The spaceship is one of the true hallmarks of the science fiction genre. Without these technological marvels, how else might we explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no man has gone before? Yes, sci-fi is rife with spaceships of all kinds: capital ships, cruisers, fighters, freighters, yachts, rockets, space stations, escape pods, flying saucers, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. Despite their myriad differences, though, the majority are united by a single key attribute -- they're all seriously cool.
But what actually makes a spaceship "cool?" Is it enough to give it a slick look and make it go fast? Well, a nice coat of paint certainly doesn't hurt, but it takes more than mere aesthetics to win the hearts of sci-fi fans. Spaceships might be considered cool because they show off unique abilities, play a compelling role in a story,...

Some of my favorite episodes of TV in recent years have come from the previous two installments of Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival, Carnival of Doom and Curse of the Shadows, so I can't wait to see what spooky surprises are in store for Midnight Society members both old and new in the latest season, Ghost Island. Ahead of its July 30th premiere on Nickelodeon, we have a look at the new trailer featuring an eerie hotel with one room in particular that guests should avoid staying in:
From the Press Release: Produced by Ace Entertainment, the limited series will debut with a two-hour episode on Saturday, July 30, at 7 p.m. (Et/Pt) on Nickelodeon, with the remaining episodes airing Saturday, Aug. 6, and Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. (Et/Pt). Thirty-five years ago, James Cameron’s Aliens opened in theaters, stunning audiences and surprising even the most jaded critics. Here was a much belated sequel to a Hollywood blockbuster that was seven years old—and at a time when sequels were synonymous with soulless cash grabs. Yet in so many ways, Cameron’s follow-up took the ideas introduced by Ridley Scott and company in Alien and ran with them. More than just an added “s” in the title, Aliens marked an entire shift in tone and even genre. Rather than horror, we were now in the realm of action; instead of hiding in the shadows, the sequel overwhelmed audiences with spectacle. Like the poster said, “This time, it’s war.”
With near universal praise, Aliens even earned an Oscar nomination for star Sigourney Weaver in a role she’d already played once back in 1979. Hence many fans have spent years...

Exclusive: The music-driven project Mixtape, which landed on the 2009 Black List, is finally turning up the volume at Netflix.
Outer Banks and The Archer director Valerie Weiss has come aboard to direct, with a number of actors joining the cast including two-time Emmy winner Julie Bowen, Gemma Brooke Allen, Nick Thune, Jackson Rathbone and newcomers Olga Petsa, Audrey Hsieh and Diego Mercado.
Stacey Menear penned the original script with revisions by The Half of It‘s Alice Wu.
In Mixtape, on the eve of Y2K, orphaned, awkward 12-year-old Beverly Moody (Allen) discovers a broken mixtape crafted by her teen parents. Raised by her grandmother Gail (Bowen), a former teen mom herself who finds it painful to speak about her late daughter, Beverly sees this mixtape as a chance to finally learn more about her parents. So she sets out on a journey to find all the songs on the tape.

Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the upcoming three-part limited series reimagined from the 1990s cult hit that fashioned horror stores from kids’ points of view, will have its world premiere screenings at Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest ahead of its October 11 debut on the Viacom-owned network.
Beyond Fest will screen the first two episodes October 7 at an all-ages event at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, with a panel to follow featuring castmembers Lyliana Wray, Sam Ashe Arnold, Miya Cech and Jeremy Ray Taylor and executive producers Spencer Berman of Ace Entertainment, writer BenDavid Grabinski and director Dean Israelite. From Super Mario Bros to Devil May Cry, we delve into the past to pick out 7 games that changed considerably as they were developed...
Odd List
The complex process of making a game requires the coordination of programmers, artists, designers, musicians and accountants. It's little surprise, then, that things can change drastically over the course of the months or even years it takes to make a game, and history is littered with examples of this.
Take, for example, Team Fortress 2, a shooter that went through multiple iterations and even changes in art style before the final version became a popular success. There are far, far too many other examples to list here, so what we've done is whittle our selection down to the ones we either found the most interesting or the most significant from a historical point of view.

