Carl Davis, who composed the scores for The French Lieutenant’s Woman, the BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice and perhaps most famously Abel Gance’s epic 1927 silent film Napoléon, has died. He was 86.
Davis died Thursday after suffering a brain hemorrhage, his family announced.
“We are so proud that Carl’s legacy will be his astonishing impact on music,” they wrote on Twitter. “A consummate all-round musician, he was the driving force behind the reinvention of the silent movie for this generation, and he wrote scores for some of the most-loved and remembered British television dramas.”
Born in Brooklyn but living in the U.K. since 1961, Davis was hired by documentarians Kevin Brownlow and David Gill to create music for the 13-hour 1980 miniseries Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film and for Napoléon.
“My first score for a silent movie was Napoleon,” he said in 2010. “Five hours of it! It...

After penning a thoughtful letter about mental health to fellow dads in honor of Father's Day, Prince William attended a soccer match between England and Slovakia in France on Monday afternoon. Clad in a sharp blue suit, the father of two - who turns 34 years old on Tuesday – showed his team spirit from the stands, where he was joined by the chairman of the Football Association, Greg Dyke, and British football executive David Gill. Unfortunately for us, William's adorable children, Princess Charlotte and Prince George, did not make an appearance, though they did steal the show at the Trooping the Colour parade earlier this month. Take a look at the best pictures of the British royals in 2016 - so far!

Ramon Novarro: 'Ben-Hur' 1925 star. 'Ben-Hur' on TCM: Ramon Novarro in most satisfying version of the semi-biblical epic Christmas 2015 is just around the corner. That's surely the reason Turner Classic Movies presented Fred Niblo's Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ last night, Dec. 20, '15, featuring Carl Davis' magnificent score. Starring Ramon Novarro, the 1925 version of Ben-Hur became not only the most expensive movie production,[1] but also the biggest worldwide box office hit up to that time.[2] Equally important, that was probably the first instance when the international market came to the rescue of a Hollywood mega-production,[3] saving not only Ben-Hur from a fate worse than getting trampled by a runaway chariot, but also the newly formed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which could have been financially strangled at birth had the epic based on Gen. Lew Wallace's bestseller been a commercial bomb. The convoluted making of 'Ben-Hur,' as described...

With David Moyes’ sacking from Manchester United now officially confirmed, his reign will be looked back upon as ten of the darkest months in the history of the Premier League’s most successful team. Unable to finish any higher than sixth and therefore certain to miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time since 1995, United have looked discordant and mentally frail ever since the Scotsman took over.
While results under Moyes have too often been stuck somewhere on the spectrum between disappointing and dismal, there are certainly arguments to be made that shifting the blame entirely onto his shoulders would be to ignore bigger problems at the club both present and at the time of his appointment. Succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in the history of British football, was always going to be a challenge of near-insurmountable magnitude...

A few years ago it seemed that TV was helping to revive a public interest in early cinema by broadcasting classic pre-talkies and backing the cinematic presentation of restored silent movies accompanied by live orchestras. Sadly this trend has been largely discontinued despite the success of Michel Hazanavicius's The Artist and Martin Scorsese's Hugo. The peak of that great silent revival was Kevin Brownlow's restoration of Abel Gance's Napoleon, but other major successes include this handsome version of the 1925 Phantom of the Opera with a new score by Carl Davis that Brownlow, David Gill and Patrick Stanbury's Photoplay Productions put on in 1998.
Its conventional hero and heroine are rather dull, but Lon Chaney's Phantom, the mad, disfigured, lovelorn musician manipulating the world from the cellars and dungeons beneath the Opera House in fin-de-siècle Paris,...

Everyone has their own opinion on why it has gone so wrong for Manchester United over the past couple of months.
Some point to the devastating upheaval caused by the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, a man who has almost single-handedly been responsible for all of the club’s successes over the last quarter of a century.
Others pinpoint the departure of chief executive David Gill, in tandem with this, as being too much change, too soon.
Then there’s David Moyes, Ferguson’s chosen successor, handpicked by the man himself, yet who has yet to win over certain sections of the Old Trafford support.
A man, some argue, who has no business being as a club like United, due to his lack of top-level experience in football management.

