We know Kendrick Lamar and Drake will throw more shots, levy more seedy allegations, and might even drop more all-out diss songs from here. But the bulk of the war has been fought, and the crown goes to Compton. In hindsight, the way Drake poked the bear with Instagram Stories provocations and his “Taylor Made” freestyle seems masochistic. Over the past week, Lamar hit Drake with a relentless volley of diss songs that comprehensively dismantled his opponent’s character and, with “Not Like Us,” may make him the punchline of the summer.

Exclusive: After announcing new docs on NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount and MLB icon Tommy John in Whatever It Takes and The Bionic Man, respectively, Winter State Entertainment has unveiled The Hitman: A Tommy Hearns Story as its latest sports documentary.
The boxing pic directed by Winter State principals Hamid and Camille Torabpour, which wrapped production prior to the strikes, spotlights Tommy ‘The Hitman’ Hearns, the legendary Detroit fighter who, between 1977 and 2006, won titles in five different weight divisions.
Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the summer of 2012, Hearns is known for displaying one of the most devastating punches in the history of the sport and for not being afraid to mix it up, sometimes to his own detriment. The film from the Torabpours will look in depth at both his illustrious boxing career and his broader life journey, including his initial decision to enter the...

"Rocky" has endured as one of the most uplifting sports films of all time thanks in large part to its heartfelt portrayal of two social misfits falling haltingly in love as one of them trains for an unlikely, yet plausible shot at the heavyweight boxing title. Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire give lovely, lived-in performances that are painful to watch at times because Rocky has no idea how awkwardly his gregariousness lands, while Adrian seems terrified that anyone would find her worthy of affection.
For most of its runtime, "Rocky" is a human drama about losers. It soars to life during its Bill Conti-scored training montage that explodes the film into its exhilarating third act. Interestingly, the final match isn't all that long. From the opening bell to the end of the fifteenth round, it occupies a scant eight-and-a-half minutes of screen time. Cuban star Ana de Armas made waves with her controversial take on Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel about the late star. De Armas’ endlessly emotive performance makes an interesting contrast to London-born Eddie Redmayne, tightly controlled in “The Good Nurse,” as serial murderer Charles Cullen, whose crimes eventually raise the suspicions of the film’s title character, Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain). In conversation, de Armas and Redmayne rave about each other’s work — an especially meaningful compliment for de Armas, as Redmayne knows his Monroe: He starred opposite Michelle Williams in 2011’s “My Week With Marilyn.”
Ana De Armas: I’ve been a big admirer of yours for a long time. I remember going to the premiere of “The Danish Girl.”

Russell Hornsby has been cast as Don King in the upcoming Hulu limited series about Mike Tyson, “Iron Mike,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Hornsby joins previously announced series lead Trevante Rhodes, who will play Tyson. The series is said to be an exploration of the wild, tragic and controversial life and career of Tyson, one of the most polarizing figures in sports culture. Production on the eight-episode series is currently underway.
The King character is described as ruthlessly ambitious with a flashy personality. He is a notorious boxing promoter that takes Tyson’s boxing career to the next level. He’s a businessman; strategic, resilient, knowing how to work everything in his favor. However, much of his arrogance might be hiding a deeper vulnerability. While others may focus on the little details, King has his eyes on the prize – always thinking of the bigger picture.

Four high-impact boxers — Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns — will re-enter the limelight in Showtime docuseries The Kings.
The first of the show’s four episodes will premiere on Sunday, June 6, at 8Pm Et/Pt on linear and streaming, the ViacomCBS premium network announced.
Nicknamed the Four Kings during their remarkable, overlapping careers, the quartet contested nine championship fights among them from 1980 to 1989. Their distinct styles and vivid personalities helped spark a renaissance in the sport of boxing, which had endured a downturn after Muhammad Ali’s storybook run concluded.
The backdrop of the series is the 1980s, a go-go decade marked by pronounced socioeconomic and political upheaval in the U.S. as President Ronald Reagan left his mark.
Hagler died last month at age 66.

