- While he was serving in the United States Navy during the 1960s, he began performing.
- In 2007 he was named as Poet Laureate of Texas.
- He was president of the folk music club at North Texas State University (now University of North Texas).
- Graduated from Denton High School in Denton, Texas in 1963. Following graduation he enrolled in North Texas State University (now University of North Texas) in Denton, Texas.
- He died from an accidental gunshot. He was moving a rifle from a vehicle when it slid out of its case and fired when the stock hit the ground.
- Survived by 2 daughters: Darcy and Felicity. Darcy was the inspiration for his song "Dear Darcy". Felicity Music was the name of his recording company.
- Admitted to the Texas Music Hall of Fame in March 2003. 30 days later he had a massive stroke that required e years of physical therapy to relearn to walk, talk, play the guitar and sing.
- He has two daughters, Darcie (to whom the song "Dear Darcie" is dedicated) and Felicity (for whom his record label, Felicity Records, is named).