Chicago – Should Alejandro Jodorowsky have been able to direct his psychedelic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, the results would’ve been less of our planet compared to films like “Blade Runner” or “Star Wars”. Prismatic spacecrafts and golden landscapes would have filled Jodorowsky’s mad canvas, as created by stargazing designers like Jean Giraud and H.R. Giger.
A famous actor/director, pleasantly plump in his later years, would have floated through the air, while another renowned artist shares his expensive cameo time with the image of a flaming giraffe. Inspired by the dynamism of science fiction book covers, “Dune” was also due to have an original soundtrack by Pink Floyd. Could such ambition actually have come true? The $5 million that the project failed to procure has prevented us from ever knowing. Until recently, Jodorowsky’s version of “Dune” remained a dream, a quixotic collision of transcendental imagination with multiplex intent.

Should Alejandro Jodorowsky have been able to direct his psychedelic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, the results would’ve been less of our planet compared to films like Blade Runner or “Star Wars“. Inspired by the...

Whether you’re currently single or in a relationship, I hope you all had a good Valentine’s Day weekend, dear readers. Unfortunately, aside from The Lego Movie, it’s still slim pickings at our movie theaters right now if you’re looking for something good to watch. But as always, there are upcoming films to look forward to, and trailers for those films for me to examine. And this week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at the upcoming documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune.
Premise: The story of cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ambitious but ultimately doomed film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel Dune.
My take: Speaking as a cinephile, one thing that has always fascinated me are the stories of famous lost projects – film productions that were supposed to happen, and in many cases had notable people attached, but ended up not...

Years before David Lynch’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel earned its undisputed place as the worst film of his career, another visionary director came close to making a version of it that may well be the greatest film never made. Alejandro Jodorowsky, the psychedelic surrealist and creator of such trippy classics as Holy Mountain, Santa Sangre and the original ‘Midnight Movie’ El Topo, came very close to making a hugely (possibly too) ambitious version of the book, and the story of his film’s rise and fall makes for an intriguing documentary.
Extensive interviews with the vibrant Jodorowsky, now in his mid 80s, form the core of the film, along with animated versions of story board drawings by French artist Moebius and interviews with other key members of the creative team as well as Jodorowsky admirers including Nicholas Winding Refn and Richard Stanley. The storyboard book...

With a looming summer season packed with post-apocalyptic sci-fi--from "After Earth" (May 31) and "World War Z" (June 21) to "Elysium" (August 9) -- it's a good thing that director Joseph Kosinski's "Oblivion" is first out of the gate. This Tom Cruise-starrer about a blue collar drone repairman haunted by dreams of a woman he's never met stands apart from the competition, mainly because architect and video game designer Kosinski's follow-up to "Tron: Legacy" is a passion project he's been developing for eight years that allows him to strut his visual stuff. The philosophical "Oblivion" mines the depths of the genre with elements of thriller, mystery, action, and romance, wrapped around a prevailing sense of melancholy countered by a brighter watercolor design aesthetic that recalls the works of illustrators Chris Foss and Peter Elson. While "Oblivion" also can't escape riffing on such sci-fi faves as "La Jetee," "Planet of the Apes,...

Foss’s groundbreaking and distinctive science fiction art revolutionized paperback covers in the 1970s and 80s. If you’re at all familiar with popular sci-fi novels of the 1970s and 80s, chances are you will have encountered the work of Chris Foss. Well, really it’s more than likely that you might inherently link the way you think about those universes to his own imagination – because British artist Foss was responsible for revolutionising the art that would be used on the covers of such novels.
Fans of Foss’ work, including artwork for books by generic icons such as Isaac Asimov, E. E. Doc Smith, Arthur C. Clarke, A. E. Van Vogt and Philip K. Dick, and film design for Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick, can now get their hands on this celebratory tome that focuses on the artist’s work. Through it they can see the evolution of his style, which would go on to form a major reference point for all subsequent sci-fi artwork and...

As a film nerd, you grow up hearing about certain films that almost got made but something (or everything) went wrong. Like Kubrick’s Napolean film. Or Gilliam’s Man of La Mancha. Or Swrilee, a film about a man with an ice cream cone for a head (look up the short film). One other ‘holy grail’ of missed opportunities was Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune, his adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel. If you ever read about what he was going to do with the book, it would have been as insane as his past films (such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain).
This was back in 1974/1975 and we would have had a Dune with Salvador Dali as the Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, Orson Welles as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and Jodorowsky’s own son Brontis would have been the hero Paul Atreides. The soundtrack would have been made by Pink Floyd.
