Focus Features has bought international rights to Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn, Variety has learned.
Corbet, who sits on the Berlinale jury, penned the film with Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), a Norwegian filmmaker who is also his wife. Following his pair of directorial features, The Childhood of a Leader and Vox Lux, we’ve been waiting a few years for new updates on Brady Corbet’s third film, The Brutalist. Initially announced back in the fall of 2020 with the cast of Joel Edgerton, Marion Cotillard, Mark Rylance, Sebastian Stan, Vanessa Kirby, Raffey Cassidy, Isaach De Bankolé, Alessandro Nivola, and Stacy Martin, production has now finally kicked off albeit with a new ensemble.
Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce will now lead the film, co-written by Corbet and his partner Mona Fastvold, which chronicles 30 years in the life of one artist’s enduring monolithic vision. “Amidst a revamped cycle of populism and prejudice in the 21st Century, The Brutalist is a film which celebrates the triumphs of the most daring and accomplished visionaries; our ancestors. "Sensual. Intimate. Sophisticated. Beautiful." Janus Films has unveiled an official trailer and a new poster for the 4K restoration re-release of Chocolat, the feature directorial debut film from acclaimed French director Claire Denis. This originally premiered at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and launched the career of this talented female filmmaker. Not to be confused with Lasse Hallström's film Chocolat, which earned five Oscar nominations, this one is an entirely different film - set in Africa. A French woman returns to her childhood home in Cameroon - formerly a colonial outpost - where she's flooded by memories, particularly of Protée, her servant from her time there growing up. Starring Mireille Perrier, Isaach De Bankolé, Giulia Boschi, and François Cluzet. This new 4K digital restoration being released by Janus Films was supervised & approved by director Claire Denis, with a mono soundtrack. Slowly but surely the earlier work of Claire Denis is getting restorations and re-releases, from Beau Travail to L’intrus to No Fear No Die. While we hope Friday Night and US Go Home are in the cards, next up is her 1988 debut Chocolat. Made soon after she worked under Jim Jarmusch and Wim Wenders, the semi-autobiographical feature is based on her childhood in colonial French Africa as the daughter of a civil servant. Set for a theatrical release starting February 24 from Janus Films, the new 4K digital restoration was supervised and approved by director Claire Denis, made by the laboratory Eclair Classics from the original feature negative. Ahead of the release, a new trailer has now arrived.
Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

The People We Hate at the Wedding is a comedy movie directed by Claire Scanlon, starring Kristen Bell, Allison Janney and Tony Goldwyn.
Weddings tend to be the kind of celebration where everybody tries to be at their best and everything has to go smoothly, but end up being events where nothing turns out as planned. In this movie both in its story, and its cinematic representation, we are witnessing more or less the same tendency.
Premise
Alice (Kristen Bell), her brother Paul (Ben Platt) and her forever optimistic mother (Allison Janney) travel across the pond to England to attend the wedding of their half-sister, on mom’s side, Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) with the intention of rekindling their sibling bonds in a more or less grown manner and recover the affection they once had for each other.

The term “romantic comedy” these days covers a lot of light entertainments that only notionally meet the genre requirements: They pivot on relationships while just glancing at romance, and are packed with dialogue that’s zappily delivered but not all that funny. “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is one such nonromcom. Sporting a game cast and efficient sitcommy pacing, it looks and sounds the part just enough to keep you diverted — until you notice, as the credits roll to upbeat electropop, that you haven’t laughed once. Starring Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney as the blundering American relatives lowering the tone of a posh English wedding, this straight-to-streaming Amazon release attempts to bring a faintly risqué, expletive-laden millennial sensibility to Nancy Meyers terrain, and never quite finds the sweet spot.

The first scene Kristen Bell shot in Claire Scanlon’s new comedy, The People We Hate at the Wedding, is one that more than a few might describe as a bit of a nightmare.
“It was 7 a.m. and they threw me in the Thames River,” Bell explained with a smile on Wednesday night while standing on the red carpet in Westwood, host of the Prime Video premiere. “That river is neither warm nor clean but the minute we were done with that scene, we realized, oh, the rest of the movie is going to be a breeze.”
Call it a reward for a dirty job done early, the rest of Bell’s experience on the film played like a “dream come true.” That was thanks, in large part, to her co-stars. Based on the book by Grant Ginder and penned by writer-producer...

