Fox’s first-year series Monarch is finished.
The network canceled the family drama set in the world of country music after a single season. The show’s season — now series — finale aired Tuesday night.
Monarch had initially been slated to premiere in January 2022 with the NFL’s NFC championship game as its lead-in. A few weeks before its debut, however, Fox pulled the show from that spot and moved it to the fall, citing pandemic-related concerns that production might be interrupted.
It premiered following an NFL telecast Sept. 11 and pulled in decent ratings but was unable to keep that audience once it moved to its regular time period on Tuesday nights. Monarch was designed to have a shorter run than shows like 911 or its lead-in The Resident, but it was also Fox’s first fully owned scripted series since the network split...

Fox has canceled “Monarch,” which starred Susan Sarandon as a country music diva, after one season, a network spokesperson confirmed Wednesday to TheWrap.
“We gratefully thank and appreciate the entire cast and crew for their dedication to ‘Monarch,'” the network said in a statement. Joshua Sasse, Anna Friel, Beth Ditto and Meagan Holder costarred and real country music stars, including Martina McBride, Little Big Town, Caitlyn Smith and Tanya Tucker made appearances.
The series debuted on Sep. 11, 2022, after an NFL double-header, before switching to its regular time period on Tuesdays. It was the number one drama debut for Fox’s 2022/2023 season and initially outperformed “Our Kind of People,” by 30 in the same time slot in 2021 before dipping in subsequent episodes.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Monarch Episode 7, “About Last Night.”] Monarch answers the questions we’ve had through the first six episodes: Who’s dead, and what exactly happened? The body is Nicky’s (Anna Friel) ex-husband Clive (Adam Croasdell), but there are a few steps before he’s buried. First, he attacks Nicky, and Gigi (Beth Ditto) intervenes, hitting him in the head with the award seen in a previous flashforward. Then, Albie (Trace Adkins) goes to bury him, only for it to turn out that Clive’s not as dead as he thought … yet. The Roman patriarch has to put a few bullets in him to finish the job. Showrunner Jon Feldman takes us inside that reveal and teases what’s ahead. When did you know you’d be killing off Clive? Jon Feldman: As we started to undergo this murder mystery subplot, we went through all the possible suspects and potential people...

Monarch, the new Fox series about death and betrayal within a famous country music family, premiered on September 11. Fans of the show, who are likely also fans of country music, would be blind not to note the shocking similarities the pilot had with the tragedy of Naomi Judd‘s final days. The country icon, who sang with daughter Wynonna Judd in the duo The Judds, passed away in April at the age of 75 from a self-inflicted firearm wound. And in the premiere episode of the new family drama, matriarch Dottie Roman, played by Susan Sarandon donning a red bouffant of hair similar to Judd’s signature look, takes her own life. The song played at Dottie’s funeral is also a Judd song, “Love Can Build A Bridge ” — which happens to be the exact same song Judd requested be played at her funeral. As eerie as it all sounds, Monarch...

Exclusive: Anyone who tuned into the first two episodes of Monarch, Fox’s primetime soap that stars Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins as the king and queen of country music, saw uncomfortable parallels to the real-life death of Naomi Judd. Besides depicting how Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon) orchestrates her own suicide in the premiere, the drama’s second episode on September 20 featured a funeral that was meticulously organized by Dottie before her death — just like what Judd did before committing suicide in April.
The fictitious funeral in Monarch even featured the popular Judd song “Love Can Build a Bridge,” which was sung by Wynonna Judd during the televised memorial for her mom.
Here, Monarch executive producer Jon Feldman, who replaced Michael Rauch on the drama last November, talks about the “eerie” coincidences in the series’ first two episodes and whether there was any talk about changing certain scenes after Judd’s passing.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Monarch series premiere “Stop at Nothing.”] Did Monarch just kill off Susan Sarandon in the first episode?! Well, here’s what we know. Sarandon’s Dottie has cancer and decides she wants to die “on her own terms,” turning to daughter Nicky (Anna Friel) to help here. Nicky does, reluctantly. When her sister Gigi (Beth Ditto) walks in at the end, Nicky says Dottie’s gone. Meanwhile, three months later, someone is definitely dead, and Albie’s (Trace Adkins) burying a body. So what’s next after that dramatic premiere? TV Insider turned to showrunner Jon Feldman to find out. Why kill off Dottie in the premiere? Jon Feldman: You’re gonna have to tune in to future episodes to see what happened to her. All will be revealed soon enough, but I will say that Susan’s gonna appear in multiple episodes over the course of the first season...

Fox kicked off a country music game of thrones on Sunday with a sneak peek at the premiere of Monarch, a twisted family drama where the only thing bigger than the hair… are the secrets.
Episode 1 introduces viewers to the Romans, the self-described “first family of country music,” led by egomaniac Dottie (Susan Sarandon) and her husband Albie (Trace Adkins), who’s basically the human equivalent of a dirt road. On the surface, Dottie and Albie have the perfect life, assuming you look past her terminal cancer diagnosis, his history of cheating, and the fractured relationships they’ve cultivated with their understandably screwed-up kids.

