Maluma’s vision was crystal clear as he delved into creating his hit single “Según Quién.” The record began during a studio session with Edgar Barrera and Keityn in Turks and Caicos as he locked into album mode for Don Juan, which has been nominated for Best Latin Pop Album for this year’s Grammys. The Colombian musician was ready to return to his roots for a bit, but when the pair of producers played him the first guitar chords that would form the foundation of the single, he had...

Acts like Peso Pluma, Eslabón Armado, Grupo Frontera, DannyLux, and Conexión Divina have turned the music of their roots into a multi-genre movement.
"It's a super-cool moment for our culture and our music, and being able to contribute to this musical movement is a dream come true for all six of us," Adelaido "Payo" Solís III, the lead singer of Grupo Frontera, tells Popsugar. "We feel incredibly proud and privileged to be a part of this música Mexicana explosion happening on a global scale."

Last month, Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro put out a call to the public, asking people to send ideas for music by Latin artists to submit to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. It’s part of a years-long effort on Castro’s part to get more Latin art preserved within the Library of Congress and to increase Latino representation across media and pop culture.
The National Recording Registry is made up of works considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” or that “inform or reflect life in the United States.

Who didn’t Tony Bennett duet with?
The legendary singer was famously known for his Grammy-winning, platinum-selling Duet albums that featured everyone from Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse to Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand.
Here, we celebrate the collaborative efforts of Bennett, who died Friday at age 96.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga ditched the upbeat, electronic dance sound that made her popular to work with Bennett on jazz music, a genre she had been singing since she was a teenager. The New Yorkers first collaborated on “The Lady Is a Tramp” from Bennett’s 2011 release Duets II. The pairing was so perfect they went on to record 2014’s Cheek to Cheek, with Bennett and Gaga hoping to turn more kids to jazz music. “[Gaga] has a vast group of young people who love her, and they’ve never heard popular jazz music, classical American music … and my ambition was to do this...

It’s not that Alejandro Fernández wants to walk away, it’s that he knows he deserves better. On Thursday, the ranchera star premieres the video for “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir,” the newest single from his upcoming album, with Rolling Stone.
“It was an honor to work with my compa [and música Mexican songwriter] Edén Muñoz on this song. It’s one that so many can identify with: unrequited love and how sometimes the only option is to let go,” Fernández says. “Even if it hurts.”

There's no doubt that the Mexican music that has come out over the years has been some of the most far-reaching and storied in Latin America, with legends like Vicente Fernandez, Juan Gabriel, and Chavela Vargas all helping to cultivate a distinct legacy. But with her R&b-tinged sound, up-and-coming singer Ilse Adriana Mercado Asencio, better known by her stage name Immasoul, is looking to show the world just how diverse that legacy can be, while championing the blending of Mexican and Caribbean cultures that collide in her hometown of Chetumal.
"Nobody really knows about Chetumal. It's a very unique small town that shares a border with Belize."

In Mexican culture, when someone is singing or playing a song that tugs hearts or provokes tears, the instinctive reaction is to let out a prideful, ebullient shout called a grito. The adlib is at the core of age-old mariachi classics from legendary Spanish-language vocalists like Pedro Infante, José Alfredo Jiménez and Vicente Fernandez, to name a few.
The ensemble-styled genre has long been categorized as traditional music, often heard at family parties or special events, but “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” a production by Osmosis Films, Embeleco Unlimited, Impact Partners and Fifth Season that premieres at the Sundance Film Festival today (Jan. 22), sets out to prove the opposite. From the producer team of James Lawler, Luis A. Miranda, Jr. and Julia Pontecorvo, “Going Varsity in Mariachi” follows the talented 20-member group of high school students who make up Edinburg North’s Mariachi Oro 2021-22 team in Texas. Netflix’s “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” just had the streaming service’s most-watched Week 1 for a new series on record. And yes, that includes “Squid Game.”
“Dahmer” earned a whopping 196.2 million hours viewed in its first week of availability, which was really just five days. It debuted on a Wednesday, giving the Ryan Murphy drama starring Evan Peters a two-day head start on many other Netflix shows; with some variation, the streaming service typically premieres on Fridays. The Wednesday start was a bit of a throwback for Netflix; given these results, it may be tempting to bring back the company’s former favorite launch day.
For some immediate context, Netflix’s No. 2 series last week was Season 2 of “Fate: The Winx Saga,” which hauled in 60.97 million hours viewed in its second week on the charts (and first full week of availability). “Cobra Kai” Season 5 was third with...