Edgar Ramírez has signed on to star opposite Jessica Chastain in Lucía Puenzo’s upcoming independent drama “Losing Clementine.”
The film is based on the 2012 novel by Ashley Ream, as adapted by screenwriter Ann Cherkis (“Better Call Saul”). The project was first unveiled during the 2019 American Film Market.
Chastain will portray the bipolar Clementine who decides to commit suicide with her 36th birthday rapidly approaching. After flushing away her meds, she gives herself 30 days to tie up loose ends—to finish one last painting, make nice with her ex-husband, and find a new home for her cat. But, she then uncovers secrets about her family and the tragedy that befell her mother and sister. Ramírez will play the role of Richard, the ex-husband of Clementine and her true love.
Sentient’s Renee Tab, who acquired the book in 2018 and hired Cherkis, will produce with her partner Christopher Tuffin alongside Freckle Films’ Chastain and Kelly Carmichael.

Many indie and arthouse titles do day and date releases and are VOD-only so the transition, for the most part, is familiar territory for many distributors and production companies.

Let’s return to the ring once more for another true life tale of triumph and tragedy all set in the world of the “sweet science”. Almost a year ago movie audiences were cheering on a re-invention of the fiction franchise began by Rocky with the spin-off Creed. And just a few months ago we watched the rags to riches to rags true tale of Roberto Duran in Hands Of Stone. Now, or should I say, “…and in this corner”, is the saga of Vinnie Pazienza, a scrappy young fighter from a working class East Coast neighborhood. Ah, but he’s not just fighting other contenders. No, his story mixes the standard sports flick with the “struggling against a devastating medical crisis” drama. It’s a story so incredible that it has to be true (who could make it up?), as Vinnie shows the world that to defy the odds...

Miles Teller proves himself a champ by going all 12 rounds as Vinny "The Pazmanian Devil" Pazienza, the Rhode Island boxer who competed in three different weight classes – only to face the fight of his life after breaking his neck in a car accident and being told to hang up the gloves. That hyperbolic plot summary suggests a minefield of Hollywood clichés, and to be sure, Bleed for This sometimes bleeds right into them. But writer-director Ben Younger (Boiler Room, Prime) has a way of punching his way out of tight corners.

It’s to the credit of the boxing picture “Bleed For This” that it goes nine, ten, or maybe even 11 rounds before it’s clear just which way the final decision is going to go. That’s not a reference to the outcome of the movie’s climactic 1990s match between Miles Teller’s real-life Vinny Paz character and Roberto Duran, but rather the movie’s own bout between its better instincts and the need to wrap up on the most simplistically crowd-pleasing note possible.

Matthew McConaughey is eyeing up his second Oscar. Starring in “Gold” as Kenny Wells, a man who went from pawning his wife’s jewelry to striking one of the century’s largest gold mines in the middle of the Indonesian jungle, McConaughey looks to be delivering the singular mix of high energy and pensive brooding he mastered in past projects like “Dallas Buyers Club” and “True Detective.” Helmed by Oscar-winning director-writer Stephen Gaghan and co-starring Edgar Ramírez as a geologist, Corey Stoll as a Wall Street suit, and Bryce Dallas Howard as McConaughey’s onscreen wife, the film, which is based on a true story, looks to be an exciting addition to the still fuzzy Oscar race. “Gold” is due out in theaters Oct. 15 and comes on the heels of Ramírez’s first mainstream film role as boxer Roberto Duran in “Hands of Stone.” Considering his turn in another Oscar contender,...

I've added the update for this story at the end.
Original Column:
Today something significant will be happening. Today, people can prove me wrong about something I've been saying for years.
But I don't think they will.
See, today, Hands Of Stone will go wide. It'll jump from 810 theaters to around 2,000, with the hope of a big Labor Day Weekend payoff in a few days.
It centers on the legendary Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, has a stellar cast, and comes from a time in history that's so recent that the film's central figure is still alive today. For advocates of diversity, you have the talented Edgar Ramirez starring as Duran, you have pop music megastar Usher Raymond as the iconic pugilist "Sugar" Ray Leonard, and a supporting cast littered with hispanic performers like Rubén Blades, Ana de Armas, and Yancey Arias.
The production is rounded out by the "Raging Bull" himself Robert De Niro,...

