Alan Moore is a comic writer responsible for countless classics, but what most people remember him for is his work at DC Comics: "Watchmen," "Batman: The Killing Joke," etc. Moore himself, though, has disowned these works, since they're owned by the company that screwed him over on creators' rights, and he maintains disinterest in discussing them or adaptations.
I'll say this since I'm one of them — comic fans can be quite thin-skinned. So, they've turned Moore and his current dislike of superhero media into evidence that he's just a grouchy and bitter old man. As a counter-argument, I'll present a Twitter thread from his daughter Leah Moore (herself a comic creator), one written in defense of her "internet-averse" father.
Mrs. Moore documents how her father fell out of love with superhero comics, the passion of his youth, as he got a firsthand look at the dirty machinery of the industry.

A new Hellboy is on the way courtesy of one of the mad minds behind the Crank series. Brian Taylor, one-half of the Taylor/Neveldine directing partners, is helming the new adaptation Hellboy: The Crooked Man. This will be the third feature film incarnation of the Dark Horse comic after Guillermo Del Toro‘s two films, with Ron Perlman in the role, and the 2019 reboot with David Harbour. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has recently confirmed on his Instagram account that the principle photography on Hellboy: The Crooked Man has wrapped.
Mignola’s post consists of an image from the comic and he writes,
“So they’ve wrapped principal photography on the new Hellboy movie.
I wasn’t on set for this one but they have been nice enough to send me dailies and I have to say I have loved what I’ve been seeing. If fans have been waiting...

Millennium Media‘s Hellboy reboot, The Crooked Man, is ready to open the gates of hell to Jack Kesy. Kesy will play Hellboy, the pancake-eatin’, kitty-pettin’ demon who fights supernatural creatures and overlords with a shit-eating grin across his red lips. Crank director Brian Taylor directs the Hellboy reboot from a script written by Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola and Chris Golden.
The plot for Hellboy: The Crooked Man finds Big Red forsaken in 1950s rural Appalachia with a Bprd agent who’s new to the art of banishing baddies alongside a team of supernaturally-charged hunters. While in Appalachia, the duo discovers a remote community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.
“Jack Kesy is a dynamic actor who has the ability to morph into his roles. His talent and stature are perfect for this younger Hellboy.

Life's been hard on Big Red, so far as his live-action outings are concerned. Both "Hellboy" (2004) and its sequel, 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," are evidence that auteur-driven superhero movies are the best kind there is. Sadly, however, neither of Guillermo del Toro's playfully grotesque supernatural action adventures was a runaway box office hit. On top of that, "The Golden Army" had the misfortune of opening in theaters two months after "Iron Man" and a mere week before "The Dark Knight." Sandwiched between those two game-changing comic book films, it's no wonder del Toro's off-beat creature feature got left in the dust, killing his plans for an apocalyptic finale to the trilogy in the process.
After the Neil Marshall-helmed "Hellboy" reboot fell flat on its face in 2019, it was only natural to assume Hellboy would be spending the foreseeable future in franchise prison. Surprisingly, though, that's not the case.

After the failure of the last Hellboy reboot, Millennium Media is giving the fan-favourite comic-book character another shot. It was announced just days ago that Brian Taylor had signed on to direct Hellboy: The Crooked Man, a new reboot which will be scripted by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola in collaboration with Christopher Golden. While speaking with Collider, Taylor spilled a few details about Hellboy: The Crooked Man, including that it will be an R-rated folk horror movie.

“So first of all, I love the character of Hellboy and my favorite run of the character is this particular era,” Brian Taylor said. “The Gdt movies were massive scale space operas and just pure Del Toro through and through. But some of the comics Mike (Mignola) was doing at the time had a very different feeling. More lean and mean, creepy folk horror.

Unsuspecting comic book readers raised on the EC-inspired black and white horror magazines from Warren Publishing had no idea what to make of Heavy Metal when it debuted on American newsstands in 1977. We came to understand it was a domestic version of France’s wildly successful Metal Hurlant, and introduced us to European talents and storytelling. It was mind-blowing.
The magazine’s success led to an animated feature, released in the summer of 1981, heralded by the beautiful Chris Achilléos promotional poster image generic levitra , introducing us to Taarna, who has become the magazine’s unofficial mascot and most recognizable figure.
The film, like the magazine, was a series of animated shorts, an anthology of science fiction, and fantasy, with heavy dollops of violence, nudity, and heavy metal music. And like the magazine, it was beautiful to look at and occasionally made sense.
It opened to mixed reviews and modest success,...

