Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water… Scratch that. Just when you thought it was safe to go anywhere Near water, along comes Ghost Shark!

You see Smallport has a mysterious cave that dates back to the early settlement days, a cave that was the location for a number of deaths and a cave that is the subject of a local legend which foretells that any man, woman, and in this case shark,...

Stars: Tracey Gold, Edward Furlong, Bug Hall, Ethan Phillips, Olivia Hardt, Megan Adelle | Written by Paul A. Birkett, Eric Forsberg | Directed by Griff Furst
Last week we reviewed Dragon Wasps, a Syfy channel produced creature feature released by Chelseas Films and this week we have Arachnoquake, a Syfy channel produced creature feature released by our friends at Signature Entertainment. I think I see a trend forming… Not that I’m complaining, I love the cheesy Syfy channel TV movies – mainly because unlike big-budget Hollywood flicks, these movies know exactly what they are and their limitations and have fun with it! This time round it’s the story of an earthquake in the Deep South that, besides making a mess of the roads, unleashes a swarm of albino spiders of all shapes and sizes who, as they do in these types of movies, converge on New Orleans to reek havoc on the locals.

San Diego’s Comic-Con International is the biggest event in the world devoted to genre pop culture. While the big Hollywood movies get the most mainstream press, there’s also a large, lesser known and promoted Independent Film Festival devoted to genre short films tucked away within the overall convention.
The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.
The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.
Programming blocks are broken up by genre and the full film lineup below gives the exact starting time of each short film. There’s also one feature film screening this year,...

This weekend’s premiere of Jersey Shore Shark Attack begins the first of four straight weeks of new Syfy creature features. We now have our first look at what to expect three Saturdays from now when New Orleans is under siege by huge albino spiders unleashed by an Arachnoquake.
Swamp Shark director Griff Furst unleashes a new terror on Southern Louisiana in this Syfy original from writers Paul A. Birkett (Altitude) and Eric Forsberg (Mega Piranha). It’s up to Tracey Gold (“Growing Pains”), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Ethan Philips (“Star Trek: Voyager”), and the appropriately named Bug Hall (American Pie Presents: The Book of Love) to save the Big Easy from a horde of over-sized albino spiders set loose from their underground lair by an earthquake.

Thor has an uzi! Kevin Nash is Odin! Richard Grieco unleashes his own private Dragon Wars on Los Angeles! Did I mention Thor shooting an uzi? The gods command you to watch the marvelous trailer for The Asylum’s Almighty Thor right now!
Relative newcomer Cody Deal is the Norse god Thor, having left Valhalla for modern day Los Angeles to save our world from the evil Loki (Richard “Booker” Grieco), who has slain Odin (sports entertainer Kevin Nash), stolen the Hammer of Invincibility, and intends to devastate our world by unleashing giant monsters.
The Mummy’s Patricia Velasquez co-stars as a warrior princess of some sort.
Christopher Ray (Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus) directs.
The script for this one was penned by Eric Forsberg. You may recall him as the writer-director of Mega Piranha, the greatest Asylum movie of all time, in my humble opinion. He may have done it again.

If you were a child of the early 80s, chances are you watched Rolf Forsberg's post apocalyptic short, Ark, in science class. And if you were young enough like I was, it left an indelible impression on you and you'd just love to see it's breathtaking 1970s bleakness all over again.
Synopsis:
Set in a near-future Earth where the atmosphere is so polluted that most species are extinct and humans must wear gas masks outdoors, one man finds a pond with some small breath of life left in it, builds a greenhouse around it, and delicately but diligently tries to bring it back to life.
Father of Mega Piranha director, Eric Forsberg, Rolf's history as a film and theater director is a little less schlocky. He is most known for directing such films as the award winning Parable and the very odd Stalked which has been described as "Carnival of Souls for Christ.

The mockbuster is a genre sneered at by pretty much even the average film-goer. But aren’t they entertaining in a ‘so bad it’s highly entertaining’ sort of way? Mega Piranha was released in the summer but now the legendary Asylum Home Entertainment premiered the trailer for Mega Shark Vs. Crocosaurus via MTV.
Back in the summer we interviewed director Eric Forsberg – a man responsible for the genre’s rise – for his take on the mockbuster. You can read it here. Of course the movies are poor and very silly, but they clearly have an audience – even if it’s just to laugh out how shite they films are. Although Joe Dante legend Robert Picardo stars in this one. – a man who played The Cowboy in Inner Space – and got to mouth one of the greatest lines of dialogue in cinema history: “Women, they love me. But you know that.

Director: Eric Forsberg. Review: Adam Wing. Writing reviews can be a thankless task at times, occasionally in can seem rather pointless as well. Some films don’t require explanation; some films are kind enough to write their own reviews before they leave the production line. Anything made by Asylum Films is a good example of this. So I admit, occasionally I feel like watching a really bad movie. Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus was a terrible film in every sense of the word, but even that had its moments of inescapable delight. The dire-logue, Debbie Gibson as a scientist, a flying shark eating a plane… so it’s fair to say that we all know what to expect from Asylum Films by now, the real question is - how can I possibly stretch a review out any further than this?...

