40 years later, the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street" has more than earned its place in cinema history as a slasher classic. Written and directed by the late (and very much missed) Wes Craven, the 1984 horror film follows a group of teens from Springwood, Ohio -- which looks suspiciously like Los Angeles in several shots, but charmingly so -- as they begin dreaming of the same mysterious figure. This man, whose face is covered in burn marks and wears a glove armed with razor blades, is no shared figment of their imagination. He's Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), the vengeful ghost of a local child murderer who now has the power to kill his victims in their sleep.
Why is he vengeful? Freddy, you see, was eventually arrested but avoided punishment after getting off on a legal technicality. In retaliation, his victims' loved ones hunted him down and burnt him to death,...

CineSavant obsesses over yet another obscure bit of cinematic sociology: a glossy pre-Code MGM melodrama about mothers and war, which half-debates issues like pacifism, the losses of world war one, military vigilance, cowardice, chemical WMDs and foolish idealism! But don’t worry, the title statement is the ultimate answer to everything. Oh, it’s also political sci-fi: it takes place in the future year of 1940, when New York City comes under aerial attack, with skyscrapers bombed to bits and poison gas dropped in the streets. No, this is not new, it was released in 1933.

Luise Rainer as Anna Held, The Great Ziegfeld Best Picture Academy Award winner The Great Ziegfeld (1936) will be screening tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the American Cinematheque's Aero Theater in Santa Monica. Robert Z. Leonard directed this sumptuous MGM production, starring William Powell as theatrical showman Florenz "Flo" Ziegfeld, Myrna Loy as Ziegfeld's wife Billie Burke (the good witch Glinda in The Wizard of Oz), and Luise Rainer as Anna Held. For her performance — which amounts to a supporting role, including a highly effective telephone scene — Rainer won the first of her two back-to-back Best Actress Oscars. The following year, she would take home the statuette for her Chinese peasant in Sidney Franklin's The Good Earth. Rainer, by the way, is the oldest Oscar winning performer around. The London resident turned 101 last January. Featuring cinematography by Oliver T. Marsh and others, art direction by Cedric Gibbons, costumes by Adrian,...
