After announcing late Wednesday afternoon that “Real Time” will start producing new episodes without writers amid the ongoing strike, Bill Maher received harsh criticism not only from members of the the Writers Guild of America and their supporters, but also from the guild itself.
WGA West, which Maher belongs to, said in a statement that the decision to resume the show “while his guild is on strike” is “disappointing,” and urged him to “honor more than the ‘spirit of the strike,'” referencing a quote from Maher’s announcement earlier Wednesday.
Maher, the guild statement continued, “is obligated to follow the strike rules and not perform any writing service.” And confirming the guild intends to picket the show, WGA added “It is difficult to imagine how @RealTimers can go forward without a violation of WGA strike rules taking place.”

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming app Max changed its name Tuesday, dropping the “HBO” from HBO Max when it merged with Discovery+. But as an eagle-eyed viewer discovered later in the day, it also changed how basic details about a film are listed. And movie fans are very displeased.
On Tuesday night, film commentator (and Twitter power user) John Frankensteiner shared a screengrab of the details section from the landing page for the film “Raging Bull,” as it currently appears on Max.
While the film’s principle actors are listed under “starring,” director Martin Scorsese, writers Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin, and producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, are lumped together under a single listing: “Creators.” Included with them are Peter Savage, author of the book that inspired the film, and boxer Jake Lamotta whose life is depicted in it. Their individual roles are not differentiated.

Julie Plec is ramping up her development slate and has put a slew of projects into the pipeline including an adaptation of YA novel Running Out of Time at Peacock.
It comes after a number of shows from The Vampire Diaries co-creator were axed earlier this spring including Legacies, Roswell, New Mexico and The Endgame.
Plec and her production banner My So-Called Company signed a mega-multi-year overall deal with Universal Television in 2020. She said that when she signed that deal she told the studio that she believes in “earning my keep” and added that “this slate reflects that promise”.
The first project set is Clifton, based on Margaret Peterson Haddix’s Running Out of Time. The series, which is in the works at NBCU streamer Peacock, follows 17-year-old Jazzie Smith, who was born and raised in the idyllic, island village of Clifton – a sanctuary for runaway slaves and others who...

It’s been a rough first two years for Bob Chapek in Disney’s top job.
First came the pandemic, which started just days into Chapek’s tenure as CEO, bringing the entertainment industry to a halt.
With moviegoing hampered by Covid even after theaters reopened, Disney started releasing movies on streaming, which led to Chapek’s second big challenge: alienating top talent. Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit and the strongly worded public exchanges with Disney that followed drew gasps in Hollywood and raised questions over how the storied studio would treat its biggest stars under Chapek, a Hollywood outsider who came from Disney’s park division.
Now Chapek is facing his biggest test to date: discontent within his own company. The open internal revolt was sparked by Disney’s botched response to Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill which would ban classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender...

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek issued a memo to staff members March 7 to state that the corporation “unequivocally” supports LGBTQ+ rights, despite donating to “Don’t Say Gay” bill backers for years. But Disney employees quickly took to Twitter to voice their disdain, calling the statement too, little too late.
“[Disney is] starting to include more LGBT characters that let kids know that being gay is all right. But when they have donated to the sponsors and co-sponsors of the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill and they have made no position against this bill, and they are going to continue donating to these politicians, they are essentially saying that this bill is Ok,” animation writer Benjamin Siemon said in a video posted on Twitter. “This bill is going to hurt kids, and that’s why I’m asking Disney to please take a position on the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill...

As the Walt Disney Co. takes heat for a report detailing how the company has financially backed all of the sponsors of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, employees and artists associated with Disney have taken to social media to criticize its response to the bill.
Particularly upsetting many staffers is CEO Bob Chapek’s memo expressing “unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ+ community” despite the lack of a public statement opposing the bill, which would limit discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
The email, which Chapek sent to Disney staffers on Monday, reads: “In terms of our communities, we are and will continue to be a leader in supporting organizations that champion diversity. In 2021, we provided nearly $3 million to support the work of LGBTQ+ organizations. And, we have a long history of supporting important events like Pride parades.” Directly addressing Disney’s silence on the bill,...

