Listen closely: On “Principles,” the jarring penultimate track of Kim Gordon’s new solo album, The Collective, are the words she’s wailing “an actress of life”? Or is that last word “light” or “lies” or “live” or something else? The line transmits differently if you listen to it on a big stereo, expensive headphones, a beach speaker, shitty AirPods, and shittier iPhone speakers, since she’s buried it so deeply in atmospheric reverb and industrial clanging. You gotta open up your earholes. With vocals mixed so opaquely, listening to...

Exclusive: Just before the holiday break, Universal Pictures has found an exciting package under its tree. Sources tell Deadline that the studio has landed rights to the Christmas comedy Naughty, which has Olivia Wilde directing and LuckyChap producing. The package is based on a spec by Cocaine Bear scribe Jimmy Warden, and the auction saw several studios in the mix with Universal ultimately delivering the winning bid.
Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara are producing through their LuckyChap production company along with Wilde and Warden.
Described as Bridesmaids in the North Pole, the film follows Mallory, whose only hope of securing custody of her son from her gaslighting trash-bag ex is to find Santa Claus and convince him to testify in her divorce hearing.
Between LuckyChap’s recent success with the year’s biggest film in Barbie and Wilde being one of the more sought after female directors, Universal...

In 2009, I wrote a book about James Cameron called The Futurist, in which I detailed the Avatar and Titanic filmmaker’s complicated relationship with technology. Cameron has spent his career on the bleeding edge of science, from the visual effects he helped pioneer to the submersibles he designed and rode to the deepest points in the world’s oceans. But much of Cameron’s storytelling has been devoted to warning against technology’s dark potential, starting with 1984’s The Terminator, in which an artificially intelligent defense network known as Skynet becomes sentient and starts a war between humans and machines.
“It’s not the machines that will destroy us, it is ourselves,” Cameron told me when I interviewed him for The Futurist. “However, we will use the machines to do it.”

James Patterson, Margaret Atwood Among Thousands Of Writers Urging AI Companies To Honour Copyrights
James Patterson, Suzanne Collins and Margaret Atwood are among thousands of writers endorsing an open letter from the Authors Guild urging AI companies to obtain permission before incorporating copyrighted work into their technologies.
“Millions of copyrighted books, articles, essays, and poetry provide the ‘food’ for AI systems, endless meals for which there has been no bill,” the letter reads in part. “You’re spending billions of dollars to develop AI technology. It is only fair that you compensate us for using our writings, without which AI would be banal and extremely limited.”

The letter is addressed to OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft and other AI producers. The Guild announced Tuesday that other signers include the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelists Jennifer Egan, Michael Chabon and Louise Erdrich, as well as authors Jonathan Franzen, Celeste Ng, Nora Roberts and Ron Chernow.

As the writers strike continues to dominate Hollywood discourse, Ted Sarandos has exited a planned appearance at a Pen America event next week that was set to honor him.
The literary organization announced Wednesday that the Netflix co-ceo will no longer attend their annual gala to accept the Pen America Business Visionary Award. The event will still take place May 18 in New York as planned with Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost as host, and Lorne Michaels remains scheduled to participate as an honored guest.
“We admire Ted Sarandos’ singular work translating literature to artful presentation onscreen, and his stalwart defense of free expression and satire,” Pen America said in a statement. “As a writers organization, we have been following recent events closely and understand his decision.”

Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos will no longer attend a gala meant to honor him next week in New York. The decision comes as labor issues grab headlines across Hollywood.
Sarandos was set to accept the Business Visionary Award at the annual Pen American Spring Literary Gala, alongside fellow honoree Lorne Michaels and a host of literati including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Susan Choi, Jennifer Egan, Min Jin Lee, Jay McInerney and Gay Talese. He’s skipping the event, to be held under the blue whale at the American Museum of Natural History, as many industry celebrations weigh how to address the writers strike.
“Given the threat to disrupt this wonderful evening, I thought it was best to pull out so as not to distract from the important work that Pen America does for writers and journalists, as well as the celebration of my friend and personal hero Lorne Michaels. I hope...

Though she has an extensive TV CV, Olivia Wilde has so far restricted her directing work to films. That's set to change, as she has boarded a potential adaptation of Jennifer Egan's award-winning book A Visit From The Goon Squad.
The tome, which tends to defy easy definition, comprises a set of thirteen interrelated stories with a large set of characters all connected to Bennie Salazar, a record company executive, and his assistant, Sasha. The book centers on the mostly self-destructive characters of different ages who, as they grow older, are sent in unforeseen, and sometimes unusual, directions by life. The stories shift back and forth in time from the 1970s to the present and into the near future. And as for the "Goon Squad" of the title – that refers to time robbing characters of their youth.

