News junkies relished the break in pre-election noise this week in celebrating the 25th anniversary of The West Wing, a show that portrayed politicians as “competent and committed.”
Aaron Sorkin, its mastermind, might be caught off-guard when discovering CNN’s new show, Have I Got News for You, which consigns all politicians to a state of buffoonery.
Derived from a steadfastly outrageous BBC format, Got News defies CNN’s codes of impartiality (it tilts liberal) not to mention propriety. Panelists casually offer sexual references that might even startle Bill Maher, whose show also re-runs on CNN these days.
Will angst-ridden American viewers accept a panel show steeped in snark – a sort of political snark tank? It’s worth a try, says Mark Thompson, the former BBC and New York Times executive who now runs CNN.

Do you remember when Sony’s Madame Web hit theaters earlier this year? It might feel like ages ago, but Sony’s female-led Spider-Man spin-off, intended to kick off a new movie series, struggled both at the box office and with critics. Although it grossed $100 million, it fell short of breaking even. On the bright side, the film found unexpected success on streaming platforms, as we reported earlier.
Streaming success can sometimes breathe new life into a film’s prospects. Given Madame Web’s dedicated fanbase, many are curious if a sequel might be on the horizon. Despite the interest from fans, there have been no updates about a potential follow-up.
According to reports from some of our colleagues on social media, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura seems similarly pessimistic about the prospects of a sequel. His comments suggest that there’s no concrete information about a follow-up being developed, indicating...

Remember when Sony’s Madame Web was in theaters earlier this year? Yeah, it seems like an eternity, but Sony’s female-led Spider-Man spin-off movie, which was supposed to launch a new series of movies, failed bitterly at the box office and among fans. While it did manage to earn $100 million, it wasn’t even enough to break even, but the series did become a streaming hit, as we reported earlier.
Sometimes, streaming success can actually help a movie going forward, and Madame Web does have a solid and devoted fanbase, which is why many people are wondering whether or not a sequel is going to be made. Many fans want it, but nothing’s been happening on that front.

Created by Alma Har’el and adapted from Laura Lippman’s crime novel of the same name, Lady in the Lake draws inspiration from two real-life murder cases in 1960s Baltimore. Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman), a middle-class mother in an unfulfilling marriage, serves as a bridge between the contrasting social worlds of the two victims: an 11-year-old Jewish girl, Tessa Durst (Bianca Belle), and an unidentified Black woman who investigators believe may be Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a missing mother of two.
In the opening episode, Tessa disappears while attending a Thanksgiving parade with her parents. Drawn by her fascination with seahorses, the young girl wanders into a tropical fish store, where she encounters the creepy manager, Stephan Zawadzkie (Dylan Arnold), and a Black customer, Reggie Robinson (Josiah Cross). These early episodes, marked by the uncertainties of Tessa’s death, set the stage for the show’s intrigue involving the central mystery.

It may be Monday, but there’s some hopeful news for fans of Friday — Ice Cube‘s popular comedy series that put Chris Tucker on the map with the original, as well as Mike Epps in its two sequels. The long-awaited fourth entry in the series, slated to be called Last Friday, was held up for a long time due to Warner Bros.’ control over the rights. Back in 2022, Cube explained, “I don’t know. Warner Bros. is weird right now. I don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.

Madame Web Promo Photos Reveal Our Best And Most Detailed Look At Dakota Johnson's Superhero Costume
Madame Web came and went earlier this year and will almost certainly go down as one of the worst superhero movies ever made. The cast and director Sj Clarkson made a valiant effort, but with a lousy script, there's little anyone could have done to elevate the material.
The costumes have received at least some praise from fans and close to 100 promotional shots of Dakota Johnson suited up as Madame Web have now been revealed.
It's a shame this was only in the movie for a matter of seconds, receiving the same scant screentime as the suits worn by Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon, and Mattie Franklin. The idea was presumably for them to properly suit up in a Madame Web sequel, though these characters - and that movie - are unlikely to ever be seen on screen.
Asked about the negative reviews shortly after the movie was released, Johnson said,...

Creators and executive producers Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes tell Tudum that they’re happy to give the Indiana clan a proper send-off. “Truly grateful to Netflix for giving us this season to once again bring the warmth and funny that we’re known for (and with this fifth and final — some closure) to our Upshaws family,” Hicks tells Tudum.

Exclusive: The Upshaws will be coming to an end. Netflix has picked up a 12-episode final installment of the blue-collar multi-camera comedy starring Mike Epps, Kim Fields and Wanda Sykes.
The streamer has been releasing (and renewing) multi-cam comedy series in parts, so the pickup is for Part 7 of The Upshaws, which Netflix calls a final season.
The six-episode Part 5 of The Upshaws premiered in Apil, with the 10-episode Part 6, the sitcom’s penultimate run, slated to debut in early 2025.
After the 10-episode first season, seasons 2 and 3 of The Upshaws were released in two parts each, consisting of eight and six episodes, respectively. They were followed by a 10-episode Part 6 and now 12-episode Part 7.
The Upshaws will wrap with respectable 60 episodes, the third longest run for a Netflix original multi-cam comedy behind The Ranch (80) and Fuller House (75).

Jharrel Jerome didn’t quite know what he was getting into when he received a somewhat cryptic email from filmmaker Boots Riley early one morning during the 2020 pandemic with the subject line “13-Foot-Tall Black Man in Oakland,” but it was enough to make him jump out of bed.
“For any actor to get a personal message from a director whom you admire saying, ‘I want you for a role,’ it’s a dream,” says Jerome, who plays Cootie in Riley’s fantastical series I’m a Virgo.
The actor was then two years removed from production on his Emmy Award-winning role as Korey Wise in Ava DuVernay’s 2019 Central Park Five miniseries When They See Us, and carefully weighing his options for his next part.

