Jerry Abbott, the father of late Pantera members Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, has died at the age of 80.
The news of his passing was reported by his friend Danny Wood Sr., who wrote on social media, “I’m very sad to tell everyone of the passing of a close friend Jerry Abbott. He died last night in a Denton care giving facility. His Family is having a private Funeral for Family and close Friends with a Memorial Service being planned. Details soon.”
Jerry, who was a musician and recording engineer, was an instrumental figure throughout Pantera’s formative years. He managed the band and co-produced their albums during their pre-Cowboys From Hell days in the ’80s.
In 2014, 10 years after the death of Dimebag, Jerry released the autobiography Over My Shoulder: The Life and Times of Jerry Abbott, in which he detailed his relationship with his sons.

The revamped Pantera have made it their mission to honor late brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) on their ongoing tour. On Saturday night (February 24th) in Baltimore, a young fan’s resemblance to Dime caught the attention of singer Philip Anselmo.
Seeing the fan with a curly mop of hair on his head brought back memories for Anselmo, who recalled his first meetings with Dimebag. “Some people might believe in reincarnation and stuff like that,” the Pantera frontman said from the stage. “There could be a younger Dimebag right up front … Dude, just shake your head like that and everybody in the whole place will see it. Hey, turn up the lights here. Show ’em. Look at that guy.”

“When I was first met Dime, his lid was exactly that length,” continued Anselmo, who invited up the fan to join the band onstage.

Philip Anselmo has finally opened up about the Pantera reunion in one of his first interviews since the legendary metal band re-formed with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante.
Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown recently appeared on an episode of The Metallica Report podcast, and the singer made what would appear to be his first public comments on the Pantera reunion.
“It’s empowering,” Anselmo said of the reunion gigs [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “It is incredibly beautiful, and you feel so much love when you’re up there. And if you take it in, it’s a great feeling, man. These days, man, that’s where me and Rex, you know, we get to dig the shows more.”
He continued, “When we were younger, we were at war and when we were onstage; we were just angry and at war, man. Now it’s — the songs are there. I can concentrate on singing the fricking songs,...

As the singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour, as well as solo artist, Corey Taylor has rubbed shoulders with many of his own personal heroes in the business. But his encounters with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and late Motörhead legend Lemmy Kilmister are among the most memorable.
In a new interview with Classic Rock magazine, the Slipknot frontman fanboy’d out on some of the famous rockstars he’s met over the years, most of which entail humorous — and in Lemmy’s case, downright raunchy — anecdotes.
Taylor had only met the Motörhead mastermind in passing prior to running into him in the kitchenette at the German headquarters of guitar company Gibson. As Taylor recounted, while the two were “smoking out of the window like high-schoolers, just being dicks,” Lemmy proceeded to tell what Taylor claims to be “one of the filthiest jokes” he’s ever heard in his life.

Pantera rang in what would have been the late Dimebag Darrell’s 57th birthday during their show on Sunday (August 20th) in Austin, Texas.
It was fitting that the reunited metal legends were performing in Dimebag’s home state of Texas on the late guitarist’s actual birthday. During a break in the concert, Philip Anselmo and company were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and Dimebag’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney for a round of the guitarist’s favorite drink, a “black-tooth grin”: whiskey with a splash of Coca-Cola.
After Blythe rolled out a beverage cart, Haney began passing out the shots — ostensibly some non-alcoholic, for the sober members of the tour party — Anselmo led the crowd in a round of “Happy Birthday.”

Pantera have been inviting special guests to sing their classic song “Walk” with them during their current North American tour, and at this past Thursday’s show they were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and late guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney.
Video footage from the concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas, shows the revamped Pantera lineup first being joined by Blythe, with Haney quickly following. The two share the mic for the song’s iconic chorus, with frontman Philip Anselmo putting his arm around them.
Lamb of God are supporting Pantera on the North American tour, and Blythe is a longtime friend of the band, so it wasn’t a big surprise seeing him onstage.

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” on Friday (August 4th) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was joined on the bill by fellow metal legends Pantera and rising rockers Mammoth Wvh (led by Wolfgang Van Halen).
The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

What a night! I just got back from the Pantera and Lamb of God concert at the Freedom Mortage Pavilion in Camden, NJ, and I’m still buzzing from the adrenaline. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. The crowd was insane, the sound was loud, and the bands were on fire.
Legacy would be a fitting name for this tour, because let no one be mistaken, this is not a Pantera reunion tour by any means, but much more of a statement and tribute to the band’s unrelenting and dynamic legacy. It will never be called a reunion because there is no way that could ever be true, as we are sadly missing two of the band’s founding members, brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott…and they left some very big shoes to fill.