The invitation is extravagant: sturdy paper, elegant typeface, a hint of rosemary perfume. On it a generous request, although to Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt), it reads as a threat: The pleasure of their company? To celebrate the marriage of their rich half-sister, Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to her equally wealthy fiancé Ollie (House of the Dragon’s John MacMillan)? “It would be an honor to have you there,” says the accompanying handwritten note. Alice and Paul — fierce in their disdain for their estranged sibling, dramatic in their expressions — would rather set themselves on fire.
But they won’t. They will fly to London, where Eloise lives, and attend the wedding. They will acknowledge their sibling’s nuptials and make small talk with her future in-laws. They will show up in the most literal sense of the phrase, but they certainly won’t be happy about it.

This laugh-free US-uk culture clash movie focuses on preparations for a wedding in London and makes you appreciate the alchemies of Nancy Meyer and Richard Curtis

A short, patchy, straight-to-streaming piece of semi-amusing content that tries to fit several different romantic-comedies into a single movie that doesn’t have the bandwidth (or the interest) to mine any of them for major sources of romance or comedy, .
Some of them should be so lucky.
At one point, during what can only be described as the worst bachelorette party ever conceived in movies and/or real life, Kristen Bell is submerged in the River Thames on a crisp fall afternoon while dressed in nothing but an American flag bikini (and that’s before the activity goes wrong). At another, Ben Platt pisses on iconic “No Fear, No Die” star Isaach de Bankolé out of spite, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write.

A star-studded cast in front of and behind the camera power “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Prime Video’s answer to the blockbuster romantic comedy.
Adapted from Grant Ginder’s 2017 novel of the same name, this quirky comedic film stars Oscar and Emmy winner Allison Janney, Golden Globe nominee Kristen Bell and Tge winner Ben Platt, along with César winner Isaach De Bankolé and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” star Cynthia Addai-Robinson. It is written by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneaux (“Bob’s Burgers”) and directed by Emmy winner Claire Scanlon (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”).
It’s an impressive crew that brings a great deal to the table, but what they don’t manage to bring to this comedy is much of a sense of fun.

‘The People We Hate at the Wedding’ Trailer: Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, and Allison Janney Cause Chaos
Who else wants to say “I do” to some dysfunctional family hilarity?
In Prime Video’s “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Ben Platt and Kristen Bell star as outrageous siblings who travel with their optimistic mother (Allison Janney) to the British wedding of their estranged half-sister (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). What could be a way to reconnect proves to only ignite their differences as chaos quickly ensues…and lands the core trio behind bars.
“Eloise is our half-sister, which means that we can half-ass the relationship,” Platt says in the trailer, referencing the bride-to-be.
Written by “Bob’s Burgers” sibling scribes Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“The Great North”) and Wendy Molyneux (“Deadpool 3”), “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is directed by Claire Scanlon, who previously helmed episodes of “The Office” and Netflix rom-com “Set It Up.”

"It's wonderful being here with my children, and all their friends." Amazon has revealed a fun trailer for a "raunchy comedy" called The People We Hate At The Wedding, arriving on Prime Video for streaming this November. Adapted from the novel of the same name. Family tensions ramp up among family members in the week leading up to their half-sister's wedding. Struggling American siblings Alice and Paul reluctantly agree to attend the wedding of their estranged, wealthy half-sister in the English countryside alongside their mother, Donna. This sounds crazy and wild and hilarious. Especially with this cast! The ensemble features Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Karan Soni, Dustin Milligan, Tony Goldwyn, Isaach de Bankolé, with Jorma Taccone and Julian Ovenden. This definitely looks like a good film to dump on streaming, despite the funny cast. Did anyone laugh at anything in this trailer? ›››

