Prison films and series tend to pick one of the following themes: Action flicks with plenty of fighting, starring the likes of a Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme or Scott Adkins. Usually, it’s a good guy fighting for survival against overwhelming odds. Next would be the slew of sexploitation women-in-chains sort, using the premise as an excuse for nudity and other aspects of lurid appeal. Most were B movies that thrived in the 1970s –‘80s. The “Orange is the New Black” series classed that genre up considerably without losing its titillation value. Then there were high-quality character dramas like Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke and The Rock. Finally come comedies like The Longest Yard.

Dr Sales has been racking up sales for Danish drama series “Prisoner.”
Starring Sofie Gråbøl, David Dencik, Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt and Charlotte Fich, it has been picked up by BBC (U.K. and Ireland), Canal+ Group’s channel Polar+ (France), MHz Choice (U.S.), Sbs (Australia), Npo (Netherlands) and BeTV (French-speaking Belgium).
Revolving around four desperate prison guards, forced to deal with everything from rampant drug trade to their personal problems and imminent closure of the prison, the show was created by Kim Fupz Aakeson.
“‘Prisoner’ is an authentic, complex and compelling portrait of the harsh realities of life in prison, where it isn’t only the inmates who are trapped,” said Sue Deeks, head of program acquisitions at BBC, with Npo’s Evelien Bloemena adding:
“It’s about people with good intentions forced into difficult situations. A series with a great cast and a good fit for us as a public broadcaster.

Everyone is a “Prisoner” in a new Dr Drama series created by Kim Fupz Aakeson, just shown at Canneseries. Not just the inmates crammed inside an old Danish prison, but the people who guard them as well.
“Twenty years ago, I wrote a Dogme film [‘In Your Hands’] that also took place in prison. I became interested in these guards, because who takes on that job? Who walks into such a hostile environment every day, unarmed?!,” he wonders.
The characters – played by “The Killing” star Sofie Gråbøl, David Dencik, Charlotte Fich and Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt as Sammi, an ambitious rookie – have to watch their backs. But frustrated criminals are not their biggest problem: it’s the system itself, which leaves them powerless.
“It’s an extremely hard profession, poorly paid. They are constantly understaffed,” observes Gråbøl. Taking on Miriam, who still believes in people even though she can’t trust her own son.

Danish Broadcaster Dr has ordered “Prisoner,” a dark-edged premium series which starts shooting this fall with a stellar local cast including Sofie Gråbøl and David Dencik (“Chernobyl”).
“Prisoner” was created by Kim Fupz Aakeson, whose credits include the Dr drama “Cry Wolf” and the HBO series “Utmark.” Michael Noer (“Papillon”) and Frederik Louis Hviid are set to direct.
Produced by Dr Drama, the series is told from the perspectives of four prison officers, Sammi, Henrik, Miriam, and Gert, who are colleagues in an old, worn-down Danish prison and face daily challenges and dilemmas. The story kicks off when they are forced to do a thorough investigation in the prison to save their jobs and prevent the hierarchy and drug trade from dominating the workplace within three months. The investigation turns into a battle for survival — not only for the prison but for everyone inside and outside the walls.

Aooowww — Woo! Jack Nicholson summons his inner dog — and dons the makeup and scary contact lenses — to go the Larry Talbot route. Unfortunately, his moon-howling nighttime life isn’t as interesting as the dog-eat-dog infighting in the publishing house where he works – where feral instincts and sharp lupine senses are a major aid to ‘getting a leg up’ on the competition. I know, cheap metaphors are the ruin of promising writers.