Legendary comic book artist Neal Adams, whose career spanned nearly 60 years and included revitalizing Batman and the Joker for DC as well as decades of work for artists’ rights and a commitment to social relevance in his work, died early in the morning yesterday, according to his daughter-in-law Saori Adams. He was 80.
In 1969, Adams and writer Dennis O’Neil pulled Batman back from the campy persona he had been saddled with on TV through a series of dark comics appropriate to the times. During the period, the duo also re-grounded The Joker in his homicidal roots, revived Two-Face and created Ra’s al Ghul. That character trio would, of course, become essential to Christopher Nolan’s multi-billion-dollar film trilogy for Warner Bros. decades later.
Adams and O’Neil also revamped Green Lantern and Green Arrow for DC, adding modern-day relevance to their stories with commentary on racism, overpopulation, pollution and drug addiction.

The Dark Planet is a VHS oddity from 1989 by comic book artist and animator Richard Corben (Heavy Metal). In the dreamlike DIY film, an ape-like alien soldier roams a hostile world where he shoots claymation monsters and infiltrates a creepy tower where weird priests hold blood-sacrifices. Somehow, a skull-like artifact gets teleported to earth, where a hit man finds it and has to duke it out with an alien ninja.

At the end of last week we received the news that another highly influential artist pulled up a seat at the great drawing desk in the sky. On the 2nd December Richard Corben passed away at the age of 80. Another talent gone too soon. I had to take a bit of time to put this one together as the bulk of his career is out of my wheelhouse. Upon doing my research I found a large quantity of work for the big two, so I thought by talking about this portion of his career with be a gateway for the readers to discover his larger body of work. Being a big fan of the Cartoonist Kayfabe Youtube channel, not a week geos by when Ed Piskor and Jim Rugg don’t talk about Corben’s art. I don’t think I would be able to write this one without their education.

In the mid to late '60s, Warren Publishing added a significant strand to the presentation of comics via the publication of titles such as Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella, which duplicated the general approach of the EC-style horror and science fiction comic anthologies of the '50s, but with a magazine format aimed at adults that cleverly skirted the comics code and thus allowed for unprecedented creative freedom within the field of American comics. By the early '70s, in parallel to the evolution of the Hollywood New Wave Movement Warren's approach had grown similarly multilayered and internationally inspired, showcasing comics and painted pieces by American auteur pulp masters like Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams, Alex Toth and Richard Corben alongside work by emerging auteur European artists like Esteban Maroto, Jose Gonzalez and Jose Ortiz.

Exclusive: The 300th issue of Heavy Metal magazine will be published this summer the same week that Comic-Con international returns to San Diego but, after four decades, is the future of the illustrated sci-fi publication as bright and vivid as its past?
No one hopes so more than Matthew Medney, the just-appointed new CEO of Heavy Metal. He takes the reins to a magazine that launched in April 1977, the month before George Lucas’ Star Wars ushered in Hollywood’s era of fantasy and sci-fi blockbusters. Heavy Metal began life as National Lampoon’s licensed English translation of France’s Métal Hurlant and, unlike Star Wars, aimed for adult audiences with sexually provocative art and the trippy concepts of contributors such as Mœbius, Enki Bilal, Philippe Druillet, Richard Corben, Berni Wrightson, and Jim Steranko.

The characters—both the good and the evil ones—that lurk within the "Mignolaverse" are an eclectic and restless bunch, and sometimes their personalties and persistence require more stories to be told. So the big Hellboy story is over — it’s been over longer than most people think, as I argued when I wrote about the second volume of Hellboy in Hell. But Hellboy is still a valuable piece of intellectual property, with a potential movie reboot still kicking around in the background somewhere. So there has to be some Hellboy product coming out on a regular basis, to help keep the lights on at Dark Horse and to keep Mike Mignola busy.
Well, maybe that’s too cynical a view of things. Hellboy is an interesting, fun character, and his history contains vast swaths of space and time to throw additional stories into. It’s not impossible that Mignola and his collaborators are really, really enthusiastic about all of those possibilities and that Mignola is taking on such a large number of collaborators and doing a whole lot of unrelated one-off...