At every wedding, there are those guests that wreak some kind of havoc. In “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” those guests are Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney — and they know it.
In the first trailer for Prime Video’s upcoming movie, based on the book of the same name, the trio is a family jetting off to England to celebrate the wedding of Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). Of course, for her siblings Alice and Paul, it’s a bit of a begrudging attendance. As Paul snipes — while apparently standing next to a woman hanging out in an actual garbage can — “Eloise is our half-sister, which means that we can half-ass the relationship.”
Why is the relationship so strained? Well, according to Alice, Eloise is wealthy, and chose to make her life in London. The wedding, it seems, is an effort by Eloise to reunite the family. You...

Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American rights to Double Play, the latest feature from award-winning filmmaker Ernest Dickerson. The digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group/Entertainment Studios will release the film, based on Curaçaoan author Frank Martinus Arion’s internationally acclaimed Dutch-language novel Dubbelspel, on digital and VOD platforms on February 22.
Double Play is a drama set against the beauty and bittersweet complexity of Curacao, where poverty and wealth are two sides of the same coin. It follows Ostrik (Dani Dare), who is now a grown man working as a doctor in the Netherlands, as he returns to his childhood home to confront ghosts of his past revealed to him in a mysterious letter. Through his memories, we witness the sometimes-dangerous moves that adults made for the sake of survival in a time of turmoil and colonial unrest during the 1970s.

“My plan was to die before the money ran out” has become the anthem and tagline of the Sony Pictures Classics’ French Exit starring Michelle Pfeiffer as a 60-year-old penniless Manhattan socialite – a role that has been earning her plenty of awards season buzz.
Opening in theaters today before expanding nationwide April 2, French Exit is directed by Azazel Jacobs and written by Patrick deWitt, who wrote the bestselling novel on which the movie is based. In it, Pfeiffer plays Frances Price whose life hasn’t gone exactly as planned after her dead husband’s (Tracy Letts) inheritance is gone. She cashes in the last of her possessions and decides to live out her twilight days anonymously in a borrowed apartment in Paris with her directionless son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) and a cat named Small Frank — who may or may not embody the spirit of her husband.

Azazel Jacobs’ likably odd French Exit is headlined by the that magnetic chill of hers directly in mind. The movie — adapted by Patrick deWitt from his 2018 novel of the same name — is a tale about a classic, monied, New York City eccentric, the kind of person whose status is as obvious, in their utter aloofness to the world, as it is mysterious. Summing this up, somehow, with wonderfully caustic poise is Pfeiffer, who plays Frances Price: a widow on the verge — of going broke.

"Do you know what a 'cliche' is...? It's a story so fine... that it's grown old in its hopeful retelling." Sony Classics has debuted the first official trailer for French Exit, a devious dark comedy from filmmaker Azazel Jacobs that premiered as the Closing Night Film at this year's New York Film Festival. An aging Manhattan socialite living on what's barely left of her inheritance from her rich husband moves to her empty apartment in Paris with her son and cat. That's about it, there's not much more to the plot than that. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Frances Price, with Lucas Hedges, Valerie Mahaffey, Imogen Poots, Susan Coyne, Danielle Macdonald, Isaach De Bankolé, Daniel di Tomasso, and Tracy Letts as the voice of her husband (as the cat). I was hoping this might be amusing, but it just looks awful - so pretentious and snobby. Who wants to watch someone...

Over the weekend, the Closing Night Selection of the 58th New York Film Festival officially revealed itself in French Exit. One of the only true sight unseen X factors of this very unusual awards season, the movie was looked at as potentially an Oscar player for Michelle Pfeiffer at the very least. Well, having seen it a few days prior, I held my tongue until the embargo lifted. French Exit is not a good flick, and while Pfeiffer is really going for it, her candidacy in Best Actress is probably going to be an uphill battle. More below on the closer to NYFF this year. The film’s plot synopsis is, as follows: “An aging Manhattan socialite living on what’s barely left of her inheritance moves to a small apartment in Paris with her son and cat.” The festival provided a bit of a longer description: “Michelle Pfeiffer is entirely bewitching as Frances Price,...

