Read More: 2016 Berlin International Film Festival Adds to Panorama Section With Ira Sachs' 'Little Men' and More South African director Oliver Schimtz is bringing his first English-language feature, "Shepherds and Butchers," to the Berlin International Film Festival, and Indiewire has the exclusive trailer for the drama above. The film stars Steve Coogan and Garion Dowds and comes from producers Anant Singh ("Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom") and Brian Cox (“Kite"). Inspired by true events, the story is set into motion after Leon, a white 19-year-old prison guard, kills seven black prisoners. Lawyer John Weber (Steve Coogan) takes on his case and uncovers how twisted and backwards the South African legal system is. "It’s a film about young people taken by a society, taught how to kill and then left to their own devices," explains Schmitz in an official statement. "It’s very much about apartheid, but equally it could be.

Covering Fantasia for the first time was a hectic, enjoyable experience. They give you a badge with your name on it and everything. However, as for this year’s lineup, I have a little trouble being enthusiastic. With some major exceptions like Guardians of Galaxy, not listed here only because it’s appearance at the Festival seemed more coincidental than prestigious, a lot of the hyped up releases played weakly. Also, I’ve been no stranger to openly criticizing Fantasia audiences as a whole, more than willing to behave as sheep (or, in this case, cats) and applaud even the weakest of films due to a genre-note or laugh –however unintentional. So I found respite in some of the quieter films, and maybe a few major ones. No matter; Here are five things that truly deserve to gain wider audiences.

Kite
Written by Brian Cox (no, not that one)
Directed by Ralph Ziman
USA/Mexico, 2014
Kite is hyperbolic in every sense imaginable. It’s hyper-stylized without reason, hyper-violent, and incredibly stupid. It’s also under-developed, though it masquerades having depth.
Sawa (India Eisley) is a teenage girl living in an unspecified post-apocalyptic city. Through opening text we’re told that the origins of the breakdown of society stem from a severe financial crisis, leaving the Numbers gang to roam the streets and profit on their sex trafficking of young girls. Sawa is driven by vengeance, as the leader of the Numbers, The Eram (played by the only actor who seems to be having fun in this film), murdered her parents. With help from her father’s ex-partner (Samuel L. Jackson playing… Samuel L. Jackson), she wreaks havoc on The Eram’s trade, killing low-level clientele and working scum. The gang...

Until recently, writer-director Nick Murphy’s credits mostly included a few episodes of the odd TV series or documentary. He’s now starting to make a big name for himself with his first feature film, The Awakening, starring Rebecca Hall and Dominic West, due out in November.
Murphy is now set to go behind the camera again for another feature, Blood, which is to be an adaptation of the Bill Gallagher’s TV series, Conviction, which Gallagher will himself adapt, ScreenDaily report.
The project is already taking shape nicely, with three fantastic lead actors attached in the form of Paul Bettany (Priest), Brian Cox (X-Men 2), and Stephen Graham (Snatch), the last of which Murphy has already worked with on the 2009 TV series, Occupation.
Neal Street Productions, whose credits include Jarhead, Starter For 10, The Kite Runner, and Revolutionary Road, has already secured funding from BBC Films and the BFI, which is terrific news,...

Shark Night 3D just opened in theaters today but that didn’t stop director David R. Ellis from boarding his next horror project, a remake of the Japanese animated feature Kite. Cannes -- James Wong, director and creator of "Final Destination," is set to write and direct a remake of Yasuo Inoue's "The Neighbor Number 13" for Distant Horizon, the production and finance giant headed by Anant Singh.
The original Japanese film, "Rinjin 13-go," tells the story of a young boy who witnesses an extreme case of schoolyard bullying. The psychological effects are so disturbingly profound that 10 years later, as a young man, he is still obsessed with righting the wrong -- even if doing so takes him onto questionable moral ground.
Distant Horizon snapped up the remake rights from Japanese studio, Nikkatsu. Singh and Brian Cox will produce for Distant Horizon with Richard Guardian of sales and financier Lightning Entertainment aboard as executive producer.
"Our hope is that 'The Neighbor Number 13' will be a commercial success like 'Final Destination' was and also generate the same kind of franchise...
