It’s the time of Peak TV! There’s TV everywhere! You can’t shake a stick without hitting another TV show on another streamer! TV! TV! TV!
All that’s true — until it’s not.
The sheer quantity of TV does not always equate to quality TV winning out, and each year, there are a number of worthy shows that don’t reach whatever mystical threshold television executives have ascertained is required to keep a project in production. This is even more true this year, with the business pressures created by the pandemic often — and some cynics would argue, conveniently — cited as the reason for cancellation.
Here, IndieWire lists, in alphabetical order, the year’s shows that were canceled too soon. They’re gone — but not forgotten, thanks to the afterlife they could receive on those same streaming outlets that didn’t want to fund new episodes. As it turns out,...

Nick Antosca, who co-created Hulu’s “The Act,” is delving into another crazy real-life story.
The “Channel Zero” producer is teaming up with Ucp to develop a limited series about Jan Broberg and her multiple kidnappings. Ucp, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, nabbed the rights to Broberg’s stranger-than-fiction story series in what sources describe as a competitive bidding situation.
Broberg’s story was the subject of a Netflix documentary called “Abducted in Plain Sight.” Both Broberg and her mother Mary Ann are on board with this new project as producers.
The untitled Broberg series will follow the bizarre true story of how Jan was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by a charismatic, obsessed family “friend.” The Brobergs — devoted to their faith, family, and community — were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them.

There will not be a second season of USA drama series Dare Me. USA Network has opted to cancel the series, from Ucp and Peter Berg and Michael Lombardo’s Film 44, after one season, Deadline has confirmed. We hear Ucp will be shopping the series to other outlets.
Dare Me premiered to stellar reviews. Co-produced by Netflix, the series began an international run on the streamer last month, and has a second window run on Netflix in the U.S.
Based on the novel by Megan Abbott, who serves as writer and executive producer along with Gina Fattore, Dare Me is described as an unflinching exploration of teen angst, jealousy, loyalty and the dynamics of power in a small Midwestern town.
The series dove into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading. It follows the fraught relationship between two best friends after a new coach arrives to bring their team to prominence.

“Dare Me” won’t be cheering any longer.
USA Network has canceled the cheerleader drama after a single season, Variety has confirmed. However, the show’s producer Ucp is looking to shop it around, hoping to resurrect the drama elsewhere, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
The series centers around the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading. It follows the fraught relationship between two best friends (Herizen Guardiola and Marlo Kelly) after a new coach (Willa Fitzgerald) arrives to bring their team to prominence. While the girls’ friendship is put to the test, their young lives are changed forever when a shocking crime rocks their quiet suburban world.
Additional series regulars on the show include Rob Heaps, Zach Roerig, and Paul Fitzgerald. Joyful Drake, Tammy Blanchard, Antonio J. Bell, and Alison Thornton all played recurring parts.

Netflix seems to have found its niche. In the films department, the streamer has invested heavily of late in prestige content from some of Hollywood’s most respected minds, resulting in awards-friendly (if not award-winning) output like Marriage Story, The Irishman and The Two Popes.
The TV department has different priorities. Bingeable true crime documentaries and soapy dramas fill the site’s television slate, driving clicks and social media conversation often with markedly less investment. Think Locke & Key, Riverdale, You.
Dare Me is the quintessential new addition to that latter group. A ten-part series which first aired in the States on the USA Network late last year, joining Netflix internationally March 20, the show is a claustrophobic and occasionally bloody look at the always-competitive dynamic of high school teens. Cutthroat is the key word. Spoken in ominous voiceover, the show’s first line – “There’s something dangerous about the boredom of...

“Dare Me” was always going to end its first season with a surprise. Even after a midseason episode that unexpectedly switched up the show’s narrative format and the appearance of a dead body a few weeks later, “Dare Me” saved one of its most shocking twists for last.
After guiding Addy (Herizen Guardiola) through the discovery of Will’s body, the season’s farewell moments hint at the idea that Colette (Willa Fitzgerald) knew more about the circumstances of the Army recruiter’s death than she previously let on. When Addy confronts her about a nagging detail surrounding her alibi, the audience sees a flashback to that fateful night, indicating that both Coach Colette and her husband might know how and when Will died.

Universal Content Productions is bringing one of the brains behind breakout hit Dare Me in-house.
The studio has signed Gina Fattore, who serves as co-showrunner on the USA Network cheerleading drama, to an overall deal.
Under the pact, the Dawson's Creek alum will create and develop scripted fare for all platforms for Ucp — a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios. The news comes ahead of Sunday's season finale. A renewal is considered likely, though an official decision has yet to be determined.