When Rolling Stone asked Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez to share his pre-fight playlist with us ahead of his much-anticipated match against Gennady Golovkin on Saturday, we had some assumptions about what we’d get. Perhaps “Dákiti” by Bad Bunny. Maybe some pumped-up corridos, since he’s so proud of his Mexican heritage. Or self-empowering songs: “El Rey” by Vicente Fernández?
What he sent us, though, was a list of Mexican songs, yes. But much more mellower ones than we anticipated. There’s a pair of songs from Calibre 50 alum Edén Muñoz...

Another summer of content has come and gone in the streaming world. And to celebrate the arrival of fall, Netflix is filling its list of new releases for September 2022 with, what else? More content!
Netflix is never shy about loading up its servers each month but September 2022 is a particularly packed time for the streamer, particularly when it comes to movies. The list of prominent Netflix original movies includes: road trip thriller End of the Road (Sept. 9), Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes-starring dark comedy Do Revenge (Sept. 16), and the Marilyn Monroe epic biopic Blonde (Sept. 28).
That’s not even to mention the usual arrival of new library titles, which are particularly juicy this fall. September 1 sees the arrival of A Clockwork Orange, Clueless, Scarface, and more. Meanwhile This is the End is set to roll on Sept. 16.

The much-awaited duet with Christina Aguilera and Alejandro Fernández is out, and moving fast through the Internet. “Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti” (“Today I Want You") will be the single for Univision’s soap opera “La Tempestad” ("The Storm") starring William Levy and former Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete.
"This album is a classic, a gem from my point of view. It has taken a long time because good things take time,” said Fernández in a press release. “Christina has an amazing voice, sweet but also very powerful and full of feeling. I feel very happy and proud of the result.”
It is not the first time Aguilera sings in Spanish. In 2000 the star of Ecuadorian roots released an album entirely in Spanish called "Mi Reflejo.” The singer has also recorded duets in the same language in the past with Latin artists like Ricky Martin and Luis Fonsi.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love Ernest Borgnine. I certainly do and I was certainly sad to hear about his passing in 2012. If you’re a big fan and want to see Borgnine’s final work, make sure to check out Indican Pictures’ “The Man Who Shook The Hand Of Vicente Fernández.” The film also stars Barry Corbin, Carla Ortiz, Dale Dickey and Tony Plana. During The Voice's live play-offs on Monday night, the members of Team Blake and Team Adam all stepped up their game with impressive solo performances - but it will be up to fans to vote for who should advance. Monday's show kicked off with a group performance of Boston's "Peace of Mind" before the 10 individuals took the stage. And coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton couldn't be more proud of their teams. Team Adam's Joselyn Rivera sang Demi Lovato's "Give Your Heart a Break" that left Levine overjoyed. "I knew I wanted you on my team," he said afterward.

Music lovers in Newark, New Jersey are in for quite a treat this weekend. Not only will they get to enjoy Vicente Fernández perform one of his final concerts, they’ll get a special mariachi duet with Tony Bennett!
The legendary crooners are partnering up for one night only to perform the song “Regresa A Mí” Vicente and Tony previously recorded a studio version of the track for the upcoming Viva Duets album.
But getting the two on stage is sure to be a treat. Bennett and Fernandez performed a Spanish and English interpretation of the song for the Duets album and, if the fans are lucky, they could be singing both versions Sunday night.
And for the rest of us who can’t quite make the journey to Jersey, Viva Duets’ “Regresa” will arrive in stores on October 22. Let’s hope a live version bonus track comes with it.
