- Republican U.S. senator from Alabama, 2 January 1981-3 January 1987. In November 1980, he defeated Donald Stewart, the Democrat incumbent. Stewart resigned his seat a day early, and Denton was sworn in the same day, becoming the senior member of the 1980 senatorial class.
- While serving as a US Navy pilot during the Vietnam War, he was shot down and spent nearly eight years as a prisoner of war. During one press conference staged by his captors, he successfully sent a message home by blinking his eyes in Morse code. He retired as a rear admiral.