Whether you read the book or just tuned in for the series, there’s a pervasive sense of dread that runs through “Dare Me.” In the opening episodes, there’s a cloud of sorts that hangs over the lives of the central trio of women at the heart of the USA series, even if it’s one that’s never fully articulated.
Well, at the close of Episode 7, the audience finally gets to see the seismic event that’s been hinted at in ways both subtle and overt. After slowly working into the lives of both Addy Hanlon (Herizen Guardiola) and her cheer coach Colette French (Willa Fitzgerald) — much to the objections of Addy’s best friend Beth (Marlo Kelly) — military recruiter Will Mosley (Zach Roerig) is found dead of a gunshot wound.

The opening of each episode of “Dare Me” is its own pearl, presenting the audience with a mystifying piece of visual information that hints at where things might be heading. In the case of Episode 5, that image is a floating tooth, drifting — as some of the series central characters are, too. Unsettling in isolation and horrific in context, it’s just one of the many storytelling levels that this USA series has discovered for itself.
“I think we felt freer to be more abstract and surreal as it goes,” series co-creator and novel author Megan Abbott told IndieWire. “This show has gone somewhat into this sort of unconscious state, with dreams and the different POVs. It gives you a little more freedom to play. We’re all David Lynch fans among the room and the crew and everybody, so we would often talk about our David Lynch moment.

Even before the blood starts flowing, “Dare Me” is a show dripping with the anxiety of potential danger. Its main characters are members and leaders of a high school cheerleading squad, and whenever they or one of their cohorts go flying through the air, a safe landing is never guaranteed. Watching these aerial maneuvers against a sea of psychological chaos is the contrast that not only gives this USA series its anxiety, but its artistry. It’s the kind of slow-churn vice grip you’d expect from a show based on Megan Abbott’s novel of the same name, in which Addy Hanlon relates the circumstances surrounding a shocking event that rumbles the foundation of her Midwestern town.
Abbott’s book was told through Addy’s eyes and ears. “Dare Me” the series builds out the rest of the perspectives of those that the book captures just in overheard conversations and merely hinted at characters.

When your job entails watching several new shows a week, overlapping themes are inevitable. Still, similarities between shows are rarely as stark as those between the first seasons of Netflix’s “Spinning Out” (out Jan. 2) and USA’s “Dare Me” (which premiered Dec. 20). Both dramas focus on teen girls as restless as they are talented, a combination that serves them well in their respective competitive sports — figure skating for “Spinning Out,” cheerleading for “Dare Me” — and have them scrambling to survive in their daily lives. Both examine motherhood, and how adults can blur the lines in their relationships to the teenagers in their care to devastating effect. Both are pulpy and propulsive as they set their bleeding hearts on a silver platter for the audience to eat up. And yet,
“Spinning Out,” from Samantha Stratton, follows a family of three women, each determined, stubborn, and skilled in her own way.

A lot can change in a few short years. Technology moves quickly, and so do colloquialisms. But when Megan Abbott and Gina Fattore were adapting Abbott’s 2012 novel “Dare Me” for a 2019 audience, they made it a point to focus more on the universality of a coming-of-age drama and how sometimes one relationship can change everything.
“We were always much more interested in the ‘internalities’ of adolescence, rather than the things that technology or social media change. You date yourself so quickly if you focus too much [on the latter], so we really tried to focus on the elements of being a young woman with feelings of yearning, the desire for more experience, that sense of wanting things that are just beyond your reach, and the feeling that you have power but also being thrown into situations where you’re suddenly aware of your powerlessness,” Abbott tells Variety.

When we first heard the premise for the upcoming USA Network series “Dare Me” which will premiere on December 29th, we had our doubts about just how well this series would be able to hold its ground against the many other suspense/thriller series out there in the television landscape these days, and “Dare Me” left us pleasantly surprised! We seriously could not stop watching! “Dare Me” became our newest television obsession and we think that it will be yours as well! The series is based upon author Megan Abbott’s best-selling novel by the same name, and Abbott also serves as showrunner alongside Gina Fattore. Peering behind the all-American facade, “Dare Me” dives into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading and the extreme lengths, both physically and psychologically that these young women will put themselves through in order to get ahead. After being nominated for an Oscar for her short film “New Boy” in 2007, Steph Green has consistently carved out a space for herself as a sought-out small-screen director. This year alone she has helmed high-profile episodes of equally important new series, including the Looking Glass (Tim Blake Nelson) backstory chapter of HBO’s “Watchmen” adaptation and the tone-setting premiere of Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” continuation series. Up next for Green is USA’s adaptation of “Dare Me.”

USA Network has ordered high school cheerleading drama “Dare Me” to series, a show based on the novel of the same name by Megan Abbott, an individual with knowledge of the deal tells TheWrap.
Here’s the official logline for the series: “Peering behind the all-American facade, the series dives into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading. Part coming-of-age story, part small-town drama, part murder mystery, ‘Dare Me’ exposes the physical and psychological extremes that some young women are willing to endure in order to get ahead.”
Abbott will serve as writer and executive producer, along with Gina Fattore.