Something fishy is going on in the world of cinema.
This weekend's much-touted release of Atmosphere's creature pic Piranha 3D, directed by Alexandre Aja, enters the arena on the heels of Syfy's recent fish-themed horror romp Mega Piranha, directed by Eric Forsberg.
And who's keeping score? Well, given the warm reception that Mega Piranha got at Comic-Con and the fact that it was Syfy's No1 watched movie premiere of 2010, probably a lot of people.
We all know about Piranha 3D, a $25million special effects extravaganza helmed by Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, The Hills Have Eyes), produced by Atmosphere Entertainment (The Spiderwick Chronicles, 300), and starring Kelly Brook, Richard Dreyfus, Elizabeth Shue and Ving Rhames.
The appeal of the film (beach babes, bouncing boobs and a girl-on-girl underwater kissing scene between Brook and porn star Riley Steele) was explained on our Lads Lounge blog.

The Asylum originally planned the release of their audacious Mega Piranha as something of a mockbuster designed to coincide with the then planned theatrical release of Piranha 3D. When Piranha 3D got pushed back to this weekend, I joked that maybe this time The Asylum can claim that the theatrical movie is mockbustering them. According to the odd press release that showed up in my box today, they've taken my jest to heart.
Mega Piranha director Eric Forsberg has thrown down the gauntlet of sorts by sending out this press release asking which over-the-top piranha flick will reign supreme in the hearts and minds of movie watchers. Read for yourself.

Piranhas are proving a popular choice in films at the moment.
Released on the big screen on August 20 is Piranha 3D in which an underwater tremor frees a prehistoric variety of the flesh-eaters into Lake Victoria, just as residents and tourists gather for fun in the sun during the spring break.
And out on DVD from Metrodome this week is Mega Piranha, in which giant mutant fish escape from the Amazon and chomp their way towards Florida. Pop singer Tiffany is among the cast of the creature feature.
Mega Piranha went down a storm at a limited London screening last month, as viewers played a game to guess the number of deaths and revelled in the cheesy special effects, bad acting and overblown tone.
But reviewers were less than happy and, as you can see in the following compilation of critiques, proved their teeth were more than a match for the film's aquatic horrors.

The mockbuster genre has spawned from a long and fine tradition of exploitation cinema. There’s films such as Eric Forsberg’s Mega Piranha that are finding audiences across the world desperate for some hokey and ludicrous fun. The old adage that ‘nobody sets out to make a bad movie’ has been turned upside down.
The collective experience of watching a dreadful film, whether on the cinema screen or with friends, is turning into something of a cult phenomenon. Laced with irony, but played straight and with some seriously deranged ideas, the mockbuster series might become a new art form unto itself. Are they the product of counter-cinema or just bad film-making? Like Larry Kaufman’s Troma outfit, these new breed of movies are marketed as ‘so bad they’re good’, and it works.
Could the mockbuster be the evil twin of the Hollywood blockbuster set to wreck havoc of its own?...

If the film critic and blogger world is currently gushing like a busted dam over Inception, then they’re united in mutual loathing for the latest mockbuster – Mega Piranha. One is reminded of the critical drubbing given to Citizen Kane upon its release back in 1941.
So let’s call Mega Piranha the ‘Citizen Kane of Monster Movies’. Here’s a fine selection of reviews from UK-based outlets.
“The tiny pause at the end of every line and the wooden reaction shots tell us where we are: B-movie hell. The monster fish are about as scary as tinned tuna. Paul Logan plays one of the least Special Agents ever sent to troubleshoot. The screenplay is credited to Eric Forsberg. Watch out for his work.”
One Star / The Independent
“A cynical and humourless attempt to fabricate B-movie chuckles in the “creature-feature/red-scare” vein. With a nod and wink, the film serves up loads of wooden acting,...

A deliberately bad piece of retro trash from the director of Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, emulating the worst 1950s Hollywood horror flicks with a tale of mutant piranha in Venezuela. Only for the most indefatigable followers of camp. Playing an American ambassador eaten by piranha, Eric Forsberg is as bad an actor as he is a director.

Inception (12A)
(Christopher Nolan, 2010, Us) Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard. 148 mins
Nolan pushes the mega-budget cerebral action thriller to its limits here, and possibly beyond, with a multilayered onslaught that could leave you exhilarated, exhausted, or possibly in need of a new brain. The fiendishly complex plot imagines a world where corporate spies can raid your dreams to steal, or plant, ideas. Thus, DiCaprio assembles his team and orchestrates a risky psychic heist involving dreams within dreams within dreams; something like Ocean's Eleven meets Synecdoche, New York, multiplied by James Bond. Even if it follows the logic of the Hollywood blockbuster more than an actual dream, this boldly goes where no blockbuster has gone before. And there's nothing your brain can do to stop it.
Bluebeard (15)
(Catherine Breillat, 2009, Fra) Lola Créton, Daphné Baiwir, Dominique Thomas. 80 mins
Charles Perrault's wife-slaying fairytale has been rich territory...

