Get your tissues ready: “The Iron Claw” will be available to stream on Max on May 10.
The A24 biographical sports drama debuted in theaters on Dec. 22 and received critical acclaim. Starring Zac Efron, Sean Durkin’s latest feature is based on the Von Erich wrestling dynasty, who suffered a series of tragic deaths in the family. Efron plays Kevin Von Erich, alongside Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich and Holt McCallany as patriarch Fritz Von Erich. Lily James plays Kevin’s wife Pam Adkisson and Maura Tierney plays matriarch Doris Von Erich.
Efron famously packed on pounds of muscle to portray the professional wrestler. “That necessity to be perfect — it became an obsession,” he told Variety for his December cover story. “It was a singular focus for months. And your life goes out the window during prep.

This review contains spoilers for "The Iron Claw."
The world of professional wrestling is filled with enough tragedy to constitute its own dedicated documentary series about it, but there has never been a story of familial annihilation quite like the Von Erichs. Often compared to the Kennedy family, the Von Erichs were/are a dynasty of wrestling superstars and the subject of unimaginable despair. Telling their story outside of a documentary setting seems an impossible task, but Sean Durkin has done the impossible with "The Iron Claw." While marketed as a biopic, "The Iron Claw" is more like a dramatic retelling of the Von Erich story — a legend retold blow by blow and presented as if it were modern folklore. And yet despite the creative liberties taken — including a glaring omission (more on that later) — "The Iron Claw" is the type of drama that makes a home in the darkest...

Dr. Evil once said, “There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum. It’s breathtaking. I suggest you try it.” Perhaps Jeremy Allen White could have used the Austin Powers villain as a co-star while filming A24‘s The Iron Claw, as it might have made him feel better about an extreme body hair-shaving session he participated in for the highly-anticipated sports drama. Speaking with Variety about the upcoming film, White recalled shaving every inch of his body alongside co-stars Zac Efron and Harris Dickinson. “Our bodies had to be completely shaved,” White said. “We were strangers at the time. Now I know them and love them, but at the time, it was like, ‘Hi, nice to meet you and yes, they’re shaving off all of our body hair.'”

EW recently teamed up with the triumvirate for a stylish cover shoot that’s sure to have you craving biscuits and smelling the sweat of a hard day’s work.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Iron Claw:

For months now, we've been seeing paparazzi photos of Zac Efron looking extremely beefy with a silly haircut, and hearing reports about "The Bear" star Jeremy Allen White's "gross" diet in preparation for the new A24 film, "The Iron Claw." For outsiders looking in, "The Iron Claw" looks like a wrestling drama, and many are thrilled to see the pair of actors step into the squared circle of muscle ballet. However, the average Joe's opinion of wrestling is rooted in the heyday of Hulkamania, the Attitude Era of the late '90s, or through crossover stars who have since become actors. Here's the thing: It's really cool that Allen and Efron are going to be in a wrestling movie, but if you're anticipating something like the extremely fun "Fighting With My Family" starring Florence Pugh or the deeply moving biopic "Cassandro" starring Gael García Bernal ... you're in for a hell of a rude awakening.

Arrow alum Stephen Amell will soon lace up his leather boots in the wrestling drama Heels, premiering this Sunday at 9/8c on Starz.
He stars as Jack Spade, a family man and wrestler with big dreams to expand the Duffy Wrestling League, which he inherited from his father, beyond its small-town roots. The show, which was created by Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), finds Amell performing many of his character’s impressive in-ring moves, including a coast-to-coast leap from the top rope you’ll see in the first episode.

At the height of my wrestling and boy band obsession, I wrote a crossover fan fic in which *Nsync’s Justin Timberlake dated a WWE wrestler who was best friends with the Hardy Boyz and Lita. It was not good.
On the other hand, Starz’s upcoming drama Heels (premiering Sunday, Aug. 15 at 9/8c; I’ve seen the first seven episodes) — created by fellow wrestling fan Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and executive-produced by Mike O’Malley (Survivor’s Remorse) — is very good.