USA Network has picked up to series its drama pilot Dare Me, from Universal Cable Prods. in association with Petter Berg and Michael Lombardo’s Film 44. Key to the project securing a series order by USA was Netflix coming on board for a co-licensing deal — called “co-producing” by USA — with the Internet network taking first-run rights to the series outside of the U.S.
Dare Me, starring Willa Fitzgerald, Herizen Guardiola and Marlo Kelly, was one of four pilots ordered by USA in April. Of the other three, Bourne offshoot Treadstone saw its order upped to straight-to-series last summer when another streamer, Amazon, signed on as international distributor, and Briarpatch was picked up to series last week. The fourth, Erase, starring Denis Leary, is not going forward.

The Matt Damon-led action thriller franchise is getting a prequel TV series called Treadstone. USA Network has ordered a pilot episode and it's being developed by Tim Kring, who created the hit superhero series Heroes.
I like the Bourne film franchise and I've enjoyed all of the films that have come from it. So I'm up for watching a series if it's good! If you couldn't tell by the title, the show will center around the CIA black ops program, Treadstone. Here's what we know so far thanks to THR:
Treadstone explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously "awakened" to resume their deadly missions.
This seriously sounds like it could be a great thrilling series!

USA Network has ordered four drama pilots. One is a spinoff of the “Bourne” movies, while another stars Denis Leary — and that’s just (literally) the half of it.
“Treadstone,” which hails from a “Bourne” franchise producer, “explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins,” per USA.
Leary’s “Erase” tells the story of Donal O’Neal, a “dirty ex-cop who decides to do the right thing and bring down his complicit superior officers,” according to the cable channel’s logline. “But his best weapon in this battle — a photographic memory — is suddenly compromised by symptoms of early-onset Alzheimer’s.”

“As the No. 1 cable entertainment network for a record 12 years in a row, USA Network delivers unmatched scale and momentum with a broad, diverse slate of programming,” said Chris McCumber, president, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “These new pilots add to our dynamic scripted pipeline with the big auspices, top creative talent and bold characters that have become USA’s signature.”
“Now more than ever, premium video content is proving to work the hardest for our marketing partners in helping them reach their business objectives,” said Mark Marshall, executive vice president, Entertainment Advertising Sales, NBCUniversal. “Having new, high quality scripted fare allows us to have the most meaningful conversations with advertisers about how USA can be a powerful part of their ad campaigns.”

“Treadstone”
From a producer of the “Bourne” franchise, “Treadstone” explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. From Universal Cable Productions, “Treadstone” is written and executive produced by Tim Kring. Ramin Bahrani, who will direct the pilot, will also serve as an executive producer. Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner will executive produce on behalf of Captivate; Justin Levy will executive produce alongside Bradley Thomas on behalf of Imperative Entertainment.
“Briarpatch”
Based on the Ross Thomas novel of the same name, “Briarpatch” follows Allegra Dill, a dogged investigator returning to her border-town Texas home after her sister is murdered by a car bomb. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring the corrupt hometown Allegra thought she left behind to its knees. Written for television by Andy Greenwald, who will executive produce along with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton, “Briarpatch” celebrates the beloved genre that Thomas’ book represents — a unique blend of crime, thriller, mystery, and pulp fiction – while updating his electrifying sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation. Yann Demange will direct and serve as executive producer. “Briarpatch” is a co-production of Universal Cable Productions and Paramount Television.

Parenthood, Season 5, Episode 14, “You’ve Got Mold”
Written by Gina Fattore
Directed by Ken Whittingham
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on NBC
This week, on Parenthood: Sarah gets a win, Zeek opens up, and Kristina gets another cockamamie idea
Parenthood has had varying success with its season-long exploration of crumbling relationships (Amber and Ryan, Camille and Zeek, Julia and Joel). Amber and Ryan flamed out spectacularly after weeks of emotional and engaging ups and downs, while Joel and Julia’s distancing has been far less effectively portrayed, with first Julia’s and now Joel’s motivations only peripherally explored. This week, however, both remaining couples and their problems are handled well, with respect and honesty.
Joel’s emotional journey this season is still painfully underexplored (the character’s tendency to internalize his thoughts has hampered this arc significantly), but every step in his moving out works, from Julia’s...

Parenthood, Season 5, Episode 4: “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities”
Written by Gina Fattore

Airs Thursdays at 10pm (Est) on NBC
This week, on Parenthood: Victor channels his inner mechanic, Sarah and Amber almost avoid fighting, and Drew dodges the Friend Zone
Parenthood has been characteristically strong this season, with a string of memorable, effective episodes. That doesn’t change with “In Dreams Begin Responsibility”, but after three episodes of bigger moments, this week we get a bit of a table-setter, quietly moving various plots forward and setting up developments yet to come.
The biggest change comes with Adam, who decides he and Crosby should start their own label. The scenes between Adam and Mista Ray are a lot of fun and rather telling, as Adam’s self-centeredness is called out a bit, but more than that, they show Adam’s changing perspective on the campaign and...