Labor Day Weekend is the bastard stepchild of holidays, and this weekend promises a dispiriting reception for two new, lower-budget studio releases. “The Light Between Oceans” (Disney) and “Morgan” (20th Century Fox) will each struggle to do even $10 million this weekend. However, Sony’s surprisingly strong horror thriller “Don’t Breathe” looks to repeat at No. 1 — a rare achievement in the genre.
For both films, choosing this date represents the “what have we got to lose?” strategy. Neither “Oceans” nor “Morgan” will open in more than 2,000 theaters; unless they over-perform, the three-day weekend has a good chance of being the weakest of 2016. Last year’s Friday-to-Sunday saw $60 million; the mark to beat this year is $76 million (Super Bowl Weekend in early February, normally a dead zone).

Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Roberto Duran is definitely one of the greatest boxing legends who stepped into the ring.
From director Jonathan Jakubowicz, Hands Of Stone follows the life story of the Panamanian professional boxer known for his devastating punching power to earn the nickname “Manos de Piedra.”
The story follows the boxer growing up in Panama and training at a young early age. He falls in love with a young woman and later adopts a well-known boxing training in New York City for the next stages of boxing championships and greatness. The movie also shows the building rivalry between himself and Sugar Ray Leonard to the ultimate showdown at the No Mas Fight.
Lrm had a sit-down interview with Jonathan Jakubowicz at a press day in Beverly Hills earlier this month. He talked about Roberto Duran, his two actors’ transformations of Edgar Ramirez and Usher Raymond III, and creating Latino hero movies.

Robert De Niro’s presence in the new Roberto Duran boxing bio Hands Of Stone only served to remind me how inferior this picture is to many other films revolving around the sport including Martin Scorsese’s 1980 classic Raging Bull, which won De Niro an Oscar for his immortal portrayal of Jake La Motta. As the Summer starts to fade, the multiplex looks again to sports films, those (like the “sport” of movie viewing) which are set indoors, away from the harsh cold winds. We’re not talking hockey or basketball, but rather the “mano y mano” battle that seems almost tailor-made for movies, boxing. Of course, there are many times when the boxing flick has been mixed with other genres. Just last year we had a boxing/ family tear-jerker with Southpaw and a boxing/ fantasy/ franchise-reboot Creed (it squeezed a few tears from audiences, too). This time out (perhaps to be an early Oscar contender), we’re seeing a pugilistic biography, a mix that goes back to the dawn of cinema. The 1940’s had Gentleman Jim, and the 50’s had Paul Newman as Rocky Marciano in Somebody Up There Likes Me. The greatest true-life boxing biopic may be 1980’s Raging Bull with an Oscar-winning turn by Robert DeNiro.

For more than three decades after Raging Bull was released in 1980, Robert De Niro wisely stayed away from the boxing world on screen. After all, once you've appeared in one of the most spellbinding and spiritually troubling cinematic experiences of all time -- and won an Academy Award for your performance -- why tempt fate? For whatever reason, De Niro agreed to star in 2013's Grudge Match, which was more of an attempt at comedy than anything else, and now he has taken a supporting role in Hands of Stone, a biographical drama about real-life Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, essayed by Edgar Ramirez. De Niro portrays retired trainer Ray Arcel, who worked with many notable fighters before being forced into retirement by the New...

It’s the dog days of summer. This last weekend in August’s box office will top last year’s meagre $63 million. But if it squeaks past February’s Superbowl Weekend take ($74 million)—the worst weekend of the year so far—it won’t be new openers driving the numbers.

Boxing movies — the classic Raging Bull excepted — tend to punch the same way: Underdog hits it big, then blows it before launching a comeback. From Rocky to Creed, that's been the drill. Hands of Stone, the true story of 1970's lightweight champ Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), never strays far from the path. But the Venezuelan-born writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz (Secuestro Express) knows how to muscle up momentum and bring the best out of actors.
Ramirez (Carlos) excels as Duran, the natural street brawler from Panama whose hot temper often gets the best of him.

