To anyone in their 20s, Michael Anderson's 1976 sci-fi film "Logan's Run" remains a pop culture fulcrum of anxiety. Based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, "Logan's Run" is set in the distant future of 2274 where the human population has been gathered in high-tech, dome-enclosed living facilities where their every wish is granted by an elaborate computer system. Everyone is young and attractive, and sex partners of any gender identity can be dialed up on a local roulette system.

“Kali bids us to Kill! Kill!” A full review of Indicator’s Hammer Volume 3 Blood and Terror collection will follow, but CineSavant jumps the gun to highlight Terence Fisher’s 1959 mass murder shocker. It adds up to more than exploitative and racist cheap thrills: it’s one of the key films to describe the roots of contemporary terrorism. David Zelag Goodman’s screenplay lets Hammer for once say something relevant about the Colonial past, even if it’s a case of mixed signals — and sex.

Bologna in "My Favorite Year".
By Lee Pfeiffer
Actor and playwright Joseph Bologna has died from cancer at age 82. Bologna and his wife of 52 years, actress/writer Renee Taylor, were nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay they co-wrote (with David Zelag Goodman) for the 1971 comedy "Lovers and Other Strangers". The two collaborated frequently on and off screen. Bologna was noted primarily for his affiliation with comedies. He and Taylor co-wrote 22 plays and also appeared frequently on television but both had successful solo careers as well. His most memorable big screen role was as King Kaiser, the acerbic TV variety show host who was based on Sid Caesar in the hit 1982 comedy "My Favorite Year". Last month, Bologna attended a 35th anniversary screening of the film. His other feature films include "Made for Each Other" (co-written with Taylor), "The Big Bus", "Blame It On Rio", "The Woman in Red" and...

Adrift from civilization, an attractive young couple find themselves threatened, assaulted, and eventually compelled to defend themselves in a bloody showdown. That is the basic premise of Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, released in 1971 and inspired by some of the same movies then crowding the legendary dives of 42nd street. On its surface Straw Dogs is pure exploitation but its lasting power resides in Peckinpah’s transformation of those visceral grindhouse cliches into an appalling examination of human nature.

When the “hardware widow” (Allyn Ann McClerie) asks Monte Walsh (Lee Marvin) if he’d gotten used to the idea of his long-time partner Chet Rollins (Jack Palance) and her being married, Monte says: “I never had so many things to get used to in my whole life, as now.” That line of dialogue in the middle of William Fraker’s “Monte Walsh” (1970) pretty much sums up this first and best film adaptation of Jack Schaeffer’s novel about the end of the Old West in general and the cowboy life in particular. It’s a true classic and even though it features two of the toughest tough guy actors of the sixties and seventies, it’s not a melodramatic shoot-em-up, full of violence, sound and fury. Rather it’s an elegiac portrait of the way it must have really happened, presented in a style as...

Despite it being the directorial debut of five times Oscar nominated cinematographer William A. Fraker, 1970’s revisionist Western Monte Walsh isn’t as well remembered as it possibly should be. Prizing characterization over narrative and ignoring the usual set of genre highlights until its third act, it’s a mellow, melancholy bit of nostalgia about the last days of the Old West. Sporting a handsome cast and imbued with the right touch of technical appropriations, it’s a rather humble offering following on the footsteps of iconic juggernauts of the genre, like True Grit or The Wild Bunch, both of which premiered the year prior. Awards glory and controversial depictions of violence launched those films into the zeitgeist, but Fraker’s has remained an obscure item rooted in realistic, low key tendencies.

Here's another installment featuring Joe Dante's reviews from his stint as a critic for Film Bulletin circa 1969-1974. Our thanks to Video Watchdog and Tim Lucas for his editorial embellishments!
Dustin Hoffman defends his home against murderous thugs in strong, violent melodrama with appeal to both discriminating trades and the blood- and-guts fans. Rating: R.
Director Sam Peckinpah’s fascination with violence as man’s most basic instinct finds new and disturbing expression in Straw Dogs, a difficult, harrowing film which is in essence a long, slow-burning fuse leading to an explosion of bloodshed. On the whole, the ABC Pictures Corp. production possesses a nightmare intensity few horror films could match, and this should be a factor in drawing both serious filmgoers and the mayhem-minded masses. As an action entry, the Cinerama release has the requisite sex and brutality to pull them in, while Dustin Hoffman’s presence an...

