Exclusive: Leonardo DiCaprio and revered environmental activist Jane Goodall will executive produce Howl, a film following an abandoned family dog and a young wolf, which will unfold from the animals’ perspective. The Promethean Pictures movie has just entered production, we can reveal. It is not an environment film per se, but the team behind it plans to give moviegoers a transformative view of the natural world.
Set against the backdrop of a harsh winter, the movie will follow Harry, a family dog who is inadvertently left home alone and whose owners then die in an accident. Harry goes through a rollercoaster survival ride that brings him into contact with a wolf. The pair must overcome their mutual fear and suspicion, and ultimately they develop a close bond. The story is animal-led, but there will be some human characters with casting news to follow.

John Goodman was last nominated for an Emmy way back in 2010 when he earned a Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor bid for “You Don’t Know Jack.”; he lost that race to David Strathairn (“Temple Grandin”). The TV vet could be about to make a return to the Emmys for the first time in a lucky 13 years thanks to his ongoing role in the “Roseanne” sequel series “The Conners.”
“The Conners” follows the titular working-class family struggling through day-to-day life in Illinois after the sudden death of the original show’s title character Roseanne (Roseanne Barr). Goodman plays Dan Conner, who was the husband to Roseanne and the father to their four children: Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Becky (Lecy Goranson), DJ (Michael Fishman), and Jerry Garcia (who was retconned in “The Conners”).
As Dan, Goodman exudes the warm, everyman charm he has long had a high currency in throughout his career.

Altitude Films has debuted a new trailer for Ric Burns’ documentary ‘Oliver Sacks: His Own Life.’
Oliver Sacks was a man of extremes. In his youth, he was a self-destructive rebel who fled London for San Francisco to reinvent himself as a bodybuilding biker, struggling with drug addiction and his own sexuality. In his maturity, he became a pioneering neurologist and the author of best-sellers such as Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat. Filmed just weeks after receiving a terminal diagnosis with full access to the man himself and those closest to him.
The doc celebrates Sacks’ incredible life and reminds us of his most important teaching: that our ability to connect with others is what truly makes us human.
Directed by documentary filmmaker Ric Burns, the film features exclusive interviews with Jonathan Miller, Robert Silvers, Temple Grandin, Christof Koch, Robert Krulwich, Lawrence Weschler, Roberto Calasso,...

Undead things come to those who wait. After its planned spring premiere was delayed by the coronavirus outbreak, AMC’s second offshoot of The Walking Dead, World Beyond, at last has a new start date, it was announced at the show’s Comic-Con @ Home panel Friday: Sunday, Oct. 4, at 10/9c, immediately following the finale-that’s-no-longer-a-finale of the mother ship. A special episode of Talking Dead will air afterwards and include discussions of both The Walking Dead’s “finale” and World Beyond’s premiere.
The new show — billed as a two-season limited event — revolves around the first generation of survivors raised after the zombie apocalypse.

Oliver Sacks lived a lot of life, putting primacy on the brain throughout his career as a neurologist as the most incredible thing in the universe. But during that life, which ended in 2015, he also battled drug addiction, cancer, homophobia, and a medical establishment that wouldn’t take him seriously for decades. His towering achievements and personal struggles are chronicled in the new documentary “Oliver Sacks: His Own Life,” directed by Ric Burns and coming later this summer. IndieWire shares the exclusive first trailer below.
Sacks, perhaps best known for his literary works “Awakenings” and “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat,” was an intrepid explorer of cognitive worlds who helped us redefine how the brain and mind work. The film features exclusive interviews conducted with Sacks just weeks after his terminal diagnosis, leading up to his death, along with nearly two dozen testimonials from family, colleagues, patients,...

Much like Moira Rose, the newly-impoverished socialite and former soap opera star she plays on “Schitt’s Creek,” actress and comedienne Catherine O’Hara is a woman of many talents. Though she is most well known for her comedic roles, she is also a skilled dramatic actress and a gifted writer. One of her most unique skills, which is showcased brilliantly in her Pop TV series, is her ability to capture a character’s bizarre manner of speaking in a way that is both hilarious but also believable. O’Hara’s long and varied career is captured in our gallery of her greatest film roles.
See ‘Schitt’s Creek’: Experts say Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara will enter Emmy history books
Like many of her contemporaries, O’Hara got her start on the Canadian sketch TV show “Sctv,” for which she won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing For a Variety Series.

According to a tweet from The Walking Dead's Twitter account, a definite date has not been narrowed down, but the show will premiere "later this year."

