Claire Simon’s Our Body is now showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries. Our Body.At the beginning, as I say in the prologue of the film, the initiative came from Kristina Larsen, and I was delighted because she's a producer I have a lot of respect for. She told me that she had just spent two years in hospital, that she had discovered this world—the carers, from nurses to doctors, and the patients—and that the ward she was in encompassed everything that women go through in the course of a lifetime. I was very touched by her proposal, not least because when I made Les Bureaux de Dieu (2008), a fiction about family planning, I'd been angry with myself for not having included pregnancy follow-up, which is sometimes provided by family planning. The pill, abortion, pregnancy, controlling one's body, and the desire for a child are all part of the same movement.

With her deeply invested observational documentaries, London-born French filmmaker Claire Simon has amassed a body of work somewhat comparable to that of American master Frederick Wiseman, in its focus on institutions and the transitory communities they foster. She has previously explored the teenage experience in a French high school (“Young Solitude”); the foot traffic in Gare du Nord train station (“Human Geography”); the comings and goings in Paris’ Bois de Vincennes park (“The Woods Dreams Are Made Of”); and one of the annual intake sessions at Le Fémis, the country’s leading film school (“The Competition”). Her latest outing, “Our Body” luxuriant in length but never less than compelling, immerses us in the day-to-day drama in a French hospital, specifically the departments dedicated to women’s health, with typically compassionate and insightful results. Typical, that is, until Simon herself unexpectedly becomes one of her own subjects.

Despite several documentaries about the Gaza Strip, the territory remains one of the least understood and visited crisis zones, bombarded by Israeli rockets and torn apart inside and out by propaganda wars that deny any sense of individuality to the 1.8 million people living there. When glimpsed in news reports, the images usually consist of explosions seen from afar, edited together with screaming women and weeping men that convey a sense of misery detached from tangible reality. “The Gaza Surf Club” was one of the few films to show a different picture, and now there’s Italian director Stefano Savona’s trenchant “Samouni Road.”
Destined to become a touchstone in the cinematic representation of the Strip, the documentary combines live action, superb scratchboard animation overseen by Stefano Massi, and recreated drone footage to capture the lives of an extended farming family before and after the 2009 Israeli invasion that left 29 people dead...
