Paris Fashion Week got a dose of Zendaya on Monday.
The actress turned up to the star-studded runway presentation for Louis Vuitton in the City of Lights wearing a daring white dress with double zippers. The plunging gown featured a top zipper that was pulled down to her midriff, while the bottom accent was zipped open to her mid thigh. She paired the look with stilettos to match, minimal Bulgari jewelry (including mini hoop earrings, gold bangles and a ring) and her hair parted down the middle. She attended the womenswear spring/summer 2024 show with an entourage that included longtime stylist and close friend Law Roach.

"The Batman" was a bonafide hit in 2021, introducing a whole new take on the Dark Knight that resembled a David Fincher-esque crime drama. The film was director Matt Reeves' gritty, noir-inspired take on the DC Comics superhero, and it mostly worked, even if its inspirations were often a little too overt. After all, "The Batman" was basically "Se7en" with capes. But there were some undeniably cool elements in movie. Case in point: the Batmobile.
Partly inspired by Stephen King's "Christine" and sporting a distinctly rugged look, the Batmobile of "The Batman" was the most beastly yet. Much like the Batsuit in the film, this muscle car Batmobile looked as though Bruce Wayne could have built it in his underground bunker by welding various parts together and fabricating his own hellish creation. As VFX Supervisor Anders Langlands told /Film:

It's been more than a year since Robert Pattinson's emo Caped Crusader arrived in "The Batman." Director Matt Reeves' noirish take on the Dark Knight might not have had quite the cultural impact of, say, "The Dark Knight," but it did manage to become a box office hit during a troubling time for the industry. Furthermore, there were certainly memorable moments, such as Pattinson's anti-hero mercilessly beating a helpless thug into oblivion before delivering uttering, "I'm vengeance." We also have Colin Farrell's Penguin telling Batman, "Take it easy, sweetheart!" and being fluent in Spanish.
John Turturro's Carmine Falcone, however, was not quite so meme-worthy. However, some here at /Film have argued that Turturro's crime lord is the secret weapon of "The Batman," and he certainly has an integral part in the narrative. As the movie plays out, we learn the shocking truth: that the crime boss who...

In "The Batman," filmmaker Matt Reeves introduced a whole new take on the Batmobile after the iconic car had been through multiple on-screen iterations. Prior to Reeves' 2022 film, Christopher Nolan introduced us all to a Batmobile envisioned as a former military vehicle that one bewildered Gotham cop famously referred to as a "tank." A similarly bulky design found its way into the Zack Snyder movies. Reeves, however, decided to pare things down for his effort, and introduced a version of the Batmobile that had, like its hero's suit, been cobbled together from various parts to make a Frankenstein-like muscle car from your nightmares.
Reeves has spoken about wanting the Batmobile in "The Batman" to look like something out of a David Lynch movie, and said in an interview for James Field's book, "The Art of The Batman," that the point of the car was, "to intimidate, to create terror.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.
As had largely been expected, Richard E. Grant was a delightfully upbeat and uncontroversial host, with no political jokes or any jibes aimed at the guests (although he did reference Will Smith,...

Taking a big-budget Hollywood movie to shoot on location is more than just popping over to a pretty spot someone remembers visiting once. In fact, one aspect of finding the right locations for “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson, involved the ubiquitous search engine Google.
“Matt [Reeves, the director] and I started a global search looking at various cities, mostly on Google Earth,” says production designer James Chinlund. “We found this amazing location called Wellington Square in Liverpool and that really opened a whole door for me to the north of England.” Eventually, that led the team to Manchester as well Glasgow, Scotland.
The historic cities provided the right blend of Gothic architecture and patina for the look Reeves and Chinlund had in mind. With so many prior iterations of Gotham City already preserved in television, film and comic books, Chinlund explains the challenge was creating a new space within the world.