In the sixth episode of new NBC sitcom “Young Rock,” based on the real life of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, his father, Rocky Johnson (Joseph Lee Anderson), prepares for and then wrestles in a Battle Royal. The way the match was written, there were 18 performers who would take each other out one, or a few, at a time, leaving Rocky to become the Polynesian Pacific champion. It’s a stunt-heavy sequence that includes performers hitting each other with chairs. Meanwhile Lia (Ana Tuisila) thinks Rocky is going to cross her and leave for a rival wrestling company. So, unbeknownst to Rocky, she changes the outcome at the last minute so that the Iron Sheik (Brett Azar) wins. This results in an emotional realization within the ring for Rocky, as well as an impromptu compromise from both men as to how exactly he will lose.

Welcome to this review of Impact Wrestling’s Victory Road 2019, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the return of the once great Pay Per View known as Victory Road. I hope Robert De Niro doesn’t like chocolate, because…there was going to be a “De Niro likes black chicks” joke here, but there’s nothing funny about loving black chicks. Black chicks are cool. They’re beautiful. Also, if you’re in the church youth choir, don’t stand too close to the priest. Impact co-hosted this show with wrestling league World Class Revolution. Okay, let’s rock on down the Victory Road.

Match #1: Big Bad Steve lost to Jake Strong
My Take: As matches go, this was not what you would call “ambitious”. The whole idea was to introduce Jake Strong, who is the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger. Strong typically got the wrong end of the deal while working for Vince McMahon, with most of his momentum halted just as he was starting to gain some steam. Strong looks so different outside the WWE, despite having an identical look to his WWE days. It could be said that Strong’s training for Bellator has had an effect on his confidence (and that’s likely true) but I’d argue that it’s simply a thrill for any wrestler to go to work without having to run...

They have second season single-camera comedies that often lean more on heart than humor (including both tackling the emotional topic of abortion), coincidentally they happen to live in the same small pocket of Los Angeles, they share the same streaming home (Netflix) and they happen to be huge fans of each others’ work. When “Glow” creators and executive producers Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch and “Dear White People’s” creator and executive producer Justin Simien sat down at Variety, they had a lot of praise for each other and one key request — “No spoilers.”
Although Simien’s sophomore offering launched in May, he had yet to see Flahive and Mensch’s, as “Glow” isn’t due to return until the end of June. It is their first season, which dropped last June and scored some key SAG noms and a Golden Globe nom for leading lady Alison Brie, that is Emmy-eligible this year.

Glow may stand for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, but for Britney Young, the Netflix series represents something different.
Born in Tokyo and raised in Alaska, the actress walked an untraditional path to Hollywood success (assuming there's such a thing as a traditional one). No doubt about it: The 1980s was a strange time to channel surf. Those neon-tinted, big-haired, irony-free days have provided Internet curio-seekers with fodder for infinite terabytes of grainy, colorful ephemera. And one of the cornerstones of weird Eighties television was "Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling" (G.L.O.W. for short), an all-female pro-wrestling league whose exploits were filmed in Las Vegas and syndicated nationwide.

Uproxx is reporting that Lucha Underground will be making its return to the El Rey Network on May 31st for its Season 3 mid season premiere. Lucha Underground, for those that haven't seen it, is a unique blend of wrestling and B-movie intrigue. It centers on corrupt owner Dario Cueto who runs the Lucha Underground wrestling organization and his dealings with wrestlers and various unseemly characters like politicians, police, and Aztec deities. Here is a summary of Season 3 from the Lucha Underground website.
Dario Cueto has been released from prison, the mysterious Lucha Underground Temple is back in business. El Jefe is more confident than ever in his brother, the undefeated Lucha Underground Champion Matanza and his quest for violent domination. 1.Sad news this week in the world of pro wrestling when it was announced that legendary performer Mr. Fuji, Harry Fujiwara, passed away at the age of 83. Mr. Fuji had a long stay in the business, first as an in ring performer, collecting many tag team championships around the world, than as a manager of such acts as Demolition and The Powers of Pain. He also had a reputation as a ribber, someone in the business who pulls pranks to lighten the mood. Hearing a couple of the ribs he pulled off as they were discussed on the Eric Bischoff podcast when he interviewed Hulk Hogan, I have to say I am glad I never made that guy angry. Hide your cats! (Listen to the podcast to find out why.) Mr. Fuji was a legend and will be missed.

