Exclusive: Cary Elwes has joined Lina Roessler’s feature directorial debut Best Sellers starring Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza.
Movie follows Caine as a has-been author on a wild book tour with his young editor played by Plaza. She’s trying to save her father’s boutique publishing house, but Caine’s character would prefer to live out his days with a bottle of scotch, a cigar and his orange Tabby cat. Elwes will play Halpren Nolan, a New York Times book critic. Production is already underway in Montreal.

Roessler is a Canadian actor, writer and director. Her previous short films Little Whispers: The Vow and Winter have won several awards and screened at prestigious festivals around the globe. Plaza recently wrapped production on the feature, Black Bear, a suspenseful meta-drama, which she produced and stars in opposite Christopher Abbott and Sarah Gadon. Also upcoming for Plaza is the Netflix feature Hope from New Zealand duo Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami. After Cannes’ opening night film “The Dead Don’t Die” got the festival off to a somewhat slow start with mixed reviews, Wednesday’s two debuts, “Les Misérables” and “Bacurau,” proved that this year’s lineup will have some life in it.
Ladj Ly’s “Les Misérables” isn’t based on Victor Hugo’s classic story, but it’s set in the same region in France and has the spirit of the original. Ly (picture above) originally directed an acclaimed short in 2017 of the same name that set the stage for this larger feature focused on police brutality and crime. The Guardian critic said Ly’s feature debut had a dose of “humor, cynicism, energy and savvy” and was worthy of some comparisons to previous Palme d’Or winner Jacques Audiard’s “Dheepan.”

Five aspiring screenwriters have been given $35,000 prizes by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the 30th annual Nicholl Fellowships, a yearly competition for writers who have not yet sold scripts. The awards will be handed out at a presentation at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Wednesday, Nov. 4. That event will include a live reading of selected scenes from the winning screenplays.
