New York — Comedian Dave Attell told a packed house at the Comedy Cellar that New York after Superstorm Sandy had a familiar feel. "It was dark. Toilets were backing up. ... It was pretty much like it always was."
Another comic, Paul Mecurio, told the same crowd that he got so many calls from worried family members that he started making things up about how bad it was.
"I'm drinking my own urine to survive," he joked.
New York's comedy clubs, some of which had to shut down or go on generator power in the aftermath of the storm, dealt with a bad situation like they always have – by turning Sandy into a running punchline.
"If they're going to do jokes on Sept. 12 about Sept. 11, then this thing isn't going to slow us down," said Vic Henley, the emcee of a show Oct. 28 at Gotham Comedy Club.

This past weekend at the Camden International Film Festival, Mike Attie and Meghan O'Hara's pitch for their Vietnam War reenactor film "In Country," came out as the Points North Pitch winner. The pair's film was up against seven other projects, including Ben Niles' "Some Kind of Spark," which won Indiewire and Ciff's Project of the Week contest this September. After expanding the Pitch contest to documentary filmmakers from across the U.S. (previously, the Pitch was only open to projects from New England-based filmmakers), Points North Producer Sean Flynn said the number of applicants doubled. Attie, in fact, is from Seattle, and O'Hara is based in San Francisco. While there are quite a few other pitch contests (Toronto's Hot Docs Forum hosts a pitch contest; Britdoc and the Sundance Institute Documentary Program host the roaming issue doc pitch program Good Pitch), Camden's Points North Pitch Contest may...

Chicago – The story of Sean Flynn – son of the legendary Errol Flynn, perpetrator of B-movies in the early 1960s, game warden in Kenya and finally war correspondent during the Vietnam conflict – would rate enough material for a 10-hour mini-series. Only his disappearance is covered in “The Road to Freedom.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Flynn, who famously first came to light during a vicious custody battle between his mother Lili Damita and father Errol Flynn, probably deserves a better narrative treatment than the soft soap that is “The Road to Freedom.” He is written and portrayed rather blandly, and the road he does travel as a reporter in war-torn Cambodia is paved with what looks like the same five soldiers of the Khmer Rouge regime.
Joshua Fredric Smith portrays Flynn, who is characterized by his roguish looks and reporter’s instinct. It is learned that he will go the extra mile to get the story,...

It’s been a while since we’ve heard much from the production of Return of the Killer Shrews (here), a sequel nearly 50 years in the making to the cult “classic” from 1959. But today we got a new poster, some new casting news, and the first pic from the set. Check it out!
Certainly, this film will have better production values compared to the ultra-cheapie original film. The cast is interesting: John Schneider (ex-Duke of Hazzard and Clark Kent’s father in Smallville), Sean Flynn (grandson of Errol Flynn), Jennifer Lyons (CBS’ Desperate Housewives) and Bruce Davison (X-Men and Willard), who will compliment James Barr, who starred in the original Killer Shrews.
Here’s the first on-set pic with Director Steve Latshaw, Dan Golden and co-writer Pat Moran on location.
Below is a conceptual art design of the killer rat, followed by the 1959′s creature:
Pretty cool. Can’t wait to see them in action.

The long awaited sequel to Tron, Disney’s groundbreaking computer-animated 1982 feature (titled Tron: Legacy) is heading to the cinema screenings soon, and HeyUGuys were fortunate enough to attend a special screening yesterday, where they were privy to 23 minutes of footage (all in 3D!) and a preview of the film’s score, composed by French electronic duo Daft Punk.
The footage began with an introduction to lead character Sean Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) as he is being informed of a signal coming from the pager belonging to his long-lost father (Jeff Bridges). He traces the signal back to his dad’s games arcade – a place which has been left untouched since his disappearance decades back. This scene has a nice nostalgic feel to it, and an audience who came of age in the same era as the original film will be delighted to hear the game sound effects and music pumping out...

