Gibson plays an alcoholic actor accused of violence against women in a comedy-crime thriller that would have been a lot more fun without him
The seemingly unstoppable rehabilitation of Mel Gibson continues with this Hollywood-set comedy-crime thriller in which Gibson is practically trolling us by playing Alastair Pinch, a close-to-the-bone version of himself a few years back. Pinch is an alcoholic actor accused of violence against women, although in the film his character is arrested for killing his wife, whereas in real life Gibson pleaded no contest to a battery charge. And yet, we’re supposed to think he’s charming and adorable because he can quote chunks of Hamlet and plays sweetly with his kindergarten-aged daughter (Sophie Fatu). At least this semi-satirical fiction, adapted by Howard Michael Gould from his own novel and efficiently directed by Brit Tim Kirkby, recognises that forgiveness is always around the corner for film...

‘Last Looks’ Review: It’s Weird Beard Time for Charlie Hunnam and Mel Gibson in Shaggy L.A. Whodunit
It takes some nerve casting a scandal-embattled star like Mel Gibson as a colorful TV celebrity suspected of killing his wife. Those who’ve stood by Gibson despite multiple attempts by the actor to sabotage his own career will likely admire the chutzpah of “Last Looks,” even if his flamboyantly named (and mustachioed) Alastair Pinch — a borderline-blotto, Colonel Sanders-looking Southern judge on a show called “Johnnie’s Bench” — is just a side character (the main suspect) in an overcrowded Hollywood detective story that’s got gimmicks to burn.
The ringmaster of this three-ring circus is one Charlie Waldo, a disgraced former LAPD golden boy with even wilder facial hair than Pinch. It’s like a pandemic beard, minus the pandemic.
A few years earlier, Waldo went off the grid after realizing he couldn’t undo the wrongful conviction that launched his career. Where’s Waldo now? Living in self-imposed exile — or “extraction,...

“Last Looks” isn’t your average whodunnit movie. Instead of spending two hours checking murder suspects off the list, it focuses on just one suspect. When that suspect is an eccentric Mel Gibson (“Lethal Weapon”), the audience knows they’re in for a good time. Based on a book by the same name by Howard Michael Gould, the movie follows two superstars in very different fields and chronicles what happens when their paths cross with one another.

WGA, AMPTP reach “tentative” three-year deal.
The Writers Guilds of America West and East (WGA) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a “tentative” last-minute agreement to avert the impending writers strike.
The old contract expired at midnight Pacific Time on May 1. The new deal will now need to be ratified by the WGA’s board and eventually its members.
In a statement, the WGA confirmed that the teams have “concluded negotiations and have reached a tentative agreement on terms for a new three-year collective bargaining agreement” which it said was worth “$130m more than the pattern we were expected to accept”.
The WGA cited contribution increases to the organisation’s health plan, as well as expanded protections in options and exclusivity, and an increase in Pay TV residuals, as terms that it had made gains in.
Further details of the agreement will be provided in the coming days.

The Writers Guild of America is inching a step closer toward a potential writers’ strike.
The WGA’s negotiating committee sent a letter to members on Friday, recommending that the guild’s 12,000 members take a vote on strike authorization. It did not give a timetable for such a vote, however, and such a vote would not automatically lead to a strike.
Negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Pictures & Television Producers started March 13, but without any movement, the guild is looking to take the next step.

Tim Allen has made a career out of playing an affable family man. Both in his TV series Home Improvement and his popular franchise of Santa Claus films, Allen is best known as a well-meaning Dad. However, in director Howard Michael Gould’s The Six Wives of Henry LeFay, Allen steps outside his usual image to play a guy who is not only a poor father but the worst husband since Henry the Eighth.
Henry (Allen) has been divorced four times and had one annulment. He’s currently on his sixth marriage and planning to leave his ditzy young wife for an even younger girl (one whom his daughter used to baby-sit.) He rarely even gets through a honeymoon before he begins his infidelities. He is always apologetic about his cheating ways but never genuinely remorseful. Contrary to even our own guide to what's coming out on video-on-demand and online, rumors of the demise of those shiny discs that still take up shelf space have been greatly exaggerated. Take next week, for example, in which one will only be able to enjoy the guilty pleasure of "Lake Placid 3" or the easy charm of the Adam Scott indie comedy "Passenger Side" on DVD or upgrade to high-definition for the "Alien Quadrilogy" boxed set, a rerelease of the "Back to the Future" trilogy or better yet, Criterion editions of Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" or the Japanese curiosity "Hausu" on Blu-ray. And it's not even December yet.