Fall is upon us, and with it a fresh new crop of Netflix movies to curl up with when the weather starts to turn. Next month’s most exciting addition to the streaming service is “Mudbound,” the Southern World Ward II epic from up-and-comer-turned-force-to-be-reckoned-with Dee Rees. Netflix sealed the biggest deal of this year’s Sundance Film Festival when it paid a whopping $12.5 million for “Mudbound,” setting a high bar for the drama. Balancing out the heavier fare are classic comedies like “Men In Black” and “Scary Movie,” as well as “Field of Dreams” and “42” for the baseball lovers.
The fresh crop also includes a bevy of critically acclaimed documentaries, such as “Eventual Salvation,” “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary,” and “Cuba and the Cameraman.” Jim Carrey’s creative process gets a deep dive in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which includes never-before-seen behind the scenes footage from Milos Forman...

Two great staples of the horror genre are risk and restraint. Speaking to the latter, the alien was always scarier when you didn’t get a good look at it, and what’s in the mist is more frightening before you make your way inside the cloud. What scares us most is in our minds, and imagining the fate of facing the unknown is often more scarring than seeing it first-hand.
What drives that fear is risk. Whether we’re merely worried about one precious character dying or an entire cast getting picked off one by one, risk elevates the stakes. Take, for instance, when not only a father is at risk but his whole family. Instinctively, we care about the kids. We care about their mother. We care about the dad, sure, but more about the innocent than the guilty — nine times out of 10 the children are only paying...

You never heard of the Great Glasgow Ice Cream Wars? They weren’t exactly Armageddon, and the gentle director Bill Forsyth makes a radio personality’s involvement with two competing ice cream companies more of a plunge into amiable drollery. If you like Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero you’ll understand the odd, unhurried attitude of this oddball show from 1984.

Hulu’s “Harlots” arrives at a key time for women’s sexual and reproductive health. Not only are those issues being addressed in today’s political climate, with Texas in particular considering various anti-abortion legislation, but Hulu’s other big spring release, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” also addresses a woman’s ability to decide what to do with her body.
But while “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dystopian story of women forced to breed for high-ranking men, “Harlots” takes a more practical approach to how women used their bodies to deal with oppression. Becoming a whore or madam wasn’t ideal, but in 1760s Georgian London, it was both lucrative and offered the best chances at some sort of upward mobility and independence – unlike the conditions of the completely patriarchal marriages of the day.

Debbie Reynolds, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, was one of the last icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Throughout her nearly seven decade career, Reynolds made a name for herself as a triple-threat singer, dancer, and actor — with roles in big-screen MGM musicals and Broadway shows. She was also chart-topping recording artist and dynamic live performer, who toured the country for years as a night club entertainer.

There are so many reasons for the movies’ recent fascination with Barack Obama’s formative years — this summer saw the release of “Southside With You,” a chintzy rom-com that chronicled Obama’s idyllic first date with his future wife — but chief among them is the feeling that he’s the first modern President who feels like a real person. Which is not to say that Bill Clinton is an android or that George W. Bush is (necessarily) a stack of hay that’s been stuffed into a business suit and enchanted by a vengeful wizard, but that Obama came to lead America in large part because he is America, a one-man melting pot whose vagabond life was driven towards a singular destiny. He knows what it means to be an outsider in this country, to be rejected for attempting to make good on the promise of his homeland. He did drugs.

Whenever a Dilaurentis stops by, you're guaranteed drama.
That was the case on Pretty Little Liars Season 7 Episode 7 when Jason returned to Rosewood, and brought a whole lot of angst with him.
He wasted no time in trying to get rid of Mary Drake. Someone has to be blamed for all of the drama in town, and she's an easy person to shift the target to.
There's a high chance she knows more than she's letting on. Are we meant to believe she apparently doesn't remember this other child of hers?
Yes, Charlotte has a sibling, but could the sibling really be the person orchestrating this reign of terror against the girls? It just seems so damn stupid to have another hidden member of Alison's family.
All of the stuff with the storm cellar was intriguing, but I refuse to believe Mrs. D was the one who had all the files on the girls.