“Transition”. That has been the word used by most pundits to explain Manchester United’s disastrous slump in form this season.
Following the retirement of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this year, there was always going to be a period of change at the club, but you could be for forgiven for thinking it’s been more “upheaval” than “transition” since.
Not only has Ferguson gone, but so too has chief executive David Gill, assistant manager Mike Phelan, goalkeeping coach Eric Steele and all the rest of the old backroom staff that has helped deliver success down the years.
And this has hindered David Moyes, who replaced the irreplaceable Ferguson in July, and has had a truly torrid time of things ever since.

The start to the season has been one of worry for fans of Manchester United and one of relief and delight for fans of their rivals.
The team are currently 8 points worse off when compared to the same 7 fixtures from last season with Crystal Palace being omitted due to playing in the Championship last season.
They currently sit in 8th place with Arsenal, who sit top of the table, 8 points ahead of them and pundits and United fans have been voicing their doubts over Moyes being the right man to take over from the football management god known as Sir Alex Ferguson.
But I believe that Moyes is the right man and that what United need right now is patience.
Sir Alex Ferguson did not exactly end with a great squad at his disposal and despite winning the league; they looked distinctly average throughout the season.

Transfer window deadline day. For Manchester United fans, it promised so much and delivered so little.
“Silly season” is over again for another four months and the dust has settled following a crazy 24 hours that saw Premier League clubs set new spending records.
In total, £140 million was spent on deadline day in England, and United’s outlay on players accounted for only £27.5 million of that.
By contrast, Arsenal spent £42.4 million on Mesut Ozil, while the Red Devils were completely blown out of the water in fiscal terms earlier in the window as Tottenham spent over £100 million Manchester City £90 million and Chelsea £66 million.
That really puts into perspective just how disappointing United’s summer has been as the champions were left behind by their main title competitors.
While City have signed Alvaro Negredo, Stevan Jovetic, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Martin Demichelis, the Red Devils signed Guillermo Varela and Marouane Fellaini.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has enquired into the availability of Southampton left-back Luke Shaw as a possible alternative to Leighton Baines, according to the Express.
The highly-rated 18-year-old is considered one of England’s best prospects and is on Moyes’s radar following the Scot’s frustrations in landing Everton defender Baines.
United have now had two bids knocked back for the Toffees star, after a bid of £28 million for the 28-year-old and his colleague Marouane Fellaini was dismissed earlier this week as “derisory and insulting” by the Goodison Park outfit.
The champions are expected to improve on their offer and come back with £35 million but with Everton showing no signs that they are willing to sell Baines this summer, Moyes has alternatives.

A new era is dawning on Manchester United this summer.
For the first time in over quarter of a century, a new manager is at the helm following the retirement of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
And his successor, David Moyes, has wasted no time in stamping his own unique mark on the club, by bringing in a number of his old backroom staff at Everton and replacing those loyal to Ferguson.
No.2 Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele have been replaced by Steve Round and Chris Woods, respectively, while chief executive David Gill has gone with Ed Woodward being named as his successor.
Moyes has demonstrated that he is not afraid to wield the axe if he feels changes are neccessary, just as Ferguson did.
If the famous, maybe infamous Scot thought your time was up at the club, then your time was up at the club.

Ramon Novarro in one of the best silent movies: ‘The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg’ (photo: Ramon Novarro leapfrog) (See previous post: "Ramon Novarro Ben-Hur: First Big-Budget Hollywood Movie Saved by the International Market.") Ben-Hur also solidified Ramon Novarro’s international superstardom. In fact, moviegoers outside North America helped to keep Novarro working steadily at MGM up to the mid-’30s, several years after his domestic popularity had markedly diminished — and several years after fellow male silent era stars John Gilbert and William Haines had been gone from the studio. With the passing of the decades, especially since the release of William Wyler’s multiple Oscar-winning 1959 version of Ben-Hur, starring Charlton Heston, Ramon Novarro’s 1925 movie fell into oblivion. The following is from Beyond Paradise: The Life of Ramon Novarro: As the years passed, Ben-Hur, the motion picture that would “remain, as the Bible remains” became but...