New York Film Festival closing-night selection “French Exit” is that rare gem of 2020: a high-profile new movie that nobody has seen. Released by Sony Pictures Classics, it is a close collaboration between two old friends, author-turned-screenwriter Patrick DeWitt and director Azazel Jacobs (“The Lovers”). The director lured Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges to star in this comedy confection, adapted by DeWitt from his novel about a once-wealthy widow who leans on her handsome 20-something son for support. When she decamps to Paris with wads of cash after selling off all her worldly goods, it’s understood that her son will accompany her, leaving behind his one-time fiancee (Imogen Poots).
“What’s special about the film,” said NYFF head programmer Dennis Lim at Friday’s virtual press conference, “was its unusual, unpredictable tone. It’s surreal and dark and deadpan, and also heartfelt, as some changes happen moment to moment.

The man who quietly (and always weirdly) helped to define American Independent Cinema in the 1980s, Jim Jarmusch has stubbornly made his own kinds of films in his own way. If Hollywood ever thought they could make him fit into one of their boxes, they were wrong to try, and eventually, his actor admirers sought him out to be in a series of idiosyncratic and always fascinating films. Here’s our ranking of his singular output:
13. “Coffee & Cigarettes” (2003): Sure, it’s the last one on this list, which technically means it’s the “worst,” but even the least plotted, most indulgent and freely floating Jim Jarmusch film provides memorably weird, comedic pleasures. This brazenly pointless sequence of non-events is 11 segments long, each one starring different actors, all of them talking — most frequently about the Tesla Coil — while drinking coffee and smoking. Warner Bros. has released a new restricted trailer for director Tim Story’s Shaft movie and it’s littered with vulgar language. I guess we shouldn’t expect anything less from this franchise. The new trailer also leans into the comedy aspect of the film.
Shaft brings together three generations of the Shaft family that includes original Shaft actor Richard Roundtree from the 1970s films; Samuel L. Jackson, who played his nephew. John Shaft II, in the 2000 film; and Jessie T. Usher, who is the newest addition to the Shaft family. He is the estranged son of Jackson's character and a cybersecurity expert.
Shaft is the next chapter in the film franchise featuring the coolest private eye on any New York City block. Jj, aka John Shaft Jr. (Usher), may be a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death,...

"He thinks he's the black James Bond." Warner Bros has revealed a second official trailer for the new Shaft movie – a full red band trailer packed with F bombs and foul language galore. Would you expect anything less? This fresh, funny update on Shaft stars three generations of Shafts - Samuel L. Jackson (from the 2000 movie), Richard Roundtree (the original John Shaft from the 1971 movie and TV show), and Jessie T. Usher as the new John Shaft Jr. The cast also includes Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Lauria, Titus Welliver, Method Man, Avan Jogia, and Isaach De Bankolé. In this new movie, John Shaft Jr., now a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, enlists his father's help to uncover the truth behind his best friend's untimely death. I'm not sure all this humor really works, but at least they're playing crude jokes off of each other. This Shaft...

”“I’ve been thinking about why I do a lot of films about destruction,” Caballero told the audience.
Leading Mexican production designer Eugenio Caballero touched down in Qatar to talk about his work on Pan’s Labyrinth, The Limits Of Control, The Impossible, A Monster Calls and Roma for the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event this weekend (March 15-20).
Caballero acknowledged production designers are rarely in the limelight - by comparison with other key crew such as cinematographers and costume designers - and joked this was one of the perks of the job.

"Please tell me you did not get our son involved in your bullshit!" Warner Bros has launched the first trailer for the new Shaft movie, which is indeed a real movie and is really coming to theaters in the summer. This fresh, funny update on Shaft stars three generations of Shafts - Samuel L. Jackson (from the 2000 movie), Richard Roundtree (the original John Shaft from the 1971 movie and TV show), and Jessie T. This looks really goofy, like it's one big parody of itself, which somehow just work. Here's the first...
