As he turns 80 on October 11, the living legend Amitabh Bachchan – Bollywood’s biggest superstar in its 110-years’ history – can look back with satisfaction at his long career on the silver screen, where he became a icon along with a galaxy of leading ladies.
It was in 1969 – when man landed on the moon – that Bachchan took his first small step with “Saat Hindustani”, which ultimately proved to be a gigantic leap for his megastar-dom.
But he stood out in his maiden film – in the crowd of six other actors jostling for screen space in the pacey thriller themed on the Goa Liberation – with the sole female revolutionary – Shahnaz Vahanvati (daughter of the comedian Agha), gunning to free the west Indian territory from Portuguese clutches.

Nikamma
Starring Shilpa Shetty, Abhimanyu Dasani, Abhimanyu Singh
Directed by Sabbir Khan
No, this is not a film about a guy name Nik and his amma. Nikamma , as Tusshar Kapoor taught us in a song many years go, means a wastrel, a good-for-nothing, a lukha, a bekar berozgaar bematlab insaan…
And if you think Abhimanyu Dasani is the Nikaamma of the title then, ha ha, they fooled you. No, dear potential audience, the nikamma in the title is us, the spectators sitting in the theatre watching this garbage masquerading as a movie experience.
One has to be a full-fledged nikamma to inflict this suffering on oneself.
Or maybe some filmmakers think we Indian are suckers for masochism. So bring it on, baby. This is the story of Adi and Avni, Devar and Bhabhi who love to hate each other until poor Sachin Khedekar(playing Adi’s chirpy Chachaji) reveals the big secret: Bhabhi Avni,...

Rohan Mehra, who is all set to embark upon a new journey by making an acting debut with Baazaar, has been working in the film industry for the last two years. Having assisted eminent film makers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rohan also tried his hand at photography, composed music and did some ghost writing, before he got a photo shoot done and posted pictures on Instagram, when he caught the eye of Kal Ho Naa Ho’s director Nikkhil Advani who surprised Mehra with a phone call. Five years later, Rohan faced the camera for the first time with Nikkhil Advani’s Baazaar, directed by Gauravv Chawla. The film stars nawab Saif Ali Khan along with the talented Radhika Apte.
“It’s exciting working with actors of their stature in my first film as it throws me into the deep-end straightaway. I was nervous but the nerves have cooled down.

Filmmaker Anil Sharma best remembered for films like Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, The Hero: Love Story of Spy and the more recent release Singh Sahab the Great that hit screens in 2013 will soon be returning to direction with a film titled Genius. Though the writer - director is gung-ho about the project, we hear that apart from him returning to filmmaking there are a couple of added reasons for him to celebrate. In fact Sharma will be launching his son Utkarsh as the lead protagonist in the film Genius.
While Sharma will be announcing the film tomorrow, July 14, he confirmed the news to us saying, "July 14 for me is a very special day, for starters my father launched me on the same day back in 1980 with the film Shradhanjali that starred Raakhee, so in turn I think this is the best day that I should launch my son in films.

When Rohit Shetty announced the remake of the 1989 cult film Ram Lakhan, to be produced by Dharma Productions, what followed was a series of speculations about the casting. With the names of several A-listers being tossed around, we believe that the makers may have found their perfect Ram and his brother Lakhan for the remake.
From what we hear, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are the current contenders for the role and the two will soon be signed for the same. In the original Subhash Ghai blockbuster, Ram, the sincere and honest cop was played by Jackie Shroff and the enthusiastic grey-shaded role of Lakhan was played by Anil Kapoor. In the upcoming remake it is being that Shahid Kapoor will play the elder brother Ram whilst Ranveer will be seen as the younger Lakhan. An official announcement on the same is being awaited.

