Paramount+’s Lioness may have shed its “Special Ops”: prefix for Season 2, but it made significant gains everywhere else.
Simply said, the Zoe Saldaña-led spy thriller’s sophomore run is fantastic, and stands as one of the year’s best TV shows. The only thing keeping it from an “A+” grade is that at times it gets so into the weeds of intelligence gathering and hair-trigger geopolitical issues, it can be a bit hard to follow. But if that is your jam (as it is mine), a rip-roaring thrill ride awaits.

Directed by Ali Abbasi (who made Iranian serial killer drama Holy Spider) and written by political journalist Gabriel Sherman, The Apprentice is a chilling account of Donald Trump’s rise to power in New York in the ’70s and ’80s. It’s particularly fascinating because it traces the origins of key elements of Trump’s larger-than-life persona, though it arguably never gets below the surface.
The Apprentice begins in 1973, where 27-year-old Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan) is working as a rent collector for a real estate company owned by his father, Fred (Martin Donovan). With an upcoming lawsuit hanging over their heads, Trump starts hanging out at a swanky New York club, where he’s singled out by shark-like lawyer Roy Cohn (Succession’s Jeremy Strong), who revels...

Although Sebastian Stan has taken on the role of a lifetime with The Apprentice, he still holds a light for some of the roles he didn’t get.
The Golden Globe nominee, who portrays Donald Trump in the Ali Abbasi-helmed film, recently revealed that he was up for starring roles in Star Trek (2009) and Green Lantern (2011) years before playing the twice-impeached president.
“There were a couple of things I didn’t get that I really desperately wanted,” he said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “But Captain Kirk for J.J. The Apprentice is a bold and intense biographical drama that delves into Donald Trump’s rise as a real estate mogul in New York during the 1970s and ’80s. Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the film stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as his ruthless mentor, Roy Cohn. After years in production limbo, it finally premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and has since become a powerful examination of Trump’s early years.
The story follows Trump’s journey from a somewhat naïve young man born into wealth, to a cold and calculating businessman who learns the dark arts of manipulation, deceit, and power from Cohn. From navigating real estate deals in New York to his family dynamics, the film lays bare his transformation into the domineering figure we recognise today. Ali Abbasi Says He’s ‘Available to Talk’ After Donald Trump Rips ‘The Apprentice’ as a ‘Hatchet Job’
“The Apprentice” director Ali Abbasi is here to talk if you need to, Donald Trump.
Abbasi has weathered numerous digs from the former president, including a threatened lawsuit. In turn, “The Apprentice” producers launched a Kickstarter campaign to cover anticipated legal fees, as well as to increase marketing and host screenings of their film ahead of the 2024 election.
Now, Abbasi is asking Trump if he finally wants to bury the hatchet — sort of. In response to Trump’s latest tirade against the film, Abbasi tweeted, “Thanks for getting back to us, Donald Trump. I am available to talk further if you want. Today is a tight day w a lot of press for ‘The Apprentice,’ but i might be able to give you a call tomorrow.”

Former President of the United States and "Home Alone 2" actor Donald Trump isn't happy about how he's portrayed in the explosive new biopic "The Apprentice." The movie, which stars Sebastian Stan as Trump, takes a searing look at Trump's real-estate career in New York in the 1970s and 1980s, and though it's not exactly clear if Trump has seen the film, he does not like it.
The film officially released in the United States on Friday, October 11, and Trump quickly took to Truth Social, his social media platform, to put the movie on blast.
"A Fake and Classless Movie written about me, called, 'The Apprentice' (Do they even have the right to use that name without approval?), will hopefully 'bomb,'" the Republican candidate for president wrote. Sebastian Stan was tasked with gaining 15 pounds when he took on the role of Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” — a feat he managed with the help of Coca-Cola. “I actually started drinking a lot of Coca-Cola. Tell you, if you drink four Coca-Colas a day, a lot of things happen to your body. Don’t do it,” he told “Entertainment Tonight.”
“I think it is important that we try and understand this person beyond just, you know, the red tie and the flare and the mannerisms and everything, and just try to get underneath it,” Stan added.
Stan’s weight gain method of choice was somewhat appropriate, given Trump’s own love of soda. Of course, Trump doesn’t go for the sugary version — he shared in 2017 that he drinks 12 Diet Cokes a day.

The Apprentice actress recently opened up about portraying the late Ivana Trump in the Ali Abbasi-helmed film about former president Donald Trump‘s early ’80s rise, which is now playing in theaters.

I was actually very nervous, mostly because I’ve never played a real person before,” Bakalova told Collider. “I knew that Sebastian [Stan] and Jeremy [Strong] have both played real people before, and they did a great job. I just wanted to be on their level. I wanted to not disappoint them. I was trying my best to listen to as many recordings of her, watch as many videos of her, and know as much about her story as possible so I could deliver what they deserve.”

Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

While the movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, it is yet to be released for the masses. The people behind the movie will be able to tick that column off on 11th October, 2024, when the movie officially releases for the world. One wonders why is it hitting the theatres so close to the elections. Jeremy Strong has an answer to that.

Plot: A depiction of the early days of Donald Trump’s (Sebastian Stan) business empire and how his friendship with Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong) paved the way for his rise to power.
Review: The Apprentice is one of those movies everyone seems to have an opinion about, regardless of whether they’ve seen it or not. Indeed, only a privileged group who saw it at Cannes and Telluride can really say what it is or isn’t, and now, thanks to a special, invite-only surprise screening at TIFF (where it’s not playing as part of the official selection), you can add JoBlo to that list.
So, I walked into The Apprentice expecting a dark, political drama akin to the work of Oliver Stone. This isn’t that movie, with director Ali Abbasi making this a somewhat apolitical work. Trump’s foray into politics isn’t mentioned beyond one or...

With less than a month until the 2024 presidential election, Jon Stewart has one movie on his mind.
On Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, the comedian called out Donald Trump‘s hypocrisy for standing on a platform of free speech while attempting to have the upcoming film The Apprentice shut down, calling it election interference.
“Oh, come on! That’s election interference?” said Stewart. “Maybe it’s election interference, but you gotta be a little bit flattered that you’re being played by Sebastian Stan.”
As a photo of Stan displayed next to him, Stewart looked smitten by the MCU star. “Oh, Sebastian. If you’re the Winter Soldier, why is it suddenly so warm in here?” he said.

Jeremy Strong has weighed in on the long-running discourse around casting straight actors in gay roles.
After portraying Donald Trump‘s gay mentor Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, premiering Oct. 11 in theaters, the Golden Globe winner said he thinks LGBTQ actors should be “given more weight” when it comes to casting LGBTQ roles.
“Yes, it’s absolutely valid,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “I’m sort of old fashioned, maybe, in the belief that, fundamentally, it’s [about] a person’s artistry, and that great artists, historically, have been able to, as it were, change the stamp of their nature. That’s your job as an actor. The task, in a way, is to render something that is not necessarily your native habitat. … While I don’t think that it’s necessary [for gay roles to be played by gay performers], I think that it would be good if that were given more weight.”

Donald Trump is a well-known controversial figure in American politics and has a reputation for holding grudges against those who mock him. With the awards race ramping up, and festival favorites emerging, the list of films in the Best Picture Oscar race can seem long, and, this early in the season, distinctly unclear. Fortunately, both Deadline’s Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic, Pete Hammond, and Film Awards Editor Damon Wise keep on hand an ever-evolving dossier of ones to watch. But then, of course, they don’t always agree. So, we got them together to boil it all down in a back-and-forth: What’s hot, what’s not, and what’s got big-prize potential. Bear in mind, there are, of course, more films yet to come, and for brevity’s sake, not every film with broad Oscar potential could be included in this discussion, but here are Hammond and Wise in conversation about some of the films on their maybe-Best-Picture lists right now. Click on each film’s title to read Deadline’s review.

The title of Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice makes one think of Donald Trump’s ludicrous reality competition series, which resuscitated his career and indirectly primed his political ambitions. In the context of the film, though, the apprentice in question is Trump (Sebastian Stan) himself, introduced at the outset of his career as his efforts to establish his own real estate empire out from under the thumb of his slumlord father, Fred (Martin Donovan), lead him into the tutelage of notorious lawyer and fixer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong).
The film wastes little time in positing Cohn as the Mephistophelean figure who shaped Trump into the figure we now know, taking a relatively nervous, insecure princeling and encouraging him to present a front of bullish, unrepentant narcissism to the world. Cohn imparts three golden rules for conducting himself in public and in litigation: always go on the attack, admit nothing and deny everything,...

As Sebastian Stan promotes his most controversial role yet, hopefully he’s getting some well-deserved rest.
The Golden Globe nominee recently opened up about how he got into character as Donald Trump for the upcoming Ali Abbasi-helmed film The Apprentice, which premieres Oct. 11 in US theaters, just in time for the undecided voters ahead of Election Day.
“It’s a Marvel film,” he joked on the Today show before explaining his process. “Well, [you] try to get sleep, which I didn’t.
There’s a lot of research out there, there’s a lot of footage and documentary. It’s pretty much been very well documented, his sort of rise into what we see today. Sebastian Stan is already a proven actor and action star, taking up several roles in various projects from the past, notably as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he’s been a part of other critically acclaimed projects such as Gossip Girl, Once Upon A Time, The Martian, and Black Swan.

But the 42-year-old Romanian-Amercian actor recently filmed what could be his toughest role yet. Stan was cast as Donald Trump in an upcoming movie called The Apprentice.
Portraying an actual person is hard enough, but acting as the 45th U.S. President comes with its own set of challenges, besides the criticism it is bound to receive from Trump’s loyal supporters. Needless to say, that’s going to be nerve-wracking.

Briarcliff Entertainment’s official The Apprentice trailer shows attorney Roy Cohn delivering advice that a young Trump took to heart and lives by to this day. Cohn tells his protege there are three rules he needs to abide by. Number one: attack, attack, attack. Number two: admit nothing and deny everything. And rule number three: no matter what happens, you claim victory and never admit defeat.
No wonder Trump and his team are so upset about the film’s pre-election day release date.
Sebastian Stan stars as Donald Trump and Succession‘s Jeremy Strong plays Roy Cohn. The cast also includes Maria Bakalova and Martin Donovan.

Trump is in the earliest days of his career when he encounters the man who will become one of the most important figures in his life, political fixer Roy Cohn. Seeing promise in young Donald, the influential attorney teaches his new acolyte how to amass wealth and power through deception,...

Though Donald Trump was the one who hosted “The Apprentice,” Ali Abbasi’s new film turns him into the apprentice.
After Trump hosted the reality series of the same name, director Abbasi is putting his own twist on the title for a buzzy festival feature biopic starring Sebastian Stan as the controversial businessman turned infamous U.S. president.
In the first trailer for the film, we see Trump taking a “Faustian deal” with right-wing lawyer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong) starting in the late ’70s and early ’80s, grooming him into the politician he would become today. According to the synopsis, “Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé — someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win.” Trump’s marriage to Ivana Trump (Maria Bakalova) and relationship with his family including Fred Trump Sr. (Martin Donovan) are also fictionalized onscreen.

Iranian-Danish director Ali Abbasi has tackled Neanderthalic customs officers in Border, serial killers in Holy Spider, and the fearsome Clickers in post-apocalyptic horror series The Last Of Us. But with upcoming biopic The Apprentice, Abbasi is set to tackle a different beast altogether: the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. An origin story for the former Potus set across the 70s and 80, Abbasi's hotly anticipated movie is set to see Sebastian Stan take on the role of a young Trump as he rises to New York real estate fame. The producers and filmmakers behind “The Apprentice” are positioning their movie as the film that Donald Trump and corporate America don’t want you to see — and now they want your help so that more average Joes can see it. Specifically, they want your money.
Producers have launched a Kickstarter campaign in a bid to fuel the movie’s marketing, cover some anticipated legal fees, and hold more screenings. An individual with knowledge of the campaign told IndieWire a small percentage of the money raised will go to attorney fees, while the majority is going toward marketing. There are rewards for the financial support, including getting your names in the credits, getting to stream the film, or for some of the top backers, having dinner with the producers and getting invited to an eventual New York city premiere.
Generally speaking, promotion of a film mirrors the film’s production budget.