Whether you measure your movies by box office, reviews, or popular appeal, Sony’s $125 million remake of the 1990 Ah-nuld Schwarzenegger interplanetary action fest Total Recall looks like a strike-out. The movie opened with a lethal softness; a $25.7 million first weekend meaning Recall won’t even come close to making back its budget during its domestic theatrical run. In fact, despite 22 years of ticket price increases, it’s doubtful the movie will even match the original’s $119.3 million haul.
And for those of you who think maybe the problem is Total Recall was outgunned opening while The Dark Knight Rises was still sucking up box office coin, entertain, at least for a moment if you will, the possibility the movie just plain sucks. According to Rotten Tomatoes’ canvas, almost 70% of reviewers – and over three-quarters of “top critics” – gave Total Recall a thumbs-down. Those who went to see the movie didn’t...

Although it lacks the grit of Sam Peckinpah.s 1971 original and has several problems that hurt the overall story, Straw Dogs is a tense thriller that uses a slow-burn pace to examine how far a good man can be pushed before he pushes back. Based on Gordon Williams' novel The Siege of Trencher's Farm and on the screenplay by David Zelag Goodman and Peckinpah, the remake was directed by Rod Lurie (who also penned the updated screenplay) and stars James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgård, James Woods, Dominic Purcell, Rhys Coiro, Billy Lush, Laz Alonso, Willa Holland, Walton Goggins, Anson Mount, Drew Powell, Kristen Shaw, and Megan Adelle. Forty years ago my main regular writing spot was a weekly page of general commentary on the arts for the New Statesman, and due to the current discussion provoked by Julian Barnes's The Sense of an Ending and the appearance of Rod Lurie's 40th anniversary remake of Straw Dogs, two of the items in the column of 2 December 1971 have a certain topical interest. One is about the third winner of the Booker prize, of which I observed: "Vs Naipaul's In a Free State is a splendid book but is it, as the Booker conditions demand, a full-length novel?"
The other is about a film that had opened the previous week: "I was at the press show for Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs, and rarely have I experienced such a palpable sense of shock and disgust sweep through an audience. Peckinpah is an artist I admire immensely and I wouldn't want to ban his film,...

Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Susan George, Peter Vaughan, Del Henney, David Warner | Written by Sam Peckinpah, David Zelag Goodman | Directed by Sam Peckinpah
I have a confession to make. I had, until slotting the new Blu-ray from Studio Canal into my player, never seen Straw Dogs. I was always an Expose fan, and (unwisely it turns out) thought that Peckinpah’s film would pale in comparison. Plus I’m a stickler for seeing films uncut… And as you may know, the film hasn’t been available uncut in the UK until very recently.
For those that aren’t familiar with the film, it tells the story of quiet American mathematician David Sumner (Hoffman) and his British-born wife Amy (George) who relocate to Amy’s rural English hometown in an attempt to flee the violent social unrest brewing in the Us. However the social unrest of the Us is replaced...

"David Zelag Goodman, a screenwriter best known for such 1970s films as the controversial psychological thriller Straw Dogs and Lovers and Other Strangers, a comedy that earned him an Oscar nomination, has died. He was 81." Dennis McLellan in the Los Angeles Times: "Goodman's other film credits as a co-writer include Monte Walsh, a 1970 western starring Lee Marvin and Eyes of Laura Mars, a 1978 thriller starring Faye Dunaway. He also wrote the screenplays for Farewell, My Lovely, a 1975 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel starring Robert Mitchum as Philip Marlowe; and Logan's Run, the 1976 science-fiction film starring Michael York."
"Goodman's work proved enduring," notes Carmel Dagan in Variety. Monte Walsh "was remade in 2003 as a TNT telepic starring Tom Selleck; Rod Lurie's remake of Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs was released two weeks ago; and a remake of Logan's Run, to star Ryan Gosling, is in the works at Warner Bros.

He was 81. According to his daughter, Goodman died at an assisted-living facility of progressive supranuclear palsy. Goodman shared an Oscar nomination with Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor for co-writing the screenplay for "Lovers and Other Strangers," a 1970 comedy based on the couple's play. His other credits include "Monte Walsh" (1970), a western starring Lee Marvin; "Farewell, My Lovely" (1975), an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel starring Robert Mitchum; Faye Dunaway thriller "Eyes of Laura Mars" (1978); and the sci-fi classic "Logan's Run" (1976). He also wrote episodes of TV's "The Untouchables" in the early 1960s and penned the 1979 miniseries "Freedom Road" starring Kris Kristofferson and Muhammad Ali, in which the boxer played an ex-slave in 1870s Virginia who gets elected to the Senate.