Starring – Tabu, Katrina Kaif, Aditya Roy Kapoor and above all, Kashmir

There is only one hero in Abhishek Kapoor’s massively disappointing and bogus adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. And it’s not Aditya Roy Kapoor. It’s Kashmir. The film, purported to be a romance between the bewitching Katrina Kaif and the besotted Aditya Roy Kapoor, romances just the Kashmir Valley. The rest is all mystery.
I recommend Fitoor be used to promote tourism in the Valley. As for Charles Dickens and Great Expectations, thankfully the author is not around to see how far his novel about forbidden love has been taken away from its roots.
Dickens’ title, as it turns out, proves prophetically ironic. You enter director Abhishek Kapoor’s snow-swept stunning world of stillness and turbulence, with a whole lot of expectations. You come away feeling cheated, betrayed and also angry for...

By now, everyone is aware of the fact that Mastizaade stars the eye-candy Sunny Leone in a double role. But what many don't know is that there is a scene in Mastizaade, where the makers have spoofed the cult scene from the film Karan Arjun in which Raakhee is 'extremely vocal and confident' that her Karan and Arjun will return. The said sequence in Mastizaade shows a lady (Rakhee's representation), while banging her head on a temple's bell screaming, "Mere Karan Arjun aayengey". Very unexpectedly though, her (supposed) husband appears in front of her with a packet of a leading condom brand in hand. He, then, gives a wise repartee stating, "Neither, Karan nor Arjun will come, because I had used the (leading brand) of condoms". When asked about the said scene, Mastizaade's director Milap Zaveri said, "Yes, there is such a scene in the film. But, it's an extremely short scene.

Is it just a mere coincidence that just days ahead of the release of the eagerly awaited Bajirao Mastani where the Great Clash between warrior-lovers Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone is destined to happen, a new song 'Albela Sajan Aayo Re' from the film shows Priyanka Chopra dazzling us with her vivacious dancing. As for those adoring glances that she darts at 'Bajirao' Ranveer Singh ...this is a woman in love. No two ways about it. The song filmed in sublimely saturated colours of joy and ecstasy, is a celebration of home-coming. The wife breaks into a dance of rejoicing as her warrior-husband returns ...The song is in the tradition of Lata Mangeshkar's 'Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi' from Aawara...Or Kavita Krishnamoorthy's 'Mera Piya Ghar Aaya' from Yaaraana. Priyanka's expressions of ebullience are incredibly infectious. So far we've seen very little of her in Bajirao Mastani's trailers. In the...

Irrfan Khan who shot to fame after the undoubted international success of Slumdog Millionaire, is to star in Meghna Gulzar’s next film as a Police Officer.
The film will be centered around the real-life high profile case of the 2008 murder of a 13 year old girl, Aarushi Talwar and a 45 year old domestic helper who were found murdered in the Talwar’s house in Noida, India.
Meghna Gulzar is the daughter of famous lyricist Gulzar and actress Rakhee, and her last venture Just Married, failed to make a big impression on audiences, so only time will tell if this film makes the cut.
Shefali Shah will also be seen playing the role of Aarushi’s mother, Nupur Talwar and the film will be produced by Vishal Bhardwaj.
As of yet the title is unconfirmed and this film requires both tact and the right angle from which to portray the story in.

Ace filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, who is known for his unique films, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on Thursday morning at 7.30am in Kolkata at the age of 49. He was reportedly suffering from pancreatitis.
Rituparno Ghosh was first acknowledged in the 90’s when he made films in Bengali with strong and sensitive subjects. His recent endeavours were with some Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Ghosh won many national awards and his film Chokher Bali starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Raima Sen was nominated for Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival in 2003.

He played the role of a homosexual filmmaker in Kaushik Ganguly’s ‘‘Arekti Premer Galpo’ and Sanjoy Nag’s ‘Memories in March’. He was one person who never attempted to hide his sexual preferences.