Many were pleased to learn of Greig Fraser’s (“The Batman”) inclusion among the American Society of Cinematographers’ five nominees for the 37th annual ASC Awards. The reigning Oscar and ASC champ for “Dune” is the fourth Dp nominated by the guild for lensing Gotham City. Stephen Goldblatt (1995’s “Batman Forever), Wally Pfister (2005’s “Batman Begins” and 2008’s “The Dark Knight”) and Lawrence Sher (2019’s “Joker”) also received bids for their work on the most awarded comic book franchise in history. Perhaps what has always distinguished the DC property for voters are the undertones of classic noir that this iteration in particular emphasizes.

While Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” takes some clear influences from Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed “Dark Knight” trilogy, one way that his take on a rookie Batman departs from that of Nolan or any other film incarnation of the superhero is his “DIY” aesthetic, as production designer James Chinlund described it.
Nolan’s Batman — played by Christian Bale — had the help of Lucius Fox and Wayne Enterprises to design his state-of-the-art tech to fight Bane, Scarecrow and the Joker, highlighted by an intimidating Batmobile that Wayne Enterprises had built as a prototype for the military.
But when designing the Batmobile that would be driven by Robert Pattinson in “The Batman,” Chinlund told TechRadar that his team and Reeves agreed from the beginning that they should take the polar opposite approach.

But when designing the Batmobile that would be driven by Robert Pattinson in “The Batman,” Chinlund told TechRadar that his team and Reeves agreed from the beginning that they should take the polar opposite approach.

“The Batman” is one of the most gorgeous movies of the year, full of richly imagined environments and beautiful sets, which makes the home video release of the movie even more essential. Now you can properly luxuriate in filmmaker Matt Reeves’ unique, perpetually rain-soaked vision of Gotham City and search for all the hidden clues and details.
If for some reason you haven’t seen “The Batman,” it follows a new Dark Knight in his second year of operation as he goes up against the Riddler (Paul Dano), as he cuts a bloody swath through Gotham City’s underworld, targeting politicians and criminals alike. Bruce Wayne/Batman also teams up with Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz) to help solve this maddening and murderous mystery. The Gotham City that this Batman inhabits is both eerie and familiar; an identifiable American metropolis adorned and embellished by fantastical elements. It’s a stunner.

Having already explored the vast photoreal toolsets of Ilm for “Cloverfield” and Weta Digital for the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, director Matt Reeves eagerly implemented their latest advancements for his vision of “The Batman” as a grungy, neo-noir detective thriller. He principally utilized Ilm’s fledgling StageCraft LED-wall volume system (developed for “The Mandalorian”) to add unfinished skylines and Weta’s own virtual production prowess to complete the rainy Batmobile freeway chase with Penguin (Colin Farrell).
The key was seamlessly integrating the VFX around production designer James Chinlund’s reimagined Gotham as a Gothic nightmare and cinematographer Greig Fraser’s ’70s inspired dark lighting (“The French Connection” meets “All the President’s Men”).
“Matt wanted the Gotham cityscapes to be unique and special but still feel real,” said production VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon (the “Apes” trilogy), who works at Weta. “He wanted the forms, architecture, and the fabric of the...

Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” is finally out in theaters, and reviews have been pretty great. A lot of credit for that must go to the creative artisans who helped Reeves attain his vision for the Dark Knight. To say that the crafts of Reeves’s collaborators are fully on display in this movie would be an understatement, especially when you consider that multiple craftspeople involved with the movie are currently up for Oscars later this month.
“The Batman” was one of the many productions that famously got shut down due to Covid after it began filming in January 2020. It had to turn off cameras for six months until pandemic protocols were in place, but you’re not likely to be able to tell from watching it.

When cinematographer Greig Fraser reunited with “Let Me In” director Matt Reeves for “The Batman,” he quickly realized that Reeves’ take on the dark knight would share something in common with their earlier collaboration.
“He wanted to make sure that we were extremely focused on our main character,” Fraser told IndieWire in a recent interview. “Everything had to be driven by Bruce Wayne’s point of view, and that’s how we had approached ‘Let Me In,’ too. It was very much through the eyes of that particular child.”
Reeves had wanted to work with Fraser again ever since they made “Let Me In” over 10 years ago, but their schedules never lined up until now. “He’s a brilliant cinematographer and my experience with him on that movie was so special,” Reeves said. “I have a very emotional response to light and Greig is the same way.”

