Paramount Global reportedly turned down billions for Showtime in favor of many more “Billions.”
As first reported last week by The Wall Street Journal, Paramount recently declined a $3 billion offer for Showtime by former executive David Nevins and his backers at private-equity firm General Atlantic. That’s a hefty — and seemingly generous — price tag for a brand effectively being buried into Paramount+. IndieWire reached out to representatives for both Paramount Global and General Atlantic but did not immediately hear back.
It also wasn’t the first multibillion dollar offer for the premium-cable channel that brought us “Homeland” and “Shameless.” Lionsgate wanted to merge Showtime with Starz, the Journal wrote. Starz, bought by Lionsgate in 2016 for $4.4 billion, is the one up for sale these days. The owner would be lucky to sell Starz for half that today, which should demonstrate valuation trends for these premium-cable brands in a streaming world.

“American Housewife” co-star Carly Hughes has left the ABC sitcom, claiming discrimination and a “toxic environment” on set.

“Homicide: Life on the Street.” “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” “24.” “Battlestar Galactica.” “The Killing.” Any fan of great television has loved at least one show featuring Michelle Forbes, who’s been a memorable on-screen force for over 25 years.
That said, relatively early in her career the talented actress earned a bit of a reputation for being reluctant to sign onto series full-time, mostly sticking to recurring roles that didn’t require a serious commitment.
But one of the benefits to the age of “Peak TV” is that Forbes no longer finds herself in situations where people want to “own” her, and she’s able to dive into a variety of projects. For example, the new Epix series “Berlin Station,” in which Forbes gets to play in the realm of spies and intrigue, as the internal branch chief of a CIA office in Berlin.

Epix is getting into the scripted business right at the peak of “Peak TV.” But for channel president and CEO Mark Greenberg, the move into original series is the culmination of a plan first put into place nine years ago.
From the beginning, he told IndieWire, “Part of the game plan was original series.” But first, the premium service, a joint venture between Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM, had to reach critical mass. A deal with Time Warner Cable two years ago upped Epix’s availability to 50 million homes, giving the channel reason to expand its brand.
Under programming head Jocelyn Diaz (who joined in 2015), Epix is kicking off its scripted lineup this fall with the spy thriller “Berlin Station” and the political satire “Graves.” A TV adaptation of “Get Shorty” will follow in 2017. Epix also continues to air specials and documentaries, including the new series “America Divided,” a discussion about inequality in the U.

This is a nice — if predictable — pickup for Epix, which has been struggling to become a fixture on pay TV distributors’ premium channel lineups. Bright House is the No. 6 cable company, with about 2M video subscribers including a heavy concentration in Florida. But most of its carriage deals are handled by Time Warner Cable. And TWC gave a big boost to the Viacom-Lionsgate-MGM-owned service in March when it became the biggest pay TV operator to carry Epix. With a 90-day free introduction, Epix “has become one of Time Warner Cable’s most-watched networks,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told analysts last week. Distributors including Comcast and DirecTV have questioned the need to offer a movie-oriented premium channel in addition to ones controlled by HBO, Showtime and Starz. Bright House says that starting yesterday it has offered Epix, Epix 2, Epix 3 and Epix Drive-In as linear channels and on demand, adding...

The arrangement more than doubles Amazon Prime Instant Video’s offerings, and knocks some of the wind out of its chief competitor: Netflix. The streaming video company’s shares were down about 10% shortly after the market opened this morning. Epix’ new agreement with Amazon comes just days after the premium movie service’s exclusivity arrangement with Netflix expired. Films from Epix — backed by Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate — will now appear on Amazon and Netflix about 90 days after they run on traditional pay TV. Epix’ announcement also comes just before Amazon’s press conference on Thursday where it’s expected to unveil a new line of Kindle Fire tablets — possibly including a model with an 8.9-inch screen that could compete more directly with Apple’s iPad. “We think customers will really enjoy watching new titles like The Avengers, Iron Man 2 and The Hunger Games on their Kindle Fire, PlayStation 3, Xbox,...

Wilco did a time warp today: the band released a music video that will take you back to the '90s, and Jeff Tweedy performed a song that will take you back to 2009. First, there's "Born Alone," a title that for some reason sorely depresses me. But the tune itself is actually a pretty decent driving number, culled from the band's forthcoming "The Whole Love." And, actually, it's more of a mix of '70s era Paul McCartney road videos with that whole '90s collage love-in. It was directed by Mark Greenberg, who has previously collaborated on Wilco's albums. "The Whole Love"...

William Shatner seems to expand his resume about as many times as he narrowly escaped death on the original Star Trek tv series. TV guest star (Twilight Zone, Outer Limits), TV star (Star Trek, T.J. Hooker, Boston Legal, $#*! My Dad Says), movie star (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II-vi, Star Trek: Generations, Miss Congeniality), as well as writer, director, producer, voice artist, talk show host, author. Now he has added “documentarian” to the list. The Captains is, as you might have guessed, a documentary about the captains of the Star Trek multiverse.
This documentary seems almost like a companion piece to The Biography Channel’s The Captains of the Final Frontier (2010). He must have been familiar with it, given that he has had two series on that channel (Aftermath with William Shatner, Shatner’s Raw Nerve). That documentary was about the Trek franchise and featured interviews with actors,...