Out of all the characters that you will come across in an Indian film, one that you will rarely see go astray is a mother. That too, the hero’s mother. She is an entity that restrains him with no physical bounds, gives him strength like no other energy drink, drives him to lengths beyond imagination (all within 2.5 hours) and without her, teaches him lessons universities worldwide have yet to discover. From being a sari clad soap opera box drama queen to a sophisticated career driven business magnet, she has transformed in front of us but one thing remains. The positive energy one feels from our filmi “Ma”. It may be a scene or a song, but she is there and her love unconditional. Yes, there may be some stories that forget about her, yet there is no denying, our cinematic mothers have sometimes been the saving grace for our films.

Mumbai, Dec 14: Actress Raakhee Gulzar spent weeks learning how to play the sitar from the maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar himself. It was for her role of the unfulfilled housewife in Aparna Sen's "Paroma".
Recalling the glorious time she had strumming those magical strings under the guidance of the late master sitarist, Raakhee said: "There were scenes in 'Paroma' where my character was shown to be playing the sitar. Neither Aparna nor I wanted to fake it. Pandit Ravi Shankar was requested to give me sitar lessons."
What was meant to be just surface-level tips on rudimentary rules of managing the instrument, turned out to be full-fledged.

“I always believe that my films should give some hope to the man who comes to watch them for those three hours. If he goes home on an optimistic note, I would feel satisfied at having done my duty.” – Yash Chopra
It was indeed a sad day when news spread that one of India’s finest filmmakers, Mr. Yash Chopra, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 80. Mr. Chopra is an undisputable legend and he has crafted some of the finest commercial films the Bollywood audiences have ever feasted their eyes upon. If Satyajit Ray is considered by Indian film enthusiasts to be the supreme director when it comes to art-house cinema, Yash Chopra can be classified as the definitive director when it comes to mainstream cinema. Yash Chopra is largely famous for making wonderful romantic films, though he has directed a handful of non-romantic films also. Yet no director...

Pran Kishan Sikand
Pran Kishan Sikand dreamt of becoming a professional photographer. Little did he know that a measly, humble ‘paan’ (betel leaf) would change his life and set him on his destined path. It was 1939 or thereabouts. Pran was at a ‘paan’ shop at Lahore, enjoying a munch with his friends when a stranger approached him and asked whether he wanted to act in films. Pran was amused and asked his name. Stranger introduced himself as Muhammad Walli, a renowned film maker in the flourishing film district of Lahore. He said he was making a Punjabi film and Pran looked a perfect fit for the role of a villain in the film. Pran just brushed him off. Walli kept insisting that he pay a visit to the studio, and pushed a piece of paper with his address into Pran’s hands. The film was Yamla Jat (1940), a runaway hit that year.

Bbuddah…Hoga Tera Baap mark a return for Amitabh to his Angry Young Man roots, so expect some cracking dialogue with plenty of dishoom dishoom from the original maverick! This revisionist masala films definitely warrants a look back at the many roles Amitabh Bachchan has unleashed his righteous fury. However, with each of these roles, Bachchan offered a different interpretation of his most iconic persona. You could say Bachchan’s Angry Young Man was a successor to the Disillusioned Young Man of the 50s played by Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Guru Dutt. Aided by great screenwriters Salim Khan, Javed Akhtar, and directors who knew how draw the best out him; Amitabh Bachan’s iconic persona is a perfect fusion of all these elements in creating a lasting legacy for Indian cinema. Though the Angry Young Man that Bachchan embodied became an increasing staple in masala films, he echoed many...

'Kabhi Kabhie' (1976)
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee Gulzar, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Waheeda Rehman
Say what you will about filmmaker Yash Chopra—Bollywood's evergreen romantic—but over the course of his long career as a director and producer, he hasn't flinched from exploring difficult matters of the heart—and few relationship issues are more challenging than emotional infidelity, the subject of his 'Kabhi Kabhie.'
There are nine characters, spanning two generations and including four couples and three interconnected love triangles—you need a playbill to keep it straight—all of which reflects a complicated topic that has insidiously far-reaching effects. But Chopra lingers long on the principals and stretches out their pile-up of pain and selfishness so the story doesn't feel muddled, and the measured pace never feels slow.
