HBO’s sci-fi western “Westworld,” is the heavy favorite to win for contemporary and fantasy production design. The question is whether two nominations for both its western theme park and futuristic programming center actually doubles its chances — or cancels it out. Competition comes from the dystopian minimalism of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the richly Gothic “Penny Dreadful” (nominated last year), and the Vatican beauty of “The Young Pope.”
Meanwhile, the royalty glam of Peter Morgan’s “The Crown” is the heavy favorite to win for period production design, with competition from the Old Hollywood trappings of “Feud: Bette and Joan,” the nightmarish ’80s sci-fi of “Stranger Things,” the alt history of “The Man in the High Castle” (nominated last year), and perennial contender, “Masters of Sex.”

Fiction sometimes seems to contain almost as many recipes as cookery, but which are the most appetising?
James Bond was always fussy about his food – remember that breakfast in Casino Royale with "half a pint of iced orange juice, three scrambled eggs and bacon, and a double portion of coffee without sugar". Now William Boyd has taken 007's foodie fetishism to a new level with a footnoted recipe for salad dressing.
It opens up a whole new perspective on your bookshelves – what if you tried to live off the recipes buried between the covers of your favourite fiction? There's an old joke about Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse (1927) – you might not enjoy the novel, but you can certainly learn how to make the French classic dish boeuf en daube. But this is completely untrue: the dish is made by Mildred (a cook who seems to spend most of her time...

Here's a look back at Back Stage's top 10 memories:10. Undead DAYTIMEBack in 2009—when the daytime-drama format looked to be going the way of the wild polar bear—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists New York local president Holter Graham sounded a mournful note about the format's future. "The writing was on the wall about daytime and that it was a changing market a long time ago," Graham said. "The economic crisis given to us by the Bush administration sped up that process and made that writing on the wall bright yellow highlighter."That highlighter ink didn't wash away in 2010, but it faded a little. In 2009, CBS announced that its long-running soaps "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" would come to an end. This year no such similar announcement came, the networks instead making multiyear commitments to dramas such as "The Young and the Restless" and "Days of Our Lives.

I am previewing 22 film titles this week and a few of them are already in the database and linked where that is the case. One story, however, I am held from posting until today comes from Variety in which Anne Thompson does a little Twilight franchise rumor passing as she gives the following update on the potential directors for the third film in the franchise, Eclipse: Don't believe everything you hear about Twilight and its sequels. Things are heating up already on the third installment, Eclipse. They haven't even started the second one yet, New Moon. When you've got a robust franchise, filmmakers are eager to get on board. Word is,...
