The elusive motives behind Mark David Chapman fatally shooting John Lennon are now finally being explained in a boundary-breaking Apple TV+ docuseries.
“John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial” interrogates why Chapman, a photographer from Hawaii, set out to murder Beatle Lennon. A witness to Lennon’s murder, taxi driver Richard Peterson, and Jay Hastings, a doorman at The Dakota who heard Lennon’s last words before he was shot outside of the infamous building, also speculate what compelled Chapman to kill.
Lennon and wife Yoko Ono’s shared confidante Elliot Mintz is further interviewed as the docuseries questions whether Chapman had religious motives or was part of a larger conspiracy to kill celebrities.

There was a time when Fremantle was shorthand for the American Idol company. ABC’s iconic entertainment brand was undoubtedly a coveted calling card, but it also served to constrain perceptions of a company that harbored a grander vision.
Peter Bose, the preeminent Danish drama producer behind shows including Wallander, knows this better than most. He recalls a conversation he had with CAA in 2013 after telling his agent he wanted to sell his company, Miso Films, to Fremantle.
“Fremantle? Who is Fremantle within scripted?” came the reply. “We couldn’t actually argue, you know,” Bose remembers. A decade on, the acquisition of Miso was a brick in the foundations of Fremantle delivering more than 100 dramas last year.
Fremantle is now firmly established in the scripted game. It was the company that transformed Sir Kenneth Branagh into Boris Johnson for This England. Its Nordic noir hit Face to Face, made by Miso,...

Fremantle has acquired a majority stake in David Glover and Mark Raphael’s factual powerhouse 72 Films, the producers behind “9/11: One Day in America,” “The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty” and “All or Nothing: Arsenal.”
The deal is the latest in a string of acquisitions for the Bertelsmann and Rtl Group-owned Fremantle, which has been expanding aggressively in scripted in the last year. The acquisition of 72 Films is a major coup in the non-scripted arena for the company considering the production company’s excellent track record of documentary hits.
Under the deal, Fremantle says it will provide 72 Films with its “global infrastructure, distribution, and specialist support” across the 27 territories in which it operates. The deal “reaffirms Fremantle’s commitment and ambition to grow its global documentaries proposition working with the very best filmmaking talent,” said the company, which has been pushing into premium documentary in recent years.
The deal was spearheaded by Fremantle U.

The world of James Bond is hitting the streaming world a lot sooner than you’d think.
Amazon’s Prime Video has greenlit its first TV show based on the iconic British spy with “007’s Road to a Million,” a Bond-style spin on a race around the world.
The eight-part series will be produced by Britain’s 72 Films and Bond guardians and producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, along with MGM Television.
Sources tell Variety that the project has been in the works at Prime Video for around four years, long before the MGM deal was finalized, and it sits separately to any shows that are yet to come out of the pact. The e-commerce giant closed its $8.5 billion deal for MGM last week, with the James Bond franchise believed to be a powerful driving force behind the acquisition.

There’s always somebody new in the rat race trenches whose motto is ‘how to make friends and deceive people.’ Howard Duff’s photographer uses his camera to extort money from criminals while polishing his image as a grabber of Pulitzer-worthy news photos. But how long can he maintain his charade with mobsters Brian Donlevy and Lawrence Tierney, and how soon will his kissing partners Peggy Dow and Anne Vernon see through his lies? This efficient noir was the first feature directing job from the prolific Joe Pevney.

We loved James Bond but diehard ’60s spy fans hold a special admiration for Len Deighton’s ‘thinking man’s secret agent’ Harry Palmer. Viavision pulls off a slick trick by assembling the three top Michael Caine Harry Palmer pictures, each from a different studio, in a single deluxe gift box. Harry fights the Brain Drain, encounters criss-crossing conspiracies at the Berlin Wall, and witnesses a privatized invasion of the U.S.S.R., in The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain, three great pictures by three very different directors. The presentations come with a glut of special edition extras.

Twenty years after the tragic events of 9/11, it’s hard to imagine anyone doesn’t have the images of the Twin Towers, whether on fire or collapsing, permanently etched in their brains.
But there were other events of the day — from the crash at the Pentagon, to the hole United Airlines Flight 93 created in a field in Somerset County, Penn., to individual stories of escape and survival and bravery — that may have receded to the backs of memories. And for Gen Z, those stories are just stories — not memories at all.
The filmmakers behind “9/11: One Day in America,” a new six-part docuseries that premiered at Tribeca Film Festival but is launching just ahead of the milestone anniversary (on Aug. 29) on National Geographic, knew they therefore had to be “unflinching but respectful,” as producer Caroline Marsden puts it, in the archival footage they selected to include, as well as the...

