Disney Channel has given an official series order to its “Wizards of Waverly Place” sequel, this time with the working title “Wizards.” Original stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie are set to exec produce, while Gomez will appear in a guest role and Henrie will be back full time as a series regular.
Production will begin next month in Los Angeles on “Wizards,” which is aimed for a premiere later this year on both Disney Channel and Disney+. The pickup follows news in January that a pilot had been ordered for the potential return to Waverly Place.
Disney Branded Television is behind “Wizards,” with Gomez returning in the premiere episode as Alex Russo and Henrie back full time as Justin Russo. James Cameron makes movies a little differently than the rest of Hollywood. You've got your Rian Johnson types, who build narratives around relatable struggles, you've got your Todd Fields types, who fashion stories around challenging material, and you've even got your Jeff Tremaine types, who just want to make you feel something (for the sake of inclusivity, I'll go ahead and mention that horror directors fall into this category, too). Then there's Cameron who, for whatever reason, decided that movies should exist for two purposes: First, to funnel mountains of money and public interest into your personal hobbies and, second, to not so much push but shatter the current boundaries of technology. To his credit, the blueprint seems to be working pretty damn well.
Cameron wanted to poke around the submerged ruins of the Titanic, which he considered "the Mount Everest of shipwrecks," so he made "Titanic," a colossally expensive...

The longest-acting movie awards voting committee got it done in about 3½ hours this year, with the New York Film Critics Circle finally naming Focus Features’ Tár as Best film of 2022. The movie, which reps filmmaker Todd Fields return to the camera in 16 years also saw its star Cate Blanchett win Best Actress.

Nominations for the 2022 Gotham Awards were announced this morning, with Todd Fields’s TÁR topping the list with five nominations, including Best Picture, Outstanding Lead Performance (Cate Blanchett) and two Outstanding Performer noms (Noémie Merlant and Nina Hoss). But perhaps the biggest surprise is in the composition of the Best Feature category, which omitted a number of presumed awards-season heavyweights in favor of a trio of excellent, smaller-budgeted, pure independent films acquired at festivals. After two years of upheaval and unfamiliarity at the box office, there’s something refreshingly familiar about the theatrical release of “Tár.”
The acclaimed movie, directed by Todd Fields and starring Cate Blanchett as a world-famous conductor embroiled in a controversy of her own making, generated a stellar 160,000 from four theaters (two in New York City and two in Los Angeles) over the weekend, averaging a mighty 40,000 per location. Next weekend, it’s expanding its theater count (ever so slightly), to 30 new venues in 10 domestic markets. That kind of steady and deliberately paced rollout, one that relies almost entirely on positive word-of-mouth, is about as traditional as it gets for an arthouse film. Yet for most of the pandemic, it was rendered obsolete.
“We felt like this movie harkened back to pre-covid releases, where it demanded to have that kind of attention of New York and Los Angeles openings,” says Lisa Bunnell,...

Cate Blanchett stunned audiences on Monday night at the New York Film Festival with her commanding performance as Lydia Tár — a fictional celebrity composer who experiences a grand fall from grace after her past comes back to haunt her.
When writer-director Todd Fields premiered “Tár” last month at the Venice Film Festival, the film generated instant Oscar buzz and received a six-minute standing ovation. Now, it’s gearing up for a limited release in select theaters later this week.
On the red carpet at the North American premiere of “Tár,” Blanchett spoke with Variety about the parallels between Lydia Tár’s ferocious musical ambitions and her own illustrious acting career.
“Any parallels between my experience and her experience will just be there,” Blanchett said. “I had the experience of running a major cultural institution. Lydia is an artist, too. She’s a musician running, as the film describes, one of...

With the film festivals in Venice, Toronto and Telluride now complete, a critical period for the box office is about to begin.
Oscar contenders like Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” two wide-release films with recognizable directors and casts, easy-to-market plots and plenty of awards potential seem poised to perform well in theaters for weeks if not months. And unless the spread of another Covid variant sends headlines of escalating case rates back into the news cycle this winter, the older audiences who drive specialty film box office have less reason to stay home.
While none of the films from the fall festivals will make what this winter’s big blockbuster sequels are projected to earn, the overall box office depends on several of these art-house films luring moviegoers in numbers that are comparable to the pre-pandemic era. And that remains a big question for everyone in the indie film world.

