David Gilmour has unveiled “The Piper’s Call,” the first track from his upcoming album, Luck and Strange.
“The Piper’s Call” is one of eight new songs composed by Gilmour for the album, with lyrics penned by his wife, Poly Samson. The album was produced by Charlie Andrew, and recorded with a group of contributing musicians that included Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass; Adam Betts, Steve Gadd, and Steve Distanislao on drums; Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards; and string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner.
Samson said the the album was “written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant,” and the first track finds Gilmour singing about “the promise of eternal youth.” There’s also a lyric about “steer[ing] clear of the snakes,” as well as a pretty great guitar solo from the former Pink Floyd member. Take a listen below.

St. Vincent delivered a faithful rendition of David Bowie’s “Young Americans” as part of Thursday’s Love Rocks NYC benefit, an all-star concert staged at New York’s Beacon Theater to benefit God’s Love We Deliver.
Backed by a massive band that included backup singers and a horn section, Annie Clark echoed blue-eyed soul-era Bowie, working the crowd and singing with a very Thin White Duke inflection.
St. Vincent’s appearance came one night after she covered Portishead’s “Glory Box” alongside the Roots on The Tonight Show.

Celebrated Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez has released a new lyric video for his cover of Eric Clapton’s 1998 song “My Father’s Eyes,” which features Clapton himself.
Martinez’s version transforms the slick, blues-pop tune into a rollicking, uptempo song packed with plenty of drums, horns, piano and classic Clapton guitar lines. Think of Greg Fox as an avant-garde Steve Gadd. Whereas Gadd specializes in bringing immaculate grooves with him wherever he goes, Fox — a thirty-something New York drummer renowned for his fierce yet supple attack— is the guy you call if you’re looking to infuse your band with a kind of ecstatic electricity. Drawing on influences from Lightning Bolt basher Brian Chippendale to free-jazz mystic Milford Graves, he’s brought that sensation to his work with arty black-metal band Liturgy, instrumental psych purveyors Ex Eye, shapeshifting experimental outfit Zs, and...

Paul Simon adds lush orchestral layers to “Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War” in a new version of the 1983 track. New York chamber ensemble yMusic offers textural elegance to the rerecorded take, which appears on the singer-songwriter’s upcoming 14th LP, In the Blue Light.

Paul Simon offers a widescreen glow to “One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor” in his new re-recorded version of the track, which originally appeared on his 1973 LP, There Goes Rhymin’ Simon.
The slowed-down, simmering track opens with chiming piano, brushed drums and finger snaps before settling into its familiar blues shuffle. Simon embellishes the arrangement with horns, psychedelic tremolo guitar, snaking tambourines and snares.
The song is available as a free download with pre-orders of Simon’s upcoming 14th LP, In the Blue Light, out September 7th.

To coincide with the final dates of his farewell tour, Paul Simon will release his 14th solo studio album — called “In the Blue Light” — on September 7, Legacy Recordings announced today. The album features new versions, or, as the announcement says, “fresh perspectives on 10 of the artist’s favorite (though perhaps less-familiar) songs” from across Simon’s solo career.
“This album consists of songs that I thought were almost right, or were odd enough to be overlooked the first time around,” Simon said in a statement. “Re-doing arrangements, harmonic structures, and lyrics that didn’t make their meaning clear, gave me time to clarify in my own head what I wanted to say, or realize what I was thinking and make it more easily understood.”

James Taylor is Martha’s Vineyard in the 1970s, campfire circles in the New England woods and sun-drenched barbecues in western Massachusetts. He’s Boston’s Fenway Park and preppy college frat parties in the 1980s and acoustic guitar by the Charles River on muggy summer nights. And today, Taylor, American folk-rock hero with over 100 million records sold worldwide and five Grammys to his name, remains, at age 70, one of the most impactful singer-songwriters in the American music canon, a wistful and winsome troubadour with sweeping cross-generational influence. Just ask any of the gangly tweens sitting cross-legged around a bonfire roasting marshmallows at sleepaway camp this summer while singing “You’ve Got a Friend,” the Carole King-penned classic included on “Tapestry” but made famous on Taylor’s 1971 album “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon.”

They're the kind of bands that lazy summer evenings on the lawn are made for. Plus, they happen to be the bread-and-butter of outdoor amphitheaters starved for new headliners who can bring out massive crowds from June to September. And this summer I decided I was going to go see as many as I could, because, well, they're not getting any younger and life's to short to have regrets, right?
Which is why I found myself standing next to my father-in-law at a nearly sold-out Riverbend Amphitheater in Cincinnati, Ohio, on a perfect Wednesday night (June 30) for a show by guitar god Eric Clapton and Who singer Roger Daltrey, one of only three (he informed me, because he does his homework) shows the two charter Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legends would be playing together this summer.

The first time I heard Rush, everything else I was doing suddenly didn't matter. My body just started releasing Dopamine like some sort of excited puppy with a weak bladder. I had been playing drums for about five years at the time and was listening to guys like Rod Morgenstein of the Dixie Dregs, John Bonham, Steve Smith, who played with Ahmad Jamal, Montrose and Jean-Luc Ponty before joining Journey, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd and Stuart Copeland; anyone who gave me inspiration. As I sat there completely immersed in the syncopated precision of this Canadian power trio, I remember thinking to myself, "Who are these Gods?" Twenty-five years later, that question was skillfully answered by writers/directors Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen, creators of Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and Iron Maiden: Flight 666. Their latest in-depth documentary, Beyond The Lighted Stage...
