The opening credits of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" establish what kind of a show audiences can expect. Most classic Trek shows feature a bold, adventurous orchestral fanfare paired with gorgeous shots of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Deep Space Nine, or the U.S.S. Voyager inspirationally trekking through vast and awe-inspiring spatial phenomena. Star trekking, if you will. "Lower Decks" features a similar Jerry Goldsmith-inspired piece (composed by Chris Westlake), and depicts similarly inspiring spatial scenes of the U.S.S. Cerritos boldly encountering vast and dangerous situations. In a humorous twist, however, the Cerritos doesn't fare well in said encounters. It looks out over an ineffably large black hole ... and then is sucked in. It soars over a rocky heavenly body of some kind, only to clip its engine against an outcropping and begin to crash. It bravely faces a battle between several Borg craft and a fleet of Romulan vessels,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on Eddie Volkman Show with Hannah B on Star 96.7 Wssr-fm reviewing the new Blu-Ray edition of “Harold and Maude,” the cult classic featuring Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort in the ultimate May/December lesson about freedom, passion and love.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
”Harold and Maude” was released over 50 years ago in 1971, and it was directed by Hal Ashby – his second film as director after a Oscar-winning career as an editor – and featured Bud Cort as Harold and Ruth Gordon as Maude. 20-year-old Harold is obsessed with death, after rejecting his life of privilege and his detached mother (Vivian Pickles). Enter Maude, a free-spirited 79-year-old fellow traveler who like Harold likes to attend funerals. They developa friendship, and eventual romantic relationship, and it is Maude who teaches Harold about the importance of living life to its fullest. H and M also features a classic soundtrack from 1970s troubadour Yusuf “Cat” Stevens.

Philip Baker Hall, the journeyman character actor who was a favorite of director Paul Thomas Anderson but surely is best remembered for bringing library investigator Lt. Bookman to life on a 1991 episode of Seinfeld, has died. He was 90.
Hall died Sunday night, Los Angeles Times sportswriter Sam Farmer, his friend and neighbor, announced. No other details of his death were immediately available.
With his hangdog face and world-weary eyes, Hall looked as if he had seen it all and was using that knowledge to go forward. The everyman actor racked up more than 100 television appearances during his five-decade career, and one of his more endearing characters of late was Walt Kleezak, the cantankerous neighbor who befriends the young Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould) on Modern Family.

It was the original cult film. A movie you had to show your girlfriend or boyfriend so they understood you. And it was the comedy Variety called “as much fun as a burning orphanage.”
Making “Harold and Maude” wasn’t easy, and releasing it to the general public was even harder. But 50 years on, the touching, droll and subversive story of a troubled teenager, played by Bud Cort, who falls in love with a nearly 80-year old free spirit, played by Ruth Gordon, still feels fresh and funny.
The idea for the film was hatched by Colin Higgins, a UCLA film student who lucked into a job cleaning the pool of a producer and ended up selling his script to Paramount. Director Hal Ashby fought the establishment at every turn, nearly getting the production shut down. Released with almost no marketing on the same date “The Godfather” was supposed to premiere,...

“Room 104” comes to an end this week after a four-year run unlike any other in TV history. Its anthology framework wasn’t new, its roster of writers and directors included plenty of experienced TV vets, and many of these episodes had foundations in genres that have been on screens for decades.
Over 48 episodes, what this show did have was Room 104 itself, a drab four-wall set — and a blank canvas for anyone lucky enough to get the chance to play inside. Whether the storytellers that came through used that vague premise as an experiment, a challenge, or a chance to tell a story that could only exist within those confines, each new chapter was worth watching to see which path it took.
In fact, even though we’ve explained why we picked the 10 episodes below as some of the show’s best, it’s almost worth going in without...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Things” Season 4, Episode 10, “Listen to the Roosters.”]
Ghosts are walking among us, and they’re feeling very, very good.
One ghost in particular gets a temporary spotlight in the “Better Things” Season 4 finale (now available on Hulu), as a gray-haired woman in a yellow dress (played by Ellen Geer) shares a bit of foresight with Duke (Olivia Edward), the Fox family medium. Duke regularly connects with spirits, whether it’s the recurring presence of her grandfather in Season 3 or during the otherworldly Season 2 episode, “White Rock,” so it’s not all that surprising when her new friend up and vanishes via an apparitional Irish goodbye.
But before she leaves, this ghost offers a key bit of advice. Claiming she can see the future, Duke (in a moment of prescience) first asks if there is a future (there is), before saying, “I never want to get married or have kids...

Even though Ziva's gone, she's still haunting the team.
Fortunately, that didn't stop Gibbs and company from finding the murderer of an ex-Marine on NCIS Season 17 Episode 3.
In the continuing effort to find a legitimate role for Jack on the squad, she ended up informally interviewing everyone about how they felt about Ziva's visit, under orders from Vance.
Following their stoic boss's lead, McGee, Bishop, and Torres didn't offer up much about their feelings. They don't need no stinkin' feelings.
Instead, logically, they were more concerned about how their teammates were handling Ziva's resurrection and drama from NCIS Season 17 Episode 1 and NCIS Season 17 Episode 2.
It was amusing how each saw the others suffering from fallout.
McGee correctly pointed out that Ziva was an NCIS rock star and Bishop had the misfortune of having to work in Ziva's shadow.

