Each year Cinekink co-founder and director Lisa Vandever previews her festival here on the blog, pointing Filmmaker readers to films of particular interest to our readers. This year, the festival ran earlier, so below Vandever presents a wrap-up in which she lists the winners and discusses some of her programming choices. — Editor.
Earlier-than-usual dates this year for CineKink NYC (February 7-12) and a ramped-up pre-production schedule hampered my ability to put together some coherent thoughts on the festival going into it. I’m happy, then, for the opportunity to remark on some of the highlights coming out of it — and things to look for in the year ahead, either via other festivals or as part of the CineKink 2012 tour.
After several weeks of being holed up with nothing but stacks of screeners, it’s very easy to fear I’ve lost perspective on what’s going to work well up on the big screen.

William Burke and William Hare are notorious for a series of murders in 1828 in which they suffocated (later to become known as “burking” in their honor) seventeen victims and sold the bodies to Dr. John Knox, a medical professor at the renowned University of Edinburgh, for use in dissection and other scientific pursuits. They were later convicted and hung for their crimes, though their legacy lives on for aficionados of both medical science and murder history.

Chicago – There are few sights more depressing than a game cast all dressed up with nowhere to go and no good jokes to share. “Burke and Hare” is the sort of comedy Mel Brooks was making in the ’90s. All the ingredients are on hand for a promising comedy, and yet something’s missing—namely, laughter. The timing is off, the punch-lines are obvious and the actors are bored beyond belief.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
What makes “Burke and Hare” doubly unfortunate is the fact that it was directed by John Landis, the same man responsible for a true American classic (“Animal House”) and one of the all-time great escapist entertainments (“The Blues Brothers”). This picture marks his first feature directorial effort since 1998’s soulless “Blues Brothers 2000” and the largely unseen “Susan’s Plan.” It’s interesting to note that Landis has shot his recent work (including the upcoming farce “The Rivals”) in Britain,...

Edinburgh’s most notorious serial killers, William Burke and William Hare were a pair of Irish immigrants who terrorized the Scottish capitol in the 1820’s. Together they murdered 17 and sold the corpses to medical lecturer Dr. Robert Knox for his research. And if you think this duo is a lousy basis for a good comedy, the laugh-free “Burke and Hare” from director John Landis will prove you right. The two Williams, Burke (Simon Pegg) and Hare (Andy Serkis), stumble upon a way to make a fast buck during hard times: When a...

Thirty years after his horror comedy An American Werewolf in London put him on the genre map, director John Landis is back with his latest project, Burke & Hare, an incredibly dark comedy surrounding two down-on-their-luck 19th century graverobbers (played by Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis) who realize that a local medical school will pay handsomely for fresh cadavers. Being resourceful entrepreneurs, Burke and Hare start causing 'accidents' around Edinburgh in order to fulfill the need for bodies, which eventually spirals out of control in both hilarious and dramatic fashions.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to get on the phone with Master of Horror Landis about his return to the world of horror comedy, how closely the movie Burke & Hare mirrors the real-life events of the actual serial killers of the same name and what's on the director's plate next.

Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman made grave robbing hilarious in 'Young Frankenstein,' now Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis give it their best shot in 'Burke and Hare,' the new horror comedy from 'An American Werewolf in London' director John Landis.
Landis's first movie in 13 years tells the story of real-life 19th century criminals William Burke and William Hare, who graduated from grave robbing to murder in supplying bodies for doctors to autopsy.
The ghoulish subject's been treated as straight horror with Boris Karloff in 'The Body Snatcher' and the lesser-known 'The Doctor and the Devils.' For his humorous take on the same tale, Landis assembled a comedic cast that includes Isla Fisher, Tom Wilkinson and Tim Curry and horror legend Christopher Lee to boot.

John Landis’ grave robbing black comedy “Burke and Hare” finally gets its Stateside theatrical release next month in September, but SundanceNOW will have the film first for VOD this August 5th. The film has received mostly mixed reviews, but if you’re a fan of Simon Pegg of “Shaun of the Dead” fame and Andy Serkis sans motion-capture devices hooked up all over his body, “Burke and Hare” should be up your alley. You can read our two reviews for the film (yes, two) — Brent’s review and Gazz’s review. It’s 1828 and Edinburgh is the capital of scientific discovery. With the best and brightest minds racing to unlock the secrets of human anatomy, autopsies are all the rage and the freshly deceased are in high demand. So when William Hare and William Burke find themselves in a bit of a fiscal crisis, they decide to take good ol...