Temple Grandin, Ph.D., the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world, and Emmy Award-winning actor and best-selling author Henry Winkler will be the featured speakers at Gatepath’s annual Power of Possibilities event.
This year’s event, taking place on May 14, 2020 at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront in Burlingame, CA, will commemorate Gatepath’s 100th anniversary of serving children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Dr. Grandin, a sought-after speaker who inspires and motivates others through her story, did not talk until she was three-and-a-half years old. At the time she was diagnosed with autism, her parents were told she should be institutionalized. Dr. Grandin describes the early period of her life as “groping her way from the far side of darkness” in her first book Emergence: Labeled Autistic, a book that stunned the world because until its publication, most professionals and parents assumed that an...

HBO is developing drama series Trader, with Tika Sumpter (Southside With You) set to executive produce and intended to star.
Written by Sonya Winton and Jonathan Kidd (Lovecraft Country), Trader is a contemporary re-imagining of the Robin Hood saga told through the perspective of a half-Nigerian and half-Black American female, Adefolke Girabaldi (a role earmarked for Sumpter), an investing wunderkind and trading forecast prodigy on Wall Street. As an activist short seller, Adefolke will wield her billion-dollar hedge fund as a sword to eviscerate predatory corporations that exploit the poor, all while navigating the unscrupulous world of the Girabaldi family who are the center of New York City’s black aristocracy where money, privilege, and racism intersect in sometimes insidious ways.
Winton and Kidd executive produce alongside Sumpter and her manager, Emily Gerson Saines, producer of HBO’s Temple Grandin and founder of Brookside Artist Management.

Early in Gary Shteyngart’s funny, frightening new novel, Seema — wife of Barry Cohen, a morally handicapped and wildly successful hedge fund manager — recalls her earliest impressions of him. “A man that rich couldn’t be stupid,” she’d thought. The 62nd installment of the Primetime Emmy Awards was a memorable one.
Held exactly eight years ago (on an extra-early date, due to pro football this-and-that), the NBC telecastsaw the freshman sitcom Modern Family walk away with no less than a half-dozen awards (after racking up 14 total nominations). Mad Men would be named Best Drama for a third straight year and Temple Grandin commenced what turned out to be a seemingly endless onslaught at every applicable awards show, as the TV-movie tied an Emmy record with five major wins.
It was back when the Emmys were fun — anticipated, not dreaded.

If you can read the stories of a whole bunch of women pioneers — such as the ones in the book I’m about to discuss — without being at least a little bit annoyed at men in general, frankly there’s something wrong with you.
And you can take “men in general” as expansively as you want, o dudes who insist “man” is always and ever a perfectly good word to mean “humanity.” There’s enough shittiness and negativity in the world for at least two genders.
But damn did every single advance for women come because a woman demanded it, fought for it, and faced down multiple men who insisted that not only shouldn’t she do that, it was physically impossible for her to do it, so she should just go back her knitting and housekeeping.
(And if I hear a single “not all men,” I’m going to smack you so hard.

Chickens crowded into a confined feeding shed they never leave in their brief lives, in a scene from the documentary Eating Animals. Courtesy of IFC.
Eating Animals has its title slightly wrong. The documentary should have been called “Factory Farming Animals,” because that is its real focus. In a conversation between Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) and Bill Hader (“Barry”) for Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” presented by Shutterstock, the two comedians discuss Bill Hader’s terror-inducing audition process for “Saturday Night Live” where laughing is not encouraged among the judges.

When it came time for Hader to step up, he introduced himself and the character he created: Vinny Vedecci. “I just immediately started doing the: ‘Well, sit down. Don’t get offended.’ And Tina Fey, who I could see, went: ‘Ha!’ And I went: ‘Oh, God. Okay, good.’ And I relaxed,” Hader confessed.
The “Barry” star and longtime “SNL” veteran also disclosed how he could not help but laugh uncontrollably during Kate McKinnon’s audition for the sketch series.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains mild spoilers from “The Good Doctor” episode titled “Point Three Percent.”]
“The Good Doctor” has been seen as an inspirational, feel-good drama, but it’s also surprisingly funny. The humor doesn’t stem from mocking Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, but it is often involved in how his unique outlook on life is juxtaposed with a mainstream viewpoint.
In a Facebook Live conversation that Highmore had with Autism Society of America, the actor said, “I like the humor of the show. I think a lot of that comes from Shaun’s hopeful, optimistic outlook on life. He always tries to see the good in people. It’s nice to play a role in which you can be happy a lot of the time.”

Felines seems to have a magnetic attraction to boxes, even ones made out of tape. So what powers your kitty’s drive to sit in all things square and cardboard? There’s more scientific reason behind it than you might suspect.
According to The Washington Post, it all goes back to childhood. Kittens seek out the warmth and comfort of their mom’s snuggling embrace and the cuddles provided by their fellow litter mates. This is one of the reasons why swaddling calms a cat down. In these cases, the close contact releases endorphins,...