John Lassiter humbly acknowledged the influence of Steve Lisberger’s 1982 classic Tron, when he said: “It will always stand as the mile stone of computer animation. Without Tron, there would be no Toy Story”. High praise indeed coming from a revolutionary figure in computer-designed animation.
With the advent of the video game era and the obligatory movie tie-in, FilmShaft went along to the Soho Hotel in London last Friday afternoon (8th October) to experience the Tron: Evolution game for ourselves and see a bit of footage from Joe Kosinski’s forthcoming sequel, Tron: Legacy.
If ever there was a perfect unity between two different mediums then cinema and the video game are it. They complement and inform each other because both are in the business of creating worlds and scenarios closest to a dream.

Day three of Movie-Con III kicked of with probably the most anticipated footage of the event, the Tron Legacy preview. The preview we were shown appears to have been the same one shown at Comi-Con although there was also an interesting Q&A from Producer Brigham Taylor. The footage comprised of a few scenes followed by a montage. It was described by Taylor as “An introduction to this new world”. Here’s the lowdown on what that was (minor spoilers included).
The footage started with what appeared to be Sam’s arrival in the world. He was then chosen to take part in the ‘Games’. This fate is apparently less than desirable as one character chose suicide rather than taking part. He jumped from a ledge and shattered into glass pieces. After having his clothes removed by four women Sam is dressed in a black outfit and given a memory...

Forty years ago on April 6, 1970 two combat photojournalists covering the Vietnam War were captured by factions of the Viet Cong and Khmer Rouge in Cambodia and never heard from again. The news of their capture received much attention in the media when the identity of the two was released. For taken along with Dana Stone, a CBS correspondent was Sean Flynn, international film star and the only legitimate son of legendary movie star, Errol Flynn and his first wife, French actress, Lili Damita. The exploits, on and off screen of Sean‘s dad, Errol Flynn have earned him a controversial, if not legendary status in Hollywood history. His fame exceeded his starring roles in such Hollywood classics as, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (1938),“Captain Blood” (1935), “The Sea Hawk” (1940), “Dodge City...

Dear Staff of Cinema Retro:
Your magazine is the best of its type and along with FilmFax is one of my favorite reads! Your most recent issue was especially interesting. What caught my eye was the ad for "The Crimson Blade". I have been doing research re: the forgotten films of Sean Flynn, son of Errol Flynn. (I did notice when "the Italian offerings" were mentioned, there was no mention of 1962's "Il Figlio del Capitano Blood"!) The interesting coincidence is that when "The Son of Captain Blood" premiered in the U.K. in 1963, released by Warner-Pathe, in some regions it was shown on a double bill with Hammer's "The Scarlet Blade", which as I am sure your staff knows is the original title of the film released in the U.S.A. as "The Crimson Blade"! Also according to articles I have been reading re: the release of Sean Flynn...

Sean Flynn Biopic In The Works
The life of Hollywood icon Errol Flynn's son is to be documented in a new biopic.
Sean Flynn, an actor-turned-journalist, is the legendary star's son from his first marriage to French actress Lili Damita.
Flynn was working as a photojournalist for America's Time magazine when he vanished in the Cambodian jungle in 1970.
No one heard from Flynn or his colleague ever again - and their disappearance has remained a mystery.
The pair is believed to have been kidnapped by rebels, with many holding the country's former rulers Khmer Rouge or Vietnam's Viet Cong militant group to blame.
Now Flynn's disappearance is to be explored in a new project, which is to be developed by Mythic Films. Ralph Hemecker will write the script with Perry Deane Young, while Hemecker will also direct, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Sean Flynn, the son of Hollywood icon Errol Flynn, is set to get his big-screen moment.
The late offspring of the classic actor is the subject of "Flynn," a feature that Millennium is developing with Ralph Hemecker's Mythic Pictures.
Hemecker, a prolific TV writer who created the TNT movie "Witchblade," will direct; he is writing the screenplay with Perry Deane Young, who also wrote the book on which "Flynn" will be based.
The movie will serve as a biopic of Sean Flynn, a photojournalist who disappeared in the Cambodian jungle in 1970 and was never heard from again. Both Flynn, a Time correspondent, and a CBS colleague are believed to have been captured by either the Viet Cong or the Khmer Rouge, both of whom were highly active in the area Flynn was working.
Flynn, the only son of Errol Flynn and Lili Damita, worked as an actor for several years before turning to journalism. He appeared in a sequel to "Captain Blood," in which father of course starred.
