Anyone who knows anything about the DC’s Dark Knight will probably tell you that Batman is more authentic to the personality of the character than Bruce Wayne. While they might appear to be one and the same person, Batman has repeatedly said that Bruce Wayne is the performance he puts up for society, while Batman is the persona that he identifies with as his authentic self.

Be it in live-action or in animation, actors who are able to discern this end up playing the character to perfection, as was the case with Kevin Conroy, who has essayed the role of the Dark Knight for more than two decades across mediums.

Batman is a versatile character. He has worn the faces of saviors and destroyers, been the Dark Knight in caped armor, the financial support of the Justice League, and occasionally, even a father figure. Despite this, there is one thing that has stayed constant through most of his versions; the bat does not kill.
Batman: The Animated Series starred Kevin Conroy
Kevin Conroy, who played the character for almost three decades, understood this fact about the character perfectly. He maintained a sort of consistency throughout all of the versions he played, and it seemed to be quite intentional. Specifically talking about the ‘no killing’ rule, it would seem that the voice actor upheld it almost as strictly as the Caped Crusader himself.
So much so, that he was upset with one of the most controversial decisions taken in the Snyderverse; Ben Affleck’s Batman killing people.

Fans of Batman: The Animated Series (Btas) can expertly recall the show’s gritty, dark tone that distinguished it from other superhero animated series. Bruce Timm, the lead artist and co-creator of the show, is largely responsible for that due to his genius.
But did you know that Timm’s vision for the show was initially met with skepticism and resistance from censors? In fact, Fox’s strict guidelines fueled the producer’s creativity and increased the show’s scare factor. One of the key elements that set the acclaimed animated series apart was its depiction of violence.
As a kids’ program, the Batman Animated Series was not allowed to depict any particular kind of violence or action that younger viewers might attempt when it debuted on Fox in the early 1990s.

Since the boom of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its impact on Hollywood, many major film auteurs have spoken critically of the genre that has been dominating the medium for years. Among them included the blockbuster pioneer Steven Spielberg, often considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and it’s hard to argue otherwise.
But while Spielberg once predicted that superhero films are doomed to meet the same end as Westerns, the filmmaker is not new to the genre, as he did helm a superhero parody in the ’90s.

The actor has gone on to lend his voice to Batman and Bruce Wayne in other media such as the Arkham games as well as WB’s DC Animated Universe films such as Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

Bruce Timm’s iconic Superman series, Superman: The Animated Series, is one of the rare few projects to have done the character justice. The 1996 series was one of the first to make the character seem realistic, rather than boring or too self-righteous. So much so that many would call him the most accurate version of the character.
Bruce Timm’s Superman: The Animated Series
There is absolutely no doubt that Timm’s contributions helped considerably in making the show what it is today. Being excellent as both an animator and producer, the projects that he has been involved with have become some of the best in DC’s animated universe. This is why it is interesting to find out that he created the Superman series out of spite towards one of the most respected filmmakers of all time.

Batman Beyond successfully builds upon Batman: The Animated Series while standing on its own in the DC Animated Universe. The show moves into the future without losing its creative edge.
A still from Batman Beyond
But fans of the acclaimed animated series might be surprised to learn that the iconic villain, Mr. Freeze, almost had a very different depiction than the one showed in the series.
While the episode featuring Freeze, Heart of Ice, went on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing, the initial plan for the character in Batman Beyond could have deviated from that well-established legacy.
Batman Beyond‘s Mr. Freeze Arc Could Have Taken a Wrong Turn
According to the initial script of Batman Beyond, Terry McGinnis (the new Batman), would have stumbled upon a gruesome scene while grabbing a drink from the Batcave refrigerator: the severed head of Mr. Freeze.

Everyone has their Batman, the version of the Caped Crusader that first springs to the forefront of their minds whenever someone utters the name "Bruce Wayne." Typically, your Batman is the one you had as a child first falling in love with the comic book world of Gotham City, and for a generation of people, their Batman was Kevin Conroy. Conroy was the definitive voice of Batman in DC animated television shows, feature films, and video games for over three decades, with many viewing "Batman: The Animated Series" from Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski to be one of the best (if not the best) interpretations of the Dark Knight ever created.

"Batman & Robin" is an infamous movie, in no small part thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger's turn as the villainous Mr. Freeze. Was the casting of such a big-name star a mandate from Warner Bros? Nope! Director Joel Schumacher personally chose Arnold for the part. Reading Akiva Goldsman's script for the film, Schumacher found the dialogue for Mr. Freeze, intended to be "Shakespearean," to instead be "hysterical. In my head, I was reading Freeze's dialogue as Schwarzenegger."
So, Schumacher called up Arnold and asked him to play the part. As Schwarzenegger recounts in "The Making of 'Batman & Robin' | Behind The Scenes."
"Joel Schumacher came to me and said that he would like me to play Mr. Freeze. 'I would not direct the movie, because I only can do this movie if you play Mr. Freeze.' So, what are you gonna do? I mean, screw up a whole movie?...