Manchester United have reportedly tabled a £60 milllion bid for Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale, according to the Huffington Post.
Despite putting in bids for Everton’s Leighton Baines and Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas, United are yet to strengthen their squad under the reign of new manager David Moyes.
However, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has flown back to England four days ahead of schedule and the Premier League champions have now made a firm offer for the double Pfa Player of the Year winner.
United have a long-standing interest in Bale and almost signed him during his Southampton days in 2007, but the Welsh international opted for a move to White Hart Lane instead, concerned that he would struggle for appearances at Old Trafford.
Regarded as a left-back at the time, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs were established on the left-wing while Nani had just arrived from Sporting Lisbon, and so Bale felt...

New Manchester United manager David Moyes will deliver his first official press conference this afternoon.
The 50-year-old former Everton boss is expected to address a number of issues, such as a potential deal for Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, the appointment of Ryan Giggs as player-coach as well as the long-term future of striker Wayne Rooney.
Rooney has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford ever since former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson omitted him from the club’s final two Premier League games last season, amid claims the 27-year-old had handed in a second transfer request in three years.
The England international was booed by a section of supporters as he collected his winner’s medal after United’s final league game at Old Trafford and was also jeered during the club’s open top bus parade through Manchester the following week.

Manchester United manager David Moyes is expected to announce that Wayne Rooney will be staying at Old Trafford at his first official press conference later today, according to the Express.
Moyes and the club’s new chief executive Ed Woodward, who is taking over that position from David Gill, are understood to have held “clear the air talks” with Rooney and his representative Paul Stretford, and have accepted that the England international did not ask for a transfer request in a meeting with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in April.
The Premier League champions have always maintained that the striker is not for sale, despite interest from domestic rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.
However, Rooney is keen for them to make it known to supporters that he did not put in a second transfer request in three years, as had been reported, so that he may avoid a backlash from fans next season.

The 29-year-old Dutch international sensation and current Arsenal captain arrived at London St Pancras train station on Thursday morning to make the journey north to Manchester to complete his medical and the formalities of the sensational move to Old Trafford, including the agreement of personal terms.

Forbes magazine recently stated that the biggest sports franchise in the world was Manchester United. The American business magazine said that the 19 times champions of England were worth a whopping $1.84 billion, over $500 million more than the next best football team on the list (Real Madrid at $1.3 billion).
A recent survey commissioned by United said that they had 659 million registered followers world wide, almost one tenth of the global population. These are tremendous numbers for a team that has a legitimate claim to being the biggest in the world.
Their shirt deal with Aon Plc runs out at the end of next season and is worth about $31 million (£20 million) a season. Not wasting any time United have announced a new deal. From the start of the 2014-2015 season Gm will pay United somewhere in the region of $60 – $70 million (£38 – £45 million) over seven years plus a one off payment of $100 million (£64 million) as an activation fee.

It has been one of the longest projected transfers of the summer but Manchester United are finally ready to offer £10 million for Everton and England left-back Leighton Baines.

Although United’s bid will actually come in £5 million under Everton’s £15 million valuation, the offer is expected to be a final one from the Old Trafford board and because of Everton’s financial woes, Sir. Alex Ferguson is confident of landing his man.

Manchester United and Barcelona will face each other yet again in pre-season this year, with both clubs looking to prove a point before the start of the new campaign. The two clubs have agreed to the friendly match which will take place on August 8th in Gothenburg, Sweden and the match will no doubt showcase the new signings for both teams.
Manchester United and Barcelona have met several times in the last few years, including in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals, as well as a semi-final in 2008.
With players from both clubs having played in their Euros, much of the squad will be resting over July although when August the 8th comes around both teams will hope all players are fit and ready to start the clubs pre-season campaigns. Although Manchester United may miss out on Ryan Giggs and David De Gea who are both players scheduled for the Olympic games.

Imagine my surprise, on perusing last week’s Sunday Times, to discover that none other than the great Kevin Brownlow, Mr. Silent Cinema himself, was scheduled to appear, if not “at a cinema near you”, then at least at a rambling country estate not a million miles from me. For anyone with even a sliver of interest in the history of cinema, Brownlow is a positively Olympian figure, the man who, trusty two-reel tape recorder in hand, assiduously stalked the retirement homes of the Hollywood Hills to capture the last flickering memories of a time when the movies moved, later collected in his classic 1968 book, The Parade’s Gone By . . . The man who, together with his collaborator, the late David Gill, rescued and restored such great films as Rex Ingram’s The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse...
