“Pirates of the Caribbean” sets sail for one more adventure at sea, in what is being hinted to be the final chapter in the franchise, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The result is mixed, with the good being Javier Bardem and Geoffrey Rush as villains, great visual effects, and a nice, satisfying ending. The bad being having to endure an over-long, nonsensical plot with sporadic moments of entertainment to get there.
Ok, everyone has a guilty pleasure, and mine might be pirates. As a fan of all things pirate, including silly pirate movies, it was a delight when the first Pirates Of The Caribbean, Disney’s attempt to turn an amusement park ride into a movie,...

Ah, Pirates of the Caribbean. The plucky blockbuster franchise that spawned from a Disneyland ride in 2003 is a teenager now, fourteen years old and emerging from its bedroom with a surly expression for more high-sea hijinks. Set nineteen years after the events of the 2011 film On Stranger Tides, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (or Dead Man Tell No Tales if you prefer the post-Colonial title) is the fifth installment in the series – and the way Hollywood is going, we should all be grateful it’s not a reboot.
Instead, the story picks up with Henry Turner, the son of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) attempting to find the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp, reprising arguably his most famous role) so he can break the curse that has condemned his father to the sea. He’s not the only one looking for...

The girl group union between Valencia, Heather, and Becks doesn't work for me.
Their friendship came together wrapped up with a bow too quickly, and additionally, I still don't buy that Rebecca and Valencia could bury all of their baggage with Josh over one weekend and completely move beyond it – and move in together. (A murder house?!)

Another Marvel Universe villain is set to appear in Anthony and Joe Russo's Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Latino Review reports that Ufc Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre will be playing French kickboxing master Georges Batroc, Aka Batroc the Leaper. With origins dating all the way back to 1966's "Tales of Suspense" #75, Batroc doesn't have any superhuman abilities beyond his mastery of martial arts. While he's primarily a Cap foe, he's appeared throughout the Marvel Universe and done battle with the likes of Spider-Man, the Punisher, Iron Fist and many more. St-Pierre, who hails from Quebec, has previously appeared in the martial arts films Death Warrior and Never Surrender , both directed by Hector Echavarria. Also set to star Chris Evans,...

“You're moving to New York?!” I shrieked, startling the woman next to me on the corner fishing through the garbage for newspapers.
“You got it,” Jessie, my best friend in the whole world, replied. I had last seen her a couple of months ago at her place in Arizona, but she had somehow failed to mention anything about plans to move to my very own slice of New Amsterdam. “I'll be a New Yorker in a week. I'm thinking I should start practicing spitting and talking to myself as I shuffle down 8th Avenue now.”
“But how? Why? I mean, I'm ricockulously stoked, but how is this happening?”
“Well, you remember that dream I had of going to law school? It is now officially a reality.”
“But you didn't even tell me you were applying!”
“I didn't tell anyone. I didn't want to jinx it.”
“Well, aren't you a rascal?...

HollywoodNews.com: My issue with “The Fighter” is that it looks like the kind of low-end Mma fight melodrama that Tapout puts out a few times a year. Take away the big stars and director David O.Russell, and it’s just another movie from the people who brought you “Circle of Pain,” “Unrivaled,” or “Beatdown” (I have to watch this stuff for work related reasons). For that matter, Mark Wahlberg isn’t that much better of an actor than the likes of Hector Echavarria or Tony Schiena. I’ve long believed that Donnie Wahlberg is the far superior, far more natural and credible performer of the two.

Director Warren P. Sonoda's film about an amateur cage fighter who gets a shot at the big time is stylishly filmed and has plenty of action in the form of impressively staged brutal fight scenes. The first half of the screenplay, however, too often favors naked pole dancers over meaty drama and has scenes that feel like they have been drawn out to fit the music. The result is a film that, clichéd plot notwithstanding, feels like it could have been much better.
As it is, Unrivaled keeps your attention without triggering much of an emotional response. Hector Echavarria creates a sympathetic loser-turned-hero in Ringo Duran, while Nicholas Campbell (the Da Vinci in Da Vinci's Inquest and Da Vinci's City Hall) gives his usual standout performance, this time as a grizzled trainer, a.la. Burgess Meredith in Rocky.

I am admittedly predisposed to moaning with remorse whenever a new film sponsored by a fighting organization makes its way to JustPressPlay's doorstep. Whether it's on DVD or Blu-ray rarely ever makes a difference, as they're often little more than circle jerks made to capitalize on the built-in audience of fighting fans who will consume anything as long as the scenes of controlled violence are brutal and offer up a few “did you see that?!” moments. For that reason, I rue these films. Unrivaled makes me reconsider that notion or, at the very least, amend it. This film, presented quite well in high-definition, spends as much time building on plot and character as it does in the ring with fists flying.
Ringo Duran (Hector Echavarria) has become known as a perennial loser, a fighter far past his prime. However, it's an undeserved title as the film's opening fight shows that...

