When Sarah Hagan started her acting career more than 20 years ago, she was just excited to be getting opportunities. Little did she knew that she would go on to make a lasting impact on the industry. In 1999, two years after making her on-screen debut, Sarah got a life-changing opportunity when she was cast in the TV series Freaks and Geeks. Although the series was short-lived, her portrayal of Millie Kentner put her on the map. Even now, she still gets approached by people who recognize her from the show. Sarah may have been a little less active in

Revivals are everywhere you look on TV these days — and frankly, we’re growing a little tired of them. For every cast that still has that original spark we fell in love with years ago, there are two or three more that are just rehashing old jokes for an easy paycheck. In fact, we’re this close to swearing off TV revivals altogether… but we’d make an exception for Freaks and Geeks.

2016 has been an exceptional all-around year for horror and sci-fi films—from the indie realm, we’ve been gifted with an enormous amount of brilliant cinematic stories throughout the past 12 months, and we even saw studios step up their game with an almost unprecedented amount of quality releases.
And along with this wealth of top-notch entertainment, we also saw an incredible number of fantastic female characters over the course of 2016—some heroic, some villainous, but all endlessly engaging in their own right. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to celebrate some of my favorite female performers from this year who gave us complex, interesting, and wholly compelling reasons to keep falling in love with genre cinema all over again (and again).

Something happened to Janie (Sarah Hagan). Something bad. This cataclysmic event — wherein quick flashes of screams by the pool mixing with bloody red liquid screens of abstraction are all we ever see — has led her to an agreed upon house arrest. Cared for by long-time nanny Irma (Barbara Crampton), this young woman must fulfill psychological tests with colored pencils and flowers, engage in yoga centering techniques, and consume a regimented series of medication. Every day she gets better. Every day she’s more like herself. Even Irma appears satisfied with the progress, talking to her father abroad about how it may be time to let her back out into the world. But this is the world that consumed her once. It doesn’t take long to threaten doing so again.

While watching Sun Choke, most of my time was spent searching for some deeper meaning. It’s an obvious character piece about mental breakdowns and imprisoned healing, but I kept digging for hidden messages amongst all the holistic babbling. But as the film winded down, and tensions reached a boil, it became obvious that everyone was fighting for one constant theme – control.
A deranged woman struggles to control her violent outbursts, a homely caretaker attempts to control her unpredictable patient, and then said patient goes rogue when she cannot suppress her inner-actions anymore. Bad things happen, power shifts, and we witness an ever-changing dynamic between three clashing personalities – everything Ben Cresciman intends to play out, with no overwhelming backstory.
Sarah Hagan stars as a disturbed young woman (Margo or Janie, depending on who she’s talking to, but really Janie), who finds herself under the care of an older therapist/mentor (Irma,...

Sarah Hagan has had two memorably substantial roles in her career thus far—both on television, and both over a decade ago. She was the rigorously prim mathlete Millie on Freaks And Geeks, and played Amanda, one of the “potentials” in the final season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Since the early 2000s, Hagan’s mostly been relegated to guest shots and bit parts, but that should change after her striking leading performance as the mentally disturbed Los Angeles heiress Janie in writer-director Ben Cresciman’s moody thriller Sun Choke. The film doesn’t always work as a genre exercise, but it’s a winner as a character study, in large part because of how committed Hagan is to playing Janie’s derangement. Casting directors in search of the offbeat should take note.

Ben Cresciman's Lynchian, psychological thriller Sun Choke hits VOD and iTunes on August 2 and ScreenAnarchy has a healthy exlcusive to share. In the clip below, horror icon Barabra Crampton (Re-Animator, Road Games) delivers some news to an inflicted Sarah Hagan (Freaks and Geeks) that puts a smile on her face. But are her intentions entirely good? Well, you'll have to see the film, won't you? The emotionally intense and often surreal thriller has drawn early comparisons to Polanski's Repulsion. In her review, ScreenAnarchy's Michele "Izzy" Galgana described it as "a fever dream sprung from the mind of an unreliable narrator..." when she saw it at the Stanley Film Festival. Besides Crampton and Hagan, Sun Choke stars Sara Malakul Lane (Kickboxer: Vengeance), Jim Beoven and Evan Jones. ...

During a TCA panel about his new Love TV series, coming to Netflix, Judd Apatow was asked, again, if there is any hope for a revival or reboot of the Freaks and Geeks TV show, cancelled by NBC, far too soon. When he answered, Apatow forgot to slam the door shut and bolt it, and it seems industry reports parsed his answer as containing more hope than he intended.
What is sure, is that Apatow praised the Freaks and Geeks cast and crew, who have gone on to prove themselves as special as fans knew they were, 16 years ago. The Freaks and Geeks cast includes: Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, James Franco, Samm Levine, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Star, Busy Philipps, and Sarah Hagan.