According to a new study out of Northern Illinois University, dogs have something else to bark about.
The study, authored by Niu alumnus Camille King and Niu professor Thomas Smith, found that young dogs are susceptible to stress-induced gray hair, just like we are.
King and Smith — along with animal behaviorist Peter Borchelt and renowned author/researcher Temple Grandin — visited dog parks, dog shows, veterinary clinics and other venues, examining 400 dogs and collecting dog behavior questionnaires from their owners, a press release says. The dogs were also independently rated on the extent of their muzzle grayness.

For all the talk of sequels, reboots, and live-action remakes, it can be comforting to be confronted with the occasional reminder that Hollywood is still capable of surprising us. Case in point: “The Accountant,” a new Warner Bros. action movie in which Ben Affleck plays an ass-kicking autistic man who travels the globe under a series of aliases and performs elite maths for some of the world’s most dangerous people. This is a real thing starring real people and made with real money (although not very much of it, as the film’s $40 million budget pales in comparison to the $175 million that the same studio recently spent on the production of “Suicide Squad”).
And though — or perhaps because — director Gavin O’Connor shoots this strange October surprise full of the same scrappy, ball-swinging gravitas that he brought to the more grounded likes of “Miracle” and “Warrior,” it is still some very,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month.

American Horror Story, and in particular this season's "Freak Show," has about as much forward progression as a treadmill. This week's episode trudged ahead with its story by the smallest margin possible that could still be labeled "forward". Miraculously, the episode somehow managed to contain four plotlines: Elsa, further displaying her ruthlessness to survive on her birthday of all days, reveals a dangerous new act for the Freak Show (after surely watching Theo James perform a similar routine in Divergent); Stanley exerts pressure on Maggie to murder the Freaks; Paul indulges in a secret romance with Penny as he juggles his illicit affair with Elsa; and Dandy attempts to woo Bette and Dot much to the chagrin of his mother.
Most Quotable: Elsa dismissing Penny’s entrance into her tent as she consoles a wounded Paul, “Speaking of cheap perfume.

If history is any indicator, Emmy voters like a little, well, history in their Outstanding TV Movie winners.
The last four champs in the category — 2010’s Temple Grandin, 2009’s Grey Gardens and 2008’s Recount and 2007’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee — all had their roots in real-life characters and situations.

Previously on Glee, the Old New Directions returned to send the New New Directions off into the abyss while the Old New New Directions prepared to finally graduate from high school. April Rhodes and Holly Holiday also returned, to get soused up in the rafters of the theater and concoct shenanigans for saving the glee club one more time.
April and Holly are palling around the faculty lounge at McKinley, trying to figure out how to make the most out of a game of Kill, Marry, or Bone that prominently features Mr. Schue as the most bone-able contestant. Apparently Sue only hears the words “Will” and “Kill” because she scoots in there with a fire in her eyes and a crossbow strapped to her back. She’s happy to find her friend Holly hanging out; they’ve grown so close these last few days that they bought matching track suits...

In Glee episode “New Directions,” it’s finally time to say goodbye to the glee club that brought them all together in the first place – and for some to join the others in New York City.
Glee Recap
Scheming in the staff lunchroom to keep the New Directions alive are April Rhodes (Kristen Chenoweth) and Holly Holiday (Gwyneth Paltrow). Holly, playing on Sue Sylvester’s (Jane Lynch) admiration for her, asks if there’s a way to weave music into some of the school’s other clubs. Sue doesn’t seem too into the idea, but allows for a trial run.
Walking through the halls of McKingley High, Tina Cohen Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) is monologue-ing about her future. She, unlike the rest of the bunch, doesn’t really have any idea what’s next for her. She applied late to colleges, and hasn’t heard from safety school Ohio State.

Let's all be honest: If "Glee" Season 6 turns into a full-fledged "Friends" rip-off like the one Tina imagined when she was knocked on the head and hallucinated (what is it with that girl and passing out?), we'd all like it more than this fractured half-New York, half-Ohio (zzzz) business that's occupied Season 5.
The second half of the "Glee" 100th episode celebration, "New Directions" (i.e., the 101st episode, graduation part 2), brought some closure to the McKinley High glee club as they sang their final songs in the choir room. And for some reason, April Rhodes and Holly Holliday were there.
The episode, which also served as a coda to the entire McKinley High storyline, was alternately funny and infuriating, bringing us delightful gems like a Holly/Sue Sylvester "Amazing Race" audition video, but also a sequence that segued from Gwyneth Paltrow doing a Temple Grandin impression into an "American Hustle"-costumed,...