A24 has optioned Jennifer Egan’s novel “A Visit from the Goon Squad” and its sequel “The Candy House” for a TV series, with Olivia Wilde attached to direct, a rep for the actress told TheWrap on Friday. The “Don’t Worry Darling” helmer will also executive produce with Jennifer Fox.

This would be Wilde’s first major project for television. “Don’t Worry Darling,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, earned nearly $90 million globally. The third weekend of February brings some fascinating exhibitions, some left-field film releases... and a cocaine-fuelled bear. Yep, you read that right.
But that’s not all that features in this week’s Arts Agenda, The Independent’s guide to the best cultural activities each and every weekend. Our team of critics and editors have selected a range of options from across the different spheres of culture: art, books, film, music, stage and TV.
Among the highlights are David Hockney’s new immersive experience at Lightroom (we’ve also got an exclusive interview with the man himself). TV editor Ellie Harrison talks about the return of ITV’s Unforgotten – sadly sans Nicola Walker – while film editor Adam White has found the perfect Netflix film to fill the Jennifer Coolidge-shaped hole in all our lives after The White Lotus. Arts editor Jessie Thompson, meanwhile, enthuses about Coco Mellors’ bingeable novel Cleopatra and Frankenstein,...

It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2022––another year in which he not only released a new film, but shot another––he still got plenty of watching in.
Along with catching up on 2022’s new releases, he took in plenty of classics, including Sorcerer, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Battle of Algiers, All That Jazz, and All About Eve. Quite intriguingly, he also watched cuts of David Fincher’s forthcoming The Killer four times over a week-long span in August. Ahead of a February release, he’s also watched cuts of his forthcoming Magic Mike’s Last Dance five times, the first time being only two months after shooting began.
See the list below via his official site.

After several lavish years, in which the bounty of big-name books became almost impossible to keep up with, publishing is finally catching up with itself. 2022 was arguably slower, and quieter, than its recent predecessors — there was no Sally Rooney to adorn tote bags all over Brooklyn, no Jonathan Franzen dominating the discourse. Instead of fighting over which blockbusters deserved their place at the very top, there was time and space for titles of all sorts to find a reading audience. Likely, no two “best of” lists will look alike this year, which means the glitch in the system may finally be repairing itself; the algorithm is weakening. Here, THR chooses its top 10 titles and a host of additional works we hope you’ll pick up.

Barack Obama has again shared his picks for the year’s best, including his favorite movies, music and books.
“I always look forward to sharing my lists of favorite books, movies, and music with all of you,” he wrote on Twitter, sharing his picks in each medium in three separate posts and asking his followers to share their own favorites with him: “What did I miss?”
In what is perhaps no surprise — and as any good husband should — the former president picked wife Michelle Obama’s memoir The Light We Carry as one of his favorite books. “I’m a little biased on this one,” he noted in his tweet.
Other favorites include Jennifer Egan’s The Candy House, Charmaine Wilkerson’s Black Cake and Imani Perry’s South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation.

“The Iron Lady” and “Shame” writer Abi Morgan has revealed she is battling breast cancer.
The 51-year-old British writer shared news of her diagnosis during a screening of the second season premiere of BBC One and Sundance TV drama “The Split,” which is produced by “Chernobyl” outfit Sister Pictures and Little Chick.
Highlighting that it has been a “very challenging 18 months,” Morgan said: “I got cancer during this period and I have been quite ill throughout it, so I should mention that this show has been really built as a team.
“What’s been amazing is to have the whole team really hold it, not only behind the screen in terms of the brilliance of (producer Jane Featherstone) and (executive producer Lucy Dyke) but as a company. What was wonderful was to feel how robust that family was and (how they were) able to take it as a group of actors and as an ensemble.

Pen America has filed a federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump, saying he has used the federal government “to retaliate or threaten reprisals against journalists and media outlets for coverage he dislikes,” the organization representing writers said Tuesday. The group singled out executive branch efforts to “punish and stifle” the Washington Post and Amazon (both owned by Jeff Bezos), CNN and Time Warner, and NBC.
The suit (read it here), filed in the U.S District Court’s Southern District of New York, claims Trump is violating the First Amendment right to freedom of speech and the press, and the First Amendment right to receive information. It seeks to enjoin Trump from “directing or ordering any officer, employee, agency, or other agent or instrumentality of the United States government to take any action against any person or entity with intent to retaliate against, intimidate, or otherwise constrain speech critical of him or his Administration.

Back in 2011, just a day after it won the Pulitzer, Jennifer Egan's A Visit From the Goon Squad was optioned for development by HBO. Now two years later, with no series to be seen, Sundance is reportedly in talks to pick up where HBO left off. Will the book be any more filmable than it was two years ago? Because even back then, people were unconvinced it could be properly adapted: "I don’t envy them the job, I’ll tell you that," Egan even told the New York Times' David Itzkoff shortly after the HBO deal was first announced.