Matt Reeves and production designer James Chinlund have worked together before “The Batman.” The pair’s collaboration has been focused on creating grounded worlds, based in reality. That approach was no different for building the world of the new DC adaptation.
Reeves wanted fans to feel like they were in a complete world in which a viewer could feel like they could get on a bus and go to Gotham. “We wanted this idea that it was somewhere around us,” says Chinlund.
With that, Chinlund, onboard from the get-go, was in constant communication about constructing this gritty, crime-ridden city of Gotham and bringing it to life.
The Batmobile
Despite its many incarnations, the Batmobile’s sleek ride remains iconic. That led to one of the key decisions by Chinland when approaching this project. Through many conversations with Reeves, the pair knew they wanted it to be a car.

In keeping with director Matt Reeves’ neo noir, grunge-like vision for “The Batman” — infusing Robert Pattinson’s sullen Bruce Wayne with a Jekyll and Hyde vibe — production designer James Chinlund reimagined a Gotham environment that was more David Fincher than Christopher Nolan.
“David was a huge inspiration for us, and Matt wanted to create a Pov-driven, noir detective story,” said Chinlund, who previously worked with Reeves on “The Planet of the Apes” franchise. “And, as the designer, the challenge was weaving a world that could contain all these threads and deliver a Gotham that felt simultaneously grounded yet stitched together in a new space that we haven’t seen before.”
Taking inspiration from Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One,” Chinlund worked off a totally corrupt Gotham in stitching together a Batworld culled from London (where they shot on location and did set builds at Leavesden and Cardington studios) and New...

"The Batman" has arrived in theaters and even if you haven't seen the movie yet, you've surely seen the trailers, which have focused a lot on Robert Pattinson's brand new, heavily-revamped Batmobile. Essentially, Matt Reeves opted to give the DC hero a muscle car this time around, and it's impressive. What's perhaps most impressive is that Pattinson actually did unleash the beast and got the car up to around 100 miles per hour.
Production designer James Chinlund recently spoke with Insider about his work in the film, which involved crafting a version of the Batmobile that felt like Bruce Wayne built it...

Even though it weighs in at nearly three-hours in length, the skill with which director Matt Reeves and his crew construct the tale of The Batman allows it to move along swiftly and satisfyingly toward an epic third act that does not disappoint in the slightest. This, along with a strong performance as the title character from Robert Pattinson allows The Batman to become the new high-water mark for comic book/superhero films moving forward.
In this particular tale, the vigilante known as the Batman has been operating in Gotham City for some time, attempting to bring order to chaos while fighting both the crime and corruption that plagues his city, when a new criminal emerges and begins leaving a series of clues as to his overall endgame. It soon becomes a race against time to thwart the carnage and destruction that Batman’s new adversary has planned as well...

DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes wrapped up with a 30-minute discussion with director Matt Reeves about The Batman, and it did not disappoint. Introduced by Robert Pattinson and moderated by DC FanDome host Aisha Tyler, the fast-talking Reeves covered quite a bit over the course of the panel, including giving fans a pretty clear idea of what sort of story they’re in for when The Batman debuts in October of next year.

As had been discussed before, The Batman is set during Bruce Wayne’s second year as a crimefighter, meaning it’s not an origin, but the Dark Knight is clearly still establishing himself and becoming the hero he’ll eventually become. As Reeves made clear, “He’s far from perfect.” While Batman is no longer a new presence in Gotham City when The Batman starts, he’s not having the affect on the...

Oscar nominees “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” were the big winners Saturday night at the 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards (held at The InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown). Barbara Ling’s elegiac recreation of 1969 Hollywood beat Dennis Gassner’s innovative period work on Sam Mendes’ one-shot, World War I extravaganza “1917” for the period prize, while Lee Ha Jun’s extraordinary production design on Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” took contemporary honors. The wins for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” suggest they are not out of the running for the Production Design Oscar.
Oscar ballots are in voters hands, due Tuesday, February 4.
Meanwhile, “Avengers: Endgame” and “Toy Story 4 ” earned Adg awards for fantasy and animation.
Ling performed a 50-year facelift on Hollywood Blvd. and Westwood Village. The restoration included such bygone cultural fixtures as the Pussycat Theater, the psychedelic Aquarius Theatre (which opened “Hair” in 1968), and Peaches Records & Tapes.

