Orson Welles claimed that his career was greatly influenced by Edwards, whom he regarded as one of his closest friends. This was not surprising, as Welles got his professional start in acting at the Gate Theatre in Dublin (in 1931), which Edwards co-founded and ran. Many years later, Welles starred in the one film Edwards directed. "Return To Glennascaul".