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 12: “Who You Really Are”
Written by Drew Z. Greenberg
Directed by Roxann Dawson
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
Sif’s first appearance on Agents of Shield in “Yes Men” is a highlight in an otherwise uneven first season. It is thus strange that in season two, Sif’s big return in “Who You Really Are” is a bit of a letdown.
“Who You Really Are” isn’t a bad episode, per se. As Sif, Jaimie Alexander gets a few good moments of comic relief (“Odin? You’ve met him!” “Shut up!”), and all of the action scenes are well-executed, particularly the fights between Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi Morse and Vin-Tak, played by guest star Eddie McClintock. The gun falling apart in Skye’s hand is also a smart way to show off her powers, and how her lack of control over them can actually hurt her.

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 4, “I Will Face My Enemy”
Written by Kevin Tancharoen
Directed by Drew Z. Greenberg
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm Et on ABC
There is nothing quite like a good art heist adventure, and Agents of Shield tries its hand at it in “I Will Face My Enemy.” Coulson and May attend a gala in order to steal a painting with valuable information written on the back. Before they can recover the painting, however, their cover is compromised by General Glenn Talbot, and someone else snatches up the painting first. The resulting episode is a loving tribute to the art heist sub-genre in the vein of James Bond and The Thomas Crown Affair with a big party, sexy ballroom dancing, and tricky laser alarms.
Every trope from the art heist sub-genre is present in the episode, from the overly showy dancing to the retina scan/laser alarm defense system.

Coulson and co. continue a stellar run of form in the latest episode of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Here’s Rob’s review…
This review contains spoilers.
2.4 Face My Enemy
At the four episode mark last year, a few people had probably already started getting fed up with Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and switching off (even though Eye Spy was one of the strongest from that period).
This year though, the show is in undeniably rude health, with a fourth episode that boasts action, laughs, espionage and links to the McU – viewers who’ve lasted the distance are being continually rewarded for their faith, it would seem. The show has rarely let up the pace since Captain America: The Winter Soldier rattled the cage, and this week we continue to see the fallout of that film’s revelations playing out in gleefully entertaining fashion.
As with last week, it’s another direct confrontation between S.

Slade kidnaps Thea as a part of his plot to destroy Oliver. Will Team Arrow save her in time? Will Roy be shirtless?
Last year, Oliver and his merry band of do-gooders were faced with a shadowy enemy with an unknown agenda. They only finally figured out the enemy was Malcolm Merlyn and that he wanted to destroy the Glades at the very end. This year, Oliver and Team Arrow know who their enemy is and what he wants and they’re utterly unable to do anything about it.
I have to say, when it comes to building tension, these Arrow writers know what they’re doing. I don’t think any show has managed to build up to the Big Bad this well since Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Given that Buffy writer alum Drew Greenberg is one of the masterminds of the show, I guess that sort of makes sense.

Arrow Season 2, Episode 18 “Deathstroke”
Written by Marc Guggenheim & Drew Z. Greenberg
Directed by Guy Bee
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm Et on The CW
Although there’s still five episodes left in the season, much of “Deathstroke” feels rushed, so excited to get to the next step in Slade’s endlessly layered plan to destroy Oliver Queen, that it doesn’t take a lot of time to pause and look at the dramas it just created. In a way, there’s almost too much momentum in the episode, which incorporates everything from Queen Consolidated, Oliver’s relationship with his mother, and Roy’s feelings for Thea all under the orange-and-black umbrella of Deathstroke (a name Slade admits is flamboyant, but it’s growing on him). “Deathstroke” marks the clear beginning of Arrow‘s third act, a series of events that snowball to massive proportions in merely an hour’s time.

Arrow Season 2, Episode 12 “Tremors”
Written by Marc Guggenheim & Drew Z. Greenberg
Directed by Guy Bee
Airs Wednesday nights at 8pm Et on The CW
Arrow‘s second season was already an ambitious one before “Tremors”: although it’s stuttered on a few subplots, the show’s ability to integrate Sarah Lance, a cameo by Barry Allen, Moira’s trial, Mirakuru, Roy/Slade getting injected with it, and a dozen other arcs (Brother Blood! League of Assassins! Solomon Grundy!) has been impressive, to say the least. “Tremors” is another entertaining hour that continues on the same path, especially in the second half of the episode, where the twists, turns, and new directions are flying all over the place – but by the time the roller coaster ended with the re-emergence of Sarah in Starling City, I couldn’t help but wonder if the show’s building a little too much.