On December 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 24th annual awards, which will be handed out on Feb. 1. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 23 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Little Women,” but its odds might lengthen after being snubbed by the guild.

So much for “The Lion King” avoiding the animation label. Despite Disney’s best efforts to position Jon Favreau’s all-cg, photo-realistic game changer as a “live-action” awards contender, it grabbed Golden Globe and Art Directors Guild nominations on Monday for Best Animated Feature and Animation Film Production Design. And Disney had nothing to do with it.
That’s because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose to switch “The Lion King” from Best Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical (as submitted by Disney) to the animation category, while production designer James Chinlund submitted his own work to the Adg as an animated feature. (Disney encourages its craft artists to self-submit to guilds and professional organizations.)
Likewise, IndieWire has learned that “The Lion King” editors Adam Gerstel and Mark Livolsi submitted their work to the American Cinema Editors for Ace Eddie Awards consideration in animation.
Less surprising, though, was “The Lion King...

Disney led the pack with eight production design nominations for the 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards. These included Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” for fantasy, and animation entries “Frozen II,” “Toy Story 4,” and “The Lion King”.
All of the Oscar contenders were well represented, including Bong Joon Ho’s Lafca Best Picture winner, “Parasite,” and period standouts “1917,” Sam Mendes’ innovative, single-shot, World War I thriller, “Joker,” Todd Phillips’ blockbuster origin story, which channeled gritty ’70s New York as Gotham City; Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which gave a 50-year facelift to Hollywood Blvd.; and Martin Scorsese’s sprawling mob epic, “The Irishman,” which crammed 117 locations for 309 scenes.
Contemporary nominees included Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,” Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” and Jordan Peele’s “Us.” The other...

“The Irishman,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” on Monday all nabbed nominations for the Art Directors Guild Awards’ period-film category, the Adg category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Production Design.
In the Adg fantasy-film category, which typically supplies one or two Oscar nominees, the guild singled out “Ad Astra,” “Aladdin,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Dumbo,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
Both of those categories were expanded from five to six nominees because of ties.

“The Jungle Book” was only the beginning for Jon Favreau. With “The Lion King,” the director has made an industry game-changer: the first keyframe-animated movie shot on a virtual reality set with a live-action aesthetic. Indeed, thanks to its innovative use of Vr for world building and camera layout, and stunning photorealism by Oscar-winning VFX studio Mpc, “The Lion King” essentially removes the divide between live action and animation.
Favreau, though, refuses to classify it, hoping audiences will experience “The Lion King” as though it were live action. In reality, it’s the latest virtual production advancement spearheaded by Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Rob Legato. Meanwhile, Disney continues to market it as a unique hybrid (likely ruling out a Best Animated Feature Oscar campaign in favor of a Visual Effects push).
However, when asked to ponder “The Lion King” as a landmark in naturalistic animation, Favreau partially conceded that it was probably on the right track.

Spike Jonze has still not announced any new feature filmmaking efforts since the release of his Oscar winner “Her” in 2013, so fans will just have to settle for this surprise two-minute short film at the moment. Jonze released his new short, “The New Normal,” earlier this week in partnership with the cannabis company MedMen. The short finds Jonze advocating for marijuana legalization by retelling American history through the progression of cannabis in the country.
Per the synopsis from MedMen: “The commercial chronicles society’s evolving perceptions of the plant, from pre-prohibition to the modern industry of today. While looking back through America’s history, from George Washington’s hemp farm, to Reefer Madness propaganda, ‘The New Normal’ takes the audience on a journey through the injustices of the past and a hopeful view for the future.”
Jonze had some impressive collaborators on the film, including Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young. “Grey...