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of his online horror anthology Split Lip, Sam Costello has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a hardcover collection featuring 13 of the best and creepiest Split Lip stories. We also have images and details on Funko’s third wave of Sdcc 2016 exclusives—including a Doctor Strange Pop! vinyl figure—as well as preview pages from Dark Horse’s trade paperback release of the comic book series Living with the Dead.
Split Lip Kickstarter: From Kickstarter: “Split Lip is an anthology of self-contained horror comics written by Sam Costello and drawn by artists from all over the world. It is often compared to The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery. Influences include writers like Shirley Jackson and Clive Barker, comics creators like Junji Ito and Emily Carroll, ghost stories, folk tales and murder ballads.
Calling Split Lip horror is easiest, but it’s more accurate to call it weird fiction.

Rat God #1
Story and Art by Richard Corben
Colors by Richard Corben and Beth Corben Reed
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Master of comics Richard Corben channels H.P. Lovecraft’s knack for horror and combines it with elements from Native American legends in Rat God #1, creating an unnerving tale that has readers gripping pages with all their might.
There is a lot going on in the first issue of Rat God that is meant to throw readers for a loop as they are initially introduced to the terrifying plight of Kito and her brother Achak, who run for their lives from dark entities lurking in the woods. Corben want readers to feel as though they have a handle on the situation.
Mag the Hag, takes time out of his narrative duties to intervene with the characters, allowing Kito a chance to escape death. A scene which is immediately followed by...

Rat God #1
Writer: Richard Corben
Artist: Richard Corben
Colorist: Richard Corben
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $4
We’ve reviewed almost all of horror comics legend Richard Corben’s latest material and it has been received fantastically and not just because Richard Corben. His adaptations of classic Edgar Allan Poe stories struck precisely the right balance between adaptation and improvisation, lending the stories his own delicious brand of black humor but preserving their eerie strangeness. It also goes without saying that his artwork was like poisoned candy, delicious and horrible at the same time. His return sees him taking inspiration from Poe’s successor, Hp Lovecraft, and while this is not the first time Corben has illustrated the work of Cthulhu’s creator, Rat God appears to be more a riff than a straight adaptation.
The first twist of Rat God is that, in true Lovecraftian fashion, it’s a narrative in flux,...

I’ve turned over a new leaf. You see, I passed up an opportunity this week. I could’ve reviewed the much anticipated Grendel Vs The Shadow crossover and passed up on either Alice Cooper or the new Silent Hill comic, even though they actually fit better the horror movie format of Destroy The Brain. But I didn’t! So instead you get three reviews of three horror comics, and I’m going to try to stick more to horror comics from here on out, when I can.
Full disclosure; the Grendel Vs The Shadow comic is $6! Honestly, this pretty well scared me away from doing it even more. Sure, I probably could’ve just reviewed that and skipped Alice Cooper and Silent Hill, but that would’ve been even more of a betrayal of Destroy The Brain.
You can trust me to be honest about these things. Really, you can.

I’m very excited about the recent growth of comic book creators in the Midwest and in the Saint Louis region in particular. Creators Jim Mahfood, Cullen Bunn and Matt Kindt have established themselves in the industry and have gained quite a following but still show up at local events every year and their diversity will hopefully show that anyone can make comics. And hopefully, next year, we’ll have two comic book conventions where aspiring creators can talk to and learn from both national and local creators. Personally, I think it’s a great time to be into comics, especially with the world of digital distribution making it easier to get your work out there independently.

Heavy Metal (1981)
Director: Gerald Potterton
Writers: Daniel Goldberg, Len Blum, Dan O’Bannon, Richard Corben, Bernie Wrightson, Angus McKie, Jean Giraud
Voice talents: John Candy, Eugene Levy, Richard Romanus, Al Waxman, John Vernon
Soundtrack artists: Sammy Hagar, Journey, Riggs, Devo, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Don Felder, Donald Fagen, Nazareth, Grand Funk Railroad, Black Sabbath, Trust, Stevie Nicks
If you were a kid in a record store in the early 1980’s, you saw this poster. Our record store was poorly lit with carpet crawling up the walls where you could thumb through albums with provocative covers while your parents ran their errands. Ahh, innocence lost. I couldn’t recall an animated film like this before or since, but the most significant thing that I can remember about “Heavy Metal” is that it taught me that animation can have adult and horrific elements. This movie scared me a little.

New comic book Wednesday has come and gone. The dust at your local comic shop has settled. An eerie silence descends as you finish reading your last superhero book of the week. Now it's time for something a little more sinister. Welcome to Bagged and Boarded: comic reviews of the sick, spooky, twisted and terrifying!
Monster and Madman No. 2
The wonderful monster mash-up from Steve Niles continues with issue two (of three). In the last issue, Frankenstein's Monster was found roaming the great frozen wastes immediately following the events of 'Frankenstein'. Now, he's met up with a very helpful doctor in London who goes by the nickname Jack. Seems suspicious, don't you think?
Bag it or board it up? There are so many ways that this comic could end up seeming corny. Oh, Frankenstein's Monster really bumps into Jack the Ripper? Yeah right! But it all works. Maybe it's the hypnotic artwork.