Now that’s what I call a field trip!
In Tuesday night’s episode of Glee, Gwyneth Paltrow again guest stars as Holly and takes the Glee Club on a field trip to a foam party — though it’s still not clear why Paltrow is dressed up like Temple Grandin at the beginning. But, she ends up shedding that look when she takes the kids back in a 70s time warp to “Party All The Time”, even though the original Eddie Murphy version was released in 1985. Get your disco on below with a sneak peek of the number:

Chicago – It’s difficult to comment upon a documentary like “The Ghosts in Our Machine,” as it advocates an important issue regarding our very nature – the relationship we have with our food and the animals that provide that food. However, the structure of the film and the centerpiece photographer profile obscures the point of view.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
That photographer is Jo-Anne McArthur, whose life’s work is capturing the images of animals – used for food and fur – in the often harsh environments of their developmental captivity. This is difficult stuff, especially if you have a relationship with an animal or just love them overall. It may change your attitude toward meat eating in any form, or it may at least provide some perspective on his ongoing “elephant in the room” – that of the inherent torture of food and fur animals before they are inevitably slaughtered. Director Liz Marshall has rendered an almost meditative film,...

The name “Coach” worked on many levels in Tuesday’s episode. Relationship Coach, specializing in how not to treat your girlfriend. Basketball Coach, with an emphasis on how to grind Winston’s gears. Strip Club Coach, expertise: how to spend your Bunny Money (okay, that was more Winston’s forte). Suffice it to say, Coach is not just a beloved ’90s sitcom anymore. And that’s just the tip of the Damon Wayans, Jr.-shaped iceberg, Newbies. While you debate in the comments whether Coach’s return measured up to expectations, I shall get to the recapping.

Once upon a time on "New Girl," there was a fitness trainer roommate named Coach. Unfortunately, the actor who played Coach, Damon Wayans Jr., got himself cast in a lead role on "Happy Endings." He disappeared, replaced semi-seamlessly by Winston.
Now, "Happy Endings" is off the air (sigh), and Coach is back in town!
But will his return mean everything that his former roommates have dreamed of for two years? Not so much. The guy doesn't even remember Jess. What does come with "Coach"? Find out in this recap.
Coach and his boys
To say that the boys of "New Girl" are excited to see Coach is an understatement. You have to wonder why though -- Coach seems to be kind of a jerk. He is dismissive of Nick's relationship, calls Winston "Shrimp Hands" for no discernible reason and completely disregards the existence of Jess.

For the first time since Bunheads premiered, an episode was evenly split between the adults and the teens.
"Money For Nothing" was thematic again, with Boo working for money, Fanny and Michelle needing money and Michelle flat out refusing to teach for it.
Boo, again proving she is the most normal of the four lead bunheads, got a job at The Oyster Bar. The assistant manager asked her to jump in the dumpster and then return into the restaurant. Might I suggest a hazmat suit to keep from smelling a walking sewage system? He wanted her to do this in a bar serving oysters, no less. Of all the things that have happened on Bunheads so far, that was by far the most unbelievable.
To round that into a product placement moment with a snack size bag of Lays potato chips made the scene all the more annoying. Please note...

Last year, the TV academy combined telefilms and miniseries into one category and the PBS four-parter "Downton Abbey" won. With seven installments this year, that show has shifted over to the drama race. Prior to the merger, HBO had held almost a complete lock on the Best TV Movie award, winning for 15 of the last 17 years of the category's existence. It took the final prize in 2010 for "Temple Grandin" and for the previous five years in a row as well. And HBO won Best Miniseries seven times since 1998. Eight of our Experts and eight Editors predict HBO will continue its winning ways as the telefilm "Game Change" is expected to claim Best Movie/Miniseries. The political drama is based on the book of the same name by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann about the 2008 presidential campaign, focusing primarily on the Republican ticket -- John McCain (Ed Harris) and Sarah Palin...

Since last year’s article was well received, I thought that it would be good to do another one this year covering three new films from different countries and genres. If you are interested in reading the previous article, I have added a link at the bottom for you to enjoy.
After Thomas (dir. Simon Shore) – 2006
Based on the book A Friend Like Henry written by Nuala Gardner, this ITV drama focuses on the story of the married couple Rob Graham (Ben Miles) and Nicola Graham (Keeley Hawes) as they struggle to control the behavior of their six-year-old autistic son, Kyle (Andrew Byrne). As Kyle hates everyday social activity, Rob and Nicola have a hard time to communicate with him that also affects their relationship.