In Lucha Underground, an eclectic mix of talent ranging from Prince Puma and Johnny Mundo to Mil Muertes and Chavo Guerrero are all putting on a riveting show, and the same can be said for a great many promotions whether they’re in the Us, Japan or even in the UK.
But what about the stars of tomorrow? While there’s a group of wrestlers primed and ready to become today’s show-stealers and headliners, what about the up-and-coming stars who in five or ten years time might be in the same position as...

It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years already, but as of this week a decade has passed since the wrestling world tragically lost one of the greats. Eddie Guerrero was a performer admired by fans and peers alike; someone who visibly gave his all each time he stepped in the ring and worked hard to entertain.
One of the most gifted workers to ever set foot in a ring, the former WWE champion and member of the vaunted Guerrero wrestling family was truly one of a kind. His death hit those within the industry and on the outside looking in quite hard, and his friends and family have continued to keep his memory alive in their words and actions. Still to this day no one can perform a frog splash in any arena in the world without the crowd breaking into chants of his name.

Kevin Nash has apologised for an image of a naked woman that was posted on his Twitter account on Saturday.
The image in question features a brunette woman posing naked on a bed with her ‘private area’ fully exposed. While the photo was deleted from his account not to soon after it was posted, it remains visible on WWE.com’s profile page on Nash where his most recent tweets are displayed at the time of writing.
The image could land Nash in hot water with the WWE as he is currently four years into a five-year Legend’s contract. There’s every chance that he will receive nothing more than a slap on the wrists and told to make sure nothing like this happens again, although due to the nature of the image it also wouldn’t be a surprise to see his case dealt with more severely.

‘Eddie Guerrero is my favourite wrestler’.
That was the slogan printed on the t-shirt that Chavo Guerrero (reluctantly) donned during his 1998 feud with his uncle. It was a shirt that many, including myself, would have very happily purchased and worn. Eddie Guerrero was and is my favourite wrestler, since the first time I saw him perform.
There was nobody quite like Eddie, who had seemingly mastered every facet of the business. A true wrestler’s wrestler, he was as smooth as silk in the ring and unbelievably entertaining on the microphone and in backstage segments. You knew that if Eddie Guerrero was on TV, you were at least going to be entertained.
As good as Eddie’s work generally was, his career was far from perfect and his WWE days in particular were host to some questionable moments. Eddie, like most wrestlers, was a complex character: an apparent Jekyll and Hyde figure,...

Nick Nemeth has been under contract to the WWE since 2004, which is a lot longer than fans might think. But then, even before bleaching his hair blonde, he served as a caddy for Chavo Guerrero in late 2005 before becoming a member of The Spirit Squad shortly thereafter, then known as Nicky.
It was’t until September 2008 that Nemeth resurfaced on WWE TV as Dolph Ziggler, branching out into singles competition and mixing it up with the established likes of Batista and Jeff Hardy. He quickly proved his worth as a star on the rise with his natural in-ring abilities, but for one reason or another, he has yet to reach his full potential in WWE.
It’s been nearly seven years since Ziggler was reintroduced into storylines, and although he’s found much success on his own, he has all the tools to be a top-tier player in WWE.

The great, strangely stirring new Mountain Goats record Beat the Champ is ostensibly a concept album about wrestling, but it’s also an album about fandom writ large — how the seemingly trivial art forms we follow can help us learn to love, escape, and survive. The punchy single “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero” seems at first to be a ballad about the life and career of the El Paso–born wrestler, until front man/songwriter John Darnielle zooms out in the last verse: “He was my hero back when I was a kid / You let me down but Chavo never once did.” The forlorn final track “Hair Match” spells it out even more bluntly: “I loved you before I ever even knew what love was like.” John Darnielle is a man of many enthusiasms (novel-writing being his most recent one; his unflinching debut Wolf in White Van was long-listed for...