In comics news this week, Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin & Hobbes, won the prestigious Angoulême Grand Prix (a kind of lifetime achievement award) at the biggest comic convention in the world, the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The famously reclusive comics creator was not in attendance but the award is the second time an American has won, the last being Art Spiegelman, the creator of Maus, who won 2 years ago. Calvin & Hobbes ended in 1996 but Watterson’s anti-commercial artistic integrity and the quality of his work has won him many admirers and the strip continues to be popular to this day.

Heavy Metal Magazine has been purchased with plans to bring its properties to film and television.
Publisher Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles) has sold the comics anthology to digital and music veteran David Boxenbaum and film producer Jeff Krelitz, reports Variety.

The best comics develop and grow as the story progresses. This year was flush with fun, exciting new horror comics. And while many series came and went, a few choice "comic runs" went above and beyond this year. Whether it's thrilling plot lines, in depth character develop, or just bad-ass monsters and action… these are our favorites of the year.

The Raven and the Red Death
The last time I reviewed a Richard Corben adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe it was the two-part Fall of the House of Usher. This time the comic luminary tackles "The Raven" and "The Masque of the Red Death." The two tales, told in lush detail, play out to their frightful conclusions in this wonderful one-shot.

Well, another Halloween has come and gone, and somehow I’ve survived the night. Huddled within my makeshift fortress, I no longer sense their presence. Their shrill little laughs, the probing bursts of their flashlights, all has gone quiet. But when I close my eyes, I can still see the tiny monsters dressed up like -oh the Irony- imaginary monsters. But the truth, I see the Truth: Real monsters wearing Human costumes! How innocent they act, pretending as though they’ve come for little nuggets of condensed sugar but I Know! But they don’t know that I know, so they keep pretending so they don’t blow their cover and eventually, after an endless twilight of torment at my doorstep, they abandon their efforts. Now, in the silent chill morning of November 1st, I clutch my precious signed and sketched-in copy of Everybody Loves Tank Girl to my chest...

The new Richard Corben comic from Dark Horse, The Raven and the Red Death, contains two brand new adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe poetry. With “The Raven,” Corben gets to revisit the Poe classic. Back in December 1974, Corben (along with writer Rich Margopoulos) originally adapted The Raven in a faithful, if reworked here to make it an eight page comic, story. Appearing in Creepy #67 (and reprinted in 2012′s Creepy Presents Richard Corben,) Corben gets to illustrate a man opening his door, hoping to find his love Lenore only to have his home invaded by a pesky raven, who thwarts his every desire with the repeated word, “nevermore.” Corben’s painted work is dark, moody and has colors that pierce you down to your soul. He’s constantly bouncing back and forth between forcing you to encounter the chill of the raven’s night and the heat of the narrator’s desire.

Michael K. Matsumoto really got my head spinning with this artwork. Besides the fact that this is a fantastic piece, I realized that it would be entirely possible for Pacific Rim and Godzilla to have a crossover film! With Warner Bros. and Legendary co-financing and producing Pacific Rim, and with Legendary helming Godzilla this could happen. A major wrench in this chain would be the fact that starting in 2014 WB and Legendary are ending their contract and Universal will now partner with Legendary. Depending on how licensing works, I would imagine this would mean Godzilla would fall under the ownership of Universal Films at the time of its release. If, however, Legendary did somehow retain some rights to ownership of the character, the earliest we could see a crossover would be five years from now when Warner could renew their contract.

Lobster Johnson: Scent of a Lotus
Written by John Arcudi and Mike Mignola
Art by Sebastián Fiumara, colors by Dave Stewart. Cover by Tonci Zonjic
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Like a lot of the Lobster Johnson stories, a grouping of essentially self-contained period stories from the Hellboy franchise, this book doesn’t have much going on beneath its surface, a thin membrane Old Hollywood throwbacks. A murder in Chinatown ostensibly kicks off events (slowly and without creating interest), a reporter investigates them while shadowed by a pair of detectives, and every character readily drops everything to make moves toward finding the culprit.
But this story is issue one of two, so the inevitable conclusion is stalled for another issue’s worth in dollars and a fair number of talking heads, heads Sebastián Fiumara is left with the unenviable work of drawing. There’s not much story to tell here,...
