Nordic Honorary Dragon Award recipient Sidse Babett Knudsen said at Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival that she felt “frustrated” when filming HBO’s “Westworld,” particularly regarding the treatment of horses.
“In the U.S., they don’t have a flat hierarchy, which won’t surprise anyone. I would knock on the producers’ door all the time, saying: ‘These horses have been out in the sun for 10 hours, they are going to fucking die,” she recalled. “They are not even working today – get them in the shade!'”
She continued, “As a Dane, I was just looking at the resources, money and logic, going: ‘It’s crazy!’ But, of course, it’s super irritating when an actress talks about horses all the time. How did they react? Not well.”
In the first season of the dystopian series, Knudsen played Theresa Cullen, Westworld’s head of quality assurance. HBO did not immediately...

A panel of experts at Cph Pix say that the luxury of public support for Danish film may be inhibiting risktaking and creating a ‘monoculture’ on screen.
If you look in recent lineups of Berlinale Forum or Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, you see an absence of new Danish films. That’s despite the country’s film industry going through something of a golden age of international success from Love Is All You Need to The Hunt to A Royal Affair and Nymphomaniac, with one of the world’s best government-backed support systems for film.
So where are the ‘art’ films? That was the question posed at a panel on Thursday at the Cph Pix festival in Copenhagen.
Vinca Wiedemann [pictured], the widely respected producer who just became head of the National Film School of Denmark, noted that when she was the first artistic director of the Danish Film Institute’s New Danish Screen strand, which is engineered...

Chicago – Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr.’s “New in Town,” now on DVD and Blu-Ray, was a massive bomb in theaters, opening in 8th place and grossing only $17 million, less than any widely-released Zellweger film in her entire career.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0 I only mention this because so few people have seen the film that they may be drawn to it at Blockbuster or in their Netflix queue. “New in Town” isn’t nearly as painful as I expected it to be but the horrendous script sink all the best efforts of the reasonably charming Renee and always-good Harry.
New in Town was released on Blu-Ray on May 26th, 2009.

Ironically, .New in Town. is impossibly stale, a creaky fish-out-of-water rom-com headlined by Renee Zellweger that sees her corporate workaholic spinster find a new understanding of life and love amongst small-town caricatures. One has to wonder what anyone saw in this painfully antiquated material which is probably why Danish newcomer, Jonas Elmer, was selected to direct. He didn.t know any better. At the very least, Harry Connick Jr. makes an appealing romantic interest if only because he.s the only one in the film to undersell it . everyone else seems straight out of a failed sitcom. Plot is almost non-existent but what we get finds Lucy Hill (Zellweger), a high-level Miami corp. exec getting an assignment to...

Jonas Elmer tried to direct a hit comedy in which two worlds collide. But with New in Town, he merely bangs cliches together like a pair of irritatingly loud cymbals.

The plot: A Florida businesswoman's stay in a small Minnesota town changes for the better when she falls in love with the local labor union rep.
Our thoughts: In Jonas Elmer’s “New in Town,” Renee Zellweger plays Lucy Hill, a successful Miami consultant whose life takes a drastic turn when she’s sent to a small Minnesota town to oversee the restructuring of a manufacturing plant. New in Town
Starring Renée Zellweger, Harry Connick, Jr., and Siobhan Fallon Hogan
Directed by Jonas Elmer
Rated PG
Cutesy and corny but not convincing, New in Town treads old ground in a familiar way. There's nothing about it that you have to see, and shouldn't that be the point of all this? The movie is banking on one thing: You love Renée Zellweger. If you don't, there's no backup plan.
And Zellweger is a commodity of sorts, although not in the demand she was post-Bridget Jones, so it's understandable that a producer or a movie studio would want to build a movie around her. But shouldn't there be a movie as the final result?
New in Town is a very loose collection of points on a curve: A big city girl moves to a small town in Minnesota for work, isn't like everyone else, meets a guy, and...

Quickcard Review New in Town Directed by: Jonas Elmer Cast: Renée Zellweger, Harry Connick Jr., J.K. Simmons, Siobhan Fallon Running time: 1 hr. 40 mins. Rating: PG Plot: A Miami business woman (Zellweger) gets transferred to Minnesota to take care of the downsizing of a town plant. Through her struggles, she starts to identify with the town and falls for the local union rep. (Connick Jr.). Who's it For? People who love stereotypes of small townsfolk And big city people will feel right at home watching this mild romantic comedy. Yes, both the romance and the comedy is mild. Overall Remember Renée Zellweger? She proved she could do romance with Jerry Maguire, she proved she could dominate physical comedy with Bridget Jones and heck, she can even be Oscar-worthy with Cold Mountain. So why, Why? is she in...

The wintry New Ulm, Minnesota is the setting of the film .New in Town.. But this supposed warm romantic comedy left me cold like its arctic backdrop.
Renee Zelwegger stars as Lucy Hill, an ambitious female executive based in Miami. She.s trying desperately to climb the corporate ladder so when the opportunity arrives for her to ascend, she gladly takes it.
But that opportunity will make Lucy move from the warm Miami to the blistery cold New Ulm. What.s a tropical girl to do?
Written by Kenneth Rance and C. Jay Cox, the script is so steeped with Minnesota clichés that I felt bad for its inhabitants. All the residents talk like Frances McDormand.s character, Marge Gunderson, in .Fargo..
Incidentally, Lucy.s assistant in the film is named Blanche Gunderson (Siobhan Fallon Hogan). Is this the filmmakers. homage to the far better .Fargo?...

The long, slow, soul-crushing stagger towards the Oscars starts this week with many of the nominated prestige pictures that came out three months ago getting back into the spotlight after the flurry of Sundance attention has thawed. Meanwhile, the remake machine cranks out another Asian-inspired chiller, Bollywood goes meta, and Liam Neeson kicks some serious ass.

Given the Hollywood prestige crowd's endless fascination with all things Holocaust, it is unfathomable how the remarkable story of Hannah Senesh remains largely untold. Hailed in her homeland as a modern-day Joan of Arc, the then-20-year-old poet said goodbye to her privileged, middle-class upbringing and enlisted as a paramilitary soldier who volunteered to be part of a unit dropped into Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia in a daring bid to free captive Jews. "New in Town" will be available to be seen by the entire family. On Tuesday, January 20, Lionsgate and Gold Circle Films announced that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has toned down the rating of the romantic comedy from Danish film director Jonas Elmer from PG-13 to PG.
The new rating was given by the MPAA after the Lionsgate and Gold Circle Films mutually agreed to cut out the scenes with profanity. In a statement from both studios, the decision to delete strong language was taken to make the film "accessible and acceptable to the entire family", especially since it "has received strong early word-of-mouth from family-friendly audiences".

Renée Zellweger gets her cold on in Jonas Elmer's romantic comedy "New in Town," for which you can check out the new trailer right after the jump.
In the film, Zellweger plays a businesswoman from Miami who's sent to a cold town in Minnesota to oversee a new project.
But while the adjustment to the new temperatures prove to be a tough task, her heart slowly warms up for a local resident played by Harry Connick Jr.
Sometimes a trailer makes it difficult to get a clear first impression of a movie, and I'm not quite sure what to think of "New in Town." It looks a little silly at this point, but knows... Zellweger certainly has solid charm.
Watch out for "Town" Jan. 30, 2009.
