MaltinFest is taking place this weekend at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and we have details on a special screening of Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla. Taking place this Sunday at 8:30pm, the screening is an ultra-rare 35mm print that was donated to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by Bela Lugosi Jr. Here's what Leonard Maltin had to say about the under-seen film:
"Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla is one-of-a-kind… a patently terrible movie that I find utterly fascinating. It features the great Lugosi playing a mad scientist opposite a nightclub duo named Duke Mitchell and Sammy Petrillo, who were the poor man’s Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis—at a time when Martin and Lewis were the hottest act in show business! It was directed by B-movie specialist William Beaudine and features Charles Gemora in his world-famous gorilla suit. It will only cost...

The Los Angeles Film Festival may have come to the end of its days after its final edition last fall, the TCM Classic Film Festival wrapped its 10th year last month, and AFI Fest waits until Oscar season to trot out contenders. But now the town has a brand new festival of a very different stripe, and it is taking place right in the heart of Hollywood.
MaltinFest, the brainchild of famed film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, his daughter Jessie (who pitched the idea to her dad) and wife Alice, is set to launch its first edition at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on Friday, and it will be running all weekend. It is sort of the West Coast answer to the venerable EbertFest in Chicago, which the late Pulitzer Prize-winning critic started to largely honor overlooked films he admired (it has been carried on in style by Ebert...

With so many incredible films released worldwide each year, it's difficult to keep track of them over time. Leonard Maltin's Maltinfest aims to shine a light on some of those films, or as he puts it, "the films that got away." Some of the films in the lineup include Tim Burton's Big Eyes, Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla, The Death of Superman Lives, and more, and Joe Dante and Josh Olson will also be on hand to record an episode of The Movies That Made Me podcast, with Maltin as their special guest.
"World-renowned film critic and historian Leonard Maltin has spent over 50 years writing about and championing movies. Now he wants to showcase some of “the films that got away.”
Every year, good films are made and released but somehow fly under the radar, never finding the recognition they deserve. Alice, Leonard and Jessie Maltin created...

I first became aware of director Maggie Greenwald’s work in 1993, when her extraordinary Western The Ballad of Little Jo was released. That film, the story of a woman choosing to live as a man rather than yield to patriarchal society’s demands and expectations, established a number of ongoing concerns in Greenwald’s work: a richly observed sense of anthropological detail; a dynamic sense of light, color and composition designed to portray the past with immediacy rather than distance; and a concern with the intersection between the personal and the political that makes her films both timely and timeless. All of […]...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

The producer of Dear White People (pictured) and In The Cut delivered words of encouragement in her keynote address at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles at the weekend.
“I thought there was something wrong with me and I was having such a hard time making it,” said Brown on Sunday as she reflected on early efforts to break into the business. “I thought, ‘Am I a fraud?’ And then the big one – ‘Do I deserve this?’ That mental mind-fuck is exhausting. It kept me ‘apart from’, instead of ‘a part of.’”
Earlier in her address, Brown told attendees at the DGA Theater, “You have a story to tell that’s worthy. You have experience to share. You have a valid point of view and you should know this.”

Being a first-time filmmaker with a movie at Sundance is a nerve-racking, exhausting endeavor. Even worse? Also being one of the leads. As Clea Duvall, the writer/director/star of The Intervention, revealed during the Vulture-moderated Women in Film panel and celebration in Park City, "I woke up every day not knowing how we were going to get done what we needed to get done." The Women in Film event, now in its tenth year, was a discussion between female directors who had films in the festival, and Duvall was sitting alongside fellow panelists Meera Menon (Equity), Sian Heder (Tallulah), Maggie Greenwald (Sophie and the Rising Sun), and Sheena Joyce (A Hug From Paul Ryan) as she discussed her experiences working on The Intervention. Despite having a number of credits to her name, including Girl, Interrupted, Argo, American Horror Story, and Better Call Saul, Duvall admitted that starring in her...

Rhea Carver (Mamet) is different. She makes art and clothes from rubbish she picks up from the ground, her family are reclusive artists and this leads to trouble in school as she is ridiculed for her strange behaviour. When she falls in love with Oliver (Underwood) from her school she awakens a power within herself which stems from an ancient family secret. This leads her on a tale of wonder and magic as she tries to figure out who she is and what she can do with this new found power.
The Last Keepers is a tale of love and magic. It deals with the awkwardness of high school, bullying, young romance and family troubles, sometimes to an almost cheesy level but...

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality.