2016 Heroes Con Review
Author - Mark Cook
****More pictures from HeroesCon, and artist interviews, can be found in the Heroes Con Exclusive Pages****
It was a beautiful weekend in Charlotte, Nc for the 2016 Heroes Con. Fellow writer Mike Connally and I were lucky to attend the Con. I decided to break my review down into categories since there was so much to take in during the event:
1. Artists – Neal Adams, Juan Doe, Paulina Ganucheau, Stacey Lee, and Freddie Williams II were just a few of the 300+ artists who were in attendance at HeroesCon. All artists were eager to speak with fans, sign autographs, prints, commissions, and some would draw an original sketch of your choosing depending on the amount of time they had.
The Artist Stage was also interesting. Artists would take to the stage, paint or draw an original piece while the crowd could sit and watch, and they would later be auctioned.

We chatted to the writer and cast of new BBC supernatural period drama starring Colin Morgan, by the co-creator of Life On Mars...
On the wall of Ashley Pharoah’s office hangs the bullet-riddled driver-side door of a red 1983 Audi Quattro. It’s a set-souvenir from Ashes To Ashes, the time-travel police drama he co-created to follow Life On Mars. Somewhere nearby is a sepia photograph of a young man looking justifiably disturbed by the sack-headed, creepily masked figures who surround him. That’s Pharoah’s souvenir from the set of The Living And The Dead, an eerie period supernatural drama launching in 'box-set' form on BBC iPlayer tomorrow.
Set in 1894 Somerset, The Living And The Dead is in the tradition of the dark English pastoral. It pits the rural customs and rites of an ancient way of life against the modern ingress of industry and technology.

The TLC go home show. How quickly are WWE pay per views coming round these days?
This week’s episode looked set to be a bumper edition after a couple of new factions were established last week. Sheamus ‘recruited’ King Barrett, Rusev and Alberto Del Rio to form the League of Nations, while Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose joined forces with The Usos to form a family, of sorts. The powers that be have a lot of explaining to do as to why the factions are together now which would be sure to take up a very boring opening 20 minutes of the show.
The other main talking point heading into this week’s Raw was who would be the fourth man? Last week’s episode saw the shock return of Tommy Dreamer to a WWE ring, as the Ecw Original assisted The Dudley Boyz against the Wyatt Family.

Ready for something actually relaxing? Perhaps the Merchant Ivory team's most gentle and pleasant film, this comedy of English manners at home in Surrey and abroad in Italy is a visual and dramatic delight. Full disclosure: Danish series "Unit One" hit shelves in late October, right around when I received my review copies of all thirty-two episodes of the show. Between day-to-day work, the awards season, and the holidays, it has taken me a while to make my way through the series, but there is perhaps no better time than in the quiet of the early winter TV and movie season to settle in with the International Emmy Award-winning procedural. Bringing the progressive attitude of "Borgen" (a decade before that show aired), along with the camaraderie found between the characters in the original series of "Law & Order" (along with great knack for crime storytelling), "Unit One" has lost none of its potency fifteen years since it first broadcast in 2000, and it's well worth tracking down. While it's still something of an achievement when an actress is chosen to lead a new television series on U.

It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.
As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry.

Director: Ole Bornedal Starring: Anders W. Berthelsen - Jonas; Rebecka Hemse - Julia; Charlotte Fich - Mette 'Beautiful women and a mystery. Isn't that how all film noirs begin?' This observation, made early on by our leading man's confident, not-so-subtly clues us in on that which we are about to see. And although in itself it is more thriller than mystery, it certainly manages to more than hold its own in the film noir genre. The 2007 creation of Danish writer/director Ole Bornedal - due for DVD release in the UK this week - Just Another Love Story is a smartly made, well acted, and suspenseful piece, which combines an involving plot with an enjoyably dark sense of humour. The aforementioned leading man is Jonas (Anders W. Berthelsen), a crime-scene photographer who lives a pleasant if sanitised Ikea-esque lifestyle with his wife Mette (Charlotte Fich) and their two children.