Burke and Hare
Written by Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcroft
Directed by John Landis
UK, 2010
There have been several films about the infamous true-life grave robbers William Burke and William Hare, including Freddie Francis’s 1985 The Doctor And The Devils and John Gilling’s 1959 The Flesh and The Fiends. Perhaps the most famous is Robert Wise’s 1945 classic The Body Snatcher, which starred both Boris Karloff and Béla Lugosi. You can now add John Landis’s Burke and Hare to the list.
Burke and Hare marks Landis’s first feature theatrical release in twelve years, the last being 1998′s Susan’s Plan. Thankfully the director who gave us such classics as Animal House, An American Werewolf in London, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and The Blues Brothers still has a trick or two up his sleeve. Admittedly his latest feature pales in comparison to his earlier work, but Burke and Hare...

John Landis' Burke & Hare is one of those films where having watched it, you feel compelled to continually check you did, in fact, enjoy yourself. There's plenty to enjoy. It's an admirably scruffy little period piece based (if somewhat loosely) on the true story of the murdering nineteenth-century twosome who went down in the history books after creating their own supply once the demand for medical cadavers rose sky-high.
It does a nice line in gentle black humour, a spot of light blood and guts, and features some surprisingly memorable performances from the cameos as well as the marquee names. It's just that from the director of American Werewolf In London - not to mention The Blues Brothers, or Three Amigos, or Animal House - it seems oddly, well... restrained.
And it starts to give this impression right from the introduction, where UK comedian Bill Bailey runs the audience...

Burke & Hare
Stars: Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Jessica Hynes, Isla Fisher, Tom Wilkinson, Ronnie Corbett, Tim Curry | Written by Piers Ashworth & Nick Moorcroft | Directed by John Landis
As far as comedies about human atrocities go, it’s hard to fault Burke & Hare. Indeed, the choice to inject the ‘true’ story with pratfalls, slapstick and squirty-blood is a brave and inspired one: we all know that murder = bad; why not have a laugh about it? John Landis certainly isn’t afraid to, and after 12 years out of the director’s chair, i’m not going to be the one that tells him otherwise.
Set in 19th century Edinburgh, the plot follows William Burke (Pegg) and William Hare (Serkis), a couple of down-on-their-luck Irish immigrants trying to rob graves to sell the bodies for dissection by a doctor at the university (Wilkinson). When the plan turns out to be less lucrative than the pair had hoped,...

UK audiences lap up 3D horror, while Simon Pegg's Burke and Hare makes an unpromising debut in sixth place
The winner
Anyone who still needs persuading regarding the potential of 3D to re-energise flagging film brands need look no further than the current success of Lionsgate's Saw 3D. Having peaked in 2006 with Saw III, which opened with £2.52m, debuts for the Halloween staple dipped slightly for the fourth and fifth instalments, before diving to £1.74m with Saw VI. Now episode seven arrives with an opening salvo of £3.6m, including £659,000 in previews. Even with the Thursday takings stripped out, that's comfortably the biggest-ever opening for a Saw movie. Rival studio Paramount will be hoping for a similar uplift when it releases Jackass 3D on Friday.

John Landis's first film in 12 years is a sad disappointment. It stars Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis as the Irish murderers William Burke and William Hare, who became notorious for providing corpses for Dr Knox (Tom Wilkinson) to dissect in 1828 Edinburgh. Made at Ealing studios with a formidable British cast, its model is clearly Kind Hearts and Coronets. The result however is closer to knockabout pantomime than black comedy, with the two Billies as cheeky Broker's Men, accompanied by one of the two Ronnies, the diminutive Corbett, as the pompous captain of the local militia.
Landis and his screenwriters, Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcroft, have little to say about Burke and Hare and their desperate times, and the only "ism" the makers seem committed to is anachronism. The picture is full of schoolboy jokes, about for instance Charles Darwin who was in Edinburgh at the time, and Joseph Lister who wasn't,...

Though Italy is known for lots of spice and zaniness, when it comes to their theatrical one-sheets, it looks like creativity is getting "the boot" in favor of recycling what's already appeared elsewhere. Take a peek at the new Italian poster for Burkey and Hare and see if you don't agree.
Along with Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis as the title characters, Burke and Hare stars Isla Fisher, Jessica Hynes, Tom Wilkinson, Tim Curry, Ronnie Corbett, Reece Shearsmith, David Schofield, Allan Corduner, Bill Bailey, Hugh Bonneville, and Michael Smiley.