Opens: April 1st 2011
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright
Director: Duncan Jones
Summary: A decorated soldier discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. The experiment is a program that enables him to re-live another man's identity in the last eight minutes of his life which he must do repeatedly to find the truth.
Analysis: Two years ago British filmmaker Duncan Jones delivered his indie debut feature "Moon", a little seen but critically acclaimed sci-fi tale that was essentially Sam Rockwell acting alone or against himself. It was fresh, innovative, somber and overall heralded the arrival of a director to watch out for. After failing to secure funding for his next project, Jones quickly hopped onto the helm of this high-concept action/time travel blockbuster.
Naturally came the calls of Jones being a sell out, after all the...

Citizen Kane and 2001: A Space Odyssey have had more ink spilled over them, but most of the ideas tossed about are on the money and far less is read into them. Also, those two classics have one big thing going for them that Straw Dogs does not. They are great films. Co-written by Peckinpah and David Zelag Goodman from from Gordon Williams' novel...

Frank Perry is at present best remembered, it seems to me, for Mommie Dearest (1981), which really is more of a tombstone than a milestone in his career. This is dreadful shame, since Perry's best work was inventive, sharp, and sensitive, words which might still be applied to the Joan Crawford biopic and shameless ham-fest, but not without considerable moderation.
Man on a Swing (1974) comes out of that historic moment when Joel Grey had just burst upon the world as the Mc in Bob Fosse's film of Cabaret (1972), and some attempt had to be made to exploit his unique talent in subsequent feature films. The man was amazing; he had just won an Oscar; but what could you do with a talent like that? It was a very real problem. Grey had been in films since 1952, but had not been considered as a star before. Even as a character actor his persona was.

What a difference a year makes. In 1976, MGM released a film based on William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s 1967 novel Logan’s Run. Generally lambasted by the press, it may have been a nadir in science fiction films putting studios off the genre until the following May, when 20th Century Fox looked forward with Star Wars.
Warner Home Video has just released Logan’s Run on Blu-ray and it finally gave me a chance to see the movie, something that somehow eluded me back in High School. It has most certainly not aged well and I can see why Roger Ebert called it a "vast, silly extravaganza", which changed the novel in some ways for the better but failed to visually interest us in the society.
In the film, directed by Michael Anderson, the biggest change was in the location of society: domed and hermetically sealed as compared...

True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard, who at one point was in the running for Thor, and Kate Bosworth have joined the cast of Screen Gems’ Straw Dogs, a reimagining of the controversial 1971 Sam Peckinpah film. The two join the previously cast James Marsden. Rod Lurie (Nothing But the Truth, The Contender) wrote the script and is directing the film, which centers on a Hollywood screenwriter (Marsden) who relocates with his wife to her hometown in Mississippi. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, leading to a violent confrontation. Bosworth plays the wife, who left the South for La. to become an actress and returns home so her husband can finish his script in quiet. Skarsgard plays her high school boyfriend, an ex-football hero who sees the return of his former girlfriend as a way to reclaim glory. The original, which Peckinpah co-wrote with David Zelag Goodman,...

Screen Gems’ previously announced remake of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah-directed thriller Straw Dogs is one step closer to the screen. The studio has signed on James Marsden (X-Men) to star in the film, which is being directed by Rod Lurie (Nothing But the Truth, The Last Castle). The new Straw Dogs follows Los Angeles screenwriter David Sumner (Marsden), who moves with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, leading to a violent confrontation. TV vet Reed Steiner (NCIS, The Shield, Nash Bridges) penned the screenplay. The original, which Peckinpah co-wrote with David Zelag Goodman, saw Dustin Hoffman in the role of Sumner, with the story set in rural England. It also starred Susan George and received critical acclaim, but also received much controversy, particularly for a brutal rape scene. Both films are based on...

During the S. Darko panel at our West Coast Weekend of Horrors convention late yesterday, director Chris Fisher revealed that his next project is also the latest in the long line of '70s genre remakes. He has completed the first draft of a new version of the 1978 psychothriller Eyes Of Laura Mars, and hopes to go into production in late summer or early fall.
Originally penned by John Carpenter and rewritten (heavily, according to Carpenter) by David Zelag Goodman, and directed by a pre-The Empire Strikes Back Irvin Kershner, Eyes starred Faye Dunaway as a woman who witnesses the crimes of a serial killer from the villain's own point of view. Fisher described his approach to the redux as akin to Videodrome, and jokingly offered the lead to S. Darko co-star Briana Evigan (provided she'd do the required nudity). A studio wasn't mentioned, but presumably it's for Columbia,...