Will Box Office Success Help ‘The Woman King,’ ‘Elvis’ and Other Studio Hits Stay in the Oscar Race?
It’s been proven time and time again that Academy Award attention has little to do with box office glory. Just look at recent winners like “Moonlight,” “The Hurt Locker,” or “Coda,” the first streaming movie to land the Oscar’s top prize, all of which were more beloved than seen, at least by the general public.
But during a year in which several commercial movies, including “Top Gun: Maverick” (1.44 billion globally and counting), “Elvis” (284 million globally) “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (scheduled for Nov. 11) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (scheduled for Dec. 16), look to find themselves in the awards race, film industry analysts believe the box office may play a part in keeping movies from major studios in the conversation.
Another Oscar hopeful that has been well received by audiences is Sony’s historical action-epic “The Woman King,” which opened over the weekend to a strong 19 million. The studio...

In 2004, Fisher Stevens went to Ohio with a coalition of artists to help John Kerry get elected president. It didn’t work, but Stevens — an actor-turned-director best known for campy roles in a string of ’80s and ’90s films such as “Short Circuit” and “Hackers” — emerged a changed man. “It was a fucked-up time,” Stevens recalled over lunch near his offices in downtown Manhattan, “but this a whole other fucked-up time.”
Flash forward a dozen years and Stevens is enmeshed in a new stage of his career, as a prolific documentarian who moonlights as an actor. Six years ago, he won an Oscar as a co-producer of “The Cove,” photographer-turned-filmmaker Louie Psihoyos’ thrilling exposé of the Japanese fishing industry. By then, he had stepped away from GreeneStreet Films, the independent production company he started in 1996 with John Penotti. Showtime is looking to partner with Stephen Colbert to give election night viewers an alternative to news coverage.
The network is in talks to air a live election special hosted by the host from sister CBS’ “The Late Show.”

Last summer both directors Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) and Todd Fields (Little Children) were said to be developing films about the headline-making Army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl after the United States government exchanged five captured, high-ranking Taliban operatives in order to get the captured American prisoner of war back from Taliban captivity. Now it appears Bigelow will follow through as a Deadline feature that has Mike Fleming yammering with former Variety editor Peter Bart reveals the director has put the thriller Triple Frontier on the backburner yet again to focus on the Bergdahl project. In the wake of the success of American Sniper, this seems like a smart move for Bigelow, especially considering the controversial subject matter. Following the exchange for Bergdahl's release, there was a wave of outrage as accusations of Bergdahl deserting his base voluntarily surfaced, which raised questions as to his role in the war and the...

At just 32 years old Mike Cahill has amassed a small but strong list of credits to his name. While studying economics at Georgetown University Cahill met Brit Marling, and a shared passion for cinema resulted in them collaborating on short films which Cahill would direct and Marling would star in. Several years later the pair worked on a documentary entitled Boxers and Ballerinas that explored the conflict between the U.S. and Cuba.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. has named David Lynch's "Mullholland Dr." the best film of the past decade.
In announcing its choice, the organization said, "Lynch's film stands as both a cautionary tale and a mascot for the triumph of art and personal vision in an industry that, from where we sit, often seems actively devoted to the suppression of both."
"Mulholland" beat out 189 other selected titles, which were chosen by 41 LAFCA members who participated in the vote. In 2001, "Mulholland Dr." was the group's runner-up for best picture, placing second to Todd Fields' "In the Bedroom."
In addition to "Mulholland," LAFCA's top films of the decade, in order, are: Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood"; Michael Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"; Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain"; Joel and Ethan Coen's "No Country for Old Men," which tied with David Fincher's "Zodiac"; Edward Yang...

One name that keeps being mentioned as a possible Freddy Krueger in the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot is Jackie Earle Haley, and it's starting to look more and more like the role is his if rumors swirling around today on the Net can be believed.
Bloody Disgusting claims that Haley is now in "final talks" with the powers-that-be and we can "expect an official announcement as early as next week." He definitely made one helluva Rorschach, and anyone who caught him as sex offender Ronnie McGorvey in Todd Fields' Little Children knows he can play someone who's creepy yet oddly sympathetic, which would seem to fit this new version of Freddy to a "t".
In a related story, Bd has Kyle Gallner (The Haunting In Connecticut) in final talks as well to play "Quentin, the podcast host and Johnny Depp character."
Guess we'll find out soon if...
