Netflix is building buzz for its spy thriller series Black Doves starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw.
The streamer has unveiled trailer and a slew of images promoting the show from Joe Barton, while revealing a premiere date of December 5.
Black Doves, which also stars Sarah Lancashire, is set against the backdrop of London at Christmas. It follows Helen Webb (Knightley), a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother — and professional spy. For 10 years, she’s been passing on her politician husband’s secrets to the shadowy organization she works for: the Black Doves. When her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated, her spymaster, the enigmatic Reed (Lancashire), calls in Helen’s old friend Sam (Whishaw) to keep her safe.
Andrew Buchan (Carnival Row), Adeel Akhtar (Fool Me Once), Tracey Ullman (The Tracey Ullman Show), Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country) and Luther Ford (The Crown), Koji (Warrior), Kathryn Hunter, Sam Troughton, Ella Lily Hyland, Adam Silver Ken Nwosu (Look the Other Way and Run), Gabrielle Creevy and Omari Douglas also star.
The show is the latest splashy offering from Netflix UK, which has made a slew of hits this year including Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen. It is being co-produced by Sister, which has just seen its previous Netflix show, Kaos, axed after one season. Barton’s outfit Noisy Bear is co-producing.
EPs for Black Doves are Knightley, Barton, Jane Featherstone and Chris Fry. Directors are Alex Gabassi (The Crown) and Lisa Gunning (The Power). Series producer is Harry Munday.

Keira Knightley is a spy now.
The actress will lead Netflix’s “Black Doves,” created by Joe Barton, opposite Ben Whishaw. It marks the actress’ first live-action TV role since she first rose to fame in “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” as a teenager. Whishaw was last seen on TV screens on the BBC/AMC 2022 hit “This Is Going to Hurt.”
“‘Black Doves’ is a very exciting spy thriller set at Christmas in London,” Knightley said at a Netflix event earlier this year. The first season will contain six episodes, and Netflix has already renewed it for a second season (so: It sure feels like a cliffhanger is coming).

Netflix has decided not to return to Mount Olympus, canceling its series Kaos after a single season.
The decision comes about six weeks after the dark comedy, based on Greek and Roman mythology and created by Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World), made its debut on the streamer. Kaos appeared in Netflix’s top 10 charts for English-language series in each of its first four weeks, topping out at No. 3 for the week of Sept. 2-8. It earned 14.9 million views (measured by total viewing time divided by running time) over those weeks, a middling number by the streamer’s standards.
In the United States, the show had 3.34 million views as of Sept. 8, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings (viewing totals for subsequent weeks aren’t yet available).

“How Do We Value Our Industry?” That was the question in focus during a Tuesday afternoon panel at the Royal Television Society’s (Rts) London Convention 2024.
The session, following morning appearances by Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, and BBC director-general Tim Davie, touched on what investors are looking for after the recent $1.45 billion takeover of All3Media by RedBird Imi and whether consolidation is the only way forward.
The panelists were Jane Featherstone, co-founder and chief creative officer of production firm Sister, Harry Hampson, global chairman – investment banking/corporate & investment bank Emea at J.P. Morgan, and former BBC chair Richard Sharp, now partner at asset management firm SW7.
Featherstone argued that after a big jump in production activity, the market has contracted again. “There was probably too much,” she said, mentioning that at the height of the production boom there were around 1,400 shows being produced a year in the U.

Sister co-founder Jane Featherstone has said the contracting TV market in the U.K. has created a “difficult few months” for production companies.
“Some have closed down and people are losing their jobs,” she said. “Producers like me are trying to navigate how we have a mixed ecology [between public service broadcasters and deep-pocketed U.S. streamers.]”
“We’re in this structural change where there will be consolidation of some kind to get us through this,” she added.
“When we all started [in the industry] twenty-five years ago there weren’t that many of us and the market was in a very different place. I don’t see doom and gloom forever I think we are in a transitional moment. I do believe in the next two or three years value comes back to producers and producers are valued again in that way.”

