Paradise Square makes quite the reach. A musical about the build-up to New York’s horrific Draft Riots of 1863 reaches to the past to tell us about the present. It reaches across cultures to tell us about assimilation and appropriation. It reaches across styles of music and dance to celebrate diversity and commonality. It reaches to contain both epic realism and mythical nostalgia. And somewhere along the line it reaches a point of no return, when all that reaching just wears itself out.
The musical, opening tonight at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, is big in a way that calls back to the Cameron Mackintosh productions of the 1980s and their ’90s Broadway offspring like Ragtime and Kiss of the Spider Woman – those latter two courtesy of Garth Drabinsky, the producer attempting a comeback with Paradise Square after some financial flim-flam landed him in a Canadian prison; he was paroled in 2013 after serving 17 months.

Covid has caused a lot of uncertainty around Broadway. Several shows have had to suspend performances, go on hiatus, or close permanently. And the American Theatre Wing hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet. Though with that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are six productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we see any of them contend at the next Tonys? Below is a look at the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of their authors, casts, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

'Yesterday' movie: Leleti Khumalo and Lihle Mvelase. 'Yesterday' movie review: Fantastic central performance in South African AIDS drama To date, nowhere has the AIDS pandemic been felt more strongly than in Sub-Saharan Africa, home to approximately 10 percent of the world's population and two-thirds of the planet's 30-35 million AIDS cases. In the past thirty years, it is estimated that more than 20 million Sub-Saharan Africans have died from complications of the disease.* Even today, drug cocktails that are relatively accessible in other parts of the globe are still beyond the means of the vast majority of Africans. Writer-director Darrell Roodt's South African drama Yesterday is set in this catastrophic scenario. The film depicts the effects of AIDS in the life of a young Zulu woman who contracts HIV from her husband. Although Roodt's narrative maintains its focus on the plight of one particular individual, the (for non-Zulus) quirkily named Yesterday represents millions of other women,...

The winners will be announced at NYC’s Town Hall on May 19. Below is...

Giant Public Theater, NYC
Giant, the new musical based on the Edna Ferber novel and now playing at the Public Theater, is a major achievement. No, it is not perfect, and it probably won't please everyone. There are no show-stopping production numbers that we are so used to in most musicals. However, I found its ambitious attempt to tell a sprawling, epic story -- one that encompasses two generations over twenty-five years and deals with themes ranging from family to racism to loving the Texas land to an evolving America -- to be wonderfully fulfilling.
Giant has a strong, dramatic book by Sybille Pearson, a superb cast, and a rich, melodic, surprisingly accessible score by Michael John Lachiusa that features a number of appropriate musical styles, including Mexican folk, rock, jazz, and country. It grabbed me from the opening moments and, while there were a couple minor bumps in the road,...

John Dossett didn’t have to go far to join the “Newsies” cast. The South Orange, N.J., resident was initially drawn to the project because Paper Mill Playhouse, where the show premiered, was 10 minutes from his house. Before taking on the role of newspaper magnate Pulitzer, Dossett knew the 1992 film from watching it with his son. Though he thinks the stage version, which opens on Broadway March 29, is better than the movie. An old hand at Broadway, Dossett relishes being around the cast’s young energy, and hopes to set an example.“It's so fun to see their unbridled joy in doing this,” Dossett says. “I've been doing this over 30 years. I have a life that takes time and energy and money. These kids are just walking in and all they have to do is pay the rent, get some food, and their life is complete because they have.

Though they’re not in the newsboy gang, Capathia Jenkins and John Dossett feel like part of the crew. “The other day we met in the rehearsal, and we looked at each other and thought, ‘Wow, we’ve been around for a while, and we can really sense when something is the real thing,’ ” says Jenkins, who came on board for Broadway. “I haven’t been as excited about a show since I did ‘Gypsy’ with Bernadette Peters,” Dossett says. The stage veterans, who have appeared in 16 Broadway shows combined, play burlesque theater owner Medda and Jack Kelly’s archnemesis Pulitzer in “Newsies.” Dossett says working with young actors invigorates him as a performer.“It’s so fun to see their unbridled joy,” he says. “I remember back in ’78, I was always one of the youngest people in the company, and now I’m kind of the old guy. I kind of embrace that.