With enough color, heart, triumph, and controversy to match any champion boxer’s life story, Panama’s legendary Roberto Duran certainly deserves a movie that does justice to all his career ups and downs. Unfortunately, the new biopic “Hands of Stone” — named for the thunder-fisted fighter’s mythic sobriquet, and starring Edgar Ramírez as Duran — is too often content to play like a lot of other boxing flicks instead of forging its own path. It’s slick and watchable enough to where you may never get around to saying “¡No mas!” — the bout-quitting utterance that ended Duran’s 1980 rematch with Sugar.

2016-08-23T07:25:01-07:00New Movies August 26: 'Don't Breathe' and 'Mechanic'
This weekend is officially the final weekend of the summer movie season, and the slate of new releases for the week makes it clear that Hollywood's summertime party is over. The week's three new movies include a low-budget horror flick, an obscure action movie sequel, and a modest sports biopic.
The first of the week's new releases, and the new movie expected to draw the biggest crowds over the weekend, is the horror film Don't Breathe. This one concerns three young thieves who break into the house of a blind man for an easy score. Much to their horror, they discover that their victim isn't nearly as helpless as they'd assume, and they end up fighting for their lives in the dark. The film stars Stephen Lang (Avatar), Jane Levy (Evil Dead) and Dylan Minnette...

"When you come into the ring, you come to fight. No to dance, or to clown..." The Weinstein Company has debuted a last minute red band trailer for Jonathan Jakubowicz's Hands of Stone, which opens in theaters next weekend. The film stars Edgar Ramirez as famous Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, preparing to fight against the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard, played by Usher Raymond. This trailer spends as much time on Sugar Ray as it does on Duran, and the only reason it's red band is because they've tossed in a few sex scenes in hopes of making a few more people interested in this. Since, unfortunately, this seems like this year's boxing movie that is going to be quickly forgotten (unlike, perhaps, Bleed For This but who knows). The performances look solid, but the rest of it seems so by-the-numbers. Even with Robert De Niro in it. Here's the...

The Weinstein Company has today cast light on the latest trailer for Jonathan Jakubowicz’s sports biopic Hands of Stone, and it opens just as you would expect – sweeping crowds shots followed by a montage of two fighters preparing to step into the ring.
The press conferences, the intense workouts, the experienced coach (Robert De Niro, in this case) – it’s all there. But perhaps in an effort to spike interest in Hands of Stone, the snippet veers directly into R-rated territory, first introducing Roberto Durán (Édgar Ramirez) and Felicidad Iglesias (Ana de Armas) going at it like rabbits before shifting focus to the bedroom antics of Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher) and Juanita (Jurnee Smollett-Bell).
It’s a little abrupt, to say the least, and we’re worried today’s decidedly Nsfw trailer is a last-ditch attempt from The Weinstein Company to fire Hands of Stone into the spotlight. Hopefully we’re way off base,...

I’m seeing a strange pattern here. Both Robert De Niro And Sylvester Stallone took up the boxing gloves again for Grudge Match, then Sly took on the trainer role in Creed. Now the one time Jake La Motta is following suit with Hands of Stone, playing the real life boxing trainer Ray Arcel as he trains Panamanian fighter Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), telling the story of Duran’s 1980 title bout with Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) Written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz (Secuestro Express), Hands of Stone promises to be everything a good boxing movie should be: tense, exciting, nail biting, and above all else, a compelling under dog story. On top of that, De Niro appears to be on top form, and after the dire Dirty Grandpa, we need to believe in him again. Released: 26th August (U.S.)/ ? (Irl/U.K.)...

Last year, it was Southpaw and the rather excellent Creed that enthralled the moviegoing masses, but 2016 is cooking up a one-two punch of its own. Before Miles Teller learns to Bleed For This in November, it is Edgar Ramirez who will step into the ring for Hands of Stone, The Weinstein Company’s starry biopic that finds Robert De Niro in the role of accomplished trainer, Ray Arcel.
De Niro, who so brilliantly captured the imagination of a generation in Raging Bull, will find himself on the other side of the ropes in Jonathan Jakubowicz’s feature. It’s one he wrote and directed, too, chronicling the inspired journey of Panamanian boxer, Roberto Durån.
Celebrated as one of the finest fighters the sport has ever produced, Edgar Ramirez will don the boxing gloves in TWC’s feature film, as it charts Durån’s rise and rise to the tip-top of the boxing hierarchy,...