I know that as a reviewer, I’m supposed to maintain some degree of objectivity and not bring my own prejudices into what I watch, but let’s be honest for a moment: there’s no way that you can watch an Mma film on purpose and not know that it’s going to suck more than a little. I mean, seriously. I like seeing guys pummel each other as much as the next guy, but this is the second one that I’ve watched (the first being Never Surrender), and the feeling that they had made the film as a kind of endurance test was just as strong with this film as it was with that one.

Another exclusive video fresh from the set of Mma-powered movie ‘Unrivaled‘ shooting Toronto. This clip features the big, bald (& occasionally mean) Keith Jardine in a variety of scenes and on-set banter.
First off, Jardine messes with his stunt double Julian Lewis, then acts in a choreographed fight against Hector Echavarria, and also chats about his character and real-life friendship with Rashad Evans. Director Warren P. Sonoda shares some comments about working with Jardine pointing out his hard work and effort on set. Finally Jardine mentions his enthusiasm for indie film and the art of film and points out flaws in his stunt double’s hair-do.

MovieSet continues the coverage of ‘Unrivaled‘ with this interview with Al Sapienza who plays Sergio. In this interview he explains that he learned to act in prison of all places - which gets some laughs. He says he likes to plays gangster “light and fun,” and “charming and funny” “because that’s what they are really like.”
He comments that Director Warren Sonoda is passionate and a very good filmmaker and that Hector’s character Ringo “is likeable” and the story reminds him of modern day Rocky.

As the DVD artwork proudly proclaims, “Never Surrender” stars “the world’s top Mma fighters in their first feature film!” In addition to kickboxing champion Hector Echavarria, who not only wrote and directed, but also stars as the lead, the film boasts the presence of professional fighters with names like “Rampage”, “The Spider”, “The Prodigy”, and “The Texas Crazy Horse”. If these names mean anything to you, then “Never Surrender” might be worth a rental. Sadly, my only exposure to the world of mixed martial arts is when I flip past Ufc matches on Spike TV, so I’m definitely at a disadvantage going into this. Echavarria plays Diego Carter, an up and coming martial arts fighter (you weren’t expecting him to play a neurosurgeon, were you?). If the behind the scenes documentaries on the DVD of Never Surrender are to be believed (and they Always are), this film was meant to be a major break-through for the world of mixed-martial arts. What is mixed martial arts, you’re probably not asking? If the plot of this film is any indication, it’s a place for really insecure guys to try and prove they’re not gay by taking their shirts off and wrestling each other. In a sense, this movie is the blood brother of Troy, a film so terrified of appealing to anyone but manly straight men that it is absolutely hilarious to everyone else. Except that you get the joke in the first ten minutes, and then there’s the whole rest of the movie to sit through.

Thanks to the Ufc, the sport of mixed martial arts is pretty huge right now, as evidenced by the number of Hollywood movies that star Mma fighters or involve Mma in some way. Movies like Never Back Down, Redbelt and the upcoming Fighting have been marketing themselves partially based on the fighting style, while action movies like The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior have started casting Mma fighters as the new b-movie stars. This month, Lionsgate is upping the ante with a direct-to-dvd movie called Never Surrender that stars a number of big name Mma fighters including Georges St. Pierre, Hector Echavarria, Anderson Silva and B.J. Penn. The plot revolves around an Mma world champion who gets lured into the illegal world of underground cage fighting in pursuit of vengeance for the death of his brother. The movie was written and directed by Hector Echavarria himself, so it...

You know what’s more ultimate than Ultimate Fighting? More extreme than Extreme Championship Wrestling? Pit fighting! Instead of a nice, clean ring or a shiny steel Octagon, pit fighters just kick the crap out of each other in a sweaty hole. When ex-con Eddie Castillo’s younger brother gets all mixed up in the dirty world of pit fighting, he winds up dead in the ring at the hands of the fearsome Matador, played by real-life fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. It’s up to Eddie (played by Hector Echavarria) to get into the pit himself and avenge his brother’s death. The “Confession” part of the title comes from the B-plot where Eddie wrestles with his Catholic faith - after all, doesn’t Jesus say “turn the other cheek?”...

This was the premiere of Parasomnia and the Director Bill Malone (Fear.com, House on Haunted Hill) was present to tell us that the inspiration for his movie came as he was watching the Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920). Also eating popcorn were cast members Dylan Purcell, Cherilyn Wilson, Patrick Kilpartrick, Jeffrey Combs, Timothy Bottoms and Cinematographer Christian Sebaldt. Parasomnia is a Sleeping Beauty legend reinvention with dashes of Beetlejuice and Pan's Labyrinth. Despite a fine performance from Patrick Kilpatrick as the evil hypnotist, Dr Volpe ( a performance so good, I little bird tells me it got him picked up for the new Mixed Martial Arts project by the Argentinean fight man Hector Echavarria), and some very stylish camera work, the film as a whole is somewhat patchy in the story and the character development department.