In 1820 Edinburgh stood at the centre of the modern medical world. It was a pioneering city in which anatomical demonstrations were the theatre of choice for any discerning academic. In a world where medical innovation bestowed immediate renowned and prosperity, competition was rife to attract the attention of the King with ever more dramatic displays. However this theatre was staged in a time before preservation techniques had been truly perfected. With a corpse as the star of the show and a body shortage depleting the talent pool some progressive doctors would do anything it took to ensure that the show could go on…
William Burke and William Hare are two Irish grifters scratching out a living in the slums of the city. Surviving on the chickenfeed profit made from their hit and miss cons, the two rely upon income from Mrs Hare’s lodging house to keep them fed, whiskeyed and watered.

“Burke and Hare” is a black comedy with a huge cast of stars however the tale behind the laughter is far darker. The movies tells the story of Scotland’s most infamous grave robbers and murders, the Irish pair, called William Burke and William Hare, played by Simon Peg (“Shaun of the Dead”, “Star Trek”) and Andy Serkis (“Lord of the Rings”, “King Kong”). Burke came from Urney, County Tyrone. He served as an officer’s servant in the Donegal Militia. He left his wife and two children in Ireland and moved to Scotland in about 1817. There he met his girlfriend Helen McDougal who was an accomplice to the murders. Burke’s birthplace is unknown but it thought to be either Newry or Derry. They both worked on the Union Canal but saw an opportunity to make money elsewhere. The gruesome duo made their living in the 19th century by...

It's got Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis in it, along with a Spaced reunion in the rest of the cast. John Landis is directing. So, can Burke And Hare live up to its potential?
John Landis has given us some great comedy films over the years, including The Blues Brothers, Animal House and Coming To America. Arguably his most well-loved film is the cult classic horror comedy An American Werewolf In London, a wry cocktail of horror and comedy that provokes as many screams as guffaws.
Having not made a feature film since 1998's derided sequel effort, Blues Brothers 2000, Landis now brings us Burke And Hare, a macabre comedy based on the historical West Port murders. The real William Burke and William Hare murdered 17 people in the 1820s, at the behest of a private anatomy lecturer who needed cadavers for public dissection.

Monday mornings are generally not to be looked forward to. However, this Monday morning I had the distinct pleasure of fleetingly enjoying the esteemed company of Messrs. Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis a.k.a. Burke and Hare.
Burke and Hare, if you didn’t know, is the new pitch black comedy from John Landis (An American Werewolf in London and The Blues Brothers). It follows the wacky hijinx of two 19th century grave robbers – William Burke and William Hare.
In town to promote the cadaver ridden tale, Gollum and Shaun awaited me within room 209 of the super plush Soho Hotel. After enjoying a swift pre-interview fizzy water and garibaldi biscuit, I was ushered into a hotel room that had been converted into a miniature studio for a few short but sweet minutes of their time.
FilmShaft: Hiya guys, it’s a pleasure to meet two heroes of mine – I’m Alan from FilmShaft.

It might be one of the last days of shooting (the 38th of 39 in fact), but March 18, 2010, was a very good day indeed to be on the set of John Landis' new comedy horror movie Burke & Hare . For a start, three of the total seventeen murders carried out by the infamous corpse sellers William Burke and William Hare in Scotland between 1827-28 are being filmed at the Luton Hoo location, and one of those is actually the 'Burking' explanation death. Burke was so proud of purposely smothering his victim's mouth while compressing their chest that the Edinburgh-based gruesome twosome conceitedly named the killing method after him. Then there's the reason why practically all the headline cast has arrived at the Bedfordshire country estate set in a state of real excitement even though they...

John Landis hasn't had a feature film in theaters in over 10 years but that's about to change this weekend with the UK release of the Simon Pegg romantic comedy (albeit a dark romantic comedy) Burke & Hare. The film, which stars Pegg and Andy Serkis as real life duo William Burke and William Hare, who in the 1800s were responsible for a number of murders in Edinburgh. In Landis' version, their get-rich-quick scheme of providing cadavers for city doctors runs into a glitch when they run...

If you’re not going to make a film for over a decade, why not come back with a humorous take on mass murder, starring Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, and Isla Fisher? That appears to be the thought process director John Landis took when it comes to the upcoming Burke & Hare. Pegg and Serkis star as real Irish murderers,William Burke and William Hare, “who killed at least 17 people in Edinburgh in 1827-8.” Sounds fun, right?

At long last John Landis is back where he belongs: directing movies. It's been more than a decade between features for the man and despite a few hiccups along the way - such as the film briefly appearing on the website for the Toronto International Film Festival before promptly disappearing, an occurrence that was never explained but almost certainly means it was invited but couldn't be completed on time - his return to the land of the horror comedy is nearly complete.
Based (loosely) on a true story, Burke and Hare stars Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis as a pair of real life grave robbers who turned to pilfering the dead as a quick and easy means of making a bit of money. It didn't turn out so well for them. Here's the official synopsis:
