In 1992, comic book writer and artist Todd McFarlane created a new superhero character called Spawn. Five years later, director Mark A.Z. Dippé and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy brought Spawn to the screen in a PG-13 rated movie that didn’t go over well with a lot of fans. There were rumblings of a sequel for years after that, but nothing ever happened. Back around 2005, McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. For nearly twenty years, he has been slowly pushing that project forward… but there is some level of hope that we might finally see the new Spawn sometime in 2025, so we figured we should put together a list of Everything We Know About the Spawn Reboot.

Who’s up for a game of superhero musical chairs? Blumhouse‘s Spawn is making moves today by revealing the new team of writers assigned to the long-gestating reboot. Signing their souls over to Satan to pen the screenplay is a trio of creators, including Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Captain America: New World Order), and Matthew Mixom (Yesterday Was Everything).
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane expressed interest in relaunching the character on the silver screen in 2017. After making arrangements with Blumhouse and attaching Jamie Foxx to star, Spawn has experienced several delays in development. McFarlane wrote the script’s first draft and is interested in directing the feature. We hear that Silver, Spellman, and Mixom will draft a new screenplay based on McFarlane’s ideas. While McFarlane is still interested in occupying the director’s chair, he admits he might not be the right person for the job.

Todd McFarlane’s “Spawn” movie has found a trio of writers to work on the script of his superhero movie.
Scott Silver (“Joker”), Malcolm Spellman (“Captain America: New World Order”) and up-and-coming writer Matt Mixon have boarded the project to write the script that has been in development at Blumhouse since 2017, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
McFarlane created the character for Image comics in 1992 and has already written the first draft of the script. He also suggested he may no longer direct the Blumhouse production.

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane tells The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.

During 2017's San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Blumhouse and Todd McFarlane were teaming up for a new Spawn movie that McFarlane would write, direct, and produce. Now, it's confirmed that Jamie Foxx will be the actor to bring the antihero to life on screen.
The news of Foxx officially playing Spawn comes from Deadline. Foxx has been wanting to bring Spawn to life on screen for quite some time, even meeting with McFarlane around five years ago to express his deep interest in playing the comic book character. Foxx's dream will finally become a reality, as McFarlane told Deadline that he wrote the role (in the new script) with Foxx in mind.
For those unfamiliar with Spawn, the character debuted in the first issue of the Image Comics series of the same name back in 1992. A CIA operative with innocent blood on his hands, the character Al Simmons...

Someone needs to tell John Leguizamo to pull his old “demon clown” make-up out of storage, because Spawn is coming back to theaters. Earlier this afternoon, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane—accompanied by his pal Kevin Smith—posted a Facebook Live video announcing that he’s just signed Blumhouse Productions and its founder, Jason Blum, to help him make a new movie based off of his hell-bound anti-hero.
The film would mark the first time McFarlane—who’s best known as a comics creator/guy who puts his name on gruesome action figures—will sit in the director’s chair. (Mark A.Z. Dippé directed the 1997 Spawn film, starring Leguizamo, Martin Sheen, and Michael Jai White.) According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is being pitched as a “low-budget horror movie,” which seems like a weird direction, given that one of the major appeals of Spawn is his crazy, effects-heavy ...

Comic book movies remain very much in vogue, so Todd McFarlane’s announced reboot of his Spawn franchise-in-the-making is really just a drop in the bucket. It doesn’t matter that there’s no real clamor for it, or that Mark A.Z. Dippé’s previous film made for an ignominious debut. Hey, if the X-Men franchise could right itself after X-Men: The Last Stand, then maybe McFarlane’s got a shot. At the very least, he really wants to do it, as evinced by his recent promotion of the undertaking at Emerald City Comic-Con.
Twitch recorded McFarlane playing to his Spawn devotees at the convention, where he revealed that his reboot will keep with the current trend of “dark” reimagining: “Listen, I’m going to paint it for you. The movie is going to be a dark R … If here’s PG-13 and here’s Deadpool and here’s ...

If you remember director Mark A.Z. Dippé.s 1997 looser-than-a-goose adaptation of Todd McFarlane.s highly popular Spawn comic series, chances are it.s because of how utterly disappointing it was. Though Michael Jai White.s performance was notable enough, when you.re playing opposite Fat John Leguizamo Clown, it isn.t hard to look amazing in comparison. McFarlane has been talking about bringing Spawn.s hellacious universe back to cinema for years now, and now has rather excitedly reconfirmed this news. Speaking with MTV recently near a McFarlane Toys display at the Tia Toy Fair, McFarlane not only talked about the possibility of a multi-film Spawn franchise, but also of another animated series that isn.t only a possibility, but is actually already halfway finished. Just as he did when talking to Nerdist a couple years back, McFarlane once again mentioned the unnamed Academy Award-winning actor who is interested ...

In 1997 Mark A.Z. Dippé released a film version of Todd McFarlane's forever popular franchise Spawn. It sucked. In fact, it sucked bad. Fingers were pointed, fans were disappointed, McFarlane vowed redemption... one day. But will that day ever come?
MTV recently caught up with McFarlane and asked if there had been any progress toward a new Spawn film. Mind you, this happens at least once or twice every year. So what's the story today?
"I continue writing pages here and there," says McFarlane. "I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor. Every three weeks he’s on the phone going, ‘Todd, where’s the script? Todd, where’s the script?’ I can’t say who it is. He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine. Every week he delves into his personal and professional history to tell the story of how he became a monster that makes monsters. So there I was, in a small conference room in Woodland Hills, California on a warm February afternoon in 2009. Sitting next to me was Mark Dippe, Industrial Light and Magic alumnus and director of the movie Spawn, and across from me sat Dean Cundey, the guy that not only shot all of John Carpenter’s early movies, but also shot Jurassic Park and Back to the Future just to name a few. While Mark A.Z. Dippé’s Spawn was considered a modest-success, a sequel has been in development hell since 1998. However, in 2009, creator-Todd McFarlane began work on a screenplay for a new low-budget movie, but would serve as neither a reboot or sequel. The film would be a stand-alone film that would be “creepy and scary”. Nothing has been heard about the film since, but Hero Complex interviewed McFarlane about the direction he wants to take the film.
In the interview, McFarlane revealed he intends to approach the film in the same manner as Ridley Scott’s Alien or Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In the sense the title character doesn’t speak. “Really, the story revolves around the people who are trying to decide: “Is the ghost alive? Is the shadow actually moving?” When I give that pitch, some of the executives scratch their heads. To a lot of people, a...

Computer-generated imagery (CGI) has been playing a role in films for over 30 years. It began merely as the ability to draw lines on TV screens but has evolved into nothing short of the power to create worlds.
Beginning with 1981′s “Looker,” in which a naked image of Susan Dey was generated on a computer, and continuing on through “Avatar” (2009) in which a blue, naked, CGI lady flies around on a dragon, determined computer nerds FX pioneers have tirelessly pushed the boundaries of this technology.
With the much anticipated “Tron: Legacy” landing in theaters, we thought it would be a good time to look back on the history of the digital revolution that the original “Tron” helped launch.
‘Tron’ (1982)
Disney’s “Tron” put CGI in the public eye. In 1976, after encountering the old, old, old-school video game “Pong,” director/animator Steven Lisberger became obsessed with incorporating CGI into films. The graphics...

According to the latest issue of Rue Morgue, Vampire Hunter D creator Hideyuki Kikuchi plans to resurrect the popular story as both an anime series and a live-action feature. Kikuchi began the story in 1983, and to date 21 novels have been published.
The story itself follows D, a knight-errant of sorts who traverses the post-apocalyptic Earth, warding off vampires and his own possessed hand with the help of a sword and a faithful horse.
The series has previously been adapted into an anime movie released in 1985, and a second anime motion picture in 2000. The rights for a live-action movie were at one point optioned by Spawn producer Mark Dippe, but the film itself was never produced.

The latest issue of Rue Morgue brings the potentially intriguing news that Vampire Hunter D creator Hideyuki Kikuchi is planning to bring back the post-nuclear earth horseback-riding, sword-swinging, vampire-hunting dhampir in the form of both a new anime series and a live-action motion picture. In regards to the live-action feature, Kikuchi is working on it with the producer of the Biohazard video game, what gaijins like you and I call Resident Evil.
Vampire Hunter D began life as a manga series in 1983, became an anime movie released in 1985, and returned in a new anime motion picture in 2000. The rights for a live-action movie had previously been optioned by Spawn producer Mark Dippe. Presumably they have reverted back. One must assume this live-action movie in the works would be a Japanese production.

SoapNet has greenlighted a new original series to begin in June. Back-to-back half-hour episodes of Soapography, which profiles leading soap opera actors, will begin running weekends between 6-7 p.m. The Walt Disney Co.-owned channel has yet to decide how many episodes will be ordered or which production company will produce them. Susan Lucci, Deidre Hall, Rebecca Budig and Peter Bergman are among the soap stars expected to get Soapography treatment. SoapNet has launched only two original series in its four-year history: the Emmy-nominated talk show Soap Talk and Soap Center, which no longer produces new episodes. The channel, which is in 37 million homes, subsists largely on rebroadcasts of ABC daytime programming. Sister cable network Disney Channel has greenlighted a third installment to its original movie franchise Halloweentown to air in the fall. Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, Joey Zimmerman and Judith Hoag will return for Halloweentown 3, which goes into production next week. Writer Dan Berendsen (The Scream Team) and director Mark Dippe (Pixel Perfect) are working on Halloweentown 3. The film will be executive produced by Sheri Singer (Right on Track).