Well here it is, my Top 15 films of 2015. If you’ve ever read one of my end of year lists, you’ll know that my choices tend to be a million miles away from the mainstream; and this year is no different! This year has been Amazing for films, I could easily had penned a list of 52 films – one for each week of the year – but instead I managed to narrow down the choices to 28 films quite swiftly. However, to hit this years target of a Top 15 (for 2015 geddit?) it took a hell of a lot of work. I think this list even surprises me – there’s a number of films that going back over the 508[!] films we’ve reviewed here on Nerdly in 2015, at the time I reviewed them, I didn’t expect would stay with me till the end of the very end of the year. There won’t be another horror movie released this year that’s anything like Sun Choke, the second feature from writer/director Ben Cresciman. It is a singular film, one that’s less a conventional horror effort than a three-character drama with a tendency to get very, very bloody.
Sarah Hagan of Freaks & Geeks plays Janie, a woman who we’re told is recovering from a psychotic breakdown and who is in the care of her nanny, Irma (Barbara Crampton). The methods by which she is being treated appear… unorthodox, and hardly deter Janie from her psychosis, as she is granted a small amount of independence and uses it to stalk a beautiful woman (Sara Malakul Lane) with whom she feels a strong connection. And then things get weird.

Horror comes screaming into the light in a masterpiece of mystery and menace. Janie (a career defining performance from ‘Freaks and Geeks’ Sarah Hagan) is just trying to get well. Recovering from a violent psychotic break, she’s subjected each day to a bizarre holistic health and wellness regimen designed, and enforced, by her lifelong nanny and caretaker. Finally granted permission to leave her La house, Janie develops an obsession with Savannah to whom she feels an inexplicable yet profound connection. The obsession turns increasingly invasive, and wedges all three women into an ever-tightening, and progressively terrifying struggle for control.

★★★★★ Ben Cresciman's intense psychological horror film Sun Choke (2015) is the story of a woman staring into the abyss of nothingness and liking what she sees: absolute nothing, a retreat from the chaos of the light. It's been likened to grand auteurs such as Bergman, Lynch and Polanski, and those debts are easily enough to pull out. However, the director's approach and 'treatment' of his protagonist, Janie (the astoundingly good Sarah Hagan), and the depiction of her mental illness and form of disassociation is perhaps more informed and closer in spirit to the 1981 German production, No Mercy, No Future, by Helma Sanders-Brahms.

However unlike that TV show, where that edge would ultimately channel itself into a heroic vampire slaying role, the underlying edge here is more of the unhinged kind – you literally spend the entire movie just waiting for her character Janie to snap.

Writer-director Ben Cresciman's second feature, Sun Choke, premiered at the Stanley Film Festival this weekend. It is a good time for indie horror and as a bonus, it's an even better time to be a woman starring in indie horror which has, over the last few years, emerged as a great place for actresses to take a lead as more than just beauties in distress. The latest title on the docket: Sun Choke.
Sarah Hagan stars as Janie, a young woman who, under the care of her lifelong nanny Irma, is recovering from a psychotic break. All seems to be going well until Janie is allowed to leave the house. She quickly becomes obsessed with another woman, an obsession that veers her off the road to recovery and plummets the three women into a heap of trouble.

There’s a new, more sinister side to Barbara Crampton in the trailer for upcoming Stanley Film Festival World Premiere, Sun Choke. Directed by Ben Cresciman, Sun Choke has an air of holistic horror about it as lead Janie (Sarah Hagan) is placed on a wellness regimen following a psychotic break. Her caregiver is Crampton, who takes on…

Many films torture their characters (e.g. the Saw series; I Spit on Your Grave). Drew Denny, a truly beautiful woman who has written, helmed, and stars in this semi-lesbian road trip, has decided instead to scourge the audience with directorial incoherence, an abysmal screenplay, inane antics, and incessantly showing off her ultra-white teeth. At times, you’re not sure if you are watching an exploration of two women’s lives or the world’s longest Crest commercial.
The Most Fun I've Ever Had with My Pants On, an adaptation of Ms. Denny's 2011 performance piece, a heartfelt tribute to her late father, chronicles the journey of Andy (Denny), a randy, immature lesbian traveling about various scenic parts of America, including Yosemite; White Sands, New Mexico; and West Texas, to scatter her dad's ashes piecemeal. The first ever Geekie Awards took place on Aug. 18 in Los Angeles. Created by self-professed geek Kristen Nedopak, the awards ceremony seeks to honor the independent filmmakers, artists and creators active in the geek world.
It's no surprise then that Nathan Fillion and Stan Lee were awarded top honors during the ceremony. Fillion was named Geek of the Year, while Lee earned a lifetime achievement award. Since Fillion wasn't able to attend the awards show, Samm Levine, Natasha Melnick and Sarah Hagan instead presented the award to Jesse Heiman, who gave his best Fillion impression. Meanwhile, Seth Green presented Lee his award. In addition, the Nasa Jpl Mars Curiosity Rover team was given the Geek Cred award.
Present at the awards show were Tara Platt, who served as main announcer, and presenters Richard Hatch, Grant Imahara and Magda Apanowicz, among others. Here are the rest of the night's winners:

Can you ever really leave the past behind? Not if you're Linda Cardellini.
Although her face is now a familiar one thanks to her role as Don Draper's (Jon Hamm) latest mistress Sylvia on "Mad Men," Cardellini got her start playing Lindsay Weir on "Freaks And Geeks" from 1999-2000.
The series was short-lived -- it lasted only a season -- it's responsible for launching the careers of actors like James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel and Busy Philipps. And according to Cardellini, they've all remained friends.
"Oh, we see each other. You constantly run into each other," Cardellini explained while on HuffPost Live. "Busy, I just gave her a baby shower. Sarah Hagan, I was just invited to her art show. It's a small world in this business.
"It was such an amazing time in all of our lives and careers," she said. "It's one of the most special things I've been a part of.