For all you "Saltburn" fans out there (we at /Film consider it the best "Wtf Movie" of 2023), you may have to wait a bit longer for director Emerald Fennell's next project. In an interview on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Fennell confirmed her film with DC Studios — an adaptation of the magical comic book hero Zatanna — is not moving forward.
Fennell was announced as the writer of the "Zatanna" movie in March 2021, fresh off her directorial debut "Promising Young Woman" the previous year. She was not confirmed to be the director of "Zatanna" and from these recent comments, it sounds like that was never the plan. As Fennell explained, J.J. The Scarecrow, aka Dr. Jonathan Crane, is my favorite Batman villain. I've always been drawn to his eponymous motif, his horror-twinged stories, and how he contests Batman for the title "The Master of Fear." Hence, though "Batman: The Animated Series" holds a special place in my heart, I've always been disappointed that Scarecrow wasn't an A-list player.
Crane is the antagonist in only three episodes and in each one is mostly an obstacle for Batman to develop against. In his villainous debut, "Nothing to Fear," Batman is dosed with Scarecrow's Fear Toxin and haunted by an apparition of his father, leading to the Dark Knight's most famous line. In "Dreams in Darkness," the Fear Toxin drives Batman temporarily insane and he's locked in Arkham Asylum. He must escape both his physical and mental prison before Scarecrow can poison Gotham City.

Harley Quinn is a fictional character in the DC Comics universe. With its 30th anniversary now here, Warner Home Entertainment gives you a chance to see for yourself. Out now in 4k Ultra HD for the first time, the movie stands up quite well.
When it arrived in late 1993, critics hailed it but did disappointing box office and it has subsequently gone on to gain stature as it has been available in multiple packages ever since. Written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko, and Michael Reaves, one would think many hands might spoil the tale, but instead, all four revered the Caped Crusader and honored him with an all-original story.

Arleen Sorkin, the original voice and inspiration behind Batman villain Harley Quinn, has died at the age of 67, TheWrap has learned. The news broke on social media Saturday, with numerous fans and colleagues sharing their memories of the actress and the character she helped bring to the screen.
Unlike most characters in the world of Batman, Harley Quinn did not make her debut in the DC comic books, but rather in the acclaimed ’90s animated show “Batman: The Animated Series.” Sorkin first played Quinn on the show’s seventh episode “Joker’s Favor,” with the character initially set to only appear in a single episode. But she became a recurring part of the main cast after a rough cut of the episode was met well by the producers.

A legend is no longer with us, for Arleen Sorkin has died at the age of 67. The news was first reported by voice actor Neil Kaplan and later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. She is survived by her husband and their two sons. DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn shared a tribute to Sorkin on Instagram, and her old friend and co-star Mark Hamill wrote: "Not just a wonderful talent, but a truly wonderful person. I'm grateful not only to have worked with her, but to have been her friend."
Mrs. Sorkin is most remembered for being the original voice of the DC Comics character Harley Quinn. She played the part across 17 years, beginning in "Batman: The Animated Series" in 1992 and for the last time in the 2009 video game, "Batman: Arkham Asylum." We'll talk about this part of her legacy soon, but first, let's be clear — Sorkin was not a one-trick pony.

When thinking about the most recognizable superhero characters in American pop culture, figures like Superman, Batman, and even Spider-Man have decades of history to pull from. Superheroes may be in their Hollywood golden era, but they're also seminal staples, enjoyed and passed down between generations. And then there's Harley Quinn, one of the most easily recognizable figures in the canon of DC Comics heroes and villains, who didn't appear until 1992. Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for "Batman: The Animated Series" as a henchwoman for the Joker, Harley quickly became a fan-favorite, especially with the legions of women who loved all things Batman. There were plenty of women in Batman's rogues gallery like Poison Ivy or Catwoman who had been around since the 1960s and 1940s, respectively, but Harley Quinn was different.

One of the joys of growing up in the 1960s is that you were treated to cartoons from earlier eras, long before limited animation filled the Saturday morning airwaves. Among those gems were the work of Max and Dave Fleischer, including Popeye, Gulliver’s Travels and, of course, Superman. Since then, they have fallen into public domain and were widely available, but never in the best condition.
Until Warner Bros. Home Entertainment got involved. First came a DVD set in 02006 and now we have a Blu-ray collection, mastered from the original film negatives. All seventeen episodes from September 26, 1941 through July 30, 1943 are here.

"Batman: The Animated Series" remains one of the most fondly remembered incarnations of the Dark Knight, with new fans still discovering it (and old fans revisiting it) on HBO Max. Writer Paul Dini and artist Bruce Timm spearheaded the creation of a cartoon that elevated the art form, with character designs, scripts, and voice acting that was head and shoulders above anything going on a the time. The show released 85 episodes on Fox between 1992 and 1995 and was revived and retooled in 1997 as "The New Batman Adventures" for 24 more episodes on the CW.
The animated series struck a more realistic tone (especially in the pre-"New Adventures" days), which means a lot of characters were powered down from their comic versions. For example, the episode "Zatanna" introduces the DC character by that name. While the Zatanna of the comics is a powerful spell-caster, this animated version is just a stage illusionist.
