‘The Future of Animation’ at the Cinematic Innovation Summit (Cis) in Dubai yesterday.
New techniques such as real-time 3D animation – where sequences of animated movies are shot in real time using motion capture – are resulting in shorter production schedules, lower costs and greater collaboration between department heads. This in turn gives the director more control over the film.
“The natural inclination for department heads is to focus on the stage that they are involved in, rather than the overall vision of the film,” Hartwell explained, following a demonstration of the technology used in animated blockbuster The Croods.
She added that when shooting real-time animation, lighting artists and animators work under the supervision of the director, which makes it a collaborative process instead of a review-based one.

In celebration of the Spring Solstice 2013 and in conjunction with the release of Dreamworks’ 3D animation The Croods – a family animation centered around the first ever pre historic road trip – a giant monument was built at Stonehenge at sunrise on Tuesday March 19. This marks the first time a modern structure has Ever been allowed on this historic site.
The Spring Solstice or ‘Vernal Equinox’ recognizes the first day of spring and each year sees druids and pagans gather at Stonehenge early in the morning to watch the sun rise above the prehistoric stones. This year an additional monument, in the shape of The Croods, became part of these special celebrations at daybreak.

Check out two new posters for 20th Century Fox's The Croods. The DreamWorks Animation film stars Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone, as well as Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman, with a release date of March 22nd set. This one looks to do good business, and lift the somewhat lifeless box office, which is down compared to last year. Chris Sanders and Kirk De Micco direct and write and the 3D film is produced by Jane Hartwell and Kristine Belson. The Croods follows the world's first modern family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always been their home is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods are rocked by generational clashes and seismic shifts as they discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures -- and their outlook is changed forever.

The Croods is a 3D comedy adventure that follows the world’s first modern family through the journey of a lifetime. When the cave that has always been their home is destroyed – with the rest of their world not far behind it – The Croods are forced to set off on the first family road (or path) trip. Rocked by generational clashes and seismic shifts, The Croods discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures, and a future beyond any they imagined.
The Crood family dynamics, though unfolding a few million years ago, feel like they could come from your own household. Like most fathers, family patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage) is fiercely protective of his wife and three kids. His hyper-vigilance has kept his cave-bound family safe, secure and….super- bored. Grug’s strong and dutiful better half, Ugga (Catherine Keener), accepts her husband’s “fear is good; change is bad” mentality,...

DreamWorks Animation have announced a very exciting total of nine films to be released in the coming five years.
Three of the nine will be sequels to previous successes (Kung Fu Panda 2, Madagascar 3, and How To Train Your Dragon 2), and the rest will be originals – albeit, with Puss In Boots being a spin-off from the Shrek franchise.
The release schedule looks as follows:
– Kung Fu Panda 2, 26th May, 2011
– Puss In Boots, 4th November, 2011
– Madagascar 3, 8th June, 2012
– Rise Of The Guardians, 21st November, 2012
– The Croods, 1st March, 2013
– Turbo, 7th June, 2013
– My And My Shadow, 8th November, 2013
– Mr. Peabody & Sherman, 21st March, 2014
– How To Train Your Dragon 2, 20th June, 2014

Today DreamWorks Animation issued a press release announcing their theatrical plans through 2014 featuring six original films three sequels based on Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and How to Train Your Dragon franchises. Disney and Pixar have always been the undisputed champions of animation but a new contender has been rising in the ranks over the last several years: DreamWorks. The studio that brought us the Shrek films, Antz, Chicken Run, Madagascar, Bee Movie and many others has been fighting the good fight for the better part of a decade and while they have yet to over take Disney and Pixar, their upcoming slate sounds like they're once again swinging for the fences. On Tuesday, DreamWorks Animation announced their upcoming slate all the way from this summer's Kung Fu Panda 2 through 2014 when they'll release How To Train Your Dragon 2 on June 20. In between, they're preparing original films featuring the likes of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher, Jude Law, Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and many others. After earning many new fans with How to Train Your Dragon last year, Dreamworks seems to have gotten a fresh start in their animated department. While they have the sure-to-be-awful Puss in Boots on the way, Dragon and the popular Kung Fu Panda are getting sequels, and there seems to be a shift in focus towards more creative-based projects- certainly a change from their usual, calculated approach towards CG fare. Check out the release dates below:

Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds have been cast in caveman comedy called "The Croods". However, the two will not be seen dressing like The Flintstones as they are tapped only to voice the characters in this DreamWorks' animation.
According to Variety, Cage is plotted to provide the voice for Crug, a cave-family man who cautiously leads his family beyond his comfort zone after an earthquake destroys their home. Reynolds, meanwhile, is tapped to voice a nomad character who charms Crug's clan, especially his eldest daughter, with his modern-minded ways.
First developed by "Space Chimps" director Kirk DeMicco and John Cleese, the film has DeMicco and "Lilo and Stitch" creator Chris Sanders teaming up to write and direct the upcoming movie. Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell serve as producers for this film, which will be made into 3-D and is scheduled for March 30, 2012 U.S. release.