"You have to save yourself, I can't do this for you." Orion Classics has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Unlovable, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. The indie comedy is about a sex and love addicted woman who becomes friends with a reclusive man who lives nearby. As one of the quotes in this trailer states, it's not so much a film about love, rather a "feel-good film about the power of friendship." Charlene deGuzman (from "Big Time Rush" now making her feature film debut) stars as Joy, with a stellar ensemble cast including John Hawkes, Melissa Leo, Paul James, with Ellen Geer and Jake McDorman. This looks like an honest, heartfelt film that doesn't try to say love will fix everything - which is really refreshing considering that's what most romance films are about. Enjoy. Here's the official trailer...

Within the first five minutes of Suzi Yoonessi’s unexpectedly charming sex addiction dramedy “Unlovable,” the film’s endearing leading lady attempts to kill herself. Joy (Charlene deGuzman, who also co-wrote the film’s script) doles out the niceties, introducing herself, indulging the audience in some of her favorite pastimes, confessing to having a “gaping hole in her soul,” all before penning a suicide note that puts it pretty succinctly: “She died doing what she loved: wanting to Die.” Of course, she doesn’t die (where’s the movie in that?). Instead, she pukes up a candy-colored mix of cough medicine and cake, the worldview of “Unlovable” in a gloppy nutshell.
Joy is a love and sex addict who is often driven to drink when things aren’t turning out her way, and once she starts drinking, she’s prone to indulging her other bad habits. Soon, she’ll lose everything — her job,...

Jay and Mark Duplass are creators who don’t like to be put in a box, even if they’re making six hours of television set within the same four walls.
“Room 104,” the new HBO anthology series from the Duplass brothers, tells individual, episodic stories in each of its 12 half-hour installments, and all 12 are set within the same cheap, dingy hotel room. The first episode, which premiered at the Atx TV Festival Saturday evening, is a lot closer to Mark Duplass’ work in indie films “Creep” and “The One I Love” than the brothers’ former HBO comedy.
During a panel discussion following the episode, Duplass said he felt inspired by the constraints of the premise.
“I have something like 218 ideas in a Word document on my computer,” Duplass said.
Noting how it felt like he was back making low-budget indie films, Duplass said he wrote seven of the 12 episodes...

Harold (Cort) is young, rich, depressed, lonely and obsessed with death. His idea of fun is visiting funerals and pretending to commit suicide in a variety of gruesome and violent ways in front of his controlling mother. One day at a funeral he meets Maude (Gordon), a fun and rebellious seventy-nine year-old who loves life and every thing to do with it. As their friendship grows, Maude teaches Harold how to live life to the full with a smile on your face, how to love and to not worry so much about the little things.
Filmed in 1971, Harold and Maude is coming to Blu-ray this year as part of the Masters of Cinema series. This irreverent and dark comedy is a strange tale of loving life to the fullest.

“Bloody Birthday” certainly offers a fun early 80s movie for slasher enthusiasts. The twist this time around is there is no Jason Voorhees or Michael Michaels but 10 year old kids! It was certainly up my ally as I like slasher movies that try something different aside from the typical formula used in these movies.
The plot is three-ten-year old kids begin a mass killing spree due to in part to the fact that they were born during an eclipse,...

Will Geers' Theatricum Botanicum, the idyllic setting of the four-day California festival, began life as a refuge for actors who were persecuted in the name of anti-communism
The audience arriving for the opening night of the 8th Topanga film festival at the Theatricum Botanicum are greeted by a veritable wooded wonderland. Think Sundance in the Shire, with drinks in front of the Hamlet Hut, a dusty brook and musicians strumming acoustic guitars under giant oak trees.
A trio of belly dancers perform on the wooden stage of the majestic open-air auditorium before the first night screening of Kyle Ruddick's One Day on Earth, while the half moon throws out a glowing silvery light.
"It's beautiful here, just perfect," says festival director Urs Baur, to a cheering crowd, who in deference to the festival's wolf logo, collectively howl at the moon.

Harold And Maude (Criterion) Hal Ashby’s masterpiece of black humor centers on a wealthy young man (Bud Cort) who’s obsessed with death and the septuagenarian (Ruth Gordon) with whom he finds true love. As unabashedly romantic as it is quirky, with Cat Stevens supplying one of the great film scores of all-time. Fine support from Vivian Pickles, Cyril Cusack, Charles Tyner, and Ellen Geer. Fine screenplay by Colin Higgins. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Hal Ashby biographer Nick Dawson, producer Charles Mulvehill; Illustrated audio excerpts from seminars by Ashby and Higgins; Interview with Cat Stevens. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.
In Darkness (Sony) Agnieszka Holland’s Ww II epic tells the true story of a sewer worker and petty thief in Nazi-occupied Poland who single-handedly helped hide a group of Jews in the city’s labyrinthine sewer system for the duration of the war.

Sooner or later our favorite TV shows all come to an end and the cast and crew all go their separate ways. If we're lucky, our favorite performers return in new shows and movies. Here's where you'll be able to see some of them.
Sasha Alexander (Dawson's Creek) is currently working on Tenure, an indie film that stars Luke Wilson (That '70s Show), David Koechner (Still Standing), and Michael Cudlitz (Standoff). The movie's a comedy and centers around a college professor who competes for tenure with a hot-shot female colleague.
Michelle C. Bonilla (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman) is booked to film Montana Amazon. The film stars Olympia Dukakis (Center of the Universe) and Haley Joel Osment (Murphy Brown), and features veterans like Veronica Cartwright (Leave It to Beaver, L.A. Law) and Ellen Geer (Falcon Crest).
If you're in the New York City area, you can see Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers) perform a one-woman show at Feinstein's.