Freaks and Geeks Episode 1 ‘Pilot’
Directed by Jake Kasdan
Written by Paul Feig
Aired 9/25/1999
If there’s such thing as a perfect pilot, Freaks and Geeks‘s first hour is it. Most pilots are mish-mashed groups of scenes with some overly constructed jokes, an audience-grabbing plot hook, and numerous scenes where characters explain who other characters are. ‘Pilot’ is the exact opposite of that, a beautiful, detailed photograph into a high school in suburban Detroit on the first day back from summer vacation. From that first scene, where an overwrought confession of love between a football player and cheerleader (“I just love you so much… it scares me”) is shoved off-frame to introduce us to the ‘freaks’, Freaks and Geeks established itself as a different kind of high school show, one that wasn’t afraid to be honest about shitty high school life when you’re not “one of the cool kids.

Andy's (Drew Denny) father has recently died; she has enlisted Liv (Sarah Hagan) to be her co-pilot on a drive across the Southwestern United States. En route from Los Angeles to Austin, the two childhood friends stop at one picturesque location after another to scatter his ashes. Liv seems to take the task at hand much more seriously than Andy, but that is partially because as an actress she is more expressive. However, it is not that Andy is not mourning the death of her father, she just handles grief very differently than Liv. Unwilling (or possibly unable) to discuss her feelings, Andy turns to laughter and silliness, as if trying to distract herself from the pain.

The Most Fun You’ll Have With Tedium: Denny’s Debut Neither Lives Up To It’s Teasing Title or Promising Premise
Using the recent death of her father as inspiration for her feature film debut, Drew Denny combines female bonding comedy with a road trip film, all built upon a loopy elegiac base for her dead father, which is supposedly driving the narrative forward. Ironically, the over lengthy and twee title of The Most Fun I’ve Ever Had With My Pants On is only the first clue that this threadbare material would have been better served as a short feature, running ashore quiet early on as it clunkily attempts to explore the notion of finding comedy, or the joy of living, despite life’s heartbreak and tears. But one gets the sense that this opaquely rendered exercise would be most enjoyed by the friends and relatives of the Denny family.

Jess + Moss, the directorial feature debut of Clay Jeter, centers on the tight-knit relationship between two second cousins, forged over a shared feeling of isolation and fear of growing up. At 18 and 12 respectively, Jess (Sarah Hagan) and Moss (Austin Vickers) are on opposite ends of adolescence, and this drama explores that divide through revealing vignettes of a pivotal summer spent together. Jeter, not only co-wrote and directed this coming of age tale, but also served as its cinematographer. Shot on location amidst Kentucky's vibrant tobacco fields and with various and sometimes degraded film stocks, Jess + Moss paints a romantic and visually lush depiction of the bittersweet beauty of youth. Following a globetrotting festival tour that included exhibitions at Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festival, Jess + Moss is now open in limited release. You can get a peak at this acclaimed experimental effort thanks to its first trailer, courtesy of...

While there are many pressing existential questions, to my mind, this is one of the most significant: can one make a truly effective film about aimlessness and boredom without that film becoming excruciatingly aimless and boring in its own right? At first glance, Clay Jeter’s Jess + Moss might seem to confront that issue head on, and if you aren’t in the right frame of mood, your opinion might be a less than favorable one. But if you go into it understanding that this is sensory-based—as opposed to plot-driven—cinema,...

Sarah Hagan is a shadow of her memories in Jess + Moss.
The 2011 independent drama Jess + Moss, directed and co-written by first-time feature filmmaker Clay Jeter, is tagged as “a lyrical tale of two solitary, playful and young souls.”

Revenge was in the air on 90210. But the real tragedy in "Greek Tragedy" was that the episode was Not entirely about Naomi.
Every scene this character was in was amusing and fun to watch. From the catty one-liners she shared with Holly to the laser pointer to her chic Greek makeovers, she was on point. Naomi was typical Naomi. Oblivious to Ivy's pain, she simply walked away when she saw something more interesting. Like a magpie spotting a shiny object.
The perfect weapon to wield against her new nemesis, Holly, Naomi made a beeline to Cu's big fat Greek sorority, which was all to happy to help Naomi get revenge. And, after Holly's toga stunt, all I wanted to see was Naomi wreak havoc on that beeyotch's busted weave. Especially now that Holly found Max's love letters and intends to use them to bury her. We'll see about that.