What a brilliant film. It's a genuinely fresh feeling to be drawn in and affected by a film nowadays - with so much stale material on a reviewer's plate, sometimes it's difficult to remember just how good films can be. Ole Bornedal's 2007 Just Another Love Story (Kærlighed på film) is an impeccably mounted neo-noir, using typical genre tropes to tell an immediate and effective story. It's a mix of genres that at first almost dares you to expect the film and filmmaker to let you down. But it never does. It never ceases to impress in telling an intricately plotted and perfectly crafted story with its potently talented director, cast and crew. The performances are stellar, the cinematography is gorgeous, the soundtrack is just right and the editing takes daring risks with symbolism that pay off in the end.

'Just Another Love Story" is anything but. Under Danish writer-director Ole Bornedal, it is a creative mix of horror, noir and psychological thriller. At times the story defies logic, but viewers who can accept that will find themselves caught up in the film's intensity.

PARK CITY -- "Just Another Love Story", a compelling psychological thriller from Danish writer-director Ole Bornedal, wins style and design points but is weak on logic.
Nevertheless, that style -- self-confident, smart, keenly observant -- pulls you into a slick and somewhat disturbing film noir. The film certainly is playable in North American and European art houses, even though it ends on a chilly note that some might find off-putting.
Bornedal makes no bones about borrowing from here and there, and one such borrowing comes from "Sunset Boulevard", where the corpse of a crime victim narrates his fatal tale.
The man lying quite dead on a sidewalk one rainy night is Jonas (Anders W. Berthelsen), estranged husband of Mette (Charlotte Fich), who the next moment comes moving into the frame, screaming. How Jonas ended up dead involves a love story. Of sorts.
Julia (Rebecka Hemse) comes into Jonas' life with a bang. Actually worse than a bang as the distracted woman, on a cell phone, swipes her rental car against Jonas' beater, which has stalled again on a road outside of Copenhagen. She then crashes head-on with an oncoming vehicle, her car flips over and she winds up in a coma in a hospital.
Feeling unreasonably guilty, Jonas sneaks into Julia's hospital room, where her family mistakes him for Sebastian, a new boyfriend she acquired on a recent trip to Southeast Asia. Jonas doesn't bother to correct them. When Julia awakens, conveniently suffering from amnesia and near blindness, she accepts him as Sebastian, too.
Jonas happens to work as a photographer of crime scenes, so a police colleague, Frank (Dejan Cukic), checks on this Sebastian fellow. Another dramatic convenience: Frank learns that Sebastian, a low-life though charming smuggler, died in Hanoi.
Pretty soon, Jonas is leading an implausible double life: a loving and compassionate Sebastian to Julia and her wealthy family and a distracted and miserable Jonas to his own family. Jonas already was in the midst of one of those midlife crises that are staples in Scandinavian cinema, where the hero just doesn't like the life he leads and wants a completely different one. So he gets his wish.
Julia's recovery is miraculous, the two fall into something resembling love, her family adores Sebastian, and she is pregnant. So who is that guy with his face wrapped in bandages like the Invisible Man, always lurking around her room? How did Julia get pregnant before she and Jonas had their first rendezvous in the hospital bed? If you're thinking that this Sebastian fellow Nikolaj Lie Kaas) might not be dead after all, you really don't have another choice.
Bornedal builds his suspense neatly, upping the emotional ante every so often with a new twist and fully exploiting exquisite cinematography by Dan Laustsen in Denmark and Cambodia and a fine guitar-based score by Joachim Holbek. Irony is writ large everywhere as the film dispassionately charts the new life and the seemingly inevitable demise of Jonas/Sebastian, who falls deeper and deeper into a self-made quagmire.
The climax is genuinely suspenseful, menacing and nerve-racking. You might not buy all the elements -- it's a little too neat, too engineered. But then, the same can be said for the entire movie.
