Frank Miller is regarded as a genius in the comic book world.
As a writer and artist, his work on Daredevil and Batman has gained great acclaim. His limited series Batman: Year One was among the inspirations for Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins movie in 2005.
He went on to create the graphic novels Sin City (adapted into a film which Miller co-directed with Robert Rodriguez) and 300 (also turned into a film, produced by Miller and directed by Zack Snyder).
After the release of Sin City, Miller was approached about making a film of The Spirit using the same gritty, film-noir style. It was his first solo project as writer-director and was released on the big screen by Lionsgate in December 2008, and on DVD/Blu-ray in the UK at the end of May this year.

Del Prete was part of Odd Lot Entertainment, which she ran with Gigi Pritzker for 23 years. Odd Lot produced Alexander's "Green Street Hooligans.

Chicago – Frank Miller’s “The Spirit” is far-from-perfect. The attempts at goofy humor fall flat, the script is wildly uneven, and Gabriel Macht is deadly dull in the title role, but there’s way more to like here than I expected after missing it in theaters and hearing all the horrendous buzz from its initial release. It may not be great, but “The Spirit” could surprise you too. It’s a mess, but it’s kind of a beautiful mess, especially in HD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 What do I like about Frank Miller’s take on the classic Will Eisner comic? It’s unapologetic. I always appreciate filmmakers willing to stick to their creative vision and there’s no denying that aspect of “The Spirit”. Miller is a visually intriguing director and “The Spirit” is just fun to watch in 1080P and with the incredibly low expectations I had going into it.

An exclusive new featurette for "The Spirit" has been released. The more-than-2-minute clip features a short introduction uttered by the film's director Frank Miller alongside female star Eva Mendes. And as the footage rolling on, it gives a glimpse on the behind the scenes of the action-adventure film in addition to description from Stu Maschwitz, who serves as the film's visual effects supervisor, about the filming process.
Speaking of "The Spirit" shooting, Maschwitz addresses such issues, as element and background, which are combined to create not only artistic but also satisfying scenes. He takes Mendes' swimming scene as an example, calling it strange technical exercise as the movie beauty doesn't do it in the water.
Mendes herself admits she doesn't know how to swim and has fear of a very deep water. Deborah Del Prete, one of the movie's producers, and Miller go on talking about how the crew manipulate Mendes' swimming scene.

It was as much about comic books as it was about cinema when “The Spirit” premiered last week at the Chinese Theater, says Variety. “Most movies based on comic books are interpretations,” said Lionsgate production prexy Michael Paseornek. “This is shot in the way you read a comic book with all the impact and power.” The after-party was across the street at the Roosevelt Hotel where producer Deborah Del Prete said director Frank Miller would rather draw than tell the actors what he wanted done on set. “This is a comic book movie where the visual art is up on the screen,” she said. “The stylized look is so key.” Speaking for the cast, Samuel L. Jackson said his main goal while filming was to make Miller laugh. “He told me I could play it as large as I wanted,” Jackson said. “After that I was going for Vincent Price as Dr. Phibes.

No sooner did Buck Rogers get optioned for a feature film this summer than the rumors named Frank Miller as the director, something that everyone involved has denied until now. The Hollywood Reporter and Variety both say Odd Lot Entertainment is close to signing Miller to adapt the comic strip to the screen.
Odd Lot hired Miller to direct The Spirit, which opens on Christmas Day and producer Deborah Del Prete let slip in October that Miller would move to the science fiction hero next. Odd Lot obtained the rights from Nu Image/Millennium, which has been holding the rights since the summer, obtained from the Dille Trust. The Trust is headed by John Flint Dille, a longtime friend of Miller's, and he may have started the rumor at the time of the deal.
Miller will reportedly write and direct the adaptation which will likely follow his personal dark vision of dystopias.

The on-again, off-again romance between Frank Miller and Buck Rogers may be back on for good. The Spirit director, who has been hinting that he'd direct a movie about comic strip and TV hero, is apparently going to announce soon that the project is officially on. IGN caught up with The Spirit producer Deborah Del Prete at the 2008 Scream Awards, and del Prate said Miller "would be making an announcement soon" about his Buck Rogers project. IGN also notes that the budget for the movie is set at $40 million, which means the cheap special effects from the 1980s TV show may be returning for the movie version. The Spirit itself looks a little campy, so it wouldn't surprise me if Miller went that way again for his next movie. Then again, does the character deserve the chance to move beyond his silly roots, the way Batman did? And with the...

The most recent example happened over the weekend when The Spirit producer Deborah Del Prete referred to her next project with director Frank Miller was an old sci-fi hero. This virtually confirmed the rumor that began over the summer that Miller would tackle the first Sf comic strip character.

IESB's Robert Sanchez could not get Del Prete to confirm if she was referring to Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers, both of whom have been optioned for film this year. The site did some additional digging and report, “sources very close to the Miller camp…confirmed the sci-fi hero that...

Frank Miller continues to lure femmes fatales for Will Eisner's The Spirit, lining up Eva Mendes for the key role of Sand Saref, a beauty with dangerous curves. Miller, the comic auteur making his feature-length directorial debut on the film, has welcomed acclaimed cinematographer Bill Pope to make sure the curves are in fine focus.
Mendes joins Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and Gabriel Macht in the fantasy thriller about a rookie cop (Macht) who returns from the dead to fight crime as the Spirit from the shadows of Central City.
Sand Saref is described as the only woman who could break the Spirit's heart. As teenage lovers, the two were torn apart when Sand's father was accidentally killed by the Spirit's uncle.
Production will begin in October in New Mexico and will be shot entirely at Albuquerque Studios.
Odd Lot Entertainment's Deborah Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker will produce along with Michael Uslan of Batfilm Prods.

Odd Lot Entertainment has hired former First Look Studios topper William Lischak as COO.
The 6-year-old indie production and financing company founded by Gigi Pritzker and Deborah Del Prete also has upped Linda McDonough to executive vp production and development.
The shingle, which recently moved its offices to Culver City, has hired Natalya Petrosova as vp finance, Eryl Woodlief as vp development and acquisitions, Delphine Perrier as director of legal affairs, contract administration and collections and Michael Urann as sales, marketing and acquisitions coordinator for foreign sales division Odd Lot International.
As CFO, COO and president of First Look, Lischak helped the company grow into a major independent. Before First Look, he worked as an accountant at Laventhol & Horwath.
Pritzker praised Lischak as "a significant voice in the growth, expansion and presence of independent Film Production worldwide."
Petrosova worked as a consulting manager of finance and operations at THQ, where she played an instrumental role in the creation of its wireless division.