Pantera’s classic albums will be released on picture-disc vinyl for the first time as part of a 5-lp box set arriving July 21st via Rhino Records.
The collection, dubbed The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000, includes Cowboys From Hell (1990), Vulgar Display of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), and Reinventing the Steel (2000). It’s limited to 3,500 copies sold through Rhino.com, Pantera.com, and indie retailers.
The five albums represent the band’s core discography, following a lesser-known run of four LPs in the ’80s that had more of a glam-metal vibe. The band reinvented itself with Cowboys From Hell, establishing the groove metal sound that made them one of the most revered metal acts in the world.
The reissues come at a time when Pantera are fully active again. Following the tragic passings of brothers Dimebag Darrell in 2004 and Vinnie Paul in 2018, a revamped lineup of the...

The 2023 edition of Welcome to Rockville took place over four days from Thursday (May 18th) to Sunday (May 21st) in Daytona Beach, Florida. The massive rock fest was led by headliners Tool, Pantera, Slipknot, and Avenged Sevenfold, while also featuring dozens more notable acts.
The festival closed out on Sunday with Tool’s first show of the year. The performance was particularly notable in that singer Maynard James Keenan dressed in drag just days after Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new anti-drag bill into law. As for the music, the band played a brief 10-song set that included classics like “Forty Six & 2” and “Stinkfist” alongside newer tracks like “Fear Inoculum” and “Invincible.”
Elsewhere on Sunday, Incubus paused their set for a moment to help a distressed fan. The band performed with new touring bassist Nicole Row, filling in for Ben Kenney after he underwent surgery for a brain tumor. Other highlights included sets from Deftones,...

Type O Negative are widely considered the definitive goth metal band, so it’s only appropriate that on World Goth Day (May 22nd), a new AI-generated video for the group’s song “Halloween in Heaven” has been unveiled.
The late Peter Steele originally penned the track as a tribute to Dimebag Darrell, and it was included on what would be Type O’s final album Dead Again in 2007. Dimebag even appears in the new video, alongside the many rock heroes Steele mentions in the song’s lyrics: “Bonham on drums, Entwistle on bass, as guest morticians / Bon Scott on vox, Rhoads just for kicks, on guitar Hendrix / Lennon sits in with his friend George but where is Morrison?”
“An artificial intelligence video for an artificially intelligent band!” remarked Type O Negative’s Johnny Kenny, invoking the band’s signature self-deprecating sarcasm.

Metallica will be embarking on their 2023-2024 world tour next month, and one of the bands supporting their North American legs is the recently reunited Pantera. While Pantera’s return has been met with some backlash, Metallica stickman Lars Ulrich thinks they have the right guy behind the drum kit.
Pantera are touring with classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. The latter two are filling in for late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, respectively. While the band has insisted that the reunion is a celebration of the legacies of Dime and Vinnie, some fans consider calling the band “Pantera” without the two brothers sacrilegious.

Moby might be best known for his pioneering electronic music, but he’s also fond of heavy metal.
In fact, he once tried to form a supergroup with Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee and Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Dubbed “The Sober Fucks,” the drunkenly-conceived idea never got off the ground.
“I’ve been sober for a while now,” Moby told NME, “but this was a late-night, alcohol-fueled idea between Pantera’s guitarist Dimebag Darrell, drummer Vinnie Paul, Tommy Lee, and I. I regret not starting this chaotic metal band with them, which would have sounded like a cross between Pantera and my old punk group Flipper.”
He had previously recounted the formation of the faux band in a 2008 feature in Classic Rock magazine: “At some point, about four in the morning [after a night of partying], Darrell, Tommy and I — in our completely devastated state — decided to form a band. We just...

Three of Texas metal band Pantera’s forthcoming reunion shows have been cancelled this week, apparently due to controversy surrounding a 2016 incident where frontman Phil Anselmo made a Nazi salute.
The decision by promoters to cancel the shows was reportedly made due to “intensive conversations with artists, our partners [and] festival fans”, Consequencereports. Pantera have been dropped from the lineups of Germany’s Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals, while their scheduled performance at Vienna’s Gasometer venue has also been cancelled.
The Independent has contacted Pantera’s representatives for comment.
While no specific reason was given for the cancellations, Blabbermouthreports that the backlash appears to have stemmed in part from the German Green Party. At a recent city council meeting in Nurnberg, a spokeswoman called out Anselmo’s “repeated” use of Nazi slogans, and said it was irresponsible to book them for Rock am Ring and Rock im Park,...

In the years leading up to the creation of one of the defining albums of thrash metal, Megadeth’s 1990 LP Rust in Peace, the band members were going through hell. Frontman Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson had formed the group in 1983, after Mustaine’s ejection from Metallica, and even though they had already released three underground hit records, the band was far from stable. Drug abuse and in-fighting led to the departure of half its original lineup, and by the mid-Eighties, those same forces were about to expel those musicians’ replacements from the band.