When Tna revealed that it had lost its TV deal with Us network Spike TV, many fans feared the worst. The company had already said goodbye to many of its biggest stars, including A.J Styles, Sting and Hulk Hogan and the departures of Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, Chavo Guerrero and Chris Sabin, amongst others, did nothing to ease the troubled minds of the Tna fanbase.
Booking-wise, the company’s creative direction had veered wildly out of control as wrestlers were frivolously pushed and then discarded once they failed to single-handedly save Tna from extinction.
To make matters worse, the company shamelessly aped WWE storylines in lieu of original content and, in the process, unwittingly began selling itself as a small time, second-rate promotion.
Then, with Tna’s fortunes locked into a deadly tailspin, a new deal was suddenly struck with TV network Destination America and a faster,...

Rey Mysterio is no longer a WWE contracted wrestler. WWE confirmed on Thursday February 26th that Rey had left the company and was now a free agent.
Mysterio made his WWE debut on the July 25th 2002 Smackdown, beating Chavo Guerrero in a good match. Originally used as little more than a cruiserweight and tag team wrestler, Mysterio’s consistently good performances and increasing popularity helped him transition into a main event role.
The master of the 619 accomplished more in WWE than anyone would have predicted. He won the Royal Rumble, captured the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania and competed in just about every gimmick match available. A wrestler’s as well as fans’ favourite, he was well-liked and respected backstage.
However, for all of Rey’s accomplishments, his career was often slowed down due to serious injuries and conflicts with WWE management. Sometimes, WWE did things to Rey...

The 2004 Royal Rumble match is the one that WWE really doesn’t want its fans to remember. That’s because it was the night where Chris Benoit had what was arguably the greatest performance in the history of the Rumble match. Maybe Ric Flair’s run in 1992 was better, but at the time Benoit’s was right there with him.
Three years after this big victory at the 2004 Rumble, Benoit killed his wife Nancy and son Daniel before he killed himself. It was the saddest thing that’s ever happened in WWE, so the company has done what they can to just ignore it. Benoit’s written out of their history although his matches still remain in full on WWE Network if fans want to check them out.
It’s tough to write about Benoit in a positive light. At the time, it was great to see him...

The 2002 edition of WWE Survivor Series is one of the most memorable Survivor Series events because it took place in the world’s most famous arena Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 17, 2002.
It’s a famous show because it was headlined by the first ever Elimination Chamber match in WWE history. Going into it we had no idea what the Elimination Chamber was going to look like. When WWE announced the merging of the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship last winter, they held a “Championship Ascension Ceremony” on Raw, with every world champion on the roster and several Hall of Famers in attendance. The ring was overflowing with such luminaries as Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, The Miz, Jack Swagger and Great Khali present.
It was intended to be a poignant moment, illustrating the significance of the pending title unification, but it also served to show just how many current WWE wrestlers could call themselves world champions. The current roster boasts 15 wrestlers who have held either the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship, and that doesn’t include part-timers like Booker T., The Rock, Triple H or Undertaker.
But there is a solid group of WWE superstars who have held numerous titles during their tenure with the company, without every winning a world championship.

When a wrestler gets injured in WWE, the old saying “the show must go on” comes into play. Many times a wrestler will be expected to get on with the job, suck up the pain and put forth the best match possible. Such is the talent of some wrestlers, they still actually manage to put on a first rate match-up even when injured. There’s been many examples of this over the years, top stars who were injured but unwilling to take time off. They end up working through the pain and pulling off unlikely classics.
We’ve witnessed men going into matches barely able to walk, yet still somehow producing the goods. Then you have the guys who get injured mid-match, they refuse to give up and somehow steal the show. Here we take a look at 10 wrestlers who had great matches when injured.