Someone’s racist past has finally caught up to him.
It was reported by the LA Times that the new owners of Hollywood & Highland, Djm and Gaw Capital Partners, are dismantling a pair of white elephants at the center in a move to cleanse itself from the racist legacy of D.W. Griffith.
The elephants, which are an homage to a set from Griffith’s 1916 film Intolerance, are being removed as part of a larger set of redesigns by the company to better cater a newer, younger audience. Architect and head of redesign David Glover of Gensler said the center needs to “pivot and transform away from being a hub of transaction to a hub of culture.”
Griffith, son of a Confederate army colonel, was a film director most well-known for 1915’s Birth of a Nation and Intolerance, the former valorizing the pursuits of the Ku Klux Klan with the latter...

It’s finally back on Blu in Region 1, the ‘sixties spy movie beloved by enthusiasts that yearned for something a bit more substantial & nutritious than James Bond. This first Harry Palmer adventure seems even more perfect than when it was thanks to a great espionage recipe and quality ingredients. Michael Caine is sensational as the anti-007, the feel of London streets is intoxicating, and John Barry’s music score is beyond praise. Are Sidney Furie’s directorial mannerisms too show-offy, too fussy? I only raise the question to defend him.

The BBC has ordered “A Tabloid Empire,” a three-part documentary series on Rupert Murdoch’s influence over the British press.
The series will air on BBC Two in the U.K. and examine in detail Britain’s popular press between 1997 and 2012, a period that covers phone hacking and corruption but that also saw Murdoch’s and other papers wielding great influence over politics and society in general.
“House of Assad” producer 72 Films will make the series, which will use archives from the period as well as interviews with key figures from the time. The BBC promised that the series will document “the colorful characters and unrivaled power of those at the top, forensically deconstructing some of the most iconic and infamous moments of modern times.”
Despite closing down the weekly News of the World as a result of the phone-hacking scandal, Murdoch still owns The Times and The Sun in Britain.

Channel 4 has announced a one-off documentary about Britain's struggles with discussing race and diversity issues.
Things We Won't Say About Race (That Are True) is written and presented by campaigner Trevor Phillips, who has worked for 30 years at reducing discrimination and improving equality.
The programme will see Phillips speaking to Ukip leader Nigel Farage about whether attempts to adopt a multi-ethnic Britain was the direct cause for the creation of his political party.
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair will also speak about how New Labour supported diversity and equality, and how his party's work could continue.
Trevor Phillips said: "The dividing lines of race, religion and culture are probably the most dangerous flashpoints in Britain today - but they're also the ones we find hardest to talk about in public.
"This film points to ways in which we can say what's on our minds without being accused of being bigots.

Channel 4 has attempted to sequence the DNA of famous figures including Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe in new show Dead Famous DNA.
The new three-part series - which has taken three years to make - sees presenter Mark Evans trying to find body parts and human relics from historical figures such as Adolf Hitler, Charles Darwin, John F Kennedy, Napoleon, Marlon Brando and King George III in an attempt to learn more about them from their DNA.
As well as trying to find out whether the relics they acquire are genuine, Evans and his team of scientists will try to see if the DNA reveals any clues about the people involved.
After paying $2,000 for samples of Presley's hair from his barber, the scientists found that Presley had genetic variants for migraines, obesity and glaucoma - as well as a variant known to cause a heart muscle disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Gogglebox has landed a primetime slot on Channel 4.
The surprise hit - which captures members of the public as they watch the week's television - will now air on Fridays at 9pm.
Fan favourites such as Leon and June, Steph and Dom, and Sandra and Sandy will all return along with two new Gogglebox additions, Kingston University students Josh and Joe and the Birmingham-based Carr family - Verona, Nate and Grandma Ann.
The first episode is expected to see the Gogglebox stars chewing over the Oscars, The Voice, The Taste and Saturday Night Takeaway.
"We make each episode from scratch every week, never knowing what we are going to get," Channel 4's head of specialist factual David Glover said. "I love the fact that it's so funny, and I love that the show feels warm, but maybe most of all I love the fact it feels like a little bit of truth.
