Following the recent votes by VFX workers at Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel to unionize with IATSE, a call for collective bargaining received enthusiastic applause during an intimate Visual Effects Society Honors ceremony and reception Friday at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center.
Referencing the SAG-AFTRA strike and recently ended WGA strike, honoree Bob Coleman, a veteran VFX artist agent and exec, said “a lot of damage has been done, but progress has been made for those two guilds. But the artists in this room and artists all around the world have not fared so well without collective bargaining. And without collective bargaining, there will be no progress for them.” He added, “I believe this is one of the greatest inequities in our industry, and I hope this inequity can be righted.”

Most of those who have earned the honor of Ves Fellow in the past decade have been recognized by the Visual Effects Society for on-screen innovation. But this year’s honoree, Susan Zwerman, is equally distinguished by her off-screen accomplishments. Zwerman is the studio executive producer for Exceptional Minds, a visual effects and animation school for young adults on the autism spectrum and a studio that employs those artists on projects ranging from “Game of Thrones” to Marvel Studios blockbusters.
“I encourage many young adults on the spectrum to go into visual effects and animation,” says Zwerman, an industry veteran of more than 40 years. “It’s a nice challenge, and I feel they live up to it.”
The org will recognize Zwerman, Neil Corbould and Harrison Ellenshaw as this year’s Ves Fellows — a title granted for exceptional achievements and sustained contributions to the art, science or business of visual effects — in a ceremony Oct.

The “Star Wars” franchise has always been about balancing the past with the future, bolstered by the cutting edge tech at Industrial Light & Magic under the leadership of George Lucas and beyond. To celebrate 40 years of “Star Wars” VFX wizardry, and in anticipation of J.J. Abrams’ climactic Episode 9, “The Rise of Skywalker” (December 20), and the launch of Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian” series on Disney+ (November 12), franchise luminaries gathered Thursday night at the Academy to discuss the analog to digital transformation.

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. Nowadays, it’s no big deal to see computer animation in films. In fact, the use of CGI in films can range from being mundane to being annoying. However, three decades ago, computer animation was in its infancy, and one of the biggest pioneers of its use in major motion pictures was Tron from Walt Disney Studios. Tron’s legacy led to the development and release of its sequel Tron: Legacy two years ago from Joseph Kosinski, and now the release of Kosinski’s latest film Oblivion. However, without the original Tron, we might not have the use of virtual environments that moviegoers are used to now. Today, comic book fans may recall Warren Beatty’s adaptation of Dick Tracy as a memorable misfire. When it was released in 1990, it was met with, at best, mixed reviews and while it performed respectably at the box office, missed Walt Disney’s estimates so the hoped for franchise was stillborn. Blame could be squarely placed at Beatty’s feet since he had a strangle hold on the film as its director, producer, and star. It got so crazy that poor Kyle Baker had to use only three approved head shots for the 64-page comics adaptation, which stretched even his considerable skills.

The art of the glass shot or matte painting is one which originated very much in the early ‘teens’ of the silent era. Pioneer film maker, director, cameraman and visual effects inventor Norman Dawn is generally acknowledged as the father of the painted matte composite, with other visionary film makers such as Ferdinand Pinney Earle, Walter Hall and Walter Percy Day being heralded as making vast contributions to the trick process in the early 1920’s.
Boiled down, the matte process is one whereby a limited film set may be extended to whatever, or wherever the director’s imagination dictates with the employment of a matte artist. In it’s most pure form, the artist would set up a large plate of clear glass in front of the motion picture camera upon which he would carefully paint in new scenery an ornate period ceiling, snow capped mountains, a Gothic castle or even an alien world.

I’m not entirely sure the use of the word “Classic” on the cover is entirely justified here, since Tron‘s popularity must surely be classed more as a cult thing than something of the mainstream. Judged by “traditional” factors for critique, it doesn’t exactly shine; the tone extremely camp and a little too self-consciously wierd, the script is full of problems and the pace is all over the place, but it still conjours up a tangible nostalgia that is as much indicative of the magic of cinema as real quality is.
In conjunction with the Blu-ray release of Tron Legacy, the original “classic” is now also available to buy on blu-ray.

We haven't yet embraced the 3D revolution here at CinemaSpy. Let's be honest, most of the movies released in the format don't benefit from it. Many were not filmed using 3D cameras so is it any wonder that they are underwhelming? Now Disney's Tron: Legacy has come to the Blu-ray market as the standard bearer for 3D entertainment in the home. In that respect, it steals a march on Avatar, which is only available on 3D Bd with a TV attached. But does Tron: Legacy do enough to sell us on 3D for small screens when we have yet to be convinced of the format's value on big ones?
Tron: Legacy is the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi semi-classic Tron. In the history of sci-fi cinema, Tron is hardly innovative in terms of its story. It stands out because it reflects a significant social development and it made ground-breaking use of computer graphics.

As computers were getting faster and significantly more sophisticated, some producer was going to be the first to have computers handle the special effects in a movie. As it turns out, Walt Disney, which pioneered feature-length animation, took the plunge in 1982 with Tron. The film, starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and David Warner, was visually stunning in its day as you felt immersed in the emerging video game world. The mediocre story took a backseat to the imaginative light cycle races and glowing disc battles. Audiences were intrigued, just enough to rake in $33 million at the box office for a $17 million production so it almost made money using the math of the time.

Another great documentary has gone online from visual effects supervisor Dennis Lowe (Alien, Neverending Story, Labyrinth, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer). Lowe has become a prolific and valuable documentarian of visual effects history, starting out with his Alien documentaries a couple of years back, and recently looking into the life and work of matte painter Leigh Took (Clash of the Titans, Batman, Neverending Story II, The Da Vinci Code).