Former soccer star and style icon David Beckham graced a London industry conference stage to discuss how nervous he was to film his Emmy-winning documentary Beckham and gush over his wife.
He began by gifting Jane Featherstone, founder and co-cco of production company Sister Pictures, a pot of marmalade. “I made this for our 25th wedding anniversary, this label,” Beckham said, referencing his partner, ex-Spice Girl Victoria, “so this one is called ‘Sticky Vicky’.”
“I had to feel uncomfortable to make the documentary that we made,” he began on the doc, which took audiences through his career as a frenzied life in the spotlight as a footballer for Manchester United and a highly publicized relationship with Victoria. Beckham was met with critical acclaim when it dropped on Netflix.

David Beckham has opened up about the “really difficult” experience of being interviewed for 50 hours for the hit Netflix doc, while he praised director Fisher Stevens for making him feel “uncomfortable.”
Netflix has faced questions over the authenticity of Beckham, given that it was co-produced by his Studio 99 banner, but Beckham reiterated the point today that he first watched the show at its premiere and was not involved with its editing.
At the Rts London today, he laid out how tough the filming period was.
“It was really difficult and took me a long time to come to terms with the fact I was going to make it,” said the former soccer star. “It made me nervous and it made [wife] Victoria nervous because as much as people think they know everything about us, they don’t.”

A trio of British TV behemoths have said there are too many production companies as the middle falls out of the market.
Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland, It’s a Sin exec Nicola Shindler and BBC iplayer/channels chief Dan McGolpin all roundly agreed that the amount of work currently in the ether is unsustainable for the number of indies when questioned during this morning’s big panel at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
“You can’t sugarcoat it,” said McGolpin. “There aren’t enough money and hours to keep everyone alive.”
Holland said “in terms of sheer economics there are too many indies for the amount of hours,” while Shindler posited that “there are a lot of talented people who aren’t getting a look in.”
The issue has been perennially debated on Edinburgh panels down the years but during today’s debate it felt particularly stark.

Exclusive: Sister has upped its stake in podcast studio Campside Media to a majority shareholding.
The Chernobyl producer’s 2023 company accounts, seen by Deadline, revealed that Jane Featherstone and Liz Murdoch’s transatlantic studio “now has a controlling stake” in Campside and “will continue to support the business in its development of audio content and the exploitation of those rights.” Sister previously had a minority shareholding.
Sister took its minority stake in Campside several years back, soon after Campside launched, at which point it landed one of its most high-profile projects, a pod about the Hollywood con queen. Apple TV+ recently launched a docuseries on the same topic.
Campside has since become well regarded for a series of pods exploring a range of issues, including the Chameleon franchise. Most recently, it struck a first-look with Wondery for a multi-project slate and launched its debut original pod, White Devil, the story...

The series “explores a close-knit community who are unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown. Set in the fictional small Northern town of Chadder Vale, Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) investigates a series of strange and inexplicable crimes that have the townsfolk spinning on an axis. Riya arrived in decaying Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for that ‘one big crime’, the challenge that will make her feel alive again. Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears.

The Netflix streaming service has a new film chief in Dan Lin – and one of the first projects Lin has greenlit at the streamer is an adaptation of author Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 thriller novel The Woman in Cabin 10, which has Keira Knightley attached to star in it as the titular woman! Simon Stone, who previously directed The Dig for Netflix, will be directing the film from a screenplay by Snake Eyes writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (with Stone handling script revisions himself).
Knightley will be playing a travel journalist assigned to cover the launch of a luxury yacht. When she witnesses a passenger tossed overboard in the dead of night, no one believes her story as all on the ship have been accounted for. Doggedly she searches for answers, putting her own life in danger as the boat barrels through the desolate North Sea.

Parents will use whatever tools are at their disposal to help their children, so despite what Gaby Hoffman shouts at Benedict Cumberbatch in the first trailer for “Eric,” it makes perfect sense that a New York puppeteer would a big blue puppet to help find his missing son. Right? Right.
From creator and writer Abi Morgan comes the latest Netflix limited series, “Eric,” an original series set in 1980s New York and following Cumberbatch’s panicked father as he embarks on a unique odyssey to save his lost child. Edgar (Ivan Howe) is 9 years old when he heads off to school and isn’t seen again. His parents, Vincent (Cumberbatch) and Cassie (Hoffman), call the cops, make a plea on television, and do everything in their power to help locate their son, but the investigation keeps hitting dead ends. Frustrated and desperate, Vincent’s guilt curdles into something dangerous — or...
