Intro: Comedies involving a central pair of main characters usually have one thing in common; their premise is generally very simple. Take 1994’s Dumb and Dumber, for example. The Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels all-time classic comedy, in which two hapless, hopeless losers attempt to return a suitcase full of cash to its rightful owner, thrives on how simple both the plot and the two main characters are. The Farrellys had an amazing knack in the 1990s for delivering comedies that were hilarious because they had a simple idea for the plot, plus they weren’t worried about upsetting anybody with outrageous sequences. Those were the days. You couldn’t produce mainstream comedies such as Me, Myself and Irene, Kingpin or There’s Something About Mary nowadays, for fear of upsetting someone.

Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man – Universal has brought them all back to the screen in the decades since their glory days in the 1930s and ’40s. But one classic Universal monster who hasn’t had a new movie since the 1950s is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. the Gill Man. The closest we’ve gotten is the unofficial version of the creature that was seen in the 1987 classic The Monster Squad… but last month, it was reported that genre regular James Wan and his production company Atomic Monster are developing “a grounded modernized retelling” of Creature from the Black Lagoon that will lean into “visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic.” Now, Deadline has learned that this Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot will be written by Sean Tretta.

Trading Places remains a highlight in the careers of stars Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Lee Curtis. A riff on the timeless Prince and the Pauper tale, it was a smash hit in the summer of 1983, ranking fourth for the year, only beaten by Return of the Jedi, Terms of Endearment and Flashdance. It became a staple of video stores and cable and is also an unheralded holiday classic, taking place around Christmas and New Year’s.
Flashback to 1982. This was an important year in the lives of all of the leading players involved with Trading Places. Good god, it’s been what seems like a lifetime since I last saw Pure Luck. I’m not even sure it previously made the leap from VHS, where I first saw it back in the early 90s, to DVD here in the UK. Back when the film was first released both Danny Glover and Martin Short could do no wrong. Glover was riding high off the success of the Lethal Weapon franchise, scoring lead roles in Predator 2 and Flight of the Intruder; whilst Short had scored back-to-back hits with Innerspace and Three Fugitives… Well I say do no wrong, but maybe that should have read “could have” done no wrong, given the bad reception afforded this comedy…

Universal's classic monster movie Creature From The Black Lagoon was almost remade by John Carpenter in the 1990s. So what happened?
It's one of the great suspense scenes in 50s genre cinema: a woman swims in the clear cool water of an Amazonian lagoon, blissfully unaware of the grotesque creature emerging from the depths beneath her. The score builds to a crescendo as the monster closes in, reaching out with a clawed, webbed hand...
Director Jack Arnold directed some of the best American sci-fi movies of the post-wwii era, and Creature From The Black Lagoon is perhaps his most famous. About a team of scientists investigating the fossilised remains of a strange man-fish hybrid - and discovering the thing still very much alive in the depths of the Amazon - the movie was a sizeable hit for Universal when it came out in early 1954.

Freddie Highmore voices Astro Boy in Astro Boy
Photo: Summit Entertainment It takes some serious talent to make an animated film this bad. With that considered I must give kudos to the folks at Imagi Studios for creating the mess that is Astro Boy. Then again, perhaps the blame should more appropriately fall on the shoulders of director David Bowers and his co-writer Timothy Harris as they set out to make a movie with a story so stupid, so lacking in humanity and so outright boring it's a surprise Summit would have ever even thought to come within 100 feet of this garbage.
As I try to do with most films, I only had a general idea of Astro Boy's premise before walking into the theater. A scientist by the name of Dr. Tenma (voiced by Nicolas Cage) builds a robot son with all the latest technology including the ability to fly,...

Director: David Bowers Writer(s): Osamu Tezuka (comic series) Timothy Harris (screenplay) Starring: Nicolas Cage, Freddie Highmore, Donald Sutherland, Eugene Levy, Nathan Lane Based on the Japanese franchise that dates back to 1952, Astro Boy is the story of Toby (Freddie Highmore), an exceptionally smart little guy who ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Toby's willful nature proves problematic in that he must involuntarily trade his human form for an exterior complete with rocket boosters and other accoutrements befitting a robot. Banished by his father (Nicholas Cage), Toby embarks on a journey beyond the confines of Metro City, a levitating utopian society gone awry. He hopes to find his place among the inhabitants of a long since discarded Earth, now used as a trash heap for derelict electronics. Astro Boy is Star Wars, Iron Giant, Robots, Pinocchio, and a multitude of other movies rolled into one.

Though earlier rumors suggested that "Astro Boy" has been shut down because of cash flow problems, the CG animated movie is still on the course to be released on the planned date. Addressing the issue to IO9, Imagi U.S. president Erin Corbett claimed that the studio's priority is to make sure that the feature film adaptation of the Japanese anime will see the big screens.
Though admitting that the production has to be halted temporarily, she further noted that studio has planned to resume production as soon as the new round of financing comes in on February 3. "Our number one objective is to get back on the rails," Corbett insisted when talking about the future of the David Bowers-directed animation. "We want to do everything to get Astro Boy out the door."

Astro Boy was the first Japanese cartoon brought to America and paved the way for all other anime and Manga that followed. Created for Japanese comics in 1952 by Osamu Tezuka, the robot took flight in 193 animated episodes beginning in 1959. Some 103 were translated into English for American television and played throughout the 1960s as Astro Boy since NBC executives thought Mighty Atom; the more literal translation was too generic.

Believe me, I struggled long and hard to come up with a catchy title like 'From Mars to Metro City' or something like that, but hey, sometimes a pun just isn't going to happen and it's best to move on. Variety reports that Kristen Bell has signed to voice the female lead in the feature film adaptation of Astro Boy. If you know your Astro Boy, you probably don't remember many female leads in the story, but hey, count your blessings if this is the only change in store for the classic manga tale.

- Continuing their run of big time acquisitions, boutique distributor Summit Entertainment has scooped up worldwide rights for Imagi Entertainment’s CG animated Astro Boy. Curiously, the pic was previously set to be distributed domestically and worldwide by Warner Bros. and The Weinstein Company respectively. Created by world-renowned “God of manga” Osamu Tezuka in 1952, Astro Boy tells the story of a precocious young robot built by a genius scientist in the image of his deceased son. When the robot fails to meet the grieving scientist’s expectations, he is cast out onto the world in search of purpose. Designed with fantastic powers, the robot boy soon becomes a sort of super-hero battling both robot-hating humans and alien intruders – all in hopes of ultimately reconciling with his estranged “father.” The series is widely considered the prototype for all anime and the character of Astro Boy is as recognizable as Mickey Mouse