Michelle McCool has received an ice cold soaking from her husband The Undertaker. It was all part of the Als ice bucket challenge, the viral video sensation where celebrities get doused in ice water. The WWE Diva’s reaction to the drenching gives you some idea of how cold that water is, she responds with a shriek and shakes all over. She then nominates the man pouring the water to take the challenge, “I challenge him, I challenge my husband The-” she shouts before the video cuts out. It’s interesting that the video deliberately cuts before she says Undertaker. That’s how private the man is, yet presumably, he’s now going to post his own video within the week.
McCool also nominated a range of other wrestling superstars to take the Als ice bucket challenge. Layla, Booker T, Chavo Guerrero, Vickie Guerrero, Chili and Mvp all got the nod.

Jackson spoke about the struggling brand, saying “To be honest, as soon as I went over there and saw their operation and how they ran things, there were no plans for me to go back. There was a lot of momentum with me when I came out with Kurt Angle. I was supposed to wrestle Kurt Angle and they lost all momentum. I was like, ‘No, I’m not doing that.’ They just had no idea what they were doing, in my opinion.

Picture the scene: it’s just after Wrestlemania Xvii and we’ve witnessed the infamous Austin heel turn, a moment signalling the end of the Attitude Era and the beginning of an era Vince himself would go on to dub the Ruthless Aggression Era, a shift that saw the rises of stars like John Cena and Batista and a change in focus that concentrated much more on the in-ring action.
This didn’t mean promo and character work was simply left by the wayside however: this oft overlooked period of time saw the surge in popularity of some of the best talkers and character workers of all time, and it’s no coincidence that the one thing you’ll see in common with the majority of this list is that they were also the top workers of the time.

Professional wrestling often takes a great combination of luck, skill, and the proper know-how for a wrestling gimmick to become successful and get over with crowds all across the globe.
Sometimes, you just get the right mix of wrestler and gimmick, and everything works out perfectly. The Undertaker is a classic example of that, as he took a gimmick that probably shouldn’t have worked, but he made it a success for over two decades.
Then, there are the times when things just don’t work out, for one reason or another. We’ve seen instances where a good wrestler was saddled with a bad gimmick (Chavo Guerrero as Kerwin White, William Regal as a Man’s Man, etc), but we’ve also seen a lot of what will be discussed here… when a gimmick is something special, but it is given to the wrong person. WWE.com
Every wrestling fan that had the pleasure of living through the late 90′s and the early 2000′s will always look fondly back on the WWE’s Attitude Era. Still today hailed as one of the highest points in professional wrestling this period made superstars out of the likes of The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, catapulting them into the realm of household names.
Many fans insist that wrestling peaked during this period.,that today the WWE is a sham in comparison. A shallow husk of what it once was filled with PG rated stupidity. While it’s true that post attitude-era has given us such awful ridiculousness as the bull-rope match where Chavo Guerrero dressed as a cow and a tag team bout in which God was a legitimate participant you can’t help but wonder if we aren’t looking at the Attitude Era through rose-tinted glasses.

Tna
Shawn Hernandez has reportedly parted ways with Tna adding to the ever increasing list of departures from the company.
Hernandez has not been featured on Tna programming much this year but is a former 7 time tag team champion and was once a member of the ground breaking Lax tag team that looked to take the world by storm before the company inexplicably broke them up. Although he was often overshadowed by his former partner Homicide, Super Mex as he is sometimes known became a standout talent of his own showing amazing agility for such a big man.
Where Hernandez will end up now his contract has expired is anybody’s guess though his size would surely make him a possibility for WWE if his age doesn’t go against him. If Vince and Triple H aren’t interested he will more than likely find his way into the fold...

A few days ago we reported on a news story that David Benoit, the eldest son of Chris Benoit, had plans on wrestling a match with Chavo Guerrero Jr. in Calgary at a Hart Legacy event. The match is no longer because Chris Benoit’s close Chris Jericho got involved, reports Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The news of David’s intention to wrestle was announced on Twitter by Bret Hart’s older brother Smith. Even though David has never wrestled, Smith felt like it would get people interested about the show so he did what he could to convince him. There have been photos of David working out with wrestler Harry Smith (former WWE star Dh Smith that’s the son of Davey Boy Smith), but David has not completed wrestling training.