It’s no secret that any regular reader of WhatCulture.com’s music section has come across an Alter Bridge article or two, as thanks in no small part to the phenomenally sky-high vocal talents of one Myles Kennedy and the thundering powerhouse of a guitarist that is Mark Tremonti – along with an incredibly tight rhythm section in Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips – the band have gone from strength to strength over the last few years.
Speaking of Tremonti though, the man is absolute machine on and off stage, creating a style that’s all his own by cherry-picking hugely enjoyable techniques from the likes of Kirk Hammett, Dimebag Darrell, Paul Gilbert and more, along with his own take on the instrument to really become one of the best guitarists currently working today.

South By Southwest has been full of slow-burn horror this year, creating a pattern of early calms followed by short bursts of pandemic horror – some good, some bad. Film festivals aren’t meant for routines though, they’re meant to be places where a large variety of genre insanity can be found, insanity exactly like Stage Fright. Think The Rocky Horror Picture Show meets Friday the 13th, with ample doses of Dimebag Darrell level shreddage, and you’ve got the formula for a face-melting horror musical ripe with infectious energy and deadly sing-alongs. It’s a rare treat when a horror film can have me smiling from start to finish, but a continually inviting rock opera drenched in blood and littered with guts? That’s an event I’d put on my Sunday best for.

Straight away, the task of attempting to rank something as indeterminate as the top ten guitar solos ever is daunting, to say the least. How many genres do you take into consideration? Is acoustic given an equal consideration with electric? Do you judge it based on popularity, complexity, time length, or other factors? Whose opinion do you listen to?
Without further ado, here is one more version of the top ten guitar solos of all time:
Eruption – Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen, 1978). From the instant this searing explosion of notes erupts from the speakers, this aptly-named track stands out above all others as the purest pursuit of guitar playing perfection. Eddie’s virtuoso mastery of finger tapping, gonzo whammy bar dips, and artificial harmonics all come together in a staggering showcase of a man who forever changedthe way electric guitar was played. Comfortably Numb – David Gilmour (Pink Floyd’s The Wall,...

From the ferocious world of heavy metal to the Southern rock cats with that blues influence all the way to the puzzling UK hip hop scene, behold my choices for the best beards in music today. No matter what your significant other tells you, beards are cool. Combining enough glorious facial hair with the ability to rock one's ass off and you have accumulated enough credit onto your Mancard that you can do pretty much whatever the hell you want and get away with it. Although John Lennon, Jim Morrison and even Dimebag Darrell were all considered at one point, they were excluded on this list to include musicians still alive and performing to this day. #10. We guess it is safe to say summer is officially over; well for metal fans that is. The 2011 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival wrapped up its summer tour last week in Dallas, TX. During the closing shows, several of this year’s festival artists took to the main stage to perform a special tribute to Dimebag Darrell by performing Pantera’s “Walk”. Check out the performance and watch the Mayhem family charge the stage. We wish we were able to see this metal gathering when we went to the Mayhem festival back in July. Oh well, we still got to chat with a handful of the Mayhem bands, like Megadeth, Kingdom...

Former White Zombie bassist Sean Yseult posted a very interesting track (bizarre, actually) to her Soundcloud page recently... a song she claims to be the result of an impromptu jam in the early '90s between members of White Zombie and Pantera... including the late, great guitar legend Dimebag Darrell. The track is entitled "Dawn of the Horrible Gorilla!" (exclamation point included). Go below to find out where you can hear it for yourself... "Dimebag Darrell, Sean Yseult and [then Pantera vocalist] Philip Anselmo created this absurdity at 6am after a long night of drinking on a Pantera/White Zombie Tour in '92," Yseult wrote in the song's info. "Recorded on Darrell's 4-Track in his hotel...

It is truly a shame that the first thing most casual music fans remember about Pantera is that their guitarist was murdered on stage in one of the most tragic events in rock history. While Dimebag Darrell's passing was indeed shocking and tragic, he should really be remembered for his revolutionary approach to guitar playing, which brought together the brutality of metal with the thump of Southern rock for a swampy, punishing brew that was as thrilling as it was loud. Dimebag's skills were never on display better than on Pantera's final studio album Reinventing the Steel, which was released on this day in 2000.
Four years had elapsed between Pantera's previous album (1996's The Great Southern Trendkill), a scattered collection of tracks that, while heavy, did not capitalize on the success of 1994's Far Beyond Driven (which is one of the hardest, loudest albums to ever top the Billboard...

Rock gods Kiss made the news 10 years ago when they rolled out (ouch) their own line of custom coffins bearing the band's logo and likeness. Not just for show, either: "Kiss Kaskets" were the real deal (metal legend Dimebag Darrell was buried in one), and the limited-run originals cost around $5000 – long out of financial reach for many hardcore fans who wanted to take their love of the band to the ultimate extreme. But this week Kiss has finally released a a less expensive second-gen model... so start saving up now! Hit the jump for a look at the two different styles, the new price tag, and where you can get yours... A company called Eternal Image announced the arrival of the new caskets on the KISSonline...