Netflix released over a dozen stand-up specials in the second half of last year and Matt Rife was the most-watched.
Matt Rife: Natural Selection, which was released in November, was watched for 13.5M hours. This was above specials from the likes of Shane Gillis, Tom Segura and Mike Birbiglia as well as Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah and Dave Chappelle (although the latter three launched theirs very late in December).
On the back of that special, Rife has been signed up for two further specials and is now developing a sitcom at the streamer.
Netflix has dominated the stand-up scene for some time now and recently launched the second iteration of its Netflix Is A Joke festival, where it had many of the biggest names in comedy across LA for two weeks.
The streamer is starting to find itself with some competition after Hulu announced it was going to compete with the rival streamer for specials.

For creator, writer, director and co-showrunner Boots Riley, the idea for his Amazon Prime Video series “I’m a Virgo” came from “just wanting to talk about the differences between perception of people and how they perceive themselves.” Specifically, “if you saw a 13-foot-tall Black man walking down the street, the last thing most people would think about is what he thinks about himself, so I wanted to talk about that” and explore “people connecting to each other on a personal one-to-one level, but also on a societal level.”
But how did he turn lead actor Jharrel Jerome into that gentle giant? We gathered Riley and Jerome, along with costume designer Deirdra Elizabeth Govan, production designer Maxwell Orgell and visual effects supervisor Todd Perry for a special roundtable panel to discuss the making of the unique social satire. Is it time to #RestoreTheMadameWebVerse?
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, we doubt it, but Madame Web is proving to be a hit on Netflix. After debuting on the streaming service earlier this week, Sony's Marvel Comics adaptation has hit #1 on the streamer's "Top 10 Movies" list.
Were people just curious to see how bad it really is or did fans who watched Madame Web in theaters simply want to relive those many meme-worthy moments? We don't know. Either way, it's led to the movie being a hit on Netflix!
"It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee," Dakota Johnson...

“Definitely the most challenging thing I’ve had to do thus far as an actor, a lot of mental gymnastics involved,” Jharrel Jerome admits about the uniqueness of his role in the Boots Riley-created absurdist series I’m A Virgo, on which he plays a previously extremely sheltered 13-foot-tall Oakland teen. “At no point do I look my scene partners in the eye, and as an actor that’s so critical, you know, as connection.”

Netflix is an amazing place because its library boasts not only its originals, but also licensed movies and shows that people either didn't have the motivation or the opportunity to watch before. Not all of these movies and TV shows become smash hits, or even get rediscovered — a bad project usually stays bad, except for the extra views. Still, a Netflix subscription is a great way to watch something you didn't want to spend a movie ticket on.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe films are particularly notable in this regard. Following Netflix's exclusive deal with Sony in 2021, a number of films, including Ssu, have found their way to the streaming service sometime after their theatrical release.
Now, the critically and commercially disappointing Madame Web is coming to Netflix's library, and it's happening much sooner than originally expected. Let's take a look at which regions and when the movie will be available for streaming on Netflix.

Madame Web arrived in theaters earlier this year and is seemingly destined to go down as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, it earned only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, making it a critical and commercial flop Sony won't easily recover from. Of course, it's too late now to change its 2024 slate as Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter are fast approaching.
Box office numbers like the ones above confirm the vast majority of fans and regular moviegoers didn't bother seeing Madame Web on the big screen, but you'll soon be able to watch it at home... provided you have a Netflix subscription.

Back in 2009, a horror film called Orphan told us the story of a married couple who adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl only to discover that she’s actually a criminal adult passing herself off as a child. The film was loosely based on the true story of Barbora Skrlova, a 30-something woman who pretended to be a 13-year-old and did some very twisted things that were very different than what we saw in Orphan. In 2012, a sad case that made it into news reports reminded people of Orphan. It was the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by American parents who began to suspect she was much older than records said she was. The Grace case has been covered on Dr. Phil and the docu-series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and now the Hulu streaming service is moving forward with a Natalia Grace-inspired...

Actor and rapper Ice Cube went in a fresh direction with his third Friday movie, After Next. It was the first holiday-themed Friday film, which was an inspired decision on Ice Cube’s part.
When Ice Cube decided ‘Friday After Next’ should be holiday themed Ice Cube | Maury Phillips/Getty Images
The Friday franchise was a more lighthearted departure from the usual ‘hood’ movies Ice Cube was familiar with. In an interview with CNN, he shared that one of his main motivations for penning Friday was to offer a different perspective on his roots.
“I knew things were bad in my neighborhood, but I didn’t feel like these movies feel at the end … When I was growing up, I didn’t feel this depressed,” he said.
Friday After Next would continue the humor that the franchise was mostly known for. But unlike the other two Friday features, the second sequel would revolve around Christmas.

What’s the saying? Oh yeah… third times the charm and the Resident Evil series is no exception. For our third outing we’re here to explore the aftermath of the apocalypse with Resident Evil: Extinction (watch it Here). This one is pretty divisive with the consensus being some people, like myself, loved this film while others felt this was the beginning of the downward slope of sequels of the franchise. Hear me out as to why I sing its praises. For one, it tells a cohesive story and gives us a side of Alice that we’ve been dying to see. We get more new characters that bring gravitas to the story as well as a fully fleshed out villain and it’s a lot of fun. Plus, its pays homage to The Road Warrior in the best way. So, let’s hit up the Sand Dunes of Vegas,...