The release plans for the long-embattled Donald Trump movie The Apprentice have taken another turn as the filmmakers, who are coming off a warm reception at the Telluride Film Festival, are launching a Kickstarter campaign.
The crowdfunding campaign, titled “Release the Apprentice,” will aim to “lend additional support in order to keep the film in as many theaters as possible for as long as possible,” according to today’s announcement. The news is interesting given that sources told The Hollywood Reporter last week The Apprentice is set to receive a theatrical release from Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff Entertainment on Oct. 11. (No official announcement has been made.)
Currently, the Kickstarter has a goal of $100,000 with incentives for backers that include a replica of cuff links seen in the film ($400), a producing workshop with producer Daniel Bekerman ($2,500), and an onscreen toupee prop worn by star Sebastian Stan ($3,500).

Sebastian Stan takes an interview as a young Donald Trump in the first footage released from “The Apprentice,” a biopic from director Ali Abbasi coming to theaters Oct. 11.
In the one-minute clip, Roy Cohn (played by Jeremy Strong) coaches Trump as he takes an interview over the phone with a reporter. “I intend to acquire the Commodore, and I’m planning on making it the best and the finest building in the city, maybe the country — in the world … it’s going to be the finest building in the world,” Stan says in a tempered voice that is far from a cartoonish impression of Trump. Trump biopic “The Apprentice” has finally been acquired by Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff Entertainment for domestic distribution — and is targeting a wide release before the election, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The film is eyeing an Oct. 11 release date. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
James Shani, who is an executive producer on the project via his Rich Spirit banner, led the group that bought out Kinematics, backed by Dan Snyder, in acquiring the controversial film directed by Ali Abbasi, as TheWrap has previously reported. The move paved the way for “The Apprentice” to finally secure U.S. distribution after Snyder, a staunch conservative, wanted out of the movie.
Negotiations to buy out Kinematics’ stake have been ongoing since Cannes. The buyout gives Ali Abbasi creative control of the film.
“The Apprentice,” starring Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong, had languished without a U.

Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump movie “The Apprentice” starring Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn will get a chance to help shape the 2024 presidential election.
“The Apprentice” has been acquired for U.S. distribution by Briarcliff Entertainment, which plans to release it in theaters ahead of the election on October 11, IndieWire has learned.
Abbasi’s film made its premiere in competition at Cannes to lukewarm reviews, even given the morbid-curiosity factor of seeing Trump’s rise to power — as well as it being an “Avengers” star who portrays the 45th president. In his review of “The Apprentice” out of Cannes, IndieWire critic David Ehrlich wrote that while the film generates an ounce of sympathy for Cohn and the “monster he helped create” in Trump, Trump as a character is too shallow to be dramatically interesting.

The controversial movie Donald Trump doesn’t want people to see is still being lined up for a pre-election release in the U.S.
The Apprentice, which made waves at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, is due for release stateside by Briarcliff, as we first reported. October 11 has been the date we’ve heard for a while now, but uncertainty has been fueled by a dispute with financier Kinematics, which is backed by Trump supporter Dan Snyder who reportedly took umbrage at the film’s depiction of the former Potus. The players have been inching towards a resolution and hopes are that it will be fully resolved in a matter of days.
The movie is due to roll out internationally from mid-late October with dates already set in multiple key markets. Last we heard, Kinematics was being bought out of the movie with its $5 million investment back and a premium of around $2M.

The Apprentice, Ali Abbasi’s film about Donald Trump’s early years, has set its UK release date for this October. More on it below.
After a successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Ali Abbasi’s feather-rustling biopic of Donald Trump, The Apprentice, is set to grace UK cinema screens this October.
Studio Canal, who nabbed the rights to the film in the UK, have announced that The Apprentice will be released on 18th October.