Pop star Tiffany - best known for her 80s hit I Think We're Alone Now - has recently been making the transition into feature films, beginning with the 2009 thriller Necrosis, also released under the name Blood Snow.
This month will see the singer appearing in the Metrodome release Mega Piranha, which gets a limited cinema run in London on July 16 and comes out on DVD on August 9. A trailer for the film is included below.
It's from the same studio that brought us last year's Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, starring fellow 80s pop star Debbie Gibson, in which two prehistoric sea-creatures wreaked havoc after being thawed out from a glacier.
Mega Piranha is written and directed by Eric Forsberg, now well known in the mockbuster genre as the man who penned Snakes on a Train, 30,000 Leagues Under the Sea and War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave.

Up until now our only glimpses at the spectacle that is Mega Piranha have come from snippets posted on Syfy's website. Now The Asylum has finally gotten around to posting the official trailer. I do not want to oversell this trailer as the most absurdly awesome 1:19 minutes you'll ever see, but even if you have no intention of ever watching Mega Piranha, you *must* watch this trailer.
The Asylum gave MTV the exclusive on the Mega Piranha trailer. No doubt hoping this will become a viral phenom like the Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus trailer in time to boost viewership for this Saturday's 9/8 Central Syfy premiere. The uncut DVD (i.e., Boobs!) arrives later this month on April 27th. Pre-order your copy below.
While you're at it, read my interview with the film's director, Eric Forsberg, by clicking here. And then head over to The Asylum's Cafepress store and buy some Mega Piranha merchandise.

I first interviewed Eric Forsberg back in August of 2006 in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in April of 2010, and I am interviewing him again in anticipation of Mega Piranha, another killer animal mockbuster he's made for The Asylum.
I'm feeling a sense of déjà vu. With Mega Piranha debuting on Syfy April 10th and then hitting DVD shelves on April 27th, now seemed like a good time for a lighthearted return engagement with Mr. Forsberg discussing the majesty of Mega Piranha, what it's like working for the mockbuster masters at The Asylum, and his past, present, and future projects.
Foy: When we first spoke back in 2006, it was in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in 2010 speaking in anticipation of the release of Mega Piranha. Is there no escaping the Asylum?
Eric: No, there isn’t,...

Funny that The Asylum has yet to release an official trailer for Mega Piranha, but Syfy has posted a sneak preview video clip as they begin promoting the film for its April 10th premiere. If this is a taste of things to come, I think it is safe to say that the movie is going to be quite the schlocktacular spectacle.
I have a lighthearted interview with Mega Piranha writer-director Eric Forsberg that will posted later this week. He has told me that the official trailer should be going live any moment now. This wild piranha-kicking scene from the flick Syfy has put up will have to suffice for the moment.
Between the carnivorous oversized piranhas and Tiffany's scenery chewing, looks like everything's getting devoured one way or another in Mega Piranha.

Oh no, a mutant strain of piranha have been released from the Amazon! They are coming this way to bite the s*(^ out of your DVD player, unless 80s pop queen Tiffany (Necrosis) can stop them! This is the plotline for the latest Asylum release, Megapiranha, which releases on DVD April 27th. The Asylum is on the loose with the campiest of horror. 6 Guns, Paranormal Entity, and a strangely lucid Sherlock Holmes are all titles from The Asylum catalogue, that will be released shortly. Yet, Megapiranha will have viewers laughing in their seats. Have a quick read of the synopsis for Megapiranha and peep the movie poster, seen left.
The very complex plot summary for Megapiranha:

Release Date: April 27th (DVD).
Director/writer: Eric Forsberg.

Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here.
Saturday
After being up way too late the night before watching Golden Girls and Sex And The City reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, Die-ner (Get It?).
Yes, the “Get It?” is part of the film title, which I’m now publicly begging the filmmakers to change. Why? Because this film is so much smarter than the title. Die-ner (Get It?) is a well directed, well written and well acted serial-killer-plus-zombie flick that makes great use of its limited resources. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend Patrick Horvath’s awesome motion picture.
As we walk out of the theater for a quick break, J.T. Seaton* and Michael Simon* join our gay horror cabal.

As I drove up the winding mountain road to Big Bear, CA in the pitch-black night, I wondered, “What’s gay about the Big Bear Horror Film Festival?” Answer: just about everything.
What I didn’t realize before arriving was that a large homo contingent would be in attendance. In fact, there were so many gays in this tiny mountain village, to write “out gay ____” before each name I mention would be a chore. So I’m going to denote all the gay up in Big Bear with a “*”.
The Backstory: Several months ago Bbhf founder Michael Coulombe* pinged me via this blog with some very preliminary info on the fest. Sensing an opportunity to spread my super-important opinions around, I offered myself up as a judge for the festival. Realizing what a publicity juggernaut this blog can be, he immediately said, “Yes!” and I was on board.
