Lil’ Kim and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs are hip-hop moguls who go way back. The two became friendly in the ’90s after Lil’ Kim joined Junior M.A.F.I.A, a hip-hop group started by The Notorious B.I.G. Biggie introduced Lil’ Kim to Combs, and the rest is history. However, Lil’ Kim said she regretted following Combs’ advice regarding Sisqó’s “Thong Song.”
Lil’ Kim missed a feature on Sisqó’s ‘Thong Song’ because of Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs
Sean “P. Diddy” Combs never signed Lil’ Kim to Bad Boy Records despite their close relationship through the years. But he still gave her career advice that helped launch her to success. Unfortunately, not all of his advice was good. She once talked about the missed opportunity for her to be featured on Sisqó’s “Thong Song.”

YouTube is building Shorts into a key feature for the platform’s community of musical artists. In a blog post, YouTube announced Remix, a collection of editing tools that help fans repurpose the biggest moments from their favorite music videos.
By tapping a Remix button that will appear next to YouTube music videos, creators can incorporate elements of those videos in four different ways. The Sound option brings the original audio to the remixed Short; Collab sets up a split-screen response reminiscent of TikTok’s Stitches; Green Screen exports the original video to the background of the Remix; and the Cut tool allows users to clip specific scenes. YouTube’s blog post, attributed to Shorts exec Sarah Ali, specifies that a “five-second clip” is a good size for a Cut.

Google DeepMind is developing AI-driven tools that can make life easier for creators across the globe, but the development of those tools has been wrapped up in controversy. A Billboard report discussed the tense music industry relations that have stemmed from Google’s decision to train its AI on major-label recordings before receiving permission from rights holders.
Last November, YouTube announced Dream Track, its first publicly-available AI feature related to music. Dream Track uses Google DeepMind’s Lyria to pair creators’ video ideas with original soundtracks that use AI-generated replicas of pop star voices. Musicians who participated in the Dream Track test included Demi Lovato, Troye Sivan, and T-Pain.
“One of YouTube’s greatest strengths is our strong relationships with music industry partners,” reads a YouTube blog post published at the time. “We’re committed to collaborating with them as we enter this new era, critically exploring together new opportunities...

YouTube‘s partnerships side is undergoing its first corporate restructuring in a decade–one that’ll see changes to the creator management and operations teams, and will result in around 100 people’s roles being eliminated.
This reorg is following a strategy laid out by Mary Ellen Coe, who took over as YouTube’s chief business officer when Robert Kyncl left in early 2023. Coe previously led Google Customer Solutions, where she oversaw global ads for midmarket and small businesses, and before that spent 12 years with management consulting firm McKinsey & Co.
With the restructure, YouTube will bring its content creator management teams together under dedicated central leadership in each individual country.
People familiar with the matter tell Tubefilter that this change will not result in any creators losing partner manager support, and that in general YouTube will be able to support more creators, since the focus is now on scaling these core,...

YouTube is amping up its efforts in generative artificial intelligence, adding a “Dream Screen” and other AI tools for creators.
The Dream Screen offers a searchable well of AI solutions designed for YouTube’s burgeoning Shorts platform. At the tech company’s annual Made on YouTube event in New York, a live demonstration showed it coming up with mashups like a dragon flying over a photograph of the city or a dog appearing to drive a car, all fantastical short videos derived from entering terms into a custom search engine.
In a Q&a session after the event, executives downplayed the risks of unleashing the technology on a massive population of creators and users. AI more broadly and applications like ChatGPT have prompted concerns about everything from copyright violations to deepfakes. The technology has been a central issue in the ongoing negotiations between studios and streamers and striking members of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

YouTube is a top distribution platform for creators, but the Google-owned hub wants to integrate itself into the production pipeline, too. At its Made On YouTube event, CEO Neal Mohan announced multiple AI-driven tools that are designed to provide inspiration and streamline the video creation process.
The new tools will enhance the creator experience on YouTube Shorts. Three years after unveiling its TikTok competitor, YouTube is helping its short-form community concoct videos that are out of this world. The platform’s Dream Screen will bring “fantastic settings” to Shorts by harnessing the power of generative AI. Users will input setting ideas into the Dream Screen and receive AI-generated backgrounds in response.
During the Made On event, Mohan claimed that YouTube’s push into AI will open up new opportunities for aspiring creators. “Many people today believe that becoming a YouTuber is out of their reach,” Mohan said. “At YouTube,...

San Francisco, Nov 10 (Ians) YouTube has surpassed 80 million Music and Premium subscribers globally, including the trial users.
It is 30 million subscribers more from the 50 million the video streaming platform announced last year.
“YouTube’s twin engine of revenue — subscriptions and ads — is the real deal,” said Lyor Cohen, global head of Music, YouTube.
According to Cohen, there were many reasons behind this increase in subscribers.
The company has levelled up ‘YouTube Premium’ with features like afterparties, which give users unique access to livestream content and access to discounts on the newest Google hardware and services.
‘Premium’ allows fans to immerse themselves in what they love and helps them explore it in depth.
The Music app has over 100 million official songs, “plus an expansive catalogue of live performances, remixes, and diamond in the rough deep-cuts”.