20th Century Fox TV’s cable division Fox 21 has made a first-look deal with Michael London‘s Groundswell Prods. Under the pact, London will develop and produce projects targeted for cable alongside Groundswell President of Production Janice Williams and Director of Development Shary Shirazi. This represents a rare pod deal with a non-writing producer for Fox 21, which reached out to London after finding out that the Sideways Oscar nominee was interested in a TV studio deal. “He is a perfect example of what we try to do here,” Fox 21 president Bert Salke said. “As a producer, he has a phenomenal taste and works with the best writers, creators and directors in town while maintaining a status of being cutting edge, eager and hungry.” Groundswell is in production on the Amazon comedy pilot Betas — which was picked up to series — and has sold three broadcast projects this season:...

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jennifer Egan is not new to innovation in fiction. In her novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, which won the 49-year-old author the prestigious writing award in 2001, Egan used unusual methods to tell a story with one chapter being written like PowerPoint slides. In an apology to her twitter followers, who were recent victims of spam through her twitter account, Egan decided to reveal her new short story, “Black Box” one tweet at a time....

Peter Weir, the director of films such as Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Truman Show and Dead Poets Society is set to direct a contemporary gothic thriller called The Keep, which is based on the 2006 novel written by Jennifer Egan. The story is set in a mysterious medieval castle somewhere in Central Europe, and it follows "two estranged American cousins who reunite to set up an alternative resort, stirring childhood traumas and phobias in a haunted castle."
Weir is also writing the screenplay for the movie which has a budget of around $30 million dollars. Weir has made some great films in his career and I think this will be a cool project for him to work on.

Peter Weir (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Truman Show) will direct the contemporary gothic thriller The Keep, reports Variety. The film is based on Jennifer Egan's 2006 best-seller, which is described as follows:
Award-winning author Jennifer Egan brilliantly conjures a world from which escape is impossible and where the keep –the tower, the last stand –is both everything worth protecting and the very thing that must be surrendered in order to survive.

Although his last effort, 2010′s The Way Back, was perhaps one of his lesser accomplishments, we’re always anticipating the next project from Peter Weir. Considering the scope of that film, which largely failed at the box office, we thought it may be some time before we see another feature from the man who gave us Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Truman Show and Dead Poets Society. Thankfully, such is not the case as Variety has news on his next project.
Weir has announced his upcoming film, an adaptation of Jennifer Egan‘s novel, which is described as a “contemporary gothic thriller.” Unrelated to Michael Mann‘s film of the same name, this film follows two cousin who set out to renovate a European medieval castle. Set along this eerie backdrop, supernatural happenings begin to unfold in the script Weir will adapt himself. It’ll...

How’s this for weird coincidences and a case of unlikely precognition? Almost exactly two years ago (give or take a couple of weeks), we talked about original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev eyeing an adaptation of Jennifer Egan’s 2006 book The Keep as his English language debut. Given how that the book had already been in development since 2008, we said then, “Hopefully it won't be two years before the next update.” Welcome to now! Oplev is no longer attached, but Master And Commander's Peter Weir appears to be the man for the task. The Keep, which Weir is adapting himself, finds two estranged American cousins trying to restore their relationship by teaming up to renovate a spooky gothic castle in Central Europe. But the task ends up tearing open an old wound, dredging up a family tragedy from their childhood and bringing the issues associated...

With his last effort, the ambitious road film "The Way Back," largely coming and going, we were dreading another long absence from veteran helmer Peter Weir. After all, he's only made two films in the last decade, with a seven-year gap between his 2010 effort and "Master And Commander" back in 2003. Thankfully, though, it looks like the wait won't be as long this time around, as a new project has been lined up by the Australian director.
Weir has signed up to adapt "A Visit From The Goon Squad" author Jennifer Egan's best-selling contemporary gothic thriller "The Keep," which previously had CBS Films teaming with 'Dragon Tattoo' helmer Niels Arden Oplev. That iteration of the project, which was scripted by Ehren Kruger, had been described as "'The Ring' meets 'Inception'" but with Weir tackling the screenplay himself, we imagine he's starting from scratch with a very different take in mind.

On Tuesday, HBO made two announcements in the realm of acquisitions. The network said it would be producing "True Detective," a crime series based on the hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana starring Matthew McConnaughey and Woody Harrelson. It also confirmed reports it was passing on the pilot for Jonathan Franzen and Noah Baumbach's adaptation of Franzen's novel "The Corrections," which starred Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal and was being produced by Scott Rudin.
It's tempting to interpret the twin announcements as evidence of HBO's broader plans. A sign, perhaps, that the smash success of its two highest-performing shows, "True Blood" and "Game of Thrones," has convinced the network that the path to success is the lurid, fantastical one favored by hormonal young men.
Time will tell. But for now, there's no reason to ring the alarm bells, cancel your subscriptions and sign up for Showtime in anticipation...