If you're a rock star, you should probably be extra careful on December 8, as it is a strangely cursed day on the calendar for professional musicians. Of course, it's the day that John Lennon was shot to death by assassin Mark David Chapman, but it's also a dark day in the metal community for two reasons. December 8 is also the day that former Pantera and Damageplan guitarist Darrell Abbot (known to the world as Dimebag Darrell) was killed on stage by an audience member with a gun during a concert in Columbus, Ohio, and it's also the day that Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil crashed his car, killing passenger and Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley.
As the story goes, Hanoi Rocks had come from their native Finland to tour America, and most of the band spent the day partying with Neil at his home in Redondo Beach. Neil, Dingley...

Dimebag Darrell was one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time, and perhaps one of the greatest of any genre. He was the blazing fast riff master from the band Pantera (and Damageplan).
He liked his drink and also loved his friends. Known to his fans simply as "Dime", the guitarist was shot and killed on stage six years ago on Dec. 8, 2004 in front of a live audience.
This is a day that we look back in remembrance, light a candle, crank some Pantera and raise a glass to toast someone that influenced so many modern musicians. We miss his music and his rock n roll persona. Long live the first Cowboy From Hell, Dimebag Darrel.

Six years later it's still hard to believe. As fans around the world gather to remember the 30th anniversary of ex-Beatle John Lennon's murder, a small but no less dedicated family of music fans will mark Wednesday's (December 8) anniversary of another shocking rock and roll death.
It was six years ago today that beloved Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, 38, was gunned down in Columbus, Ohio's Alrosa Villa rock club in front of 250 people by 25-year-old gunman Nathan Gale. As confusion reigned in the club, Gale jumped onstage at the beginning of a set by Abbott's then-new band, Damageplan, pumping several bullets at close range into the guitarist before opening fire on the crowd and killing three others. A police officer responding to the scene killed Gale a...

Slipknot singer Corey Taylor has spoken about dealing with the death of the band's bassist Paul Grey. The vocalist tries to keep as positive as possible, and said Paul, who died of a drugs overdose in June, would want the band to continue, and that they should "celebrate" the singer's life when they take to the stage again next year.
"There are some moments that are more somber than others. When you're here to entertain you don't want to spend too much time on melancholy," Corey told NME.com. "There's time to reflect, there's time to celebrate. For me dealing with loss it's important to celebrate life and not to revel in death, to be honest."
He added that the group would continue to honor "the spirit" of Paul and fellow heavy metal star Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan from the band Avenged Sevenfold, who also died of a drugs overdose in 2008.

Machine Head rocker Robb Flynn is pleading with fans to help him find four priceless guitars taken from his house during a break-in. The guitarist was left devastated when he returned home on Tuesday, September 7 after picking his son up from school to find numerous personal items missing.
And he has been left particularly heartbroken over an instrument he used during the recording of the band's debut album, and another given to him as a gift from late Pantera rocker 'Dimebag Darrell' Abbott. Flynn has issued an appeal for the return of the guitars, and promises a reward to anyone who can help locate them.
In a message on Machine Head's official website, he writes, "Today, (Tuesday) September 7th, between the hours of 1.15pm. and 3.15pm (Pst) while I was picking my son up from school, my house (which is located in the Martinez/Virginia Hills area...

British thrashers Evile recently recorded a Pantera track for the upcoming Dimebag Darrell tribute album (which we last reported on here), which will be released on the cover of the 200th issue of the UK's Metal Hammer magazine. The special CD and magazine are being released to coincide with the five-year anniversary of Dimebag's passing, and will be available in shops on December 16th.
Alongside various other well-known bands such as Machine Head, Evile were asked to record a song as a tribute to the late guitarist. Evile recorded a cover of the track "Cemetary Gates", and this tragically turned out to be the band's last recording before the untimely death of their own bassist, Mike Alexander, who passed away on October 5th while on tour in Sweden.

It's been a huge year for England's Malefice. They've been to India to perform for thousands of insane Indian metalheads and documented the trip Here and Here, played at Bloodstock '09, toured Europe relentlessly and released their Metal Blade debut album, Dawn Of Reprisal. In addition, the band sat down with Fangoria back in April for an installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom (read it here). But, the Brits aren't quite done yet as they have finished work on the video for one of the best tracks from the record called Architect Of Your Demise. Our friends over at MetalInjection.net have been premiering this video exclusively and you can now watch it below! The video was directed by Scott Fulton and Eyesmash Productions. Check it out and enjoy Malefice's brand of quality, honest British metal!