In just over a year, YouTube Premium and YouTube Music have gained a collective 30 million paying subscribers.
That means more than 80 million people are now forking over money for one or both of YouTube’s subscriptions: YouTube Music, its answer to platforms like Spotify and Apple Music; and YouTube Premium, which used to be the only way to watch its original productions, but now is mostly a “make the ads go away” service.
Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of music, attributes the growth spurt to new (or new-ish) YouTube Premium perks like its “exclusive access” to some livestreams via “Afterparties,” as well as YouTube Music’s library size (100 million songs) and mix of non-song content.
He also credited YouTube’s establishment of “meaningful global partnerships” with companies and entities like Samsung, Vodafone, and SoftBank.
“These partners were critical in helping us reach this 80 million subscriber milestone and will continue...

After Robert Kyncl officially steps down as YouTube’s Chief Business Officer, he will dive right back into the entertainment business with a glamorous new title. Kyncl, who spent 12 years at YouTube and seven years at Netflix before that, will take over as the CEO of Warner Music Group, replacing outgoing chief Stephen Cooper.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced in August that Kyncl would abdicate his Cbo title in 2023 in order to “start the next chapter in his career.” At the time, neither Wojcicki nor Kyncl indicated where the Czech-born businessman would head next, but it didn’t take long before major businesses began bidding for his services. On September 18 — three weeks after Kyncl’s career move was announced — Bloomberg indicated that Warner Music was courting the longtime YouTube operative.

For years, YouTube has had a pain point in serving its thousands of content creators: Licensing music in videos is a headache.
For the largest video-sharing platform on Earth — particularly as it’s fending off competition from TikTok and Instagram for the loyalty of a creator economy that heavily uses music for content — that’s a problem.
But now YouTube is looking to change that. At its Made on YouTube event in Los Angeles on Tuesday — which also unveiled new revenue models for content creators on YouTube’s Shorts platform...

Can you hear the Creator Music? It’s right around the corner.
During its Made On YouTube presentation, Google’s video platform introduced its newest form of monetization: Shorts ads. That wasn’t the only product YouTube revealed during its event. It also announced an audio licensing and revenue-sharing service called Creator Music, which will simplify the agreements between creators and artists while generating new revenue for both parties.
Creator Music is currently in beta in the U.S. It is expected to expand to more countries in 2023.
YouTube is doing this for the (TikTok) culture.
Though the decision to run ads on YouTube Shorts is a boon for creators, it adds another wrinkle to YouTube’s complicated relationship with the recording industry. A new revenue stream requires renewed dealings with major artists and labels, and those negotiations are of the utmost importance.

YouTube said it has paid more than 6 billion to the music industry between July 2021 and June 2022, representing a 2 billion increase from the 4 billion in payments the company announced last year.
User-generated content accounted for 30 percent of the payouts to artists, songwriters and rights holders, the company said.

YouTube Music has racked up 50 million subscribers since its launch roughly three years ago.
This counts YouTube Music subscribers, YouTube Premium subscribers (who receive music in addition to other perks), and customers who are still on a trial for either subscription, Bloomberg reports. YouTube Music is priced at $10 per month, while YouTube Premium is priced at $12 per month.
YouTube last reported in October 30 million paying Music and Premium subscribers. By comparison, industry leader Spotify currently counts 165 million subscribers, while competitor Apple Music last announced 60 million subscribers -- though that was back in June 2019.
“The twin engine growth story is real,” Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of music, told Bloomberg -- referring to the company’s dual streams of revenue from both both advertising and paid subscriptions. “There are people who are prepared to pay with their eyeballs and those willing to subscribe. They are both super important.”

YouTube says that over the past 12 months, it has paid out $4 billion to the global music industry, including revenues derived by ads and subscriptions for artists, songwriters, and rights holders.
Furthermore, 30% of that sum -- or $1.2 billion -- was derived from user-generated content, YouTube says -- such as native creators making cover videos of their favorite songs. In these cases, both publishers and creators are eligible to share ensuing ad revenues.
In a blog post, YouTube’s global music head, Lyor Cohen, touted that YouTube Music also added more paying members in the first quarter of 2021 than in any quarter since its launch. YouTube Music operates both paid and ad-supported tiers, with 2 billion users watching music videos monthly, per Cohen.

YouTube delivered its ninth annual NewFronts presentation to digital ad buyers, in a shorter, online format it dubbed “Brandcast Delivered.”

As the music world today is reeling from the news of Andre Harrell’s death at the age of 59, his colleagues and friends are celebrating the career of the Uptown Records founder. Harrell’s milestone career and personal story also are the subject of Uptown, a three-part original scripted miniseries, which was greenlighted by BET Networks in early December 2019.