Susan Sarandon admits that that she knew nothing about country music before beginning work on Monarch, Fox’s upcoming sudser that the producers describe as “Empire meets Succession.”
Sarandon plays Dottie Cantrell Roman, the matriarch of the first family of country music. She’s married to Albie, who is played by Trace Adkins.
“I just go where the fun is, where I haven’t been before,” Sarandon told reporters Wednesday during Fox’s Television Critics Tour virtual panel. As for country music, “I never knew it. I smoked a joint with Willie Nelson. That’s as deep as I go.”
The actress is also cagey about how long she’ll stick around Monarch, which also stars Anna Friel as the heir to the country crown. At the risk of spoiling a major plot point, let’s just say Dottie’s character faces a few challenges.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Tru Calling was one of the most promising shows to debut on Fox in 2003. Created by Jon Harmon Feldman, who worked on shows like The Wonder Years and Dawson’s Creek, Tru Calling presented an intriguing plot and a list of talented cast members to breathe life into the series. The plot of the series, according to IMDb, is as follows: “A university graduate working in the city morgue is able to repeat the same day over again to prevent murders or other disasters.” Unfortunately, the show only lasted for two seasons. Killed by low ratings, it left a lot of unresolved storylines,

ABC has ordered two more drama pilots: Stumptown from writer Jason Richman (Detroit 1-8-7), Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad’s The District, and Triangle from Jon Harmon Feldman and Jennifer Gwartz and their Random Hill. Both are produced by ABC Studios.
Written by Richman, Stumptown is inspired by the graphic novels published by Oni Press. It follows Dex Parios, a strong, assertive, and unapologetically sharp-witted Army veteran working as a P.I. in Portland, Or. It appears there has been a recount! As foreshadowed by our August 13 Blind Item, the Kiefer Sutherland drama Designated Survivor — cancelled last May at ABC — has been resurrected by Netflix, with the streamer ordering a 10-episode Season 3.
Netflix confirmed the news late Wednesday, while also confirming that Neal Baer (Law & Order: Svu, Under the Dome) has taken over showrunner duties. This marks the series’ fourth showrunner change in two years. To recap: Amy B. ABC has put in development Best Wishes, an hourlong fantasy drama from writer-directors David Posamentier and Geoff Moore (Better Living Through Chemistry), Random Hill and ABC Studios.
Written by Posamentier and Moore, Best Wishes tells the story of a pragmatic, once successful man, Nick Day, who thinks the notion of wishes is a waste of time due to a personal tragedy he’s recently endured. But just as everything in his life is crumbling around him, things get more complicated when he’s approached by a potentially crazy woman claiming to be in the business of granting wishes. And she needs Nick’s help.
Jon Harmon Feldman and Jennifer Gwartz of Random Hill executive produce. ABC Studios is the studio.
Posamentier and Moore wrote and directed the 2014 feature Better Living Through Chemistry, which starred Sam Rockwell, Michelle Monaghan and Olivia Wilde. The duo most recently developed crime drama Down in the Valley with ABC.

We reported earlier today about Designated Survivor producer eOne shopping the Kiefer Sutherland-starring drama to other networks following its cancellation by ABC. I hear that eOne is in talks with streaming giant Netflix about picking up the political thriller.
Sources stress that the talks are still preliminary and complex as Netflix rival Hulu has U.S. SVOD rights to the first two seasons of Designated Survivor, which aired on ABC. Netflix has the series internationally (outside of the U.S. and Canada), which makes it a suitable home pending untangling U.S. streaming rights and crunching the numbers.
I also hear that the series’ creative team is excited about exploring what a premium version of Designated Survivor would be.

The decision to cancel Designated Survivor was not purely ratings-driven, per ABC president Channing Dungey. During a conference call with reporters Tuesday, the exec cited the series’ anemic “live” ratings as only part of the Kiefer Sutherland drama’s woes.
“Creatively, we’ve had a lot of behind-the-scenes churn on the show in terms of the number of showrunners involved,” she noted. “We were less confient with the creative path forward than the other shows we brought back.”

“Designated Survivor” had a tough second season ratings-wise, but the drama starring Kiefer Sutherland as the Commander-in-Chief was still seen as having a decent shot at winning a third term on ABC — until the ax fell on Friday.
The show, from Mark Gordon Co./Entertainment One and ABC Studios, had been a strong draw for eOne in international markets, an important factor these days in the survival of any scripted series. And Sutherland is the kind of name-brand star that broadcast networks like to have in their sizzle reels.
But “Designated Survivor” was handicapped almost from the start by a revolving door of showrunners. Entertainment One had lined up drama veteran Neal Baer to take the helm of season three, which would have made him the show’s fifth showrunner. Sutherland per his contract had veto power over showrunners and had approved Baer. Sources say Baer had been busy this...

ABC’s Designated Survivor will not see a third season. The network has canceled the Kiefer Sutherland starrer after two seasons. The May 16 season finale will now serve as the series finale.
The political conspiracy drama began its run as one of ABC’s most promising, snagging the Critics’ Choice award for most exciting new series in its first season. It had seen ratings declines in Seasons 2 and 3, but continued to be helped by strong DVR lifts. The series underwent a behind-the-scene turnover with a slew of showrunner changes over its three-season run.