Michael Winship re-elected Wgae president
Signaling that it is ready to strike out in a new direction, the WGA West has elected John Wells president. Wells, who earned 52.8% of the vote, ran against the Writers United slate, headed by presidential candidate Elias Davis, which was committed to following the path set by outgoing president Patric Verrone.
But in something of a split vote, the guild also elected two members of the Writers United slate, Tom Schulman and David Weiss as vp and secretary-treasurer, respectively. Schulman pulled 55.5% of the vote, while Weiss collected 53.3%. They triumphed over two members of Wells' slate -- Howard Michael Gould, who ran for vp, and Chris Keysor, who was up for secretary-treasurer.
Verrone moves into a board seat, along with Howard A. Rodman, Dan Wilcox, Linda Burstyn, Billy Ray, Steven Schwartz, Chip Johannessen, Carleton Eastlake and Ian Deitchman. The officers and board will serve two-year terms,...

SAG’s upcoming elections have been getting some attention, but the WGA West is having an election this summer as well. The ballots go out sometime in late July or August, and are apparently due back September 17. Current WGA West president Patric Verrone is running for one of the open board seats, but not for president (I believe there are term limits). Instead, the candidates for president are John Wells and Elias Davis. For more details, see the press release below.

Board members Tom Schulman and Howard Michael Gould are running for vp, and Christopher Keyser and David N. Weiss, who is the current vp, are running for secretary-treasurer.
Additionally, 16 candidates have been nominated for eight open seats on the board of directors. Those include Luvh Rakhe, Linda Burstyn, Mick Betancourt, Jan Oxenberg, Eric Wallace, Jed Weintrob, Chip Johannessen, Andrea King, Steven Schwartz, Jeff Lowell, Billy Ray, Carleton Eastlake and David Wyatt,...

Andie MacDowell, Cary Elwes and Brian Cox have boarded Jonathan Mossek’s upcoming thriller “As Good as Dead,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The trade says Elwes stars as a left-wing extremist who goes on the run after killing the reverend (Cox) behind a white supremacist group. MacDowell portrays the victim’s wife who seeks revenge with the help of two redneck accomplices.

It’s been quite a while since we last saw MacDowell on the big screen. According to IMDb, she recently wrapped filming for Howard Michael Gould’s “The Six Wives of Henry Lefay.”
Elwes most recently starred in “Georgia Rule.” His upcoming projects include Robert Zemeckis’ “A Christmas Carol.” As for Cox, he can be seen in “Trick ‘r Treat,” which will open the 2008 edition of Screamfest.
The trade says Elwes stars as a left-wing extremist who goes on the run after killing the reverend (Cox) behind a white supremacist group. MacDowell portrays the victim’s wife who seeks revenge with the help of two redneck accomplices.

Omega on board Allen's 'Lefay'
LONDON -- Swiss-based sales and financier Omega Entertainment said Thursday that it will co-finance and handle international sales for Howard Michael Gould's directorial debut, "The Six Wives of Henry Lefay".
The Tim Allen starrer also is financed by Ring Prods. and hedge fund Aramid, and produced by Brillstein Entertainment Partners' David McIlvain and Holly Wiersma.
The comedy was packaged by Cassian Elwes of WMA, who is repping the film for U.S. distribution.
It tells the tale of recently deceased Henry Lefay, whose lifelong womanizing has left numerous ex- and current wives fighting over the funeral arrangements.
His long-suffering daughter Barbara (Elisha Cuthbert) is left to clear up the mess after his death. The cast also includes Andie MacDowell, Paz Vega, Jenna Elfma, Lindsay Sloane and S. Epatha Merkerson.
The movie, which Gould also wrote, recently wrapped after a six-week shoot in Connecticut.
Omega Entertainment was formed in 2006 by Markus Barmettler and Enrique Steiger. This year, Peter Rogers, former president of international distribution at Lakeshore Entertainment, was appointed Omega president.
